Lie symmetries of generalized Burgers equations: application to boundary-value problems

There exist several approaches exploiting Lie symmetries in the reduction of boundary-value problems for partial differential equations modelling real-world phenomena to those problems for ordinary differential equations. Using an example of generalized Burgers equations appearing in nonlinear acoustics we show that that the "direct" procedure of solving boundary-value problems using Lie symmetries firstly described by Bluman is more general and straightforward than the method suggested by Moran and Gaggioli in [J. Eng. Math. 3 (1969), 151-162]. After the group classification of a class of generalized Burgers equations with time-dependent viscosity is performed we solve an associated boundary-value problem using the symmetries obtained.

Numerical solutions of boundary value problems for variable coefficient generalized KdV equations using Lie symmetries

The exhaustive group classification of a class of variable coefficient generalized KdV equations is presented, which completes and enhances results existing in the literature. Lie symmetries are used for solving an initial and boundary value problem for certain subclasses of the above class. Namely, the found Lie symmetries are applied in order to reduce the initial and boundary value problem for the generalized KdV equations (which are PDEs) to an initial value problem for nonlinear third-order ODEs. The latter problem is solved numerically using the finite difference method. Numerical solutions are computed and the vast parameter space is studied.

Enhanced group analysis and conservation laws of variable coefficient reaction-diffusion equations with power nonlinearities

A class of variable coefficient (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations of the general form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)u^nu_x)_x+h(x)u^m$ is investigated. Different kinds of equivalence groups are constructed including ones with transformations which are nonlocal with respect to arbitrary elements. For the class under consideration the complete group classification is performed with respect to convenient equivalence groups (generalized extended and conditional ones) and with respect to the set of all point transformations. Usage of different equivalences and coefficient gauges plays the major role for simple and clear formulation of the final results. The corresponding set of admissible transformations is described exhaustively. Then, using the most direct method, we classify local conservation laws. Some exact solutions are constructed by the classical Lie method.

Extended group analysis of variable coefficient reaction-diffusion equations with exponential nonlinearities

The group classification of a class of variable coefficient reaction-diffusion equations with exponential nonlinearities is carried out up to both the equivalence generated by the corresponding generalized equivalence group and the general point equivalence. The set of admissible transformations of this class is exhaustively described via finding the complete family of maximal normalized subclasses and associated conditional equivalence groups. Limit processes between variable coefficient reaction-diffusion equations with power nonlinearities and those with exponential nonlinearities are simultaneously studied with limit processes between objects related to these equations (including Lie symmetries, exact solutions and conservation laws).

On nonclassical symmetries of generalized Huxley equations

Nonclassical symmetries of a class of generalized Huxley equations of form $u_t=u_{xx}+k(x)u^2(1-u)$ are found. More precisely, for the class under consideration we completely classify reduction operators with $τ=1$ and give a wide number of examples of equations admitting reduction operators with $τ=0$.

Reduction operators of variable coefficient semilinear diffusion equations with an exponential source

Reduction operators (called also nonclassical or $Q$-conditional symmetries) of variable coefficient semilinear reaction-diffusion equations with exponential source $f(x)u_t=(g(x)u_x)_x+h(x)e^{mu}$ are investigated using the algorithm involving a mapping between classes of differential equations, which is generated by a family of point transformations. A special attention is paid for checking whether reduction operators are inequivalent to Lie symmetry operators. The derived reduction operators are applied to construction of exact solutions.

Group Analysis of Variable Coefficient Diffusion-Convection Equations. I. Enhanced Group Classification

We discuss the classical statement of group classification problem and some its extensions in the general case. After that, we carry out the complete extended group classification for a class of (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear diffusion--convection equations with coefficients depending on the space variable. At first, we construct the usual equivalence group and the extended one including transformations which are nonlocal with respect to arbitrary elements. The extended equivalence group has interesting structure since it contains a non-trivial subgroup of non-local gauge equivalence transformations. The complete group classification of the class under consideration is carried out with respect to the extended equivalence group and with respect to the set of all point transformations. Usage of extended equivalence and correct choice of gauges of arbitrary elements play the major role for simple and clear formulation of the final results. The set of admissible transformations of this class is preliminary investigated.

Conservation laws and hierarchies of potential symmetries for certain diffusion equations

We show that the so-called hidden potential symmetries considered in a recent paper [Gandarias M., Physica A, 2008, V.387, 2234-2242] are ordinary potential symmetries that can be obtained using the method introduced by Bluman and collaborators. In fact, these are simplest potential symmetries associated with potential systems which are constructed with single conservation laws having no constant characteristics. Furthermore we classify the conservation laws for classes of porous medium equations and then using the corresponding conserved (potential) systems we search for potential symmetries. This is the approach one needs to adopt in order to determine the complete list of potential symmetries. The provenance of potential symmetries is explained for the porous medium equations by using potential equivalence transformations. Point and potential equivalence transformations are also applied to deriving new results on potential symmetries and corresponding invariant solutions from known ones. In particular, in this way the potential systems, potential conservation laws and potential symmetries of linearizable equations from the classes of differential equations under consideration are exhaustively described. Infinite series of infinite-dimensional algebras of potential symmetries are constructed for such equations.

Enhanced Group Analysis and Exact Solutions of Variable Coefficient Semilinear Diffusion Equations with a Power Source

A new approach to group classification problems and more general investigations on transformational properties of classes of differential equations is proposed. It is based on mappings between classes of differential equations, generated by families of point transformations. A class of variable coefficient (1+1)-dimensional semilinear reaction-diffusion equations of the general form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)u_x)_x+h(x)u^m$ ($m\ne0,1$) is studied from the symmetry point of view in the framework of the approach proposed. The singular subclass of the equations with $m=2$ is singled out. The group classifications of the entire class, the singular subclass and their images are performed with respect to both the corresponding (generalized extended) equivalence groups and all point transformations. The set of admissible transformations of the imaged class is exhaustively described in the general case $m\ne2$. The procedure of classification of nonclassical symmetries, which involves mappings between classes of differential equations, is discussed. Wide families of new exact solutions are also constructed for equations from the classes under consideration by the classical method of Lie reductions and by generation of new solutions from known ones for other equations with point transformations of different kinds (such as additional equivalence transformations and mappings between classes of equations).

Group Analysis of Variable Coefficient Diffusion-Convection Equations. IV. Potential Symmetries

This paper completes investigation of symmetry properties of nonlinear variable coefficient diffusion-convection equations of the form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)A(u)u_x)_x+h(x)B(u)u_x$. Potential symmetries of equations from the considered class are found and the connection of them with Lie symmetries of diffusion-type equations is shown. Exact solutions of the Fujita--Storm equation $u_t=(u^{-2}u_x)_x$ are constructed.

Group Analysis of Variable Coefficient Diffusion-Convection Equations. II. Contractions and Exact Solutions

This is the second part of the series of papers on symmetry properties of a class of variable coefficient (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear diffusion-convection equations of general form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)A(u)u_x)_x+h(x)B(u)u_x$. At first, we review the results of Part 1 of the series on equivalence transformations and group classification of the class under consideration. Investigation of non-trivial limits of parameterized subclasses of equations from the given class, which generate contractions of the corresponding maximal Lie invariance algebras, leads to the natural notion of contractions of systems of differential equations. After a brief discussion on contractions of symmetries, equations and solutions in general case, such types of contractions are studied for diffusion--convection equations. A detailed symmetry analysis of an interesting equation from the class under consideration is performed. Exact solutions of some subclasses of the considered class are also given.

Group Analysis of Variable Coefficient Diffusion--Convection Equations. III. Conservation Laws

The notions of generating sets of conservation laws of systems of differential equations with respect to symmetry groups and equivalence groups are introduced and applied. This allows us to generalize essentially the procedure of finding potential symmetries for the systems with multidimensional spaces of conservation laws. A class of variable coefficient (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear diffusion-convection equations of general form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)A(u)u_x)_x+h(x)B(u)u_x$ is investigated. Using the most direct method, we carry out two classifications of local conservation laws up to equivalence relations generated by both usual and enhanced equivalence groups. Equivalence with respect to $\hat G^{\sim}$ and correct choice of gauge coefficients of equations play the major role for simple and clear formulation of the final results. The notion of contractions of conservation laws and one of characteristics of conservation laws are introduced and contractions of conservation laws of diffusion-convection equations are found.

Exact Solutions of a Remarkable Fin Equation

A model "remarkable" fin equation is singled out from a class of nonlinear (1+1)-dimensional fin equations. For this equation a number of exact solutions are constructed by means of using both classical Lie algorithm and different modern techniques (functional separation of variables, generalized conditional symmetries, hidden symmetries etc).

Group Analysis of Nonlinear Fin Equations

Group classification of a class of nonlinear fin equations is carried out exhaustively. Additional equivalence transformations and conditional equivalence groups are also found. They allow to simplify results of classification and further applications of them. The derived Lie symmetries are used to construct exact solutions of truly nonlinear equations for the class under consideration. Nonclassical symmetries of the fin equations are discussed. Adduced results amend and essentially generalize recent works on the subject [M. Pakdemirli and A.Z. Sahin, Appl. Math. Lett., 2006, V.19, 378-384; A.H. Bokhari, A.H. Kara and F.D. Zaman, Appl. Math. Lett., 2006, V.19, 1356-1340].

The Toda lattice is super-integrable

We prove that the classical, non-periodic Toda lattice is super-integrable. In other words, we show that it possesses 2N-1 independent constants of motion, where N is the number of degrees of freedom. The main ingredient of the proof is the use of some special action--angle coordinates introduced by Moser to solve the equations of motion.

Conservation Laws of Variable Coefficient Diffusion-Convection Equations

We study local conservation laws of variable coefficient diffusion-convection equations of the form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)A(u)u_x)_x+h(x)B(u)u_x$. The main tool of our investigation is the notion of equivalence of conservation laws with respect to the equivalence groups. That is why, for the class under consideration we first construct the usual equivalence group $G^{\sim}$ and the extended one $\hat G^{\sim}$ including transformations which are nonlocal with respect to arbitrary elements. The extended equivalence group $\hat G^{\sim}$ has interesting structure since it contains a non-trivial subgroup of gauge equivalence transformations. Then, using the most direct method, we carry out two classifications of local conservation laws up to equivalence relations generated by $G^{\sim}$ and $\hat G^{\sim}$, respectively. Equivalence with respect to $\hat G^{\sim}$ plays the major role for simple and clear formulation of the final results.
