An example of non-homeomorphic conjugate varieties

We give examples of smooth quasi-projective varieties over complex numbers, in the context of connected Shimura varieties, which are not homeomorphic to a conjugate of itself by an automorphism of the complex numbers.

On Cohomology theory for topological groups

We construct some new cohomology theories for topological groups and Lie groups and study some of its basic properties. For example, we introduce a cohomology theory based on measurable cochains which are continuous in a neighbourhood of identity. We show that if G and A are locally compact and second countable, then the second cohomology group based on locally continuous measurable cochains as above parametrizes the collection of locally split extensions of G by A.

On a spectral analogue of the strong multiplicity one theorem

We prove spectral analogues of the classical strong multiplicity one theorem for newforms. Let $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ be uniform lattices in a semisimple group $G$. Suppose all but finitely many irreducible unitary representations (resp. spherical) of $G$ occur with equal multiplicities in $L^{2}(Γ_1 \backslash G)$ and $L^{2}(Γ_2 \backslash G)$. Then $L^{2}(Γ_1 \backslash G) \cong L^{2}(Γ_2 \backslash G)$ as $G$ - modules (resp. the spherical spectra of $L^{2}(Γ_1 \backslash G)$ and $L^{2}(Γ_2 \backslash G)$ are equal).

Recovering modular forms and representations from tensor and symmetric powers

We consider the problem of determining the relationship between two representations knowing that some tensor or symmetric power of the original represetations coincide. Combined with refinements of strong multiplicity one, we show that if the characters of some tensor or symmetric powers of two absolutely irreducible $l$-adic representation with the algebraic envelope of the image being connected, agree at the Frobenius elements corresponding to a set of places of positive upper density, then the representations are twists of each other by a finite order character.

On isospectral arithmetical spaces

We study the relationship between the arithmetic and the spectrum of the Laplacian for manifolds arising from congruent arithmetic subgroups of SL(1,D), where D is an indefinite quaternion division algebra defined over a number field F. We give new examples of isospectral but non-isometric compact, arithmetically defined varieties, generalizing the class of examples constructed by Vigneras. These examples are based on an interplay between the simply connected and adjoint group and depend explicitly on the failure of strong approximation for the adjoint group. The examples can be considered as a geometric analogue and also as an application of the concept and results on L-indistinguishability for SL(1,D) due to Labesse and Langlands. We verify that the Hasse-Weil zeta functions are equal for the examples of isospectral pair of Shimura varieties we construct giving further evidence for an archimedean analogue of Tate's conjecture, which expects that the spectrum of the Laplacian determines the arithmetic of such spaces.

Distinguished representations, base change, and reducibility for unitary groups

We show the equality of the local Asai L-functions defined via the Rankin-Selberg method and the Langlands-Shahidi method for a square integrable representation of GL(n,E). As a consequence we characterise reducibility of certain induced representations of U(n,n), and the image of the base change map from U(n) to GL(n,E) in terms of GL(n,F)-distinguishedness.

Congruences for rational points on varieties over finite fields

We show that the number of rational points on the fibres of a proper morphism of smooth varieties over a finite field k whose generic fibre has a ``trival'' Chow group of zero cycles is congruent to 1 mod |k|. As a consequence we prove that there is a rational point on any degeneration of a smooth proper rationally chain connected variety over a finite field. We also obtain a generalisation of the Chevalley-Warning theorem.

On the vanishing of the measurable Schur cohomology groups of Weil groups

We generalize a theorem of Tate and show that the second cohomology of the Weil group of a global or local field with coefficients in $\C^*$ (or more generally, with coefficients in the complex points of a tori over $\C$) vanish, where the cohomology groups are defined using measurable cochains in the sense of Moore. We recover a theorem of Labesse proving that admissible homomorphisms of a Weil group to the Langlands dual of a reductive group can be lifted to an extension of the Langlands dual group by a tori.

On the non-vanishing of the first Betti number of hyperbolic three manifolds

We show the non-vanishing of cohomology groups of sufficiently small congruence lattices in $SL(1,D)$, where $D$ is a quaternion division algebras defined over a number field $E$ contained inside a solvable extension of a totally real number field. As a corollary, we obtain new examples of compact, arithmetic, hyperbolic three manifolds, with non-torsion first homology group, confirming a conjecture of Thurston. The proof uses the characterisation of the image of solvable base change by the author, and the construction of cusp forms with non-zero cusp cohomology by Labesse and Schwermer.

On strong multiplicity one for automorphic representations

We extend the strong multiplicity one theorem of Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro and Shalika. Let $π$ be a unitary, cuspidal, automorphic representation of $GL_n(\A_K)$. Let $S$ be a set of finite places of $K$, such that the sum $\sum_{v\in S}Nv^{-2/(n^2+1)}$ is convergent. Then $π$ is uniquely determined by the collection of the local components $\{π_v\mid v\not\in S, ~v \~\text{finite}\}$ of $π$. Combining this theorem with base change, it is possible to consider sets $S$ of positive density, having appropriate splitting behavior with respect to solvable extensions of $K$, and where $π$ is determined upto twisting by a character of the Galois group of $L$ over $K$.

On Langlands functoriality- reduction to the semistable case

We generalize a beautiful method of Blasius and Ramakrishnan, that in order to exhibit particular instances of the Langlands functorial correspondence, it is enough to show that the correspondence holds in the semistable case, provided the arithmetic data we are considering is closed with respect to cyclic base change and descent.

Recovering l-adic representations

We consider the problem of recovering l-adic representations from a knowledge of the character values at the Frobenius elements associated to l-adic representations constructed algebraically out of the original representations. These results generalize earlier results in of the author concerning refinements of strong multiplicity one for $l$-adic represntations, and a result of Ramakrishnan recovering modular forms from a knowledge of the squares of the Hecke eigenvalues. For example, we show that if the characters of some tensor or symmetric powers of two absolutely irreducible l-adic representation with the algebraic envelope of the image being connected, agree at the Frobenius elements corresponding to a set of places of positive upper density, then the representations are twists of each other by a finite order character.

On an Archimedean analogue of Tate's conjecture

We consider an Archimedean analogue of Tate's conjecture, and verify the conjecture in the examples of isospectral Riemann surfaces constructed by Vigneras and Sunada. We also enunciate a simple lemma in group theory which lies at the heart of T. Sunada's theorem about isospectral manifolds.

Frobenius splitting and ordinarity

We examine the relationship between the notion of Frobenius splitting and ordinarity for varieties. We show the following: a) The de Rham-Witt cohomology groups $H^i(X, W({\mathcal O}_X))$ of a smooth projective Frobenius split variety are finitely generated over $W(k)$. b) we provide counterexamples to a question of V. B. Mehta that Frobenius split varieties are ordinary or even Hodge-Witt. c) a Kummer $K3$ surface associated to an Abelian surface is $F$-split (ordinary) if and only if the associated Abelian surface is $F$-split (ordinary). d) for a $K3$-surface defined over a number field, there is a set of primes of density one in some finite extension of the base field, over which the surface acquires ordinary reduction. This paper should be read along with first author's paper `Exotic torsion, Frobenius splitting and the slope spectral sequence' which is also available in this archive.

On Heegner points of large conductors

Given a parametrisation of an elliptic curve over Q by a Shimura curve, we show that the images of almost all Heegner points are of infinite order. For parametrisations of elliptic curves by modular curves this was proven earlier by Nekovar and Schappacher by a different method.
