Write asymmetry of spin-orbit torque memory induced by in-plane magnetic fields

Write asymmetry, the significantly different write current for high-to-low and low-to-high resistance switching because of natural stochastic behaviors of magnetization, is a fundamental issue in magnetic random-access memory (MRAM). For high-performance spin transfer torque (STT) MRAM, it can be eliminated by precisely controlling atomically thin magnetic multilayers or by introducing compensation techniques in circuit-level designs, while for spin-orbit torque (SOT) MRAM, it has not been addressed. Here we systematically investigated the write asymmetry of SOT-MRAM as a function of applied magnetic fields (H) and demonstrated that the write currents are intrinsically asymmetric due to different SOT efficiencies for high-to-low and low-to-high switching. Furthermore, we found that the SOT efficiency is very sensitive to the tilt angle between H and write current, which can be tuned through H to achieve symmetric SOT switching. These results provide an additional guideline for designing SOT devices and suggest that the write asymmetry can be eliminated by adjusting the introduced effective magnetic fields within a field-free SOT-MRAM architecture.

Structures in compressible magnetoconvection and the nature of umbral dots

Structures seen in idealized numerical experiments on compressible magnetoconvection in an imposed strong vertical magnetic field show important differences from those detected in observations or realistic numerical simulations of sunspot umbrae. To elucidate the origin of these discrepancies, we present a series of idealized 3D compressible magnetoconvection experiments that differ from previous such experiments in several details, bringing them closer to realistic solar conditions. An initially vertical magnetic field B 0 is imposed on a time snapshot of fully developed solar-like turbulent convection in a layer bounded by a stable layer from above. Upon relaxation to a statistically steady state, the structure of the flow field and magnetic field is examined. Instead of the vigorous granular convection (GRC) well known to take place in magnetized or weakly magnetized convection, for high values of B0 heat is transported by small-scale convection (SSC) in the form of narrow, persistent convective columns consisting of slender upflows accompanied by adjacent downflow patches, which are reminiscent of the 'convectons' identified in earlier semianalytic models. For moderate field strengths, flux separation (FXS) is observed: isolated field-free inclusions of GRC are embedded in a strongly magnetized plasma with SSC. Between the SSC and FXS regimes, a transitional regime (F/S) is identified where convectons dynamically evolve into multiply segmented granular inclusions and back. Our results agree in some aspects more closely with observed umbral structures than earlier idealized models, because they do reproduce the strong localized, patchy downflows immediately adjacent to the narrow convective columns. Based on recent observations of umbral dots, we suggest that in some cases the conditions in sunspot umbrae correspond to the newly identified F/S transitional regime.

Theory of localization and resonance phenomena in the quantum kicked rotor

We present an analytic theory of quantum interference and Anderson localization in the quantum kicked rotor (QKR). The behavior of the system is known to depend sensitively on the value of its effective Planck's constant $\he$. We here show that for rational values of $\he/(4π)=p/q$, it bears similarity to a disordered metallic ring of circumference $q$ and threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm flux. Building on that correspondence, we obtain quantitative results for the time--dependent behavior of the QKR kinetic energy, $E(\tilde t)$ (this is an observable which sensitively probes the system's localization properties). For values of $q$ smaller than the localization length $ξ$, we obtain scaling $E(\tilde t) \sim Δ\tilde t^2$, where $Δ=2π/q$ is the quasi--energy level spacing on the ring. This scaling is indicative of a long time dynamics that is neither localized nor diffusive. For larger values $q\gg ξ$, the functions $E(\tilde t)\to ξ^2$ saturates (up to exponentially small corrections $\sim\exp(-q/ξ)$), thus reflecting essentially localized behavior.

Deterministic Weak Localization in Periodic Structures

The weak localization is found for perfect periodic structures exhibiting deterministic classical diffusion. In particular, the velocity autocorrelation function develops a universal quantum power law decay at 4 times Ehrenfest time, following the classical stretched-exponential type decay. Such deterministic weak localization is robust against weak enough randomness (e.g., quantum impurities). In the 1D and 2D cases, we argue that at the quantum limit states localized in the Bravis cell are turned into Bloch states by quantum tunnelling.

Ehrenfest time in the weak dynamical localization

The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) is known to exhibit dynamical localization in the space of its angular momentum. The present paper is devoted to the systematic first--principal (without a regularizer) diagrammatic calculations of the weak--localization corrections for QKR. Our particular emphasis is on the Ehrenfest time regime -- the phenomena characteristic for the classical--to--quantum crossover of classically chaotic systems.

Weak dynamical localization in periodically kicked cold atomic gases

Quantum kicked rotor was recently realized in experiments with cold atomic gases and standing optical waves. As predicted, it exhibits dynamical localization in the momentum space. Here we consider the weak localization regime concentrating on the Ehrenfest time scale. The later accounts for the spread-time of a minimal wavepacket and is proportional to the logarithm of the Planck constant. We show that the onset of the dynamical localization is essentially delayed by four Ehrenfest times and give quantitative predictions suitable for an experimental verification.
