Global analysis of charm mixing parameters and determination of the CKM angle $\gamma$

We present an updated global analysis of beauty decays sensitive to the angle $\gamma$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and of $D$-meson mixing data in the framework of approximate universality, in which CP violation in $D-\overline{D}$ mixing is described in terms of two universal weak phases corresponding to dispersive and absorptive contributions. We extract the fundamental theoretical parameters determining absorptive and dispersive contributions to $D$ meson mixing and CP violation, together with the angle $\gamma$. The results for the charm mixing parameters are $x_{12} \simeq x = (0.401 \pm 0.043)\%$ and $y_{12} \simeq y = (0.610 \pm 0.017)\%$, while the two CP-violating phases are given by $\phi_2^M = (0.13 \pm 0.70)^{\circ}$ and ${\phi}_2^{\Gamma} = (2.1 \pm 1.6)^{\circ}$. The angle $\gamma$ is found to be $\gamma = (65.7 \pm 2.5)^{\circ}$, in excellent agreement with the indirect determination from the Unitarity Triangle analysis.

Novel energy-preserving splitting integration for Hamiltonian Monte Carlo method

Splitting schemes are numerical integrators for Hamiltonian problems that may advantageously replace the Störmer-Verlet method within Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) methodology. However, HMC performance is very sensitive to the step size parameter; in this paper we propose a new method in the one-parameter family of second-order of splitting procedures that uses a well-fitting parameter that nullifies the expectation of the energy error for univariate and multivariate Gaussian distributions, taken as a problem-guide for more realistic situations; we also provide a new algorithm that through an adaptive choice of the $b$ parameter and the step-size ensures high sampling performance of HMC. For similar methods introduced in recent literature, by using the proposed step size selection, the splitting integration within HMC method never rejects a sample when applied to univariate and multivariate Gaussian distributions. For more general non Gaussian target distributions the proposed approach exceeds the principal especially when the adaptive choice is used. The effectiveness of the proposed is firstly tested on some benchmarks examples taken from literature. Then, we conduct experiments by considering as target distribution, the Log-Gaussian Cox process and Bayesian Logistic Regression.

Power corrections to the CP-violation parameter $\varepsilon_K$

We present the calculation of the short-distance power corrections to the CP-violation parameter $\varepsilon_K$ coming from dimension-8 operators in the $ΔS=2$ effective Hamiltonian. A first estimate of this contribution, obtained for large-$N_c$ and in the chiral limit, was provided in ref. [arXiv:hep-ph/0406094]. Here we evaluate and include the $\mathcal{O}(m_K^2/m_c^2)$ and $\mathcal{O}(Λ_{QCD}^2/m_c^2)$ contributions that, a priori, could induce $\mathcal{O}(1)$ corrections to previous estimates, as $m_K$ is numerically of order $Λ_{QCD}$. Our computation shows that there are several dimension-8 operators besides the one considered before. Their effect on $\varepsilon_K$, however, accidentally cancels out to a large extent, leaving the final correction at the level of 1%.

Quark masses using twisted mass fermion gauge ensembles

We present a calculation of the up, down, strange and charm quark masses performed within the lattice QCD framework. We use the twisted mass fermion action and carry out simulations that include in the sea two light mass-degenerate quarks, as well as the strange and charm quarks. In the analysis we use gauge ensembles simulated at three values of the lattice spacing and with light quarks that correspond to pion masses in the range from 350 MeV to the physical value, while the strange and charm quark masses are tuned approximately to their physical values. We use several quantities to set the scale in order to check for finite lattice spacing effects and in the continuum limit we get compatible results. The quark mass renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively using the RI'-MOM method converted into the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme. For the determination of the quark masses we use physical observables from both the meson and the baryon sectors, obtaining $m_{ud} = 3.636(66)(^{+60}_{-57})$~MeV and $m_s = 98.7(2.4)(^{+4.0}_{-3.2})$~MeV in the $\overline{\rm MS}(2\,{\rm GeV})$ scheme and $m_c = 1036(17)(^{+15}_{-8})$~MeV in the $\overline{\rm MS}(3\,{\rm GeV})$ scheme, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones are combinations of systematic errors. For the quark mass ratios we get $m_s / m_{ud} = 27.17(32)(^{+56}_{-38})$ and $m_c / m_s = 11.48(12)(^{+25}_{-19})$.

Determination of the light, strange and charm quark masses using twisted mass fermions

We present results for the light, strange and charm quark masses using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermion ensembles at three values of the lattice spacing, including two ensembles simulated with the physical value of the pion mass. The analysis is done both in the meson and baryon sectors. The difference in the mean values found in the two sectors is included as part of the systematic error. The presentation is based on the work of Ref. [1], where more details can be found.

Scalar and vector form factors of $D \to π(K) \ell ν$ decays with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted fermions

We present a lattice determination of the vector and scalar form factors of the $D \to π(K) \ell ν$ semileptonic decays, which are relevant for the extraction of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ from experimental data. Our analysis is based on the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2+1+1$ flavors of dynamical quarks, at three different values of the lattice spacing and with pion masses as small as 210 MeV. The matrix elements of both vector and scalar currents are determined for a plenty of kinematical conditions in which parent and child mesons are either moving or at rest. Lorentz symmetry breaking due to hypercubic effects is clearly observed in the data and included in the decomposition of the current matrix elements in terms of additional form factors. After the extrapolations to the physical pion mass and to the continuum limit we determine the vector and scalar form factors in the whole kinematical region from $q^2 = 0$ up to $q^2_{max} = (M_D - M_{π(K)})^2$ accessible in the experiments, obtaining a good overall agreement with experiments, except in the region at high values of $q^2$ where some deviations are visible. A set of synthetic data points, representing our results for $f_+^{D π(K)}(q^2)$ and $f_0^{D π(K)}(q^2)$ for several selected values of $q^2$, is provided and also the corresponding covariance matrix is available. At zero 4-momentum transfer we get: $f_+^{D \to π}(0) = 0.612 ~ (35)$ and $f_+^{D \to K}(0) = 0.765 ~ (31)$. Using the experimental averages for $|V_{cd}| f_+^{D \to π}(0)$ and $|V_{cs}| f_+^{D \to K}(0)$, we extract $|V_{cd}| = 0.2330 ~ (137)$ and $|V_{cs}| = 0.945 ~ (38)$, respectively. The second-row of the CKM matrix is found to be in agreement with unitarity within the current uncertainties: $|V_{cd}|^2 + |V_{cs}|^2 + |V_{cb}|^2 = 0.949 ~ (78)$.

Tensor form factor of $D \to π(K) \ell ν$ and $D \to π(K) \ell \ell$ decays with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted-mass fermions

We present the first lattice Nf=2+1+1 determination of the tensor form factor $f_T^{D π(K)}(q^2)$ corresponding to the semileptonic and rare $D \to π(K)$ decays as a function of the squared 4-momentum transfer $q^2$. Together with our recent determination of the vector and scalar form factors we complete the set of hadronic matrix elements regulating the semileptonic and rare $D \to π(K)$ transitions within and beyond the Standard Model, when a non-zero tensor coupling is possible. Our analysis is based on the gauge configurations produced by ETMC with Nf=2+1+1 flavors of dynamical quarks, which include in the sea, besides two light mass-degenerate quarks, also the strange and charm quarks with masses close to their physical values. We simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing and with pion masses as small as 220 MeV. The matrix elements of the tensor current are determined for plenty of kinematical conditions in which parent and child mesons are either moving or at rest. As in the case of the vector and scalar form factors, Lorentz symmetry breaking due to hypercubic effects is clearly observed also in the data for the tensor form factor and included in the decomposition of the current matrix elements in terms of additional form factors. After the extrapolations to the physical pion mass and to the continuum and infinite volume limits we determine the tensor form factor in the whole kinematical region accessible in the experiments. A set of synthetic data points, representing our results for $f_T^{D π(K)}(q^2)$ for several selected values of $q^2$, is provided and the corresponding covariance matrix is also available. At zero four-momentum transfer we get $f_T^{D π}(0) = 0.506 (79)$ and $f_T^{D K}(0) = 0.687 (54)$, which correspond to $f_T^{D π}(0)/f_+^{D π}(0) = 0.827 (114)$ and $f_T^{D K}(0)/f_+^{D K}(0)= 0.898 (50)$.

First lattice calculation of the QED corrections to leptonic decay rates

The leading-order electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections to the ratio of $K_{μ2}$ and $π_{μ2}$ decay rates are evaluated for the first time on the lattice, following a method recently proposed. The lattice results are obtained using the gauge ensembles produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ dynamical quarks. Systematics effects are evaluated and the impact of the quenched QED approximation is estimated. Our result for the correction to the tree-level $K_{μ2} / π_{μ2}$ decay ratio is $-1.22\,(16) \%$ to be compared to the estimate $-1.12\,(21) \%$ based on Chiral Perturbation Theory and adopted by the Particle Data Group.

Leading isospin-breaking corrections to meson masses on the lattice

We present a study of the isospin-breaking (IB) corrections to pseudoscalar (PS) meson masses using the gauge configurations produced by the ETM Collaboration with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three lattice spacings varying from 0.089 to 0.062 fm. Our method is based on a combined expansion of the path integral in powers of the small parameters $(\widehat{m}_d - \widehat{m}_u)/Λ_{QCD}$ and $α_{em}$, where $\widehat{m}_f$ is the renormalized quark mass and $α_{em}$ the renormalized fine structure constant. We obtain results for the pion, kaon and $D$-meson mass splitting; for the Dashen's theorem violation parameters $ε_γ(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$, $ε_{π^0}$, $ε_{K^0}(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$; for the light quark masses $(\widehat{m}_d - \widehat{m}_u)(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$, $(\widehat{m}_u / \widehat{m}_d)(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$; for the flavour symmetry breaking parameters $R(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$ and $Q(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$ and for the strong IB effects on the kaon decay constants.

Leading isospin-breaking corrections to pion, kaon and charmed-meson masses with Twisted-Mass fermions

We present a lattice computation of the isospin-breaking corrections to pseudoscalar meson masses using the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.062, 0.082$ and $0.089$ fm) with pion masses in the range $M_π\simeq 210 - 450$ MeV. The strange and charm quark masses are tuned at their physical values. We adopt the RM123 method based on the combined expansion of the path integral in powers of the $d$- and $u$-quark mass difference ($\widehat{m}_d - \widehat{m}_u$) and of the electromagnetic coupling $α_{em}$. Within the quenched QED approximation, which neglects the effects of the sea-quark charges, and after the extrapolations to the physical pion mass and to the continuum and infinite volume limits, we provide results for the pion, kaon and (for the first time) charmed-meson mass splittings, for the prescription-dependent parameters $ε_{π^0}$, $ε_γ(\overline{MS}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$, $ε_{K^0}(\overline{MS}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$, related to the violations of the Dashen's theorem, and for the light quark mass difference $(\widehat{m}_d - \widehat{m}_u)(\overline{MS}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$.

Hypercubic Effects in semileptonic $D \to π$ decays on the lattice

We present a lattice determination of the vector and scalar form factors of the semileptonic $D \to π\ell ν$ decays, which are relevant for the extraction of the CKM matrix element $\lvert V_{cd} \rvert$ from experimental data. Our analysis is based on the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ flavors of dynamical quarks. We simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing and with pion masses as small as 210 MeV. Quark momenta are injected on the lattice using non-periodic boundary conditions. Our preliminary estimate for the vector form factor at zero 4-momentum transfer is $f_+^{D \to π}(0) = 0.631\,(40)$, which can be compared with the latest FLAG average $f_+^{D \to π}(0) = 0.666\,(29)$ available only at $N_f = 2 + 1$.

Electromagnetic corrections to the leptonic decay rates of charged pseudoscalar mesons: lattice results

Electromagnetic effects in the leptonic decay rates $π^+ \to μ^+ ν$ and $K^+ \to μ^+ ν$ are evaluated for the first time on the lattice. Following a method recently proposed in Ref. [1] the emission of virtual photons at leading order in the electromagnetic coupling is evaluated on the lattice and the infrared divergence computed for a point-like meson at finite lattice volume is subtracted. The physical decay rate is then obtained by adding the emission of real and virtual photons regularised with a photon mass. Using the gauge ensembles produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ dynamical quarks the feasibility of our approach is demonstrated. Preliminary results for the electromagnetic corrections to charged (neutral) pion and kaon masses as well as to the leptonic decay rates of charged pions and kaons are presented.

Mass of the b-quark and B-decay constants from Nf=2+1+1 twisted-mass Lattice QCD

We present precise lattice computations for the b-quark mass, the quark mass ratios mb/mc and mb/ms as well as the leptonic B-decay constants. We employ gauge configurations with four dynamical quark flavors, up/down, strange and charm, at three values of the lattice spacing (a ~ 0.06 - 0.09 fm) and for pion masses as low as 210 MeV. Interpolation in the heavy quark mass to the bottom quark point is performed using ratios of physical quantities computed at nearby quark masses exploiting the fact that these ratios are exactly known in the static quark mass limit. Our results are also extrapolated to the physical pion mass and to the continuum limit and read: mb(MSbar, mb) = 4.26(10) GeV, mb/mc = 4.42(8), mb/ms = 51.4(1.4), fBs = 229(5) MeV, fB = 193(6) MeV, fBs/fB = 1.184(25) and (fBs/fB)/(fK/fpi) = 0.997(17).

$K \to π$ semileptonic form factors with $N_f=2+1+1$ Twisted Mass fermions

We present a lattice QCD determination of the vector and scalar form factors of the semileptonic $K \to π\ell ν$ decay which are relevant for the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{us}|$ from experimental data. Our results are based on the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical fermions, which include in the sea, besides two light mass degenerate quarks, also the strange and the charm quarks. We use data simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing and with pion masses as small as $210$ MeV. Our final result for the vector form factor at zero momentum transfer is $f_+(0) = 0.9709 (46)$, where the uncertainty is both statistical and systematic combined in quadrature. Using the latest experimental value of $f_+(0) |V_{us}|$ from $K_{\ell 3}$ decays, we obtain $|V_{us}| = 0.2230 (11)$, which allows to test the unitarity constraint of the Standard Model below the permille level once the determination of $|V_{ud}|$ from superallowed nuclear $β$ decays is adopted. A slight tension with unitarity at the level of $\sim 2$ standard deviations is observed. Moreover we present our results for the semileptonic scalar $f_0(q^2)$ and vector $f_+(q^2)$ form factors in the whole range of values of the squared four-momentum transfer $q^2$ measured in $K_{\ell 3}$ decays, obtaining a very good agreement with the momentum dependence of the experimental data. We provide a set of synthetic data points representing our results for the vector and scalar form factors at the physical point for several selected values of $q^2$.

D -> πl νand D -> K l νform factors with Nf=2+1+1 Twisted fermions

We present a lattice QCD determination of the vector and scalar form factors of the semileptonic decays D->πl νand D -> K l νwhich are relevant for the extraction of the CKM matrix elements |Vcd| and |Vcs| from experimental data. Our analysis is based on the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with Nf = 2+1+1 dynamical fermions. We simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing and with pion masses as small as 210 MeV. Our preliminary estimates for the vector form factor at zero 4-momentum transfer are f+(D -> π)(0) = 0.610 (23) and f+(D -> K)(0) = 0.747 (22), where the uncertainties are only statistical. By combining our results with the experimental values of f+(D -> π)(0) |Vcd| and f+(D -> K)(0) |Vcs| we obtain |Vcd| = 0.2336 (93) and |Vcs| = 0.975 (30), which together with the PDG determination of |Vcb| are in agreement with the unitarity constraint of the Standard Model.

ΔS=2 and ΔC=2 bag parameters in the SM and beyond from Nf=2+1+1 twisted-mass LQCD

We present unquenched lattice QCD results for the matrix elements of four-fermion operators relevant to the description of the neutral K and D mixing in the Standard Model and its extensions. We have employed simulations with Nf = 2 + 1 + 1 dynamical sea quarks at three values of the lattice spacings in the interval 0.06 - 0.09 fm and pseudoscalar meson masses in the range 210 - 450 MeV. Our results are extrapolated to the continuum limit and to the physical pion mass. Renormalization constants have been determined non-perturbatively in the RI-MOM scheme. In particular, for the Kaon bag-parameter, which is relevant for the \overline{K}^0-K^0 mixing in the Standard Model, we obtain B_K^{RGI} = 0.717(24).

Leptonic decay constants fK, fD and fDs with Nf = 2+1+1 twisted-mass lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the pseudoscalar decay constants fK, fD and fDs performed using the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with Nf = 2 + 1 + 1 dynamical quarks, which include in the sea, besides two light mass degenerate quarks, also the strange and charm quarks with masses close to their values in the real world. The simulations are based on a unitary setup for the two light mass-degenerate quarks and on a mixed action approach for the strange and charm quarks. We use data simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing in the range 0.06 - 0.09 fm and at pion masses in the range 210 - 450 MeV. Our main results are: fK+ / fpi+ = 1.184 (16), fK+ = 154.4 (2.0) MeV, which incorporate the leading strong isospin breaking correction due to the up- and down-quark mass difference, and fK = 155.0 (1.9) MeV, fD = 207.4 (3.8) MeV, fDs = 247.2 (4.1) MeV, fDs / fD = 1.192 (22) and (fDs / fD) / (fK / fpi) = 1.003 (14) obtained in the isospin symmetric limit of QCD. Combined with the experimental measurements of the leptonic decay rates of kaon, pion, D- and Ds-mesons our results lead to the following determination of the CKM matrix elements: |Vus| = 0.2269 (29), |Vcd| = 0.2221 (67) and |Vcs| = 1.014 (24). Using the latest value of |Vud| from superallowed nuclear beta decays the unitarity of the first row of the CKM matrix is fulfilled at the permille level.

QED Corrections to Hadronic Processes in Lattice QCD

In this paper, for the first time a method is proposed to compute electromagnetic effects in hadronic processes using lattice simulations. The method can be applied, for example, to the leptonic and semileptonic decays of light or heavy pseudoscalar mesons. For these quantities the presence of infrared divergences in intermediate stages of the calculation makes the procedure much more complicated than is the case for the hadronic spectrum, for which calculations already exist. In order to compute the physical widths, diagrams with virtual photons must be combined with those corresponding to the emission of real photons. Only in this way do the infrared divergences cancel as first understood by Bloch and Nordsieck in 1937. We present a detailed analysis of the method for the leptonic decays of a pseudoscalar meson. The implementation of our method, although challenging, is within reach of the present lattice technology.
