Is CDF large $p_T$ anomaly from virtual SUSY threshold effects?

Talk is given at the YITP International Workshop -- `Recent Developments in QCD and Hadron Physics'. Recent CDF data of the inclusive jet cross section shows anomalous deviation around large transverse momentum $p_{T}(j)\approx 200 \sim 350$ GeV. Is it possible to interpret the anomaly in terms of virtual SUSY effects. The answer is `NO', because we find that the virtual SUSY loop interference effects are too small to explain the CDF data.

Associate $J/ψ+ γ$ Production: A Clean Probe of Unpolarized and Polarized Gluon Densities

Color-octet contributions to the associate $J/ψ+γ$ production are found to be negligible, compared to the ordinary color-singlet contribution. Within the color-singlet model the $J/ψ+γ$ production in the leading order is possible only through gluon-gluon fusion process. Therefore, the associate $J/ψ+γ$ production remains to be useful as a clean channel to probe the unpolarized and polarized gluon distribution inside proton (and photon), and to study heavy quarkonia production mechanism. We discuss in detail the associate production of $J/ψ+γ$ at $p \overline{p}$ (or $pp$) and $ep$ colliders. By requiring the $J/ψ$ to decay into an $e^+e^-$ or $μ^+ μ^-$ pair, we end up with an exceptionally clean final state. This process can therefore serve as a very clean probe of the gluon densities inside the proton as well as the photon. Numerical results are presented for the TEVATRON $p \overline{p}$ and HERA $ep$ colliders. This same mechanism can be used to probe the polarized gluon content of the proton in polarized $p + p (\bar p)$ collisions. We study in detail $J/ψ+ γ$ production at both polarized fixed target and polarized collider energies for RHIC.

Average Kinetic Energy of Heavy Quark in Semileptonic B Decay

Within the ACCMM model the average kinetic energy of heavy quark in a heavy-light meson is calculated as $\langle {\bf p}^2 \rangle = {3 \over 2} {p_{_F}}^2$, solely from the fact that the Gaussian momentum probability distribution has been taken in the ACCMM model. Therefore, the Fermi momentum parameter $p_{_F}$ of the ACCMM model is not a truly free parameter, but is closely related to the average kinetic energy of heavy quark, which is theoretically calculable in principle. In this context, we determine $p_{_F}$ by comparing the theoretical prediction of the ACCMM model with the model independent lepton energy spectrum of $B \rightarrow e νX$ from the recent CLEO analysis, and find that $p_{_F}=0.54~\pm~^{0.16}_{0.15}$ GeV. We also calculate $p_{_F}$ in the relativistic quark model by applying the quantum mechanical variational method, and obtained $p_{_F}=0.5\sim 0.6$ GeV. We show the correspondences between the relativistic quark model and the heavy quark effective theory. We then clarify the importance of the value of $p_{_F}$ in the determination of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$.

Form Factors for Exclusive Semileptonic $B$--Decays

We investigate the form factors for exclusive semileptonic decays of $B$-meson to $D,~D^*$, based on the parton picture and helped by the results of the HQET. We obtain the numerical results for the slope of the Isgur-Wise function, which is consistent with the experimental results, and we extracte the dependences of hadronic form factors on $q^2$ by varying input heavy quark fragmentation function without the nearest pole dominance ansätze.

Axial Anomaly and the Nucleon Spin

In this letter, we have taken a particular Lagrangian, which was introduced to resolve U(1) problem, as an effective QCD Lagrangian, and have derived a formula of the quark content of the nucleon spin. The difference between quark content of the proton (ΔΣ_p) and that of the neutron (ΔΣ_n) is evaluated by this formula. Neglecting the higher-order isospin corrections, this formula can reduce to Efremov's results in the large N_c limit.

A Model-independent Way to Measure $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$

We propose a new model-independent method, to determine the ratio $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$, which is theoretically described by the phase space factor and the well-known perturbative QCD correction only. We explore the possible experimental options: the measurement of inclusive hadronic invariant mass distributions. We also discuss the relevant experimental backgrounds.

Form Factors of Semileptonic $M_{l3}$ Decays

We study in detail the kinematics of semileptonic $M_{l3}$ ($M \rightarrow M^\prime l ν$) decay, considering only the new models preserving all the gauge symmetries of the Standard Model (SM), and assuming that neutrinos are massless and left-handed as in the SM. And we present a brief review of the recent theoretical progress on model independent constraints on the form factors of $M_{l3}$ decays using dispersion relations. Finally we review a new parton model approach for semileptonic $B \rightarrow D(D^*) l ν$ decays, by extending the inclusive parton model and by combining with the results of the heavy quark effective theory. We also obtain the slope of the Isgur-Wise function.

Large $p_T$ Hadroproduction of $Z$ as a Probe of Gluon Distribution inside Proton

The transverse momentum distribution of single vector boson production at hadron colliders provides useful ways of testing the Standard Model and searching new physics beyond the Standard Model. We study large $p_{_T}$ hadroproduction of $Z$-boson as a probe of gluon distributions inside proton. We investigate how to get initial gluon-involving contributions, or how to subtract quark-quark (or -antiquark) contributions from total cross section. We also investigated the simultaneous measurement of the rapidity and the transverse momentum of the produced $Z$ boson, to obtain momentum fractions of initial partons. And we extracted relevant uncertainties involving in experimental and theoretical analyses. This large $p_{_T}$ hadroproduction of $Z$ can be used as constraints on analyses of global parton (gluon and quarks) distribution functions inside proton.

Decay Constants and Semileptonic Decays of Heavy Mesons in Relativistic Quark Model

We investigate the $B$ and $D$ mesons in the relativistic quark model by applying the variational method with the Gaussian wave function. We calculate the Fermi momentum parameter $p_{_F}$, and obtain $p_{_F} = 0.50 \sim 0.54$ GeV, which is almost independent of the input parameters, $α_s$, $m_b$, $m_c$ and $m_{sp}$. We then calculate the ratio $f_B$/$f_D$, and obtain the result which is larger, by the factor of about 1.3, than $\sqrt{M_D / M_B}$ given by the naive nonrelativistic analogy. This result is in a good agreement with the recent Lattice calculations. We also calculate the ratio $(M_{B^*}-M_{B})$/$(M_{D^*}-M_{D})$. In these calculations the wave function at origin $ψ(0)$ is essential. We also determine $p_{_F}$ by comparing the theoretical prediction of the ACCMM model with the lepton energy spectrum of $B \rightarrow e νX$ from the recent ARGUS analysis, and find that $p_{_F}=0.27~\pm~^{0.22}_{0.27}$ GeV, when we use $m_c=1.5$ GeV. However, this experimentally determined value of $p_{_F}$ is strongly dependent on the value of input parameter $m_c$.

Form Factors for Exclusive Semileptonic $B$--Decays

We developed the new parton model approach for exclusive semileptonic decays of $B$-meson to $D,~D^*$ by extending the inclusive parton model, and by combining with the results of the HQET, motivated by Drell-Yan process. Without the nearest pole dominance ansätze, we {\bf derived} the dependences of hadronic form factors on $q^2$. We also calculated numerically the slope of the Isgur-Wise function, which is consistent with the experimental results.

Dependence of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ on Fermi momentum $p_{_F}$ in ACCMM model

The Gaussian width of Fermi momentum, $p_{_F}$, is the most important parameter of the ACCMM model, and its value is essential in the determination of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ because the experimental analysis is allowed only at the end-point region of inclusive semileptonic $B$-decay spectrum. We extract the value of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ as a function of $p_{_F}$. We also calculate the parameter $p_{_F}$ in the relativistic quark model using the variational method, and obtain $p_{_F} = 0.54$ GeV which is much larger than the commonly used value, $\sim 0.3$ GeV, in experimental analyses. When we use $p_{_F} = 0.5$ GeV instead of 0.3 GeV, the value of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ from ACCMM model is increased by a factor 1.81, and can give a good agreement with Isgur {\it et al.} model.

J/Psi Decay Lepton Distribution in Hadronic Collisions

We propose the measurement of the decay angular distribution of leptons from J/Psi's produced at high transverse momentum balanced by a photon [or gluon] in hadronic collisions. The polar and azimuthal angular distribution are calculated in the color singlet model (CSM). It is shown that the general structure of the decay lepton distribution is controlled by four invariant structure functions, which are functions of the transverse momentum and the rapidity of the J/Psi. We found that two of these structure functions [the longitudinal and transverse interference structure functions] are identical in the CSM. We present analytical and numerical results in the Collins-Soper and in the Gottfried-Jackson frame.

INVESTIGATION OF $WWγ$ COUPLINGS

We investigated how measurements of weak boson production at high energy $ep$ and $eγ$ collisions can provide important information on anomalous $WWγ$ couplings. We also considerd the sinlge muon production through the virtual $W$-decay at the Pohang Light Source (PLS) facility, and found this process is not adequate to be detected at the PLS until a large luminosity ($\sim 10^{33}$/sec/cm$^2$) Free Electron Laser is installed.

Measuring~~$|V_{ub}|$~~at~~the~~LEP/SLC

We show that the observation of energetic charged leptons from semileptonic $B$-meson decays at the LEP and SLC $Z$--boson factories offers a unique opportunity to measure the quark mixing matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. We present various distributions of the $B$ decay products to show that the $b \to u$ decays can be cleanly separated from the $b \to c$ decays, with a signal of $O(100)$ events per million $Z$ bosons produced.

Fermi motion parameter $p_{_F}$ of $B$ meson from relativistic quark model

The Fermi motion parameter $p_{_F}$ is the most important parameter of ACCMM model, and the value $p_{_F} \sim 0.3$ GeV has been used without clear theoretical or experimental evidence. So, we attempted to calculate the value for $p_{_F}$ theoretically in the relativistic quark model using quantum mechanical variational method. We obtained $p_{_F} \sim 0.5$ GeV, which is somewhat larger than 0.3 GeV, and we also derived the eigenvalue of $E_B \simeq 5.5$ GeV, which is in reasonable agreement with $m_B=5.28$ GeV. We also recalculated $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ as a function of $p_{_F}$.

Novel Approach to Confront Electroweak Data and Theory

A novel approach to study electroweak physics at one-loop level in generic ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories is introduced. It separates the 1-loop corrections into two pieces: process specific ones from vertex and box contributions, and universal ones from contributions to the gauge boson propagators. The latter are parametrized in terms of four effective form factors $\bar{e}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{s}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{g}_Z^2(q^2)$ and $\bar{g}_W^2 (q^2)$ corresponding to the $γγ$, $γZ$, $ZZ$ and $WW$ propagators. Under the assumption that only the Standard Model contributes to the process specific corrections, the magnitudes of the four form factors are determined at $q^2=0$ and at $q^2=\mmz$ by fitting to all available precision experiments. These values are then compared systematically with predictions of ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories. In all fits $α_s(\mz)$ and $\barα(\mmz)$ are treated as external parameters in order to keep the interpretation as flexible as possible. The treatment of the electroweak data is presented in detail together with the relevant theoretical formulae used to interpret the data. No deviation from the Standard Model has been identified. Ranges of the top quark and Higgs boson masses are derived as functions of $α_s(\mz)$ and $\barα(\mmz)$. Also discussed are consequences of the recent precision measurement of the left-right asymmetry at SLC as well as the impact of a top quark mass and an improved $W$ mass measurement.
