Vertical distribution of Galactic disk stars: III. The Galactic disk surface mass density from red clump giants

We used red clump stars to measure the surface mass density of the Galactic disk in the solar neighbourhood. High resolution spectra of red clump stars towards the NGP have been obtained with the ELODIE spectrograph at OHP for Tycho-2 selected stars, and nearby Hipparcos counterparts were also observed. We determined their distances, velocities, and metallicities to measure the gravitational force law perpendicular to the Galactic plane. As in most previous studies, we applied one-parameter models of the vertical gravitational potential. We obtained a disk surface mass density within 1.1kpc of the Galactic plane, Sigma_{1.1kpc}=64+/-5 Msun_pc^{-2}, with an excellent formal accuracy, however we found that such one-parameter models can underestimate the real uncertainties. Applying two-parameter models, we derived more realistic estimates of the total surface mass density within 800pc from the Galactic plane, Sigma_{0.8kpc}=57-66 Msun pc^{-2}, and within 1.1kpc, Sigma{1.1kpc}=57-79 Msun pc^{-2}. This can be compared to literature estimates of \sim40 Msun pc^{-2} in stars and to 13 Msun pc^{-2} in the less accurately measured ISM contribution. We conclude that there is no evidence of large amounts of dark matter in the disk and, furthermore, that the dark matter halo is round or not vey much flattened. A by-product of this study is the determination of the half period of oscillation by the Sun through the Galactic plane, 42+/-2Myr, which cannot be related to the possible period of large terrestrial impact craters \sim 33-37Myr.

Abundance trends in kinematical groups of the Milky Way's disk

We have compiled a large catalogue of metallicities and abundance ratios from the literature in order to investigate abundance trends of several alpha and iron peak elements in the thin disk and the thick disk of the Galaxy. The catalogue includes 743 stars with abundances of Fe, O, Mg, Ca, Ti, Si, Na, Ni and Al in the metallicity range -1.30 < [Fe/H] < +0.50. We have checked that systematic differences between abundances measured in the different studies were lower than random errors before combining them. Accurate distances and proper motions from Hipparcos, and radial velocities from several sources have been retreived for 639 stars and their velocities (U,V,W) and galactic orbits have been computed. Ages of 322 stars have been estimated with the Bayesian method of isochrone fitting developped by Pont & Eyer (2004). Two samples kinematically representative of the thin and thick disks have been selected, taking into account the Hercules stream which is intermediate in kinematics, but with a probable dynamical origin. New release of the ELODIE library

We present ELODIE.3, an updated release of the ELODIE library originally published in Prugniel & Soubiran (2001). It is part of the spectrophotometric resources available in the HyperLeda database where the spectra can be visualized or downloaded in FITS format. The ELODIE library includes 1962 spectra of 1388 stars obtained with the ELODIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence 193cm telescope in the wavelength range 400 to 680 nm. It provides a large coverage of atmospheric parameters : Teff from 3000 K to 60000 K, log g from -0.3 to 5.9 and [Fe/H] from -3.2 to +1.4. The library is given at two resolutions: R=42000, with the flux normalized to the pseudo-continuum, R=10000 calibrated in physical flux (reduced above earth atmosphere) with a broad-band photometric precision of 2.5% and narrow-band precision of 0.5%. A grid of interpolated spectra is also given, which has been used for synthesis of stellar population with PEGASE-HR (Le Borgne et al. 2004). Compared to the previous version we have doubled the size of the library, corrected some identification errors, improved the external stellar parameters and the reduction procedure. A detailed description is available at the ELODIE.3 website : http://www.obs.u-bordeaux1.fr/m2a/soubiran/elodie_library.html

A new Bohm-Vitense gap in the temperature range 5560 to 5610K in the Main Sequence

Highly precise temperatures (sigma = 10-15 K) have been determined from line depth ratios for a set of 248 F-K field dwarfs of about solar metallicity (-0.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.4), based on high resolution (R=42000), high S/N echelle spectra. A new gap has been discovered in the distribution of stars on the Main Sequence in the temperature range 5560 to 5610 K. This gap coincides with a jump in the microturbulent velocity Vt and the well-known Li depression near 5600 K in field dwarfs and open clusters. As the principal cause of the observed discontinuities in stellar properties we propose the penetration of the convective zone into the inner layers of stars slightly less massive than the Sun and related to it, a change in the temperature gradient.

GAUDI: a preparatory archive for the COROT mission

The GAUDI database (Ground-based Asteroseismology Uniform Database Interface, http://sdc.laeff.esa.es/gaudi/) is a preparatory archive for the COROT (COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transits, http://www.astrsp-mrs.fr/projets/corot/) mission developed at LAEFF (Laboratory for Space Astrophysics and Theoretical Physics, http://www.laeff.esa.es). Its intention is to make the ground-based observations obtained in the preparation of the asteroseismology programme available in a simple and efficient way. It contains spectroscopic and photometric data together with inferred physical parameters for more than 1500 objects gathered since January 1998 in 6 years of observational campaigns. In this paper, the main functionalities and characteristics of the system are described. The observations have been collected at ESO-La Silla, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, Observatoire de Haute-Provence, South African Astronomical Observatory, Tautenberg Observatory and Sierra Nevada Observatory.

Spectroscopic survey of the Galaxy with Gaia I. Design and performance of the Radial Velocity Spectrometer

The definition and optimisation studies for the Gaia satellite spectrograph, the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS), converged in late 2002 with the adoption of the instrument baseline. This paper reviews the characteristics of the selected configuration and presents its expected performance. The RVS is a 2.0 by 1.6 degree integral field spectrograph, dispersing the light of all sources entering its field of view with a resolving power R=11 500 over the wavelength range [848, 874] nm. The RVS will continuously and repeatedly scan the sky during the 5 years of the Gaia mission. On average, each source will be observed 102 times over this period. The RVS will collect the spectra of about 100-150 million stars up to magnitude V~17-18. At the end of the mission, the RVS will provide radial velocities with precisions of ~2 km/s at V=15 and \~15-20 km/s at V=17, for a solar metallicity G5 dwarf. The RVS will also provide rotational velocities, with precisions (at the end of the mission) for late type stars of sigma_vsini ~5 km/s at V~15 as well as atmospheric parameters up to V~14-15. The individual abundances of elements such as Silicon and Magnesium, vital for the understanding of Galactic evolution, will be obtained up to V~12-13. Finally, the presence of the 862.0 nm Diffuse Interstellar Band (DIB) in the RVS wavelength range will make it possible to derive the three dimensional structure of the interstellar reddening.

The ELODIE archive

The ELODIE archive contains the complete collection of high-resolution echelle spectra accumulated over the last decade using the ELODIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence 1.93-m telescope. This article presents the different data products and the facilities available on the web to re-process these data on-the-fly. Users can retrieve the data in FITS format from http://atlas.obs-hp.fr/elodie and apply to them different functions: wavelength resampling and flux calibration in particular.

The distance to the Pleiades from orbital solution of the double-lined eclipsing binary HD 23642

Combining precise B,V photoelectric photometry and radial velocities, we have been able to derive a firm orbital solution and accurate physical parameters for the newly discovered eclipsing binary HD 23642 in the Pleiades open cluster. The resulting distance to the binary, and therefore to the cluster, is 132 +/- 2 pc. This closely confirms the distance modulus obtained by classical main sequence fitting methods (m-M = 5.60 or 132 pc), moving cluster techniques and the astrometric orbit of Atlas. This is the first time the distance to a member of the Pleiades is derived by orbital solution of a double-lined eclipsing binary, and it is intended to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the discordant Hipparcos distance to the cluster.

The Top Ten solar analogs in the ELODIE library

Several solar analogs have been identified in the library of high resolution stellar spectra taken with the echelle spectrograph ELODIE. A purely differential method has been used, based on the chi2 comparison of a large number of G dwarf spectra to 8 spectra of the Sun, taken on the Moon and Ceres. HD 146233 keeps its status of closest ever solar twin (Porto de Mello & da Silva 1997). Some other spectroscopic analogs have never been studied before, while the two planet-host stars HD095128 and HD186427 are also part of the selection. The fundamental parameters found in the literature for these stars show a surprising dispersion, partly due to the uncertainties which affect them. We discuss the advantages and drawbacks of photometric and spectroscopic methods to search for solar analogs and conclude that they have to be used jointly to find real solar twins.

On the correlation of elemental abundances with kinematics among galactic disk stars

We have performed the detailed analysis of 174 high-resolution spectra of FGK dwarfs obtained with the ELODIE echelle spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. Abundances of Fe, Si and Ni have been determined from equivalent widths under LTE approximation, whereas abundances of Mg have been determined under NLTE approximation using equivalent widths of 4 lines and profiles of 5 lines. Spatial velocities with an accuracy better than 1 km/s, as well as orbits, have been computed for all stars. They have been used to define 2 subsamples kinematically representative of the thin disk and the thick disk in order to highlight their respective properties. A transition occurs at [Fe/H]=-0.3. Stars more metal-rich than this value have a flat distribution with Zmax<1 kpc and sigma_W<20 km/s, and a narrow distribution of [alpha/Fe]. There exist stars in this metallicity regime which cannot belong to the thin disk because of their excentric orbits, neither to the thick disk because of their low scale height. Several thin disk stars are identified down to [Fe/H]=-0.80. Their Mg enrichment is lower than thick disk stars with the same metallicity. We confirm from a larger sample the results of Feltzing et al (2003) and Bensby et al (2003) showing a decrease of [alpha/Fe] with [Fe/H] in the thick disk interpreted as the signature of the SNIa which have progressively enriched the ISM with iron. However our data suggest that the star formation in the thick disk stopped when the enrichment was [Fe/H]=-0.30, [Mg/Fe]=+0.20, [Si/Fe]=+0.17. A vertical gradient in [alpha/Fe] may exist in the thick disk but should be confirmed with a larger sample. Finally we have identified 2 new candidates of the HR1614 moving group.

High precision effective temperatures for 181 F--K dwarfs from line-depth ratios

Line depth ratios measured on high resolution (R=42000), high S/N echelle spectra are used for the determination of precise effective temperatures of 181 F,G,K Main Sequence stars with about solar metallicity (-0.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.5). A set of 105 relations is obtained which rely Teff on ratios of the strengths of lines with high and low excitation potentials, calibrated against previously published precise (1%) temperature estimates. The application range of the calibrations is 4000--6150 K (F8V--K7V). The internal error of a single calibration is less than 100 K, while the combination of all calibrations for a spectrum of S/N=100 reduces uncertainty to only 5-10 K, and for S/N=200 or higher, to better than 5 K. The zero point of the temperature scale is directly defined from reflection spectra of the Sun with an uncertainty about 1 K. The application of this method to investigation of the planet host stars properties is discussed.

STELIB: a library of stellar spectra at R~2000

We present STELIB, a new spectroscopic stellar library, available at http://webast.ast.obs-mip.fr/stelib . STELIB consists of an homogeneous library of 249 stellar spectra in the visible range (3200 to 9500A), with an intermediate spectral resolution (~3A) and sampling (1A). This library includes stars of various spectral types and luminosity classes, spanning a relatively wide range in metallicity. The spectral resolution, wavelength and spectral type coverage of this library represents a substantial improvement over previous libraries used in population synthesis models. The overall absolute photometric uncertainty is 3%.

Vertical distribution of Galactic disk stars : II. The surface mass density in the Galactic plane

High resolution spectra data of red clump stars towards the NGP have been obtained with the high resolution spectrograph Elodie at OHP for Tycho-2 selected stars. Combined with Hipparcos local analogues, we determine both the gravitational force law perpendicaular to the Galactic plane, and the total surface mass density and thickness of the Galactic disk. The surface mass density of the Galactic disk within 800 pc derived from this analysis is Sigma(|z|<800pc)=76 Msol.pc-2 and, removing the dark halo contribution, the total disk mass density is Sigma0=67 Msol.pc-2 at solar radius. The thickness of the total disk mass distribution is dynamicaly measured for the first time and is found to be 390pc in relative agreement with the old stellar disk scale height. All dynamical evidences concerning the structure of the disk (its local volume density -i.e. the Oort limit-, its surface density and its thickness) are compatible with our knowledge of the corresponding stellar disk properties.

Vertical distribution of Galactic disk stars I - Kinematics and metallicity

Nearly 400 Tycho-2 stars have been observed in a 720 square degree field in the direction of the North Galactic Pole with the high resolution echelle spectrograph ELODIE. Absolute magnitudes, effective temperatures, gravities and metallicities have been estimated, as well as distances and 3D velocities. Most of these stars are clump giants and span typical distances from 200pc to 800pc to the galactic mid-plane. This new sample, free of any kinematical and metallicity bias, is used to investigate the vertical distribution of disk stars. The old thin disk and thick disk populations are deconvolved from the velocity-metallicity distribution of the sample and their parameters are determined. The thick disk is found to have a moderate rotational lag of -51+-5 km/s with respect to the Sun with velocity ellipsoid (sigma_U, sigma_V, sigma_W)=(63+-6, 39+-4, 39+-4) km/s, mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.48+-0.05 and a high local normalization of 15+-7%. Combining this NGP sample with a local sample of giant stars from the Hipparcos catalogue, the orientation of the velocity ellipsoid is investigated as a function of distance to the plane and metallicity. We find no vertex deviation for old stars, consistent with an axisymmetric Galaxy. Paper II is devoted to the dynamical analysis of the sample, puting new constraints on the vertical force perpendicular to the galactic plane and on the total mass density in the galactic plane.

Abundances of Cu and Zn in metal-poor stars: clues for Galaxy evolution

We present new observations of copper and zinc abundances in 90 metal-poor stars, belonging to the metallicity range -3< [Fe/H] < -0.5. The present study is based on high resolution spectroscopic measurements collected at the Haute Provence Observatoire (R= 42000, S/N > 100). The trend of Cu and Zn abundances as a function of the metallicity [Fe/H] is discussed and compared to that of other heavy elements beyond iron. We also estimate spatial velocities and galactic orbital parameters for our target stars in order to disentangle the population of disk stars from that of halo stars using kinematic criteria. In the absence of a firm a priori knowledge of the nucleosynthesis mechanisms controlling Cu and Zn production, and of the relative stellar sites, we derive constraints on these last from the trend of the observed ratios [Cu/Fe] and [Zn/Fe] throughout the history of the Galaxy, as well as from a few well established properties of basic nucleosynthesis processes in stars. We thus confirm that the production of Cu and Zn requires a number of different sources (neutron captures in massive stars, s-processing in low and intermediate mass stars, explosive nucleosynthesis in various supernova types). We also attempt a ranking of the relative roles played by different production mechanisms, and verify these hints through a simple estimate of the galactic enrichment in Cu and Zn. In agreement with suggestions presented earlier, we find evidence that Type Ia Supernovae must play a relevant role, especially for the production of Cu.

NGC 6994 - clearly not a physical stellar ensemble

The sparse stellar ensemble NGC 6994 = M73 has recently been discussed as a possible remnant of an old open cluster. In order to solve the controversy on the nature of this object we have taken high-resolution spectra of the six brightest stars within 6' angular distance of its nominal position. These stars are the only obvious member candidates for an eventual cluster or cluster remnant since fainter stars do not show any significant concentration in the plane of the sky. The radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, and absolute magnitudes derived from the spectra reveal that the six candidates do not share the same kinematics and lie at different distances from the Sun. The proper motions provided by the Tycho-2 catalogue show that there is also a large spread in the tangential motions of these stars, in agreement with the spectroscopic results. This leads to the conclusion that the few bright stars that constitute NGC 6994 are not a physical system (cluster, cluster remnant, or group). They must instead be understood as a projective chance alignment of physically unrelated field stars.

M2000 : an astrometric catalog in the Bordeaux Carte du Ciel zone +11 degrees < {delta} < +18 degrees

During four years, systematic observations have been conducted in drift scan mode with the Bordeaux automated meridian circle in the declination band [+11 ; +18]. The resulting astrometric catalog includes about 2 300 000 stars down to the magnitude limit V_M=16.3. Nearly all stars (96%) have been observed at least 6 times, the catalog being complete down to V_M=15.4. The median internal standard error in position is about 35 mas in the V_M magnitude range [11 ; 15], which degrades to about 50 mas when the faintest stars are considered. M2000 provides also one band photometry with a median internal standard error of 0.04 mag. Comparisons with the Hipparcos and bright part of Tycho-2 catalogs have enabled to estimate external errors in position to be lower than 40 mas. In this zone and at epoch 1998, the faint part of Tycho-2 is found to have an accuracy of 116 mas in alpha instead of 82 mas deduced from the model-based standard errors given in the catalog.

Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations for FGK stars : 2001 edition

The catalogue presented here is a compilation of published atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) obtained from high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopic observations. This new edition has changed compared to the five previous versions. It is now restricted to intermediate and low mass stars (F, G and K stars). It contains 6354 determinations of (Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) for 3356 stars, including 909 stars in 79 stellar systems. The literature is complete between January 1980 and December 2000 and includes 378 references. The catalogue is made up of two tables, one for field stars and one for stars in galactic associations, open and globular clusters and external galaxies. The catalogue is distributed through the CDS database. Access to the catalogue with cross-identification to other sets of data is also possible with VizieR (Ochsenbein et al. 2000).
