Incidence-based random walks on simplicial complexes

We introduce an incidence-based random walk on the edges of a random two-dimensional simplicial complex with a complete $1$-skeleton and independently retained triangular faces. The dynamics combine two transport channels, one mediated by vertices and the other by triangular faces, through an effective transition operator controlled by a mixing parameter $q$. This construction isolates the effects of higher-order connectivity without modifying the underlying pairwise support of the walk. We characterize the model through structural observables, spectral relaxation, stationary localization, and first-passage transport. Our results show that partial face retention generates heterogeneous higher-order connectivity, giving rise to a pronounced transport bottleneck at intermediate face densities. In this regime, the second-largest eigenvalue modulus, the inverse participation ratio of the stationary distribution, and the mean first-passage time all exhibit non-monotonic behavior, reaching their largest values at intermediate face densities. The corresponding first-passage-time distributions reveal an enhanced probability of unusually long trajectories. Together, these results establish a simple framework for investigating how heterogeneous higher-order connectivity reshapes spectral and transport properties beyond pairwise network dynamics.

On the distribution of topological and spectral indices on random graphs

We perform a detailed statistical study of the distribution of topological and spectral indices on random graphs $G=(V,E)$ in a wide range of connectivity regimes. First, we consider degree-based topological indices (TIs), and focus on two classes of them: $X_Σ(G) = \sum_{uv \in E} f(d_u,d_v)$ and $X_Π(G) = \prod_{uv \in E} g(d_u,d_v)$, where $uv$ denotes the edge of $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$, and $f(x,y)$ and $g(x,y)$ are functions of the vertex degrees. Specifically, we apply $X_Σ(G)$ and $X_Π(G)$ on Erdös-Rényi graphs and random geometric graphs along the full transition from almost isolated vertices to mostly connected graphs. While we verify that $P(X_Σ(G))$ converges to a standard normal distribution, we show that $P( X_Π(G))$ converges to a log-normal distribution. In addition we also analyze Revan-degree-based indices and spectral indices (those defined from the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the graph adjacency matrix). Indeed, for Revan-degree indices, we obtain results equivalent to those for standard degree-based TIs. Instead, for spectral indices, we report two distinct patterns: the distribution of indices defined only from eigenvalues approaches a normal distribution, while the distribution of those indices involving both eigenvalues and eigenvectors approaches a log-normal distribution.

Topological and spectral properties of random digraphs

We investigate some topological and spectral properties of Erdős-Rényi (ER) random digraphs $D(n,p)$. In terms of topological properties, our primary focus lies in analyzing the number of non-isolated vertices $V_x(D)$ as well as two vertex-degree-based topological indices: the Randić index $R(D)$ and sum-connectivity index $χ(D)$. First, by performing a scaling analysis we show that the average degree $\langle k \rangle$ serves as scaling parameter for the average values of $V_x(D)$, $R(D)$ and $χ(D)$. Then, we also state expressions relating the number of arcs, spectral radius, and closed walks of length 2 to $(n,p)$, the parameters of ER random digraphs. Concerning spectral properties, we compute six different graph energies on $D(n,p)$. We start by validating $\langle k \rangle$ as the scaling parameter of the graph energies. Additionally, we reformulate a set of bounds previously reported in the literature for these energies as a function $(n,p)$. Finally, we phenomenologically state relations between energies that allow us to extend previously known bounds.

Statistical properties of mutualistic-competitive random networks

Mutualistic networks are used to study the structure and processes inherent to mutualistic relationships. In this paper, we introduce a random matrix ensemble (RME) representing the adjacency matrices of mutualistic networks composed by two vertex sets of sizes $n$ and $m-n$. Our RME depends on three parameters: the network size $n$, the size of the smaller set $m$, and the connectivity between the two sets $α$, where $α$ is the ratio of current adjacent pairs over the total number of possible adjacent pairs between the sets. We focus on the the spectral, eigenvector and topological properties of the RME by computing, respectively, the ratio of consecutive eigenvalue spacings $r$, the Shannon entropy of the eigenvectors $S$, and the Randić index $R$. First, within a random matrix theory approach (i.e., a statistical approach), we identify a parameter $ξ\equivξ(n,m,α)$ that scales the average normalized measures $\left< \overline{X} \right>$ (with $X$ representing $r$, $S$ and $R$). Specifically, we show that (i) $ξ\propto αn$ with a weak dependence on $m$, and (ii) for $ξ<1/10$ most vertices in the mutualistic network are isolated, while for $ξ>10$ the network acquires the properties of a complete network, i.e., the transition from isolated vertices to a complete-like behavior occurs in the interval $1/10<ξ<10$. Then, we demonstrate that our statistical approach predicts reasonably well the properties of real-world mutualistic networks; that is, the universal curves $\left< \overline{X} \right>$ vs. $ξ$ show good correspondence with the properties of real-world networks.
