On soliton (in-)stability in multi-dimensional cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a focusing cubic term and a defocusing quintic nonlinearity in dimensions two and three. The core of this article is the notion of stability of solitary waves. We recall the two standard notions of orbital stability in the context of nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and show that they must be considered as independent from each other. We investigate numerically the notion of orbital stability of ground states in the radially symmetric case, confirming existing conjectures or leading to new ones.

On a class of derivative Nonlinear Schrödinger-type equations in two spatial dimensions

We present analytical results and numerical simulations for a class of nonlinear dispersive equations in two spatial dimensions. These equations are of (derivative) nonlinear Schrödinger type and have recently been obtained in \cite{DLS} in the context of nonlinear optics. In contrast to the usual nonlinear Schrödinger equation, this new model incorporates the additional effects of self-steepening and partial off-axis variations of the group velocity of the laser pulse. We prove global-in-time existence of the corresponding solution for various choices of parameters, extending earlier results of \cite{AAS}. In addition, we present a series of careful numerical simulations concerning the (in-)stability of stationary states and the possibility of finite-time blow-up.

Numerical study of fractional Nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Using a Fourier spectral method, we provide a detailed numerically investigation of dispersive Schrödinger type equations involving a fractional Laplacian. By an appropriate choice of the dispersive exponent, both mass and energy sub- and supercritical regimes can be computed in one spatial dimension, only. This allows us to study the possibility of finite time blow-up versus global existence, the nature of the blow-up, the stability and instability of nonlinear ground states, and the long time dynamics of solutions. The latter is also studied in a semiclassical setting. Moreover, we numerically construct ground state solutions to the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

WKB analysis of Bohmian dynamics

We consider a semi-classically scaled Schrödinger equation with WKB initial data. We prove that in the classical limit the corresponding Bohmian trajectories converge (locally in measure) to the classical trajectories before the appearance of the first caustic. In a second step we show that after caustic onset this convergence in general no longer holds. In addition, we provide numerical simulations of the Bohmian trajectories in the semiclassical regime which illustrate the above results.

Transverse stability of periodic traveling waves in Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations: A numerical study

We numerically investigate transverse stability and instability of so-called cnoidal waves, i.e., periodic traveling wave solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, under the time-evolution of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. In particular, we find that in KP-I small amplitude cnoidal waves are stable (at least for spatially localized perturbations) and only become unstable above a certain threshold. In contrast to that, KP-II is found to be stable for all amplitudes, or, equivalently, wave speeds. This is in accordance with recent analytical results for solitary waves given in \cite{RT1, RT2}.

Numerical study of oscillatory regimes in the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation

The aim of this paper is the accurate numerical study of the KP equation. In particular we are concerned with the small dispersion limit of this model, where no comprehensive analytical description exists so far. To this end we first study a similar highly oscillatory regime for asymptotically small solutions, which can be described via the Davey-Stewartson system. In a second step we investigate numerically the small dispersion limit of the KP model in the case of large amplitudes. Similarities and differences to the much better studied Korteweg-de Vries situation are discussed as well as the dependence of the limit on the additional transverse coordinate.

Semiclassical Asymptotics for the Maxwell - Dirac System

We study the coupled system of Maxwell and Dirac equations from a semiclassical point of view. A rigorous nonlinear WKB-analysis, locally in time, for solutions of (critical) order $O(\sqrtε)$ is performed, where the small semiclassical parameter $ε$ denotes the microscopic/macroscopic scale ratio.

On the Long Time Behavior of the Quantum Fokker-Planck equation

We analyze the long time behavior of transport equations for a class of dissipative quantum systems with Fokker-planck type scattering operator, subject to confining potentials of harmonic oscillator type. We establish the conditions under which there exists a thermal equilibrium state and prove exponential decay towards it, using (classical) entropy-methods. Additionally, we give precise dispersion estimates in the cases were no equilibrium state exists.
