Tides across thin-shells: differences between spacetimes with one and two asymptotic regions

Traversability across thin shells is investigated, with special attention devoted to the difference in tides related with different global properties of the geometries. While we have recently associated curvature jumps across infinitely thin shells to troublesome tides and consequent very restrictive conditions for a safe travel across a throat satisfying the flare-out condition in spacetimes with two asymptotic regions, now we find that analogous problems can be significantly reduced or even cancelled across shells joining an inner with an outer submanifold of spacetimes with one asymptotic region. We also show that, within this framework, cylindrical shells present an advantage over spherical shells.

Further considerations about the traversability of thin-shell wormholes

Traversability in relation with tides in thin-shell wormholes is revisited to investigate the possibility of improving recently noted restrictive conditions for a safe travel across a wormhole throat. We consider wormholes mathematically constructed starting from background geometries which are solutions of scalar-tensor theories as dilaton gravity and Brans--Dicke gravity. The advantages of working within such frameworks are studied by examining the dependence of the extrinsic curvature and tides at the throat with the parameters determining the departure from pure relativity; the associated behaviour of tides in the smooth regions of the geometries is also analyzed. Other related but different approaches are briefly discussed in the appendices.

About the traversability of thin-shell wormholes

Traversability in relation with tides across thin-shell wormholes is analyzed. Conditions for a safe travel through a wormhole throat are established in terms of the parameters characterizing the geometries and reasonable assumptions regarding the travellers motion. Most convenient geometries turn to include the physically interesting example of wormholes connecting locally flat submanifolds as those associated to gauge cosmic strings. A certain relaxation of the conditions imposed and the corresponding extension of the set of admissible configurations is also briefly discussed.

Electrostatics and self-force in asymptotically flat cylindrical wormholes

The problem of the electrostatics in conical wormholes is revisited, now improving the background geometries with asymptotical flatness. The electric self-force on a point charge placed at different regions in the spacetime of a conical thin-shell wormhole connecting flat outer submanifolds is obtained and compared with the results of previous works. The study is also carried out in terms of a previously introduced analogy in which the effect of the matter shells on the electric field is reproduced by non-gravitating layers of charge located on the boundary surfaces. Besides, a better insight on the physical effects of a non trivial topology is obtained by means of a further analysis of the electric fluxes across the wormhole throat and at both spatial infinities. It is found that the throat is traversed by a non-arbitrary and finite topological flux, proportional to the charge of the source, which is characteristic of the asymptotically flat cylindrical wormholes regardless of the details of the throat geometry.

Arbitrarily coupled massive scalar field in conical thin-shell spacetimes

We study the massive scalar field of a charged particle held at rest in conical thin-shell spacetimes with one or two asymptotic regions. Resonant and stable scalar Green's functions are characterized in terms of the coupling of the field to the trace of the extrinsic curvature jump at the shell. Stable coupling values, within the safety domain of the configuration parameters, are used to analyze the self-force of static point charges.

Aspects of electrostatics in BTZ geometries

In the present paper the electrostatic of charges in non rotating BTZ black hole and wormhole space times is studied. In particular, the self force of a point charge in the geometry is characterized analitically. The differences between the self force in both cases is a theoretical experiment for distinguishing both geometries, which otherwise are locally indistinguishable. This idea was applied before to four and higher dimensional black holes by the present and other authors. However, the particularities of the BTZ geometry makes the analysis considerable more complicated than usual electrostatic in a flat geometry, and its even harder than its four dimensional counterparts. First, the BTZ space times are not asymptotically flat but instead asymptotically AdS. In addition, the relative distance $d(r,r+1)$ between two particles located at a radius $r$ and $r+1$ in the geometry tends to zero when $r\to\infty$. This behavior, which is radically different in a flat geometry, changes the analysis of the asymptotic conditions for the electrostatic field. In addition, there are no summation formulas that allow a closed analytic expression for the self force. We find a method to calculate such force in series, and the resulting expansion is convergent to the real solution. However, we suspect that the convergence is not uniform. In other, for points that are far away from the black hole the calculation of the force requires higher order summation. These subtleties are carefully analyzed in the paper, and it is shown that they lead to severe problems when calculating the self force for asymptotic points in the geometry.

Probing global aspects of a geometry by the self-force on a charge: Spherical thin-shell wormholes

The self-interaction for a static point charge in the space-time of a thin-shell wormhole constructed connecting two identical Schwarzschild geometries is calculated in a series expansion. The electrostatic self-force is evaluated numerically. It is found to be attractive towards the throat except for some values of the throat radius proximate to the value of the Schwarzschild horizon for which the force is repulsive or attractive depending on the position of the charge. The result differs from the self-force in the space-time of the Schwarzschild black hole, where it is always repulsive from the center. Although these wormhole and black hole geometries are locally indistinguishable, the different topologies of both backgrounds are manifested in the electrostatic field of a point charge.

Probing global aspects of a geometry by the self-force on a charge; cylindical thin-shell wormholes

We obtain the self-interaction for a point charge in the space-time of a cylindrical thin-shell wormhole connecting two identical locally flat geometries with a constant deficit angle. Although this wormhole geometry is locally indistinguishable from a cosmic string background, the corresponding self-forces are different even at the qualitative level. In fact in the cosmic string geometry the force is always repulsive while for the wormhole background we find that the force may point outwards or towards the wormhole throat depending on the parameters of the configuration. These results suggest that the study of the electromagnetic fields of charged particles is a useful tool for testing the global properties of a given background.

Adiabatic renormalization in theories with modified dispersion relations

We generalize the adiabatic renormalization to theories with dispersion relations modified at energies higher than a new scale $M_C$. We obtain explicit expressions for the mean value of the stress tensor in the adiabatic vacuum, up to the second adiabatic order. We show that for any dispersion relation the divergences can be absorbed into the bare gravitational constants of the theory. We also point out that, depending on the renormalization prescription, the renormalized stress tensor may contain finite trans-Planckian corrections even in the limit $M_C\to\infty$.

Renormalized Stress Tensor for trans-Planckian Cosmology

Finite expressions for the mean value of the stress tensor corresponding to a scalar field with a generalized dispersion relation in a Friedman--Robertson--Walker universe are obtained using adiabatic renormalization. Formally divergent integrals are evaluated by means of dimensional regularization. The renormalization procedure is shown to be equivalent to a redefinition of the cosmological constant and the Newton constant in the semiclassical Einstein equations.

The problem of time and gauge invariance in the quantization of cosmological models. II. Recent developments in the path integral approach

The paper is the second part of the work devoted to the problem of time in quantum cosmology. Here we consider in detail two approaches within the scope of Feynman path integration scheme: The first, by Simeone and collaborators, is gauge-invariant and lies within the unitary approach to a consistent quantization of gravity. It is essentially based on the idea of deparametrization (reduction to physical degrees of freedom) as a first step before quantization. The other approach by Savchenko, Shestakova and Vereshkov is rather radical. It is an attempt to take into account peculiarities of the Universe as a system without asymptotic states that leads to the conclusion that quantum geometrodynamics constructed for such a system is, in general, a gauge-noninvariant theory. However, this theory is shown to be mathematically consistent and the problem of time is solved in this theory in a natural way.

The problem of time and gauge invariance in the quantization of cosmological models. I. Canonical quantization methods

The paper is the first of two parts of a work reviewing some approaches to the problem of time in quantum cosmology, which were put forward last decade, and which demonstrated their relation to the problems of reparametrization and gauge invariance of quantum gravity. In the present part we remind basic features of quantum geometrodynamics and minisuperspace cosmological models, and discuss fundamental problems of the Wheeler - DeWitt theory. Various attempts to find a solution to the problem of time are considered in the framework of the canonical approach. Possible solutions to the problem are investigated making use of minisuperspace models, that is, systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom. At the same time, in the last section of the paper we expand our consideration beyond the minisuperspace approximation and briefly review promising ideas by Brown and Kuchar, who propose that dust interacting only gravitationally can be used for time measuring, and the unitary approach by Barvinsky and collaborators. The latter approach admits both the canonical and path integral formulations and anticipates the consideration of recent developments in the path integral approach in the second part of our work.
