Magnetic field of a linear octupole

We measure the magnetic field produced by a linear octupole formed by four magnets placed in such a way that both their magnetic moments and their quadrupole moments cancel each other. The magnetic field is measured with the magnetic sensor of a smartphone together with a suitable app, using the Android operating system. The main objective is to determine the dependence of the x-component of the magnetic field with distance and compare with the theoretical result that tells us that this dependence is a quintic decrease.

Pinning of spiral fluxons by giant screw dislocations in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystals: Josephson analog of the fishtail effect

By using a highly sensitive homemade AC magnetic susceptibility technique, the magnetic flux penetration has been measured in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystals with giant screw dislocations (having the structure of the Archimedean spirals) exhibiting a=3 spiral turnings, the pitch b=18.7 microns and the step height c=1.2nm (the last parameter is responsible for creation of extended weak-link structure around the giant defects). The magnetic field applied parallel to the surface enters winding around the weak-link regions of the screw in the form of the so-called spiral Josephson fluxons characterized by the temperature dependent pitch b_f(T). For a given temperature, a stabilization of the fluxon structure occurs when b_f(T) matches b (meaning an optimal pinning by the screw dislocations) and manifests itself as a pronounced low-field peak in the dependence of the susceptibility on magnetic field (applied normally to the surface) in the form resembling the high-field (Abrikosov) fishtail effect.

Unusually strong coherent response from grain-boundary Josephson network in polycrystalline Pr_{x}Y_{1-x}Ba_2Cu_3O_7

By applying a highly sensitive homemade AC susceptibility technique to Pr_{x}Y_{1-x}Ba_2Cu_3O_7 polycrystals (with x=0.0, 0.1 and 0.3), we observed very sharp Fraunhofer type low-field periodic oscillations of the real part of the AC susceptibility which were attributed to Josephson vortices penetrating intergranular regions of grain-boundary Josephson network in our samples. Assuming the Lorentz type distribution of single-junction contact areas, we were able to successfully fit the experimental data.

Manifestation of vortex depinning transition in nonlinear current-voltage characteristics of polycrystalline superconductor Y_{1-x}Pr_{x}Ba_2Cu_3O_7

We present our recent results on the temperature dependence of current-voltage characteristics for polycrystalline Y_{1-x}Pr_{x}Ba_2Cu_3O_7 superconductors with x = 0.0, 0.1 and 0.3. The experimental results are found to be reasonably well fitted for all samples by a power like law. According to the theoretical interpretation of the obtained results, nonlinear deviation of our current-voltage characteristics curves from Ohmic behavior below Tc is attributed to the manifestation of dissipation processes related to the current induced depinning of Abrikosov vortices.

Elastic properties of polycrystalline YBa_2Cu_3O_7: Evidence for granularity induced martensitic behavior

In this work we present the study of the elastic properties of polycrystalline samples of superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_7 prepared by the sol-gel method. The quality of all samples was checked by x-ray diffraction and scanning electronic microscopy while their physical properties were verified by transport and magnetic measurements. The elastic study was performed using the standard pulse-echo technique through measuring the phase velocity and the attenuation of ultrasonic waves (in the range of a few MHz) as a function of temperature. We have focused this study on the low temperatures interval (T < 200K). The obtained results show a strong hysteretic behavior in the ultrasonic attenuation (in addition to usually observed hysteretic behavior for the velocity) which strongly supports the existence of a martensitic-like phase above the superconducting critical temperature T_C. We argue that this peculiar behavior can be attributed to the granularity present in the samples.
