A Work Proposal for a Collaborative Study of Magnet Technology for a Future Muon Collider

In this paper we elaborate on the nature and challenges for the magnet systems of a muon collider as presently considered within the scope of the International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC). We outline the structure of the work proposed over the coming period of five years to study and demonstrate relevant magnet technology. The proposal, which is part of the overall work planned to establish feasibility of a muon collider, is in direct response to the recent recommendations received from the Laboratories Directors Group (LDG). The plan is to profit from joint activities, within the scope of the IMCC and beyond, implemented through direct and EU-funded contributions.

Strong improvement of the transport characteristics of YBa$_\textrm{2}$Cu$_\textrm{3}$O$_\textrm{7-x}$ grain boundaries using ionic liquid gating

For more than 30 years, the remarkable superconducting properties of REBa$_\textrm{2}$Cu$_\textrm{3}$O$_\textrm{7-x}$ (RE = rare earth) compounds have triggered research studies across the world. Accordingly, significant progresses have been made both from a basic understanding and a fabrication processes perspective. Yet, today, the major technological bottleneck towards the spread of their practical uses remains the exponential decay of their critical current with grain misorientation in polycrystalline samples. In this work, we used an ionic liquid to apply extremely high transverse electric fields to YBa$_\textrm{2}$Cu$_\textrm{3}$O$_\textrm{7-x}$ thin films containing a single well-defined low-angle grain boundary. Our study shows that this technique is very effective to tune the IV characteristics of these weak-links. In-magnetic field measurements allow us to discuss the type of the vortices present at the grain boundary and to unveil a large variation of the local depairing current density with gating. Comparing our results with the ones obtained on chemically-doped grain boundaries, we discuss routes to evaluate the role of local strain in the loss of transparency at cuprates low-angle grain boundaries. In short, this study offers a new opportunity to discuss scenarios leading to the reduced transport capabilities of grain boundaries in cuprates.

Ionic liquid gating of ultra-thinYBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ films

In this paper, we present a detailed investigation of the self-field transport properties of an ionic liquid gated ultra-thin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ film. From the high temperature dynamic of the resistivity ($> 220 \textrm{ K}$) different scenarios pertaining to the interaction between the liquid and the thin film are proposed. From the low temperature evolution of $J_{\textrm{c}}$ and $T_{\textrm{c}}$ a comparison between the behavior of our system and the standard properties of YBCO is drawn.

Assessing composition gradients in multifilamentary superconductors by means of magnetometry methods

We present two magnetometry-based methods suitable for assessing gradients in the critical temperature and hence the composition of multifilamentary superconductors: AC magnetometry and Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy. The novelty of the former technique lies in the iterative evaluation procedure we developed, whereas the strength of the latter is the direct visualization of the temperature dependent penetration of a magnetic field into the superconductor. Using the example of a PIT Nb3Sn wire, we demonstrate the application of these techniques, and compare the respective results to each other and to EDX measurements of the Sn distribution within the sub-elements of the wire.

BiOCuS: A new superconducting compound with oxypnictide - related structure

The discovery of about 50 K superconductivity in the tetragonal Fe-based pnictides has stimulated the search for superconductivity in a wide class of materials with similar structure. Copper forms compounds isostructural to LaOFeAs. Single phase BiOCuS can be prepared by a solid state reaction at temperature lower than 500 C from a mixture of Bi2O3, Bi2S3 and Cu2S. The samples have been characterized by means of EDX analysis, X-ray diffraction, magnetic and electrical measurements. The cell parameters are a = 3.8708 A, c = 8.565 A. Charge carrier doping can be realized either by F substitutions for O, or by Cu off-stoichiometry. The latter doping route leads to the occurrence of superconductivity below Tc = 5.8 K.

Real-space vortex glass imaging and the vortex phase diagram of SnMo6S8

Using scanning tunnelling microscopy at 400mK, we have obtained maps of around 100 vortices in SnMo6S8 from 2 - 9T. The orientational and positional disorder at 5 and 9T show that these are the first large-scale images of a vortex glass. At higher temperature a magnetisation peak effect is observed, whose upper boundary coincides with a lambda anomaly in the specific heat. Our data favour a kinetic glass description of the vortex melting transition, indicating that vortex topological disorder persists at fields and temperatures far below the peak effect in low-Tc superconductors.

Strong enhancement of Jc in binary and alloyed in-situ MgB2 wires by a new approach: Cold high pressure densification

Cold high pressure densification (CHPD) is presented as a new way to substantially enhance the critical current density of in situ MgB2 wires at 4.2 and 20 K at fields between 5 and 14 T. The results on two binary MgB2 wires and an alloyed wire with 10 wt.% B4C are presented The strongest enhancement was measured at 20K, where cold densification at 1.85 GPa on a binary Fe/MgB2 wire raised both Jcpara and Jcperp by more than 300% at 5T, while Birr was enhanced by 0.7 T. At 4.2K, the enhancement of Jc was smaller, but still reached 53% at 10 T. After applying pressures up to 6.5 GPa, the mass density dm of the unreacted (B+Mg) mixture inside the filaments reached 96% of the theoretical density. After reaction under atmospheric pressure, this corresponds to a highest mass density df in the MgB2 filaments of 73%. After reaction, the electrical resistance of wires submitted to cold densification was found to decrease, reflecting an improved connectivity. A quantitative correlation between filament mass density and the physical properties was established. Monofilamentary rectangular wires with aspect ratios a/b < 1.25 based on low energy ball milled powders exhibited very low anisotropy ratios, Gamma = Jcpara/Jcperp being < 1.4 at 4.2 K and 10T. The present results can be generalized to alloyed MgB2 wires, as demonstrated on a wire with B4C additives. Based on the present data, it follows that cold densification has the potential of further improving the highest Jcpara and Jcperp values reported so far for in situ MgB2 tapes and wires with SiC and C additives. Investigations are under work in our laboratory to determine whether the densification method CHPD can be applied to longer wire or tape lengths.

Upper critical fields well above 100 T for the superconductor SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ with T$_c$ = 46 K

We report specific heat measurements at magnetic fields up to 20 T on the recently discovered superconductor SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$. The B-T diagram of a polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ sample with T$_c$ = 46 K was investigated. The temperature dependence of B$_{c2}$ was extracted from the specific heat curves, the corresponding B$_{c2}$(T = 0) value derived from the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula being 150 T. Based on magnetization measurements up to 9 T, a first estimation of the field dependence of the inductive critical current J$_c$ is given. Evidence for granularity is found. The presence of a peak effect is reported, suggesting a crossover in the vortex dynamics, in analogy to the behaviour observed in high T$_c$ cuprates.

Far-infrared probe of superconductivity in SmO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs}

We report far-infrared reflectance measurements on polycrystalline superconducting samples of SmO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs ($x$ = 0.12, 0.15 and 0.2). We clearly observe superconductivity induced changes of reflectivity in a broad range of energies, which resembles earlier optical measurements on high $T_{c}$ cuprates. The superconducting-to-normal reflectivity ratio $R_{s}/R_{n}$ grows for the photon energies below 18 meV and shows a complicated structure due to the presence of a strong infrared-active phonon at about 10 meV.

Mechanism of enhancement of electromagnetic properties of MgB2 by nano-SiC doping

A comparative study of pure, SiC, and C doped MgB2 wires has revealed that the SiC doping allowed C substitution and MgB2 formation to take place simultaneously at low temperatures. C substitution enhances Hc2, while the defects, small grain size and nanoinclusions induced by C incorporation and low temperature processing are responsible for the improvement in Jc. The irreversibility field (Hirr) for the SiC doped sample reached the benchmarking value of 10 T at 20 K, exceeding that of NbTi at 4.2 K. This dual reaction model also enables us to predict desirable dopants for enhancing the performance properties of MgB2.

Improved critical current densities in B4C doped MgB2 based wires

An improvement of the transport critical current density, Jc, of MgB2 wires was obtained after addition of 10 wt.% B4C powders, after reaction at 800 C: Jc values of 1.10^4 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 9T were obtained for wires of 1.11 mm diameter in a Fe matrix. The starting mixture of Mg and B was doped with sub-micrometric B4C, the ratio being Mg : B : B4C = 1: 2 : 0.08, corresponding to 10 wt.% B4C. For T > 800 C, a decrease of Jc was found, due to the reaction with the Fe sheath. In order to investigate the origin of the improvement of the transport properties for heat treatments up to 800 C, X-ray diffraction measurements were performed. A decrease of the lattice constant a from 0.30854 nm to 0.30797 nm was found, thus suggesting an effect of the substitution of Carbon on the properties of the wires. A comparison with the literature data shows that the addition of B4C powders leads to the second highest improvement of Jc reported so far after SiC, thus constituting an alternative for future applications.

Magnetic relaxation of type II superconductors in a mixed state of entrapped and shielded flux

The magnetic relaxation has been investigated in type II superconductors when the initial magnetic state is realized with entrapped and shielded flux (ESF) contemporarily. This flux state is produced by an inversion in the magnetic field ramp rate due to for example a magnetic field overshoot. The investigation has been faced both numerically and by measuring the magnetic relaxation in BSCCO tapes. Numerical computations have been performed in the case of an infinite thick strip and of an infinite slab, showing a quickly relaxing magnetization in the first seconds. As verified experimentally, the effects of the overshoot cannot be neglected simply by cutting the first 10-100 seconds in the magnetic relaxation. On the other hand, at very long times, the magnetic states relax toward those corresponding to field profiles with only shielded flux or only entrapped flux, depending on the amplitude of the field change with respect to the full penetration field of the considered superconducting samples. In addition, we have performed numerical simulations in order to reproduce the relaxation curves measured on the BSCCO(2223) tapes; this allowed us to interpret correctly also the first seconds of the $M(t)$ curves.

Harmonics of the AC susceptibility as probes to differentiate the various creep models

We measured the temperature dependence of the 1st and the 3rd harmonics of the AC magnetic susceptibility on some type II superconducting samples at different AC field amplitudes, hAC. In order to interpret the measurements, we computed the harmonics of the AC susceptibility as function of the temperature T, by integrating the non-linear diffusion equation for the magnetic field with different creep models, namely the vortex glass-collective creep (single-vortex, small bundle and large bundle) and Kim-Anderson model. We also computed them by using a non-linear phenomenological I-V characteristics, including a power law dependence of the pinning potential on hAC. Our experimental results were compared with the numerically computed ones, by the analysis of the Cole-Cole plots. This method results more sensitive than the separate component analysis, giving the possibility to obtain detailed information about the contribution of the flux dynamic regimes in the magnetic response of the analysed samples.

Third Harmonic Susceptibility and the Irreversibility Line of Fe/MgB2 Tapes

We report a study of the pinning properties of Fe/MgB2 tapes performed by means of ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. In particular, the third harmonic response has been measured as a function of the dc magnetic field up to 9 T, at different temperatures, for various frequencies and amplitudes of the ac field. The irreversibility line has been determined using the third harmonic onset criterion for samples made with different ball-milled MgB2 powders. The study of the harmonic response allows us to probe the nature of the vortex pinning and to analyse its influence on the enhancement of the irreversibility field in strongly ball-milled samples. We have also investigated the dynamical regimes governing the vortex motion in the tapes by comparing the experimental curves with numerical simulations of the non-linear diffusion equation for the magnetic field.

Transport Properties and Exponential n-values of Fe/MgB2 Tapes With Various MgB2 Particle Sizes

Fe/MgB2 tapes have been prepared starting with pre-reacted binary MgB2 powders. As shown by resistive and inductive measurements, the reduction of particle size to a few microns by ball milling has little influence on Bc2, while the superconducting properties of the individual MgB2 grains are essentially unchanged. Reducing the particle size causes an enhancement of Birr from 14 to 16 T, while Jc has considerably increased at high fields, its slope Jc(B) being reduced. At 4.2K, values of 5.3*10^4 and 1.2*10^3 A/cm^2 were measured at 3.5 and 10 T, respectively, suggesting a dominant role of the conditions at the grain interfaces. A systematic variation of these conditions at the interfaces is undertaken in order to determine the limit of transport properties for Fe/MgB2 tapes. The addition of 5% Mg to MgB2 powder was found to affect neither Jc nor Bc2. For the tapes with the highest Jc values, very high exponential n factors were measured: n = 148, 89 and 17 at 3.5, 5 and 10T, respectively and measurements of critical current versus applied strain have been performed. The mechanism leading to high transport critical current densities of filamentary Fe/MgB2 tapes based on MgB2 particles is discussed.

Detection of the Vortex Dynamic Regimes in MgB2 by Third Harmonic AC Susceptibility Measurements

In a type-II superconductor the generation of higher harmonics in the magnetic response to an alternating magnetic field is a consequence of the non-linearity in the I-V relationship. The shape of the current-voltage (I-V) curve is determined by the current dependence of the thermal activation energy U(J) and is thus related to the dynamical regimes governing the vortex motion. In order to investigate the vortex dynamics in MgB2 bulk superconductors we have studied the fundamental (chi1) and third (chi3) harmonics of the ac magnetic susceptibility. Measurements have been performed as a function of the temperature and the dc magnetic field, up to 9 T, for various frequencies and amplitudes of the ac field. We show that the analysis of the behaviour in frequency of chi3(T) and chi3(B) curves can provide clear information about the non-linearity in different regions of the I-V characteristic. By comparing the experimental curves with numerical simulations of the non-linear diffusion equation for the magnetic field we are able to resolve the crossover between a dissipative regime governed by flux creep and one dominated by flux flow phenomena.

Vortex dynamics and pinning properties analysis of MgB2 bulk samples by ac susceptibility measurements

The flux lines dynamics have been investigated on MgB2 bulk superconductors obtained by reactive liquid infiltration by measuring the ac magnetic susceptibility. The fundamental and third harmonics have been studied as a function of temperature, dc magnetic field, ac field amplitude and frequency. In order to determine the dynamical regimes governing the vortex motion, the experimental results have been compared with susceptibility curves obtained by numerical calculations of the non-linear diffusion equation for the magnetic field. The frequency behaviour of the third harmonic response, that cannot be explained by frequency dependent critical state models, has been related to the current dependence of the flux creep activation energy U(J) in the diffusion coefficient. In this way we have shown that the measured curves are correctly interpreted within the framework of a vortex glass description.
