Oblique Surface Waves on a Pair of Planar Periodic Slotted Waveguides

The dispersion relation and mode amplitudes of oblique surface waves propagating on an acoustic double comb filter are obtained with a method based on the calculus of residues. We obtain a better agreement (below 480 Hz) between theoretical predictions and measurements reported previously when the filter was being supposed to be made of a single comb structure.

Strange Attractors in Multipath propagation: Detection and characterisation

Multipath propagation of radio waves in indoor/outdoor environments shows a highly irregular behavior as a function of time. Typical modeling of this phenomenon assumes the received signal is a stochastic process composed of the superposition of various altered replicas of the transmitted one, their amplitudes and phases being drawn from specific probability densities. We set out to explore the hypothesis of the presence of deterministic chaos in signals propagating inside various buildings at the University of Calgary. The correlation dimension versus embedding dimension saturates to a value between 3 and 4 for various antenna polarizations. The full Liapunov spectrum calculated contains two positive exponents and yields through the Kaplan-Yorke conjecture the same dimension obtained from the correlation sum. The presence of strange attractors in multipath propagation hints to better ways to predict the behaviour of the signal and better methods to counter the effects of interference. The use of Neural Networks in non linear prediction will be illustrated in an example and potential applications of same will be highlighted.

Information preserved guided scan pixel difference coding for medical images

This paper analyzes the information content of medical images, with 3-D MRI images as an example, in terms of information entropy. The results of the analysis justify the use of Pixel Difference Coding for preserving all information contained in the original pictures, lossless coding in other words. The experimental results also indicate that the compression ratio CR=2:1 can be achieved under the lossless constraints. A pratical implementation of Pixel Difference Coding which allows interactive retrieval of local ROI (Region of Interest), while maintaining the near low bound information entropy, is discussed.

Ray-Tracing studies in a perturbed atmosphere: I- The initial value problem

We report the development of a new ray-tracing simulation tool having the potential of the full characterization of a radio link through the accurate study of the propagation path of the signal from the transmitting to the receiving antennas across a perturbed atmosphere. The ray-tracing equations are solved, with controlled accuracy, in three dimensions (3D) and the propagation characteristics are obtained using various refractive index models. The launching of the rays, the atmospheric medium and its disturbances are characterized in 3D. The novelty in the approach stems from the use of special numerical techniques dealing with so called stiff differential equations without which no solution of the ray-tracing equations is possible. Starting with a given launching angle, the solution consists of the ray trajectory, the propagation time information at each point of the path, the beam spreading, the transmitted (resp. received) power taking account of the radiation pattern and orientation of the antennas and finally, the polarization state of the beam. Some previously known results are presented for comparative purposes and new results are presented as well as some of the capabilities of the software.

High-precision evaluation of the Vibrational spectra of long-range molecules

Vibrational spectra of long-range molecules are determined accurately and to arbitrary accuracy with the Canonical Function Method. The energy levels of the $0^-_g$ and $1_u$ electronic states of the $^{23}{\rm Na}_2$ molecule are determined from the Ground state up to the continuum limit. The method is validated by comparison with previous results obtained by Stwalley et al. using the same potential and Trost et al. whose work is based on the Lennard-Jones potential adapted to long-range molecules.

Parametric Potential Determination by the Canonical Function Method

The canonical function method (CFM) is a powerful means for solving the Radial Schrodinger Equation. The mathematical difficulty of the RSE lies in the fact it is a singular boundary value problem. The CFM turns it into a regular initial value problem and allows the full determination of the spectrum of the Schrodinger operator without calculating the eigenfunctions. Following the parametrisation suggested by Klapisch and Green, Sellin and Zachor we develop a CFM to optimise the potential parameters in order to reproduce the experimental Quantum Defect results for various Rydberg series of He, Ne and Ar as evaluated from Moore's data.

Comment on: Breakdown of Bohr's Correspondence Principle by: Bo Gao Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4225 (1999)

Gao applied LeRoy and Bernstein semi-classical analysis for the energy levels in a potential of the form -C/r^n to sequences of scaled energy differences progressing towards low lying states and found a better agreement with the semi-classical prediction. We checked that for the energy levels obtained by Stwalley et al. with the same potential, the agreement with the semi-classical approximation is better for higher vibrational quantum numbers in agreement with Bohr's correspondence principle.

Theoretical and Experimental Approach to Spin Dynamics in Thin Magnetic Films

The Landau-Lifshitz (L-L) equation describing the time dependence of the magnetisation vector is numerically integrated fully without any simplifying assumptions in the time domain and the magnetisation time series obtained is Fourier transformed (FFT) to yield the permeability spectrum up to 10 GHz. The non linear results are compared to the experimental results obtained on magnetic amorphous thin films of Co-Zr, Co-Zr-Re. We analyse our results with the frequency response obtained directly from the Landau-Lifshitz equation as well as with the second order Gilbert frequency response.

Combustion Models in Finance

Combustion reaction kinetics models are used for the description of a special class of bursty Financial Time Series. The small number of parameters they depend upon enable financial analysts to predict the time as well as the magnitude of the jump of the value of the portfolio. Several Financial Time Series are analysed within this framework and applications are given.
