Pauli blockade of the electron spin flip in bulk GaAs

By means of time-resolved optical orientation under strong optical pumping, the k-dependence of the electron spin-flip time (t_sf) in undoped GaAs is experimentally determined. t_sf monotonically decreases by more than one order of magnitude when the electron kinetic energy varies from 2 to 30 meV. At the high excitation densities and low temperatures of the reported experiments the main spin-flip mechanism of the conduction band electrons is the Bir-Aronov-Pikus. By means of Monte-Carlo simulations we evidence that phase-space filling effects result in the blocking of the spin flip, yielding an increase of t_sf with excitation density. These effects obtain values of t_sf up to 30 ns at k=0, the longest reported spin-relaxation time in undoped GaAs in the absence of a magnetic field.

Quantum-tomography of entangled photon pairs by quantum-dot cascade decay

We compute the concurrence of the polarization-entangled photon pairs generated by the biexciton cascade decay of a semiconductor quantum dot. We show how a cavity-induced increase of the photon rate emission reduces the detrimental effect of the dot dephasing and of the excitonic fine structure. However, strong dot-cavity couplings and finite detection efficiencies are shown to reduce the relevance of the desired cascade decay with respect to that of competing processes. This affects the merits of the entangled photon-pair source, beyond what estimated by the quantum-tomography.

All-optical non-demolition measurement of single-hole spin in a quantum-dot molecule

We propose an all-optical scheme to perform a non-demolition measurement of a single hole spin localized in a quantum-dot molecule. The latter is embedded in a microcavity and driven by two lasers. This allows to induce Raman transitions which entangle the spin state with the polarization of the emitted photons. We find that the measurement can be completed with high fidelity on a timescale of 100 ps, shorter than the typical T2. Furthermore, we show that the scheme can be used to induce and observe spin oscillations without the need of time-dependent magnetic fields.

Correlated photon-pair emission from pumped-pulsed quantum dots embedded in a microcavity

We theoretically investigate the optical response of a quantum dot, embedded in a microcavity and incoherently excited by pulsed pumping. The exciton and biexciton transition are off-resonantly coupled with the left- and right-polarized mode of the cavity, while the two-photon resonance condition is fulfilled. Rich behaviours are shown to occur in the time dependence of the second-order correlation functions which refer to counter-polarized photons. The corresponding time-averaged quantities, which are accessible to experiments, confirm that such a dot-cavity system behaves as a good emitter of single, polarization-correlated photon pairs.

Optimizing photon indistinguishability in the emission from incoherently-excited semiconductor quantum dots

Most optical quantum devices require deterministic single-photon emitters. Schemes so far demonstrated in the solid state imply an energy relaxation which tends to spoil the coherent nature of the time evolution, and with it the photon indistinguishability. We focus our theoretical investigation on semiconductor quantum dots embedded in microcavities. Simple and general relations are identified between the photon indistinguishability and the collection efficiency. The identification of the key parameters and of their interplay provides clear indications for the device optimization.

Polarization entanglement visibility of photon pairs emitted by a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity

We study the photon emission from a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. Incoherent pumping of its excitons and biexciton provokes the emission of leaky and cavity modes. By solving a master equation we obtain the correlation functions required to compute the spectrum and the relative efficiency among the emission of pairs and single photons. A quantum regime appears for low pumping and large rate of emission. By means of a post-selection process, a two beams experiment with different linear polarizations could be performed producing a large polarization entanglement visibility precisely in the quantum regime.

Spin depolarization in the transport of holes across GaMnAs/GaAlAs/p-GaAs

We study the spin polarization of tunneling holes injected from ferromagnetic GaMnAs into a p-doped semiconductor through a tunneling barrier. We obtain an upper limit to the spin injection rate. We find that spin-orbit interaction interaction in the barrier and in the drain limits severely spin injection. Spin depolarization is stronger when the magnetization is parallel to the current than when is perpendicular to it.

Tunnel Magneto-resistance in GaMnAs: going beyond Jullière formula

The relation between tunnel magneto-resistance (TMR) and spin polarization is explored for GaMnAs/GaAlAs/GaMnAs structures where the carriers experience strong spin-orbit interactions. TMR is calculated using Landauer approach. The materials are described in the 6 band $\bf {k}\cdot \bf{p}$ model which includes spin orbit interaction. Ferromagnetism is described in the virtual crystal mean field approximations. Our results indicate that TMR is a function of of spin polarization and barrier thickness. As a result of the stong spin orbit interactions, TMR also depends on the the angle between current flow direction and the electrode magnetization. These results compromise the validity of Julliere formula.

Dynamics of the excitations of a quantum dot in a microcavity

We study the dynamics of a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional microcavity in the strong coupling regime in which the quantum dot exciton has an energy close to the frequency of a confined cavity mode. Under the continuous pumping of the system, confined electron and hole can recombine either by spontaneous emission through a leaky mode or by stimulated emission of a cavity mode that can escape from the cavity. The numerical integration of a master equation including all these effects gives the dynamics of the density matrix. By using the quantum regression theorem, we compute the first and second order coherence functions required to calculate the photon statistics and the spectrum of the emitted light. Our main result is the determination of a range of parameters in which a state of cavity modes with poissonian or sub-poissonian (non-classical) statistics can be built up within the microcavity. Depending on the relative values of pumping and rate of stimulated emission, either one or two peaks close to the excitation energy of the dot and/or to the natural frequency of the cavity are observed in the emission spectrum. The physics behind these results is discussed.

Fermionic Atoms in Optical Superlattices

Fermionic atoms in an optical superlattice can realize a very peculiar Anderson lattice model in which impurities interact with each other through a discretized set of delocalized levels. We investigate the interplay between Kondo effect and magnetism under these finite-size features. We find that Kondo effect can dominate over magnetism depending on the parity of the number of particles per discretized set. We show how Kondo-induced resonances of measurable size can be observed through the atomic interference pattern.

Linewidth of a polariton laser: Theoretical analysis of self-interaction effects

Polaritons in semiconductor microcavities can experience a Bose-Einstein condensation experimentally detectable in the spectrum of the emitted light. Scattering with noncondensed particles as well as self-interaction in the condensate provoke phase-diffusion limiting the coherence of the polariton condensate. We present a theoretical analysis of self-interaction effects on the lineshape of the emission from a polariton laser. Our calculations, for CdTe microcavities, show that there is an optimum pump at which the linewidth of the emitted light is reduced down to 1 $μ$ eV.

Spins, charges and currents at Domain Walls in a Quantum Hall Ising Ferromagnet

We study spin textures in a quantum Hall Ising ferromagnet. Domain walls between ferro and unpolarized states at $ν=2$ are analyzed with a functional theory supported by a microscopic calculation. In a neutral wall, Hartree repulsion prevents the appearance of a fan phase provoked by a negative stiffness. For a charged system, electrons become trapped as solitons at the domain wall. The size and energy of the solitons are determined by both Hartree and spin-orbit interactions. Finally, we discuss how electrical transport takes place through the domain wall.

Polariton dynamics and Bose-Einstein condensation in semiconductor microcavities

We present a theoretical model that allows us to describe the polariton dynamics in a semiconductor microcavity at large densities, for the case of non-resonant excitation. Exciton-polariton scattering from a thermalized exciton reservoir is identified as the main mechanism for relaxation into the lower polariton states. A maximum in the polariton distribution that shifts towards lower energies with increasing pump-power or temperature is shown, in agreement with recent experiments. Above a critical pump-power, macroscopic occupancies (5 \times 10^4) can be achieved in the lowest energy polariton state. Our model predicts the possibility of Bose-Einstein Condensation of polaritons, driven by exciton-polariton interaction, at densities well below the saturation density for CdTe microcavities.

Chessboard magnetoconductance of a quantum dot in the Kondo regime

Transport through a quantum dot (QD) in the Kondo regime shows alternating regions of high and low conductance when both an external magnetic field and the gate potential controlling the depth of the QD potential are varied. We present a theoretical analysis of this chessboard aspect of the magneto-conductance. An effective Kondo Hamiltonian is obtained by means of a restriction to the Hilbert space supported by just a few low energy states of N and N(+/-)1 electrons in the QD. We obtain antiferromagnetic exchange couplings depending on tunneling amplitudes and correlation effects. When either the magnetic field or the number of electrons in the QD is varied, Kondo temperature shows large oscillations due to the successive appearance of ground states having strong and weak correlation effects alternatively.

Restrictions on the coherence of the ultrafast optical emission from an electron-hole pairs condensate

We report on the transfer of coherence from a quantum-well electron-hole condensate to the light it emits. As a function of density, the coherence of the electron-hole pair system evolves from being full for the low density Bose-Einstein condensate to a chaotic behavior for a high density BCS-like state. This degree of coherence is transfered to the light emitted in a damped oscillatory way in the ultrafast regime. Additionally, the photon field exhibits squeezing properties during the transfer time. We analyze the effect of light frequency and separation between electron and hole layers on the optical coherence. Our results suggest new type of ultrafast experiments for detecting electron-hole pair condensation.

Fermi-edge singularities in linear and non-linear ultrafast spectroscopy

We discuss Fermi-edge singularity effects on the linear and nonlinear transient response of an electron gas in a doped semiconductor. We use a bosonization scheme to describe the low energy excitations, which allows to compute the time and temperature dependence of the response functions. Coherent control of the energy absorption at resonance is analyzed in the linear regime. It is shown that a phase-shift appears in the coherent control oscillations, which is not present in the excitonic case. The nonlinear response is calculated analytically and used to predict that four wave-mixing experiments would present a Fermi-edge singularity when the exciting energy is varied. A new dephasing mechanism is predicted in doped samples that depends linearly on temperature and is produced by the low-energy bosonic excitations in the conduction band.

Kondo effect in multielectron quantum dots at high magnetic fields

We present a general description of low temperature transport through a quantum dot with any number of electrons at filling factor $1<ν<2$. We provide a general description of a novel Kondo effect which is turned on by application of an appropriate magnetic field. The spin-flip scattering of carriers by the quantum dot only involves two states of the scatterer which may have a large spin. This process is described by spin-flip Hubbard operators, which change the angular momentum, leading to a Kondo Hamiltonian. We obtain antiferromagnetic exchange couplings depending on tunneling amplitudes and correlation effects. Since Kondo temperature has an exponential dependence on exchange couplings, quantitative variations of the parameters in different regimes have important experimental consequences. In particular, we discuss the {\it chess board} aspect of the experimental conductance when represented in a grey scale as a function of both the magnetic field and the gate potential affecting the quantum dot.

Microscopic theory for quantum mirages in quantum corrals

Scanning tunneling microscopy permits to image the Kondo resonance of a single magnetic atom adsorbed on a metallic surface. When the magnetic impurity is placed at the focus of an elliptical quantum corral, a Kondo resonance has been recently observed both on top of the impurity and on top of the focus where no magnetic impurity is present. This projection of the Kondo resonance to a remote point on the surface is referred to as quantum mirage. We present a quantum mechanical theory for the quantum mirage inside an ideal quantum corral and predict that the mirage will occur in corrals with shapes other than elliptical.
