Complex generalized spin-c Killing spinors in low dimensions

We classify all complex generalized spin-c Killing spinors with complex Killing function $iμ-α$ on complete Riemannian surfaces, presenting an explicit list of all possible cases. We show that, contrary to previous statements in the literature, there exist complex generalized spin-c Killing spinors on Riemannian surfaces for which $αμ\not\equiv0$. We illustrate the classification by providing several explicit local, compact, and complete examples, including a complete example for which $αμ>0$ everywhere. We then move to three dimensions, proving that a spin-c Riemannian three-manifold admits a complex generalized spin-c Killing spinor with complex Killing function $iμ-α$ if and only if it is a $μ$-exact trans-Sasakian manifold of type $(α,μ)$. In addition, we construct a geodesically incomplete Riemannian three-manifold equipped with a complex generalized spin-c Killing spinor for which neither $μ$ nor $α$ vanishes identically, and then prove that this is not possible if the characteristic vector field of the associated trans-Sasakian structure is complete. These results settle a conjecture by Große and Nakad (Results in Mathematics, 2015) stating that on two- and three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds the complex Killing function of any complex generalized spin-c Killing spinor must be either globally real or globally imaginary.

Kenmotsu manifolds and spin-c Killing spinors

Using the theory of complex spinorial forms, we prove that an odd-dimensional Riemannian manifold admits a pure spin-c Killing spinor with an imaginary Killing function $iμ$ if and only if it is an exact $μ$-Kenmotsu manifold, thereby obtaining an extension of a recent result by the first named author that, under the purity assumption, does not require simple connectivity or completeness. We then reinterpret $μ$-Kenmotsu manifolds in terms of metric connections with vectorial torsion and give a second proof of this characterization, combining the theory of complex spinorial forms with the theory of metric connections with torsion. Finally, we describe the global structure of exact $μ$-Kenmotsu manifolds by means of Morse-Bott theory.

Sasakian manifolds and spin-c Killing spinors

Using the theory of complex spinorial forms, we prove that an odd-dimensional Riemannian manifold admits a pure spin-c Killing spinor with a real Killing constant $α\in\mathbb{R}^{\ast}$ if and only if it is $α$-Sasakian, thereby obtaining an extension of a well-known result by A. Moroianu that, under the purity assumption, does not require simple connectivity or completeness.

Complex spinorial forms, Brinkmann four-manifolds, and self-dual bundle gerbes

We develop the differential theory of complex spinorial forms associated with irreducible complex spinors across all dimensions and signatures. This framework enables the study of constrained parallelicity conditions for irreducible complex spinors by reformulating them as equivalent differential systems for exterior forms within a prescribed semi-algebraic body of the Kähler-Atiyah bundle. To illustrate this approach, we first apply it to the spin-c Killing spinor equation in low dimensions, refining existing results by relaxing standard assumptions of simply connectedness and completeness. Then, we proceed to apply our framework to supersymmetry conditions in supergravity, and we prove that every quasi-supersymmetric solution of Freedman's gauged supergravity belongs to an explicit four-parameter family of geodesically complete, globally hyperbolic gyratonic Brinkmann waves with spherical wave fronts. Finally, we study the quasi-supersymmetric solutions of six-dimensional minimal supergravity, defined by a system that couples a self-dual curving on a bundle gerbe to a Lorentzian metric with an irreducible chiral spinor parallel under a metric connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion given by the curvature of the aforementioned curving. Along the way, we prove that a Lorentzian six-manifold admits a skew-torsion parallel spinor with an integrable screen bundle only if it admits a foliation whose leaves are locally conformally Kähler complex surfaces.

Three-dimensional compact Heterotic solitons with parallel torsion

We obtain a rigidity result for compact three-dimensional Heterotic solitons with parallel non-trivial torsion. We show that they are either hyperbolic three-manifolds or compact quotients of the Heisenberg group equipped with a left-invariant metric. In particular, the latter arise both as solitons with completely skew-symmetric torsion as well as with non-vanishing twistorial component. As a corollary, we obtain the universal bound $-24$ for the scalar curvature of Heterotic solitons with parallel skew-symmetric torsion, which prevents it from being arbitrarily large.

The Cauchy problem for gradient generalized Ricci solitons on a bundle gerbe

We prove well-posedness of the analytic Cauchy problem for gradient generalized Ricci solitons on an abelian bundle gerbe and solve the initial data equations on every compact Riemann surface. Along the way, we provide a novel characterization of the self-similar solutions of the generalized Ricci flow by means of families of automorphisms of the underlying abelian bundle gerbe covering families of diffeomorphisms isotopic to the identity.

The algebraic square of an irreducible complex spinor

We characterize, in every dimension and signature, the algebraic squares of an irreducible complex spinor as a pair of exterior forms satisfying a prescribed system of algebraic relations that we present in terms of the geometric product of the underlying quadratic vector space. As a result, we obtain a general correspondence between irreducible complex spinors and algebraically constrained exterior forms, which clarifies the subtle relationship between spinors and exterior forms and contributes towards the understanding of spinors as the square root of geometry. We use this formalism to construct the squares of an irreducible complex spinor in Euclidean dimensions up to six, and also to construct the squares of a generic, possibly non-pure and non-unit, irreducible complex chiral spinor in eight Euclidean dimensions. Elaborating on this result, we consider a natural notion of spinorial instanton that we study for connections on a principal bundle with a complex structure group as well as for curvings of a $\mathbb{C}^{\ast}$-bundle gerbe defined on a Lorentzian six-manifold.

Torsion parallel spinors on Lorentzian four-manifolds and supersymmetric evolution flows on bundle gerbes

This dissertation is concerned with the geometric study of differential spinors on oriented and spin Lorentzian four-manifolds via the theory of spinorial polyforms. The main results and applications are directed towards the investigation of torsion parallel spinors and the globally hyperbolic evolution flow determined by the globally hyperbolic solutions of the four-dimensional supersymmetric NS-NS system. This differential system, which originates in supergravity and string theory, involves skew-torsion parallel spinors subject to a curvature condition and provides a natural gauge-theoretic interpretation of skew-symmetric torsion as the curvature of a connection on an abelian bundle gerbe - a natural categorification of the notion of principal circle bundle.

The local moduli space of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system

We study the deformation theory of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system on a principal bundle with a compact structure group over a compact manifold. We first construct, as an application of the general slice theorem of Diez and Rudolph, a smooth slice in the tame Fréchet category for the coupled action of bundle automorphisms on metrics and connections. Using this result, together with a careful analysis of the linearization of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system, we realize the moduli space of Einstein-Yang-Mills pairs modulo automorphism as an analytic set in a finite-dimensional tame Fréchet manifold, extending classical results of Koiso for Einstein metrics and Yang-Mills connections to the Einstein-Yang-Mills system. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of \emph{essential deformation} of an Einstein-Yang-Mills pair, which we characterize in full generality and explore in more detail in the four-dimensional case, proving a decoupling result for trace deformations when the underlying Einstein-Yang-Mills pair is a Ricci-flat metric coupled to an anti-self-dual instanton. In particular, we find a novel obstruction that does not occur in the \emph{decoupled} Einstein or Yang-Mills moduli problems. Finally, we prove that every essential deformation of the four-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills system based on a Calabi-Yau metric coupled to an instanton is of restricted type.

Parallel spinors for $\mathrm{G}_2^*$ and isotropic structures

We obtain a correspondence between irreducible real parallel spinors on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ of signature $(4,3)$ and solutions of an associated differential system for three-forms that satisfy a homogeneous algebraic equation of order two in the Kähler-Atiyah bundle of $(M,g)$. Applying this general framework, we obtain an intrinsic algebraic characterization of $\mathrm{G}_2^*$-structures as well as the first explicit description of isotropic irreducible spinors in signature $(4,3)$ that are parallel under a general connection on the spinor bundle. This description is given in terms of a coherent system of mutually orthogonal and isotropic one forms and follows from the characterization of the stabilizer of an isotropic spinor as the stabilizer of a highly degenerate three-form that we construct explicitly. Using this result, we show that isotropic spinors parallel under a metric connection with torsion exist when the connection preserves the aforementioned coherent system. This allows us to construct a natural class of metrics of signature $(4,3)$ on $\mathbb{R}^7$ that admit spinors parallel under a metric connection with torsion.

A functional for Spin(7) forms

We characterize the set of all conformal Spin(7) forms on an oriented and spin Riemannian eight-manifold $(M,g)$ as solutions to a homogeneous algebraic equation of degree two for the self-dual four-forms of $(M,g)$. When $M$ is compact, we use this result to construct a functional whose self-dual critical set is precisely the set of all Spin(7) structures on $M$. Furthermore, the natural coupling of this potential to the Einstein-Hilbert action gives a functional whose self-dual critical points are conformally Ricci-flat Spin(7) structures. Our proof relies on the computation of the square of an irreducible and chiral real spinor as a section of a bundle of real algebraic varieties sitting inside the Kähler-Atiyah bundle of $(M,g)$.

Differential spinors and Kundt three-manifolds with skew-torsion

We develop the theory of spinorial polyforms associated with bundles of irreducible Clifford modules of non-simple real type, obtaining a precise characterization of the square of an irreducible real spinor in signature $(p-q) = 1\,\mathrm{mod(8)}$ as a polyform belonging to a semi-algebraic real set. We use this formalism to study differential spinors on Lorentzian three-manifolds, proving that in this dimension and signature, every differential spinor is equivalent to an isotropic line preserved in a given direction by a metric connection with prescribed torsion. We apply this result to investigate Lorentzian three-manifolds equipped with a skew-torsion parallel spinor, namely a spinor parallel with respect to a metric connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. We obtain several structural results about this class of Lorentzian three-manifolds, which are necessarily Kundt, and in the compact case, we obtain an explicit differential condition that guarantees geodesic completeness. We further elaborate on these results to study the supersymmetric solutions of three-dimensional NS-NS supergravity, which involve skew-torsion parallel spinors whose torsion is given by the curvature of a curving on an abelian bundle gerbe. In particular, we obtain a correspondence between NS-NS supersymmetric solutions and null coframes satisfying an explicit exterior differential system that we solve locally.

The Heterotic-Ricci flow and its three-dimensional solitons

We introduce a novel curvature flow, the Heterotic-Ricci flow, as the two-loop renormalization group flow of the Heterotic string common sector and study its three-dimensional compact solitons. The Heterotic-Ricci flow is a coupled curvature evolution flow, depending on a non-negative real parameter $κ$, for a complete Riemannian metric and a three-form $H$ on a manifold $M$. Its most salient feature is that it involves several terms quadratic in the curvature tensor of a metric connection with skew-symmetric torsion $H$. When $κ= 0$ the Heterotic-Ricci flow reduces to the generalized Ricci flow and hence it can be understood as a modification of the latter via the second-order correction prescribed by Heterotic string theory, whereas when $H=0$ and $κ>0$ the Heterotic-Ricci flow reduces to a constrained version of the RG-2 flow and hence it can be understood as a generalization of the latter via the introduction of the three-form $H$. Solutions of Heterotic supergravity with trivial gauge bundle, which we call Heterotic solitons, define a particular class of three-dimensional solitons for the Heterotic-Ricci flow and constitute our main object of study. We prove a number of structural results for three-dimensional Heterotic solitons, obtaining the complete classification of compact three-dimensional strong Heterotic solitons as hyperbolic three-manifolds or quotients of the Heisenberg group equipped with a left-invariant metric. Furthermore, we prove that all Einstein three-dimensional Heterotic solitons have constant dilaton. In this direction, we prove that Einstein Heterotic solitons with constant dilaton are rigid and therefore cannot be deformed into a solution with non-constant dilaton. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first rigidity result for compact supergravity solutions in the literature.

Supersymmetric Kundt four manifolds and their spinorial evolution flows

We investigate the differential geometry and topology of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds $(M,g)$ equipped with a real Killing spinor $\varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon$ is defined as a section of a bundle of irreducible real Clifford modules satisfying the Killing spinor equation with non-zero real constant. Such triples $(M,g,\varepsilon)$ are precisely the supersymmetric configurations of minimal four-dimensional supergravity and necessarily belong to the class Kundt of space-times, hence we refer to them as supersymmetric Kundt configurations. We characterize a class of Lorentzian metrics on $\mathbb{R}^2\times X$, where $X$ is a two-dimensional oriented manifold, to which every supersymmetric Kundt configuration is locally isometric, proving that $X$ must be an elementary hyperbolic Riemann surface when equipped with the natural induced metric. This yields a class of space-times that vastly generalize the Siklos class of space-times describing gravitational waves in AdS$_4$. Furthermore, we study the Cauchy problem posed by a real Killing spinor and we prove that the corresponding evolution problem is equivalent to a system of differential flow equations, the real Killing spinorial flow equations, for a family of functions and coframes on any Cauchy hypersurface $Σ\subset M$. Using this formulation, we prove that the evolution flow defined by a real Killing spinor preserves the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints of the Einstein equation with negative curvature and is therefore compatible with the latter. Moreover, we explicitly construct all left-invariant evolution flows defined by a Killing spinor on a simply connected three-dimensional Lie group, classifying along the way all solutions to the corresponding constraint equations, some of which also satisfy the constraint equations associated to the Einstein condition.

Parallel spinor flows on three-dimensional Cauchy hypersurfaces

The three-dimensional parallel spinor flow is the evolution flow defined by a parallel spinor on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian four-manifold. We prove that, despite the fact that Lorentzian metrics admitting parallel spinors are not necessarily Ricci flat, the parallel spinor flow preserves the vacuum momentum and Hamiltonian constraints and therefore the Einstein and parallel spinor flows coincide on common initial data. Using this result, we provide an initial data characterization of parallel spinors on Ricci flat Lorentzian four-manifolds, which in turn yields the first initial data characterization of Ricci-flat pp-waves. Furthermore, we explicitly solve the left-invariant parallel spinor flow on simply connected Lie groups, obtaining along the way necessary and sufficient conditions for the flow to be immortal. These are, to the best of our knowledge, the first non-trivial examples of evolution flows of parallel spinors. Finally, we use some of these examples to construct families of $η\,$-Einstein cosymplectic structures and to produce solutions to the left-invariant Ricci flow in three dimensions. This suggests the intriguing possibility of using first-order hyperbolic spinorial flows to construct special solutions of curvature flows in Riemannian signature.

Higher Geometric Structures on Manifolds and the Gauge Theory of Deligne Cohomology

We study smooth higher symmetry groups and moduli $\infty$-stacks of generic higher geometric structures on manifolds. Symmetries are automorphisms which cover non-trivial diffeomorphisms of the base manifold. We construct the smooth higher symmetry group of any geometric structure on $M$ and show that this completely classifies, via a universal property, equivariant structures on the higher geometry. We construct moduli stacks of higher geometric data as $\infty$-categorical quotients by the action of the higher symmetries, extract information about the homotopy types of these moduli $\infty$-stacks, and prove a helpful sufficient criterion for when two such higher moduli stacks are equivalent. In the second part of the paper we study higher $\mathrm{U}(1)$-connections. First, we observe that higher connections come organised into higher groupoids, which further carry affine actions by Baez-Crans-type higher vector spaces. We compute a presentation of the higher gauge actions for $n$-gerbes with $k$-connection, comment on the relation to higher-form symmetries, and present a new String group model. We construct smooth moduli $\infty$-stacks of higher Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell solutions, correcting previous such considerations in the literature, and compute the homotopy groups of several moduli $\infty$-stacks of higher $\mathrm{U}(1)$- connections. Finally, we show that a discrepancy between two approaches to the differential geometry of NSNS supergravity (via generalised and higher geometry, respectively) vanishes at the level of moduli $\infty$-stacks of NSNS supergravity solutions.

Heterotic solitons on four-manifolds

We investigate four-dimensional Heterotic solitons, defined as a particular class of solutions of the equations of motion of Heterotic supergravity on a four-manifold $M$. Heterotic solitons depend on a parameter $κ$ and consist of a Riemannian metric $g$, a metric connection with skew torsion $H$ on $TM$ and a closed one-form $φ$ on $M$ satisfying a differential system. In the limit $κ\to 0$, Heterotic solitons reduce to a class of generalized Ricci solitons and can be considered as a higher-order curvature modification of the latter. If the torsion $H$ is equal to the Hodge dual of $φ$, Heterotic solitons consist of either flat tori or closed Einstein-Weyl structures on manifolds of type $S^1\times S^3$ as introduced by P. Gauduchon. We prove that the moduli space of such closed Einstein-Weyl structures is isomorphic to the product of $\mathbb{R}$ with a certain finite quotient of the Cartan torus of the isometry group of the typical fiber of a natural fibration $M\to S^1$. We also consider the associated space of essential infinitesimal deformations, which we prove to be obstructed. More generally, we characterize several families of Heterotic solitons as suspensions of certain three-manifolds with prescribed constant principal Ricci curvatures, amongst which we find hyperbolic manifolds, manifolds covered by $\widetilde{\mathrm{Sl}}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and E$(1,1)$ or certain Sasakian three-manifolds. These solutions exhibit a topological dependence in the string slope parameter $κ$ and yield, to the best of our knowledge, the first examples of Heterotic compactification backgrounds not locally isomorphic to supersymmetric compactification backgrounds.
