Spin polarization, dephasing and photoinduced spin diffusion in (110)-grown two-dimensional electron systems

We study the optically induced spin polarization, spin dephasing and diffusion in several high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems, which are embedded in GaAs quantum wells grown on (110)-oriented substrates. The experimental techniques comprise a two-beam magneto-optical spectroscopy system and polarization-resolved photoluminescence. Under weak excitation conditions at liquid-helium temperatures, we observe spin lifetimes above 100 ns in one of our samples, which are reduced with increasing excitation density due to additional, hole-mediated, spin dephasing. The spin dynamic is strongly influenced by the carrier density and the ionization of remote donors, which can be controlled by temperature and above-barrier illumination. The absolute value of the average electron spin polarization in the samples is directly observable in the circular polarization of photoluminescence collected under circularly polarized excitation and reaches values of about 5 percent. Spin diffusion is studied by varying the distance between pump and probe beams in micro-spectroscopy experiments. We observe diffusion lengths above 100 $μ$m and, at high excitation intensity, a nonmonotonic dependence of the spin polarization on the pump-probe distance.

Confined optical phonon modes in polar tetrapod nanocrystals detected by resonant inelastic light scattering

We investigated CdTe nanocrystal tetrapods of different sizes by resonant inelastic light scattering at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions. We observe a strongly resonant behavior of the phonon scattering with the excitonic structure of the tetrapods. Under resonant conditions we detect a set of phonon modes that can be understood as confined longitudinal-optical phonons, surface-optical phonons, and transverse-optical phonons in a nanowire picture.

Oscillator strengths of dark charged excitons in the quantum Hall regime

By direct absorption spectroscopy and comparison to photoluminescence (PL), we investigate negatively charged excitons in dilute two-dimensional electron systems at temperatures down to T=40 mK in the regime of the fractional quantum Hall effect. At very low temperatures, for filling factor ν< 1/3, an additional excitation appears in the PL spectrum, between the well-known singlet and triplet excitons. The observation of a similar excitation by PL was reported very recently [G. Yusa et al., cond-mat0103561], and the excitation was assigned, in spite of a PL intensity similar to that of the neutral exciton, to be due to a dark triplet exciton. By comparing PL and direct absorption spectra in optically thin samples at T<100 mK, we can identify the new excitation indeed as a 'dark' mode, since we find that the oscillator strength is much smaller than those of the 'bright' modes.
