Construction, commissioning, and performance of the ENUBET demonstrator

A final full-size prototype of the instrumented decay tunnel of ENUBET, referred to as the Demonstrator, was constructed and its performance was tested during the 2022, 2023 and 2024 beam test campaigns at the CERN East Area facility. We demonstrate the full scalability of this specialized longitudinal sampling calorimeter technology, based on iron absorbers and scintillator tiles readout by wavelength-shifting fibers and SiPMs. In addition, we evaluate the channel-by- channel response and the performance in terms of electron energy resolution, linearity, and particle identification capabilities, using charged particle beams with energies up to 5 GeV. A comparison with the predictions of a GEANT4 simulation of the prototype is also presented. The results meet the requirements for neutrino monitoring through lepton identification in the decay tunnel and validate the ENUBET full simulation. Although some limitations have been identified, they can be readily addressed in future developments.

nuSCOPE: A short-baseline neutrino beam at CERN for high-precision cross-section measurements

A new generation of neutrino cross-section experiments at the GeV scale is crucial in the precision era of oscillation physics and lepton flavor studies. In this document, we present a novel neutrino beam design that leverages the experience and R&D achievements of the NP06/ENUBET and NuTag Collaborations and explore its potential implementation at CERN. This beam enables flux monitoring at the percent level and provides a neutrino energy measurement independent of final state particle reconstruction at the neutrino detector. As a result, it eliminates the two primary sources of systematic uncertainty in cross-section measurements: flux normalization and energy bias caused by nuclear effects. We provide a detailed description of the beam technology and instrumentation, along with an overview of its physics potential, with particular emphasis on cross-sections relevant to DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande.

Summary Report of the Physics Beyond Colliders Study at CERN

The Physics Beyond Collider (PBC) Study Group was initially mandated by the CERN Management to prepare the previous European Particle Physics Strategy Update for CERN projects other than the high-energy frontier colliders. The main findings were summarized in an PBC Summary Report submitted to the Strategy Update. Following the Update process, the PBC Study Group was confirmed on a permanent basis with an updated mandate taking into account the strategy recommendations. The Study Group is now in charge of supporting the proponents of new ideas to address the technical issues and physics motivation of the projects ahead of their review by the CERN Scientific Committees and decision by the Management. The present document updates the previous PBC summary report to inform the new ongoing European Particle Physics Strategy Update process, taking into account the evolution of the CERN and worldwide landscapes and the new projects under consideration within the Study Group.

Post-LS3 Experimental Options in ECN3

The Experimental Cavern North 3 (ECN3) is an underground experimental cavern on the CERN Prévessin site. ECN3 currently hosts the NA62 experiment, with a physics programme devoted to rare kaon decays and searches of hidden particles approved until Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). Several options are proposed on the longer term in order to make best use of the worldwide unique potential of the high-intensity/high-energy proton beam extracted from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in ECN3. The current status of their study by the CERN Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) Study Group is presented, including considerations on beam requirements and upgrades, detector R&D and construction, schedules and cost, as well as physics potential within the CERN and worldwide landscape.

The vector-apodizing phase plate coronagraph: design, current performance, and future development

Over the last decade, the vector-apodizing phase plate (vAPP) coronagraph has been developed from concept to on-sky application in many high-contrast imaging systems on 8-m class telescopes. The vAPP is an geometric-phase patterned coronagraph that is inherently broadband, and its manufacturing is enabled only by direct-write technology for liquid-crystal patterns. The vAPP generates two coronagraphic PSFs that cancel starlight on opposite sides of the point spread function (PSF) and have opposite circular polarization states. The efficiency, that is the amount of light in these PSFs, depends on the retardance offset from half-wave of the liquid-crystal retarder. Using different liquid-crystal recipes to tune the retardance, different vAPPs operate with high efficiencies ($>96\%$) in the visible and thermal infrared (0.55 $μ$m to 5 $μ$m). Since 2015, seven vAPPs have been installed in a total of six different instruments, including Magellan/MagAO, Magellan/MagAO-X, Subaru/SCExAO, and LBT/LMIRcam. Using two integral field spectrographs installed on the latter two instruments, these vAPPs can provide low-resolution spectra (R$\sim$30) between 1 $μ$m and 5 $μ$m. We review the design process, development, commissioning, on-sky performance, and first scientific results of all commissioned vAPPs. We report on the lessons learned and conclude with perspectives for future developments and applications.

Improvement of HRS Variability in OxRRAM by Tailored Metallic Liner

In this work, we propose a novel integration in order to significantly reduce the High Resistance State vari-ability and to improve thermal stability in Oxide-based Resistive Random Access Memory (OxRRAM) devices. A novel device featuring a metallic liner, acting as a parallel resistance, is presented. To assess the effect of this solution, we compare the results with a standard OxRRAM cell structure. A very good stability of the resistive states, both in endurance and temperature, is highlighted and explained thanks to a conductive fila-ment based model.

Summary Report of Physics Beyond Colliders at CERN

Physics Beyond Colliders is an exploratory study aimed at exploiting the full scientific potential of CERN's accelerator complex and its scientific infrastructure in the next two decades through projects complementary to the LHC, HL-LHC and other possible future colliders. These projects should target fundamental physics questions that are similar in spirit to those addressed by high-energy colliders, but that require different types of beams and experiments. A kick-off workshop held in September 2016 identified a number of areas of interest and working groups have been set-up to study and develop these directions. All projects currently under consideration are presented including physics motivation, a brief outline of the experimental set-up and the status of the corresponding beam and detector technological studies. The proposals are also put in context of the worldwide landscape and their implementation issues are discussed.

Multidomain spectral method for the Gauss hypergeometric function

We present a multidomain spectral approach for Fuchsian ordinary differential equations in the particular case of the hypergeometric equation. Our hybrid approach uses Frobenius' method and Moebius transformations in the vicinity of each of the singular points of the hypergeometric equation, which leads to a natural decomposition of the real axis into domains. In each domain, solutions to the hypergeometric equation are constructed via the well-conditioned ultraspherical spectral method. The solutions are matched at the domain boundaries to lead to a solution which is analytic on the whole compactified real line $\mathbb{R}\cup {\infty}$, except for the singular points and cuts of the Riemann surface on which the solution is defined. The solution is further extended to the whole Riemann sphere by using the same approach for ellipses enclosing the singularities. The hypergeometric equation is solved on the ellipses with the boundary data from the real axis. This solution is continued as a harmonic function to the interior of the disk by solving the Laplace equation in polar coordinates with an optimal complexity Fourier--ultraspherical spectral method.

Covariant formulation for the optimal control of jointed arm robots: an alternative to Pontryagin's principle

We elaborate algorithms able to efficiently command the actuators of an articulated robot. Our time discretization method is based on cubic and quintic Hermite Finite Elements. The suggested control optimization consists in minimizing directly the selected criterium by a conjugate gradient type algorithm. A generic example illustrates the super convergence of the Hermite's technique.
