Cooperative Light Emission in the Presence of Strong Inhomogeneous Broadening

We study photon emission by an ensemble of two-level systems, with strong inhomogeneous broadening and coupled to a cavity mode whose frequency has linear time-dependence. The analysis shows that, regardless the distribution of energy level splittings, a sharp phase transition occurs between the weak and strong cooperative emission phases near a critical photonic frequency sweeping rate. The associated scaling exponent is determined. We suggest that this phase transition can be observed in an ensemble of negatively charged NV centers in diamond interacting with a microwave half-wavelength cavity mode even in the regime of weak coupling and at strong disorder of two-level splittings.

Time Projection Chamber (TPC) Detectors for Nuclear Astrophysics Studies With Gamma Beams

Gamma-Beams at the HIgS facility in the USA and anticipated at the ELI-NP facility, now constructed in Romania, present unique new opportunities to advance research in nuclear astrophysics; not the least of which is resolving open questions in oxygen formation during stellar helium burning via a precise measurement of the 12C(a,g) reaction. Time projection chamber (TPC) detectors operating with low pressure gas (as an active target) are ideally suited for such studies. We review the progress of the current research program and plans for the future at the HIγS facility with the optical readout TPC (O-TPC) and the development of an electronic readout TPC for the ELI-NP facility (ELITPC).

Unambiguous Identification of the Second 2+ State in 12C and the Structure of the Hoyle State

The second 2+ state of 12C, predicted over fifty years ago as an excitation of the Hoyle state, has been unambiguously identified using the 12C(g,a_0)8Be reaction. The alpha particles produced by the photodisintegration of 12C were detected using an Optical Time Projection Chamber (O-TPC). Data were collected at beam energies between 9.1 and 10.7 MeV using the intense nearly mono-energetic gamma-ray beams at the HIgS facility. The measured angular distributions determine the cross section and the E1-E2 relative phases as a function of energy leading to an unambiguous identification of the second 2+ state in 12C at 10.03(11) MeV, with a total width of 800(130) keV and a ground state gamma-decay width of 60(10) meV; B(E2: 2+ ---> gs) = 0.73(13) e2fm4 [or 0.45(8) W.u.]. The Hoyle state and its rotational 2+ state that are more extended than the ground state of 12C presents a challenge and constraints for models attempting to reveal the nature of three alpha particle states in 12C. Specifically it challenges the ab-initio Lattice Effective Field Theory (L-EFT) calculations that predict similar r.m.s. radii for the ground state and the Hoyle state.

Inside a kettle

This fluid dynamics video images the different heat transport mechanisms at play when a liquid confined in a vertical Hele-Shaw cell is heated from below. The two-dimensional time resolved temperature field inside the cell is measured by a quantitative Schlieren technique which is detailed in the video.

Anomalous magneto-optical Kerr hysteresis loops in Fe$_{0.25}$TaS$_{2}$

We have performed magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy measurements on intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Fe$_{0.25}$TaS$_{2}$ in the polar Kerr geometry as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and wavelength. The Kerr angle exhibits pronounced peaks at $\sim$775 nm (1.6 eV) and $\sim$515 nm (2.4 eV), which we attribute to spin-dependent interband optical transitions arising from states in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. Below the ferromagnetic transition temperature (165 K), we observe strongly wavelength- and magnetic-field-dependent Kerr signal. At a fixed wavelength, the magnetic-field dependence of the Kerr angle shows a clear hysteresis loop, but its shape sensitively changes with the wavelength. We propose a model that takes into account contributions from domain walls, which allowed us to derive a mathematical expression that successfully fits all the observed hysteresis loops.

Polarization dependence of coherent phonon generation and detection in highly-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes

We have investigated the polarization dependence of the generation and detection of radial breathing mode (RBM) coherent phonons (CP) in highly-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes. Using polarization-dependent pump-probe differential-transmission spectroscopy, we measured RBM CPs as a function of angle for two different geometries. In Type I geometry, the pump and probe polarizations were fixed, and the sample orientation was rotated, whereas, in Type II geometry, the probe polarization and sample orientation were fixed, and the pump polarization was rotated. In both geometries, we observed a very nearly complete quenching of the RBM CPs when the pump polarization was perpendicular to the nanotubes. For both Type I and II geometries, we have developed a microscopic theoretical model to simulate CP generation and detection as a function of polarization angle and found that the CP signal decreases as the angle goes from 0 degrees (parallel to the tube) to 90 degrees (perpendicular to the tube). We compare theory with experiment in detail for RBM CPs created by pumping at the E44 optical transition in an ensemble of single-walled carbon nanotubes with a diameter distribution centered around 3 nm, taking into account realistic band structure and imperfect nanotube alignment in the sample.

Above-Bandgap Magneto-optical Kerr Effect in Ferromagnetic GaMnAs

We have performed a systematic magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy study of GaMnAs with varying Mn densities as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and photon energy. Unlike previous studies, the magnetization easy axis was perpendicular to the sample surface, allowing us to take remanent polar Kerr spectra in the absence of an external magnetic field. The remanent Kerr angle strongly depended on the photon energy, exhibiting a large positive peak at $\sim1.7$ eV. This peak increased in intensity and blue-shifted with Mn doping and further blue-shifted with annealing. Using a 30-band ${\bf k\cdot p}$ model with antiferromagnetic $s,p$-$d$ exchange interaction, we calculated the dielectric tensor of GaMnAs in the interband transition region, assuming that our samples are in the metallic regime and the impurity band has merged with the valence band. We successfully reproduced the observed spectra without \emph{ad hoc} introduction of the optical transitions originated from impurity states in the band gap. These results lead us to conclude that above-bandgap magneto-optical Kerr rotation in ferromagnetic GaMnAs is predominantly determined by interband transitions between the conduction and valence bands.

On bubble clustering and energy spectra in pseudo-turbulence

3D-Particle Tracking (3D-PTV) and Phase Sensitive Constant Temperature Anemometry in pseudo-turbulence--i.e., flow solely driven by rising bubbles-- were performed to investigate bubble clustering and to obtain the mean bubble rise velocity, distributions of bubble velocities, and energy spectra at dilute gas concentrations ($α\leq2.2$%). To characterize the clustering the pair correlation function $G(r,θ)$ was calculated. The deformable bubbles with equivalent bubble diameter $d_b=4-5$ mm were found to cluster within a radial distance of a few bubble radii with a preferred vertical orientation. This vertical alignment was present at both small and large scales. For small distances also some horizontal clustering was found. The large number of data-points and the non intrusiveness of PTV allowed to obtain well-converged Probability Density Functions (PDFs) of the bubble velocity. The PDFs had a non-Gaussian form for all velocity components and intermittency effects could be observed. The energy spectrum of the liquid velocity fluctuations decayed with a power law of -3.2, different from the $\approx -5/3$ found for homogeneous isotropic turbulence, but close to the prediction -3 by \cite{lance} for pseudo-turbulence.

Femtosecond Demagnetization and Hot Hole Relaxation in Ferromagnetic GaMnAs

We have studied ultrafast photoinduced demagnetization in GaMnAs via two-color time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy. Below-bandgap midinfrared pump pulses strongly excite the valence band, while near-infrared probe pulses reveal sub-picosecond demagnetization that is followed by an ultrafast ($\sim$1 ps) partial recovery of the Kerr signal. Through comparison with InMnAs, we attribute the signal recovery to an ultrafast energy relaxation of holes. We propose that the dynamical polarization of holes through $p$-$d$ scattering is the source of the observed probe signal. These results support the physical picture of femtosecond demagnetization proposed earlier for InMnAs, identifying the critical roles of both energy and spin relaxation of hot holes.

Optical Metamaterials at Near and Mid IR Range Fabricated by Nanoimprint Lithography

Two types of optical metamaterials operating at near-IR and mid-IR frequencies, respectively, have been designed, fabricated by nanoimprint lithography (NIL), and characterized by laser spectroscopic ellipsometry. The structure for the near-IR range was a metal/dielectric/metal stack "fishnet" structure that demonstrated negative permittivity and permeability in the same frequency region and hence exhibited a negative refractive index at a wavelength near 1.7 um. In the mid-IR range, the metamaterial was an ordered array of four-fold symmetric L-shaped resonators (LSRs) that showed both a dipole plasmon resonance resulting in negative permittivity and a magnetic resonance with negative permeability near wavelengths of 3.7 um and 5.25 um, respectively. The optical properties of both metamaterials are in agreement with theoretical predictions. This work demonstrates the feasibility of designing various optical negative-index metamaterials and fabricating them using the nanoimprint lithography as a low-cost, high-throughput fabrication approach.

Ultrafast Quenching of Ferromagnetism in InMnAs Induced by Intense Laser Irradiation

Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy of ferromagnetic InMnAs reveals two distinct {\em demagnetization} processes -- fast ($<1$ ps) and slow ($\sim$100 ps). Both components diminish with increasing temperature and are absent above the Curie temperature. The fast component rapidly grows with pump power and saturates at high fluences ($>10$ mJ/cm$^2$); the saturation value indicates a {\em complete quenching} of ferromagnetism on a sub-picosecond time scale. We attribute this fast dynamics to spin heating through $p$-$d$ exchange interaction between photo-carriers and Mn ions while the $\sim$100 ps component is interpreted as spin-lattice relaxation.
