Multiferroicity and spiral magnetism in FeVO$_4$ with quenched Fe orbital moments

FeVO$_4$ has been studied by heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, electric polarization and single crystal neutron diffraction experiments. The triclinic crystal structure is made of \emph{S}-shaped clusters of six Fe$^{3+}$ ions, linked by VO$_4^{3-}$ groups. Two long-range magnetic ordering transitions occur at T$_{N1}$=22K and T$_{N2}$=15K. Both magnetic structures are incommensurate. That stable below T$_{N1}$ is collinear with amplitude modulated moments whereas below T$_{N2}$ the arrangement is non-collinear with a helicoidal modulation. Below T$_{N2}$, \fevo becomes weakly ferroelectric coincidentally with the loss of the collinearity of the magnetic structure. We conclude that \fevo provides another example of frustrated spiral magnet similar to the classical TbMnO$_3$ compound. However, \fevo has quenched orbital moments and a particular structure clarifying the respective role of anisotropy and magnetic frustration in this type of multiferroic materials.

Intermediate range chemical ordering of cations in simple molten alkali halides

The presence of first sharp diffraction peaks in the partial structure factors is investigated in computer simulations of molten mixtures of alkali halides. An intermediate range ordering appears for the Li+ ions only, which is associated with clustering of this species and is not reflected in the arrangement of other ions. This ordering is surprising in view of the simplicity of the interionic interactions in alkali halides. The clustering reflects an incomplete mixing of the various species on a local length scale, which can be demonstrated by studying the complementary sub-space of cations in the corresponding pure alkali halides by means of a void analysis.

Interference of multi-mode photon echoes generated in spatially separated solid-state atomic ensembles

High-visibility interference of photon echoes generated in spatially separated solid-state atomic ensembles is demonstrated. The solid state ensembles were LiNbO$_3$ waveguides doped with Erbium ions absorbing at 1.53 $μ$m. Bright coherent states of light in several temporal modes (up to 3) are stored and retrieved from the optical memories using two-pulse photon echoes. The stored and retrieved optical pulses, when combined at a beam splitter, show almost perfect interference, which demonstrates both phase preserving storage and indistinguishability of photon echoes from separate optical memories. By measuring interference fringes for different storage times, we also show explicitly that the visibility is not limited by atomic decoherence. These results are relevant for novel quantum repeaters architectures with photon echo based multimode quantum memories.

Interference of Spontaneous Emission of Light from two Solid-State Atomic Ensembles

We report an interference experiment of spontaneous emission of light from two distant solid-state ensembles of atoms that are coherently excited by a short laser pulse. The ensembles are Erbium ions doped into two LiNbO3 crystals with channel waveguides, which are placed in the two arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The light that is spontaneously emitted after the excitation pulse shows first-order interference. By a strong collective enhancement of the emission, the atoms behave as ideal two-level quantum systems and no which-path information is left in the atomic ensembles after emission of a photon. This results in a high fringe visibility of 95%, which implies that the observed spontaneous emission is highly coherent.

Persistence of characteristics of an ordered flux line lattice above the second peak in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+ δ}$

We report Small Angle Neutron Scattering measurements of the flux lines lattice (FLL) in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+ δ}$. As previously reported, the scattered intensity decreases strongly when the magnetic field is increased, but it remains measurable far above the second peak. The direct observation of Bragg peaks proves that the characteristics of a lattice are still present. No structural features related to a symmetry breaking, such as a liquid like or an amorphous state, can be observed. However, the associated scattered intensity is very low and is difficult to explain. We discuss the coexistence between two FLL states as a possible interpretation.

Photon Echo Quantum Memory for Arbitrary Non-Stationary Light Fields

We develop the theory of an optical quantum memory protocol based on the three pulse photon echo (PE) in an optically dense medium with controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB). The wave-function of the retrieved photon echo field is derived explicitly as a function of an arbitrary input Data light field. The storage and retrieval of time-bin qubit states based on the described quantum memory is discussed, and it is shown that the memory allows to measure the path length difference in an imbalanced interferometer using short light pulses.

Resilience of multi-photon entanglement under losses

We analyze the resilience under photon loss of the bi-partite entanglement present in multi-photon states produced by parametric down-conversion. The quantification of the entanglement is made possible by a symmetry of the states that persists even under polarization-independent losses. We examine the approach of the states to the set of states with a positive partial transpose as losses increase, and calculate the relative entropy of entanglement. We find that some bi-partite distillable entanglement persists for arbitrarily high losses.

Quantum entanglement of a large number of photons

A bipartite multiphoton entangled state is created through stimulated parametric down-conversion of strong laser pulses in a nonlinear crystal. It is shown how detectors that do not resolve photon number can be used to analyze such multiphoton states. Entanglement of up to 12 photons is detected using both the positivity of the partially transposed density matrix and a newly derived criteria. Furthermore, evidence is provided for entanglement of up to 100 photons. The multi-particle quantum state is such that even in the case of an overall photon collection and detection efficiency as low as a few percent, entanglement remains and can be detected.
