Quantum field theory treatment of magnetic effects on a system of free electrons

The effects of a magnetic field on the energy and on the spin of free electrons are computed in the framework of quantum field theory. In the case of a constant moderate field and with relatively slow electrons, the derived formulae are particularly simple. A comparison with the approaches of classical physics and of quantum mechanics shows essential differences and important analogies. The relevance to the magnetic effects of the initial polarization components of the electron states and the possible existence of special values of these quantities are discussed in the final conclusions, which might be useful to explain recent experiments on quasi-free electrons in chiral systems in biology.

Quantum field theory treatment of magnetic effects on the spin and orbital angular momentum of a free electron

We consider in a quantum field theory framework the effects of a classical magnetic field on the spin and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a free electron. We derive formulae for the changes in the spin and OAM due to the introduction of a general classical background field. We consider then a constant magnetic field, in which case the relevant expressions of the effects become much simpler and conversions between spin and OAM become readily apparent. An estimate of the expectation values for a realistic electron state is also given. Our findings may be of interest to researchers in spintronics and the field of quantum biology, where electron spin has been implicated on macroscopic time and energy scales.

New Physics signals from measurable polarization asymmetries at LHC

We propose a new type of Z polarization asymmetry in bottom-Z production at LHC that should be realistically measurable and would provide the determination of the so-called $A_b$ parameter, whose available measured value still appears to be in disagreement with the Standard Model prediction. This polarization can be measured independently of a possible existence of Supersymmetry. If Supersymmetry is found, a second polarization, i.e. the top longitudinal polarization in top-charged Higgs production, would neatly identify the $\tan β$ parameter. In this case, the value of $A_b$ should be in agreement with the Standard Model. If Supersymmetry does not exist, a residual disagreement of $A_b$ from the Standard Model prediction would be a clean signal of New Physics of "non Supersymmetric" origin.

The relevance of polarized bZ production at LHC

We consider the Z polarization asymmetry A_Z=(sigma(Z_R)-sigma(Z_L))/(sigma(Z_R)+sigma(Z_L)) in the process of associated bZ production at the LHC. We show that in the Standard Model (SM) this quantity is essentially given by its Born approximation, remaining almost unaffected by QCD scales and parton distribution functions variations as well as by electroweak corrections. The theoretical quantity that appears in A_Z is the same that provides the LEP1 Z -> b bbar forward-backward asymmetry, the only measured observable still in some contradiction with the SM prediction. In this sense, A_Z would provide the possibility of an independent verification of the possible SM discrepancy, which could reach, if consistency with LEP1 measurements is imposed, values of the relative ten percent size.

The Left-Right asymmetry of top quarks in associated top-charged Higgs bosons at the LHC as a probe of the tan$β$ parameter

Many extensions of the Standard Model involve two Higgs doublet fields to break the electroweak symmetry, leading to the existence of three neutral and two charged Higgs particles. In particular, this is the case of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, the MSSM. A very important parameter is $\tanβ$ defined as the ratio of the vacuum expectation value of the two Higgs doublets. In this paper we focus on the left-right asymmetry in the production of polarised top quarks in association with charged Higgs bosons at the LHC. This quantity allows for a theoretically clean determination of $\tanβ$. In the MSSM, the asymmetry remains sensitive to the strong and electroweak radiative corrections and, thus, to the superparticle spectrum. Some possible implications of these results are discussed.

Semi-inclusive bottom-Higgs production at LHC: The complete one-loop electroweak effect in the MSSM

We present the first complete calculation of the one-loop electroweak effect in the process of semi-inclusive bottom-Higgs production at LHC in the MSSM. The size of the electroweak contribution depends on the choice of the final produced neutral Higgs boson, and can be relevant, in some range of the input parameters. A comparison of the one-loop results obtained in two different renormalization schemes is also performed, showing a very good NLO scheme independence. We further comment on two possible, simpler, approximations of the full NLO result, and on their reliabilty.

Associated production of charged Higgs and top at LHC: the role of the complete electroweak supersymmetric contribution

The process of charged Higgs production in association with a top quark at the LHC has been calculated at the complete NLO electroweak level both in a Two Higgs Doublets Model and in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, assuming a mSUGRA breaking scheme. We have numerically explored the size of the one-loop corrections in two typical supersymmetric scenarios, with particular attention to the tan beta dependence, and we have found that they remain perturbatively small but possibly sizable, reaching a 20% limit for extreme values of tan beta, when the complete set of Feynman diagrams is taken into account.

A peculiar property of SUSY amplitudes at high energy

We observe that the electroweak one loop correction to the quark+gluon to quark+Higgs amplitude at high energy involves both single and quadratic logarithms of the energy in the SM case but only quadratic logarithms in the MSSM case. We explore the origin of this special SUSY cancellation, both in a diagrammatic way and through the splitting+Parameter Renormalization procedure. We show that it is not an accident but a remarkableand general SUSY property of the renormalized Higgs-fermion-fermion and Higgsino-sfermion-fermion vertices which directly reflects in such processes, for example in $bg\to tH^-$, $bg\to bH^0$, $bg\to bh^0$, $bg\to bA^0$, and through equivalence in $bg\to tW^-_{long}$, $bg\to bZ_{long}$, as well as in $bg\to \tilde{t}χ^-$, $bg\to\tilde{b}χ^0$. This simplification of the high energy behaviour (which only leaves quadratic logarithms involving pure gauge couplings without any free parameter) allows to write simple relations among these various processes which constitute genuine tests of the assumed SUSY model.

One-loop electroweak effects on stop-chargino production at LHC

The process of stop-chargino production at LHC has been calculated in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at the complete electroweak one-loop level, assuming a mSUGRA symmetry breaking scheme. Several properties of the angular and invariant mass distributions of the basic bottom-gluon to stop-chargino amplitudes have been derived. For a meaningful collection of different benchmark points the overall electroweak one-loop effects are at most of the order of a few percent. At the realistically expected LHC accuracy, the main supersymmetric electroweak features of the process can be therefore essentially derived in this theoretical scheme from the simple Born level expressions.

A complete one-loop calculation of electroweak supersymmetric effects in $t$-channel single top production at LHC

We have computed the complete one-loop electroweak effects in the MSSM for single top (and single antitop) production in the $t$-channel at hadron colliders, generalizing a previous analysis performed for the dominant $dt$ final state and fully including QED effects. The results are quite similar for all processes. The overall Standard Model one-loop effect is small, of the few percent size. This is due to a compensation of weak and QED contributions that are of opposite sign. The genuine SUSY contribution is generally quite modest in the mSUGRA scenario. The experimental observables would therefore only practically depend, in this framework, on the CKM $Wtb$ coupling.

Stop-antistop and sbottom-antisbottom production at LHC: a one-loop search for model parameters dependence

We have computed the one-loop electroweak expression of diagonal and non diagonal stop-antistop and sbottom-antisbottom production from initial state gluons at LHC. We have investigated the possibility that the one-loop effects exhibit a dependence on "extra" supersymmetric parameters different from the final squark masses. Our results, given for a choice of twelve SUSY benchmark points in the MSSM with mSUGRA symmetry breaking, show that in some cases a mild dependence might arise, at the percent relative level, of not simple experimental detection.

A complete one-loop description of associated tW production at LHC and an estimate of possible genuine supersymmetric effects

We compute, in the MSSM framework, the sum of the one-loop electroweak and of the total QED radiation effects for the process $pp \to t W+X$, initiated by the parton process $bg\to tW$. Combining these terms with the existing NLO calculations of SM and SUSY QCD corrections, we analyze the overall one-loop supersymmetric effects on the partial rates of the process, obtained by integrating the differential cross section up to a final variable invariant mass. We conclude that, for some choices of the SUSY parameters and for relatively small final invariant masses, they could reach the relative ten percent level, possibly relevant for a dedicated experimental effort at LHC.

Supersymmetry spectroscopy in stop-chargino production at LHC

We consider the process of associated stop-chargino production in the MSSM at LHC and show that, at the simplest Born level, the production rate is dramatically sensitive to the choice of the benchmark points, oscillating from potentially "visible" maxima of the picobarn size to much smaller, hardly "visible", values. Adopting a canonical choice of SM type CKM matrices, we also show that in some "visible" cases the total rate exhibits a possibly relevant dependence on tan(beta).

The relevance of virtual electroweak effects in the overall $t$-channel single top production at LHC

We compute the complete one loop electroweak effects in the MSSM for the eight processes of single top (and single antitop) production in the $t$-channel at hadron colliders, generalizing a previous analysis performed for the dominant $dt$ final state. The results are quite similar for all processes, showing an impressively large Standard Model effect and a generally modest genuine SUSY contribution in the mSUGRA scenario. The one loop effect on the total rate is shown and the possibility of measuring it at LHC is discussed.

Single top production in the $t$-channel at LHC: a realistic test of electroweak models

We compute the complete electroweak one-loop effect on the process of $t$-channel single top production at LHC in the Standard Model and in the MSSM within the mSUGRA symmetry breaking scheme. We find that the one-loop electroweak SM effect is large, and decreases the cross section of an amount that is of the same size as that of the NLO QCD one. The genuine SUSY effect in the mSUGRA scheme, for a general choice of benchmark points, is rather small. It might become large and visible in more general scenarios around thresholds involving light stop and neutralino mass values.

Associated tW production at LHC: a complete calculation of electroweak supersymmetric effects at one loop

We compute, in the MSSM framework, the total electroweak contributions at one loop for the process pp -> tW+X, initiated by the parton process bg -> tW. The supersymmetric effect is analyzed for various choices of the SUSY benchmark points. Choosing realistic unpolarized and polarized experimental quantities, we show the size of the various effects and discuss their dependence on the MSSM parameters.

Complete electroweak one loop contributions to the pair production cross section of MSSM charged and neutral Higgs bosons in e+e- collisions

In this paper, we review the production cross section for charged and neutral Higgs bosons pairs in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions beyond the tree level, in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). A complete list of formulas for all electroweak contributions at the one loop level is given. A numerical code has been developed in order to compute them accurately and, in turn, to compare the MSSM Higgs bosons pair production cross sections at tree level and at the one loop level.
