Direct observation of the near-surface layer in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ using neutron diffraction

Spatially resolved neutron diffraction as a function of crystal depth in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ reveals the presence of a distinct near-surface region. A dramatic change in both the lattice constant and the Bragg peak intensity as a function of crystal depth is observed to occur in this region over a length scale $\sim$ 100 $μ$m. This confirms a previous assertion, based on a comparison between high-energy x-rays and neutrons, that such a near surface region exists in the relaxors. Consequences to both single crystal and powder diffraction measurements and previous bulk neutron diffraction measurements on large single crystals are discussed.

Strong Influence of the diffuse component on the lattice dynamics in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$

The temperature and zone dependence of the lattice dynamics in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ is characterized using neutron inelastic scattering. A strong correlation between the diffuse and phonon scattering is measured. The lattice dynamics in Brillouin zones where the diffuse scattering is strong is observed to display qualitatively different behavior than those zones where the diffuse scattering is weak. In the (220) and (200) zones, where there is a weak diffuse component, the dynamics are well described by coupled harmonic oscillators. Compared with SrTiO$_{3}$, the coupling is weak and isotropic, resulting in only a small transfer of spectral weight from one mode to another. A comparison of the scattering in these zones to the (110) zone, where a strong diffuse component is present, reveals a strong coupling of the diffuse (or central) component to the acoustic mode. We speculate that the coupling to the central peak is the reason for several recent conflicting interpretations of the lattice dynamics based on data from zones with a strong diffuse component.

An Anomalous Phase in the Relaxor Ferroelectric Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$

X-ray diffraction studies on a Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PZN) single crystal sample show the presence of two different structures. An outer-layer exists in the outer most $\sim$ 10 to 50~$μ$m of the crystal, and undergoes a structural phase transition at the Curie temperature $T_C\approx410$ K. The inside phase is however, very different. The lattice inside the crystal maintains a cubic unit cell, while ferroelectric polarization develops below $T_C$. The lattice parameter of the cubic unit cell remains virtually a constant, i.e., much less variations compared to that of a typical relaxor ferroelectric, in a wide temperature range of 15 K to 750 K. On the other hand, broadening of Bragg peaks and change of Bragg profile line-shapes in both longitudinal and transverse directions at $T_C$ clearly indicate a structural phase transition occurring.

Dynamic Stripes and Resonance in the Superconducting and Normal Phases of YBa2Cu3O6.5 Ortho-II Superconductor

We describe the relation between spin fluctuations and superconductivity in a highly-ordered sample of YBaCu3O6.5 using both polarized and unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering. The spin susceptibility in the superconducting phase exhibits one-dimensional incommensurate modulations at low-energies, consistent with hydrodynamic stripes. With increasing energy the susceptibility curves upward to a commensurate, intense, well-defined and asymmetric resonance at 33 meV with a precipitous high-energy cutoff. In the normal phase, which we show is gapless, the resonance remains surprisingly strong and persists clearly in Q scans and energy scans. Its similar asymmetric spectral form above Tc=59 K suggests that incoherent superconducting pairing fluctuations are present in the normal state. On cooling, the resonance and the stripe modulations grow in well above Tc below a temperature that is comparable to the pseudogap temperature where suppression occurs in local and low-momentum properties. The spectral weight that accrues to the resonance is largely acquired by transfer from suppressed low-energy fluctuations. We find the resonance to be isotropically polarized, consistent with a triplet carrying ~2.6% of the total spectral weight of the Cu spins in the planes.

Universal Static and Dynamic Properties of the Structural Transition in Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3

The relaxors Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PZN) and Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) have very similar properties based on the dielectric response around the critical temperature $T_{c}$ (defined by the structural transition under the application of an electric field). It has been widely believed that these materials are quite different below $T_{c}$ with the unit cell of PMN remaining cubic while in PZN the low temperature unit cell is rhombohedral in shape. However, this has been clarified by recent high-energy x-ray studies which have shown that PZN is rhombohedral only in the skin while the shape of the unit cell in the bulk is nearly cubic. In this study we have performed both neutron elastic and inelastic scattering to show that the temperature dependence of both the diffuse and phonon scattering in PZN and PMN is very similar. Both compounds show a nearly identical recovery of the soft optic mode and a broadening of the acoustic mode below $T_{c}$. The diffuse scattering in PZN is suggestive of an onset at the high temperature Burns temperature similar to that in PMN. In contrast to PMN, we observe a broadening of the Bragg peaks in both the longitudinal and transverse directions below $T_{c}$. We reconcile this additional broadening, not observed in PMN, in terms of structural inhomogeneity in PZN. Based on the strong similarities between PMN and PZN, we suggest that both materials belong to the same universality class and discuss the relaxor transition in terms of the three-dimensional Heisenberg model with cubic anisotropy in a random field.

Ground State of Relaxor Ferroelectric $Pb(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$

High energy x-ray diffraction measurements on Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PZN) single crystals show that the system does not have a rhombohedral symmetry at room temperature as previously believed. The new phase (X) in the bulk of the crystal gives Bragg peaks similar to that of a nearly cubic lattice with a slight tetragonal distortion. The Bragg profile remains sharp with no evidence of size broadening due to the polar micro crystals (MC). However, in our preliminary studies of the skin, we have found the expected rhombohedral (R) phase as a surface state. On the other hand, studies on an electric-field poled PZN single crystal clearly indicate a rhombohedral phase at room temperature.

Top-Seeded Melt-Growth of YBa_2Cu_3O_x Crystals for Neutron Diffraction Studies

We have grown cubic centimetre-size crystals of YBa2Cu3Ox suitable for neutron studies, by a top-seeded melt-growth technique. Growth conditions were optimized with an eye toward maximizing phase purity. It was found that the addition of 2% Y2BaCuO5 and 0.5% Pt (by mass) were required to prevent melt loss and to obtain the highest crystallinity. A neutron diffraction study on a mosaic of six such crystals found that the final Y2BaCuO5 concentration was 5%, while other impurity phases comprised less than 1% by volume. The oxygen content was set to x=6.5, the crystals were detwinned and then carefully annealed to give the well-ordered ortho-II phase. The neutron study determined that 70% of the mosaic's volume was in the majority orthorhomic domain. The neutron (0,0,6) and (1,1,0) rocking curve widths were ~1 degree per crystal and \~2.2 degrees for the mosaic, and the oxygen chain correlation lengths were >100 A in the a- and b-directions and ~50 A in the c-direction.

Mode-coupling and polar nanoregions in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

We present a quantitative analysis of the phonon lineshapes obtained by neutron inelastic scattering methods in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN). Differences in the shapes and apparent positions of the transverse acoustic (TA) and transverse optic (TO) phonon peaks measured in the (300) and (200) Brillouin zones at 690 K are well described by a simple model that couples the TA and soft TO modes in which the primary parameter is the wave vector and temperature-dependent TO linewidth Gamma(q,T). This mode-coupling picture provides a natural explanation for the uniform displacements of the polar nanoregions, discovered by Hirota et al., as the PNR result from the condensation of a soft TO mode that also contains a large acoustic component.

Neutron scattering search for static magnetism in oxygen ordered YBa2Cu3O6.5

We present elastic and inelastic neutron scattering results on highly oxygen ordered YBa2Cu3O6.5 ortho-II. We find no evidence for the presence of ordered magnetic moments to a sensitivity of 0.003 Bohr magnetons, an order of magnitude smaller than has been suggested in theories of orbital or d-density-wave (DDW) currents. The absence of sharp elastic peaks, shows that the d-density-wave phase is not present, at least for the superconductor with the doping of 6.5 and the ordered ortho-II structure. We cannot exclude the possibility that a broad peak may exist with extremely short-range DDW correlations. For less ordered or more doped crystals it is possible that disorder may lead to static magnetism. We have also searched for the large normal state spin gap that is predicted to exist in an ordered DDW phase. Instead of a gap we find that the Q-correlated spin susceptibility persists to the lowest energies studied, 6 meV. Our results are compatible with the coexistence of superconductivity with orbital currents, but only if they are dynamic, and exclude a sharp phase transition to an ordered d-density-wave phase.

Ferroelectric Ordering in the Relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 as Evidenced by Low-Temperature Phonon Anomalies

Neutron scattering measurements of the lowest-energy TO phonons in the relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) are reported for 10<=T<=750 K. The soft mode, which is overdamped by the polar nanoregions below the Burns temperature T_d = 620 K, surprisingly recovers below 220 K. The square of the soft mode energy hw0^2 increases linearly with decreasing temperature, and is consistent with the behavior of a ferroelectric soft mode. At 10 K, hw0 reaches 11 meV, the same value observed in ferroelectric Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 at low-T. An unusual broadening of the TA phonon starts at T_d and disappears at 220 K, coincident with the recovery of the TO mode. These dynamics suggest that a well-developed ferroelectric state is established below 220 K.
