Singular behaviour of the electromagnetic field

The singularities of the electromagnetic field are derived to include all the point-like multipoles representing an electric charge and current distribution. Firstly derived in the static case, the result is generalized to the dynamic one. We establish a simple procedure for passing from the first, to the second case.

Explanation notes on the multipole expansions of the electromagnetic field

Starting from Jefimenko's equations, we consider the multipole expansions of electric and magnetic fields for a confined system of charges and currents. We analyze and comment on the calculus of radiated power, on the consistent use of approximation criteria, on the invariance of physical results when changing the point of reference, as well as on the use of electric and magnetic moments described by symmetric and trace free tensors.

Some alternatives for calculating multipole expansions of the electromagnetic radiation field

We discuss the multipolar expansion of the electromagnetic field with an emphasis on the radiated field. We investigate if the employment of Jefimenko's equations brings a new insight into the calculation of the radiation field. We show that the affirmation is valid if one finds an interesting example in which inverting the order between spatial derivatives and integration is not allowed. Further, we consider the generalization of the multipolar expansion of the power radiated by a confined system of charges and currents to a higher arbitrary order.

Some Aspects of the Electromagnetic Multipole Expansions

Various procedures for expressing the multipolar expansion of the electromagnetic field are considered with application to the calculation of the radiated power. Some results from literature are discussed and perspective of developing the subject is pointed out.

Expressing the electromagnetic interaction energy

The interaction energy of a given distribution of electric charges and currents with an electromagnetic external field is expressed by the Cartesian components of the multipole tensors of this distribution. Special attention is paid to the reduction of these tensors to the symmetric traceless ones. Although one uses the Cartesian tensor components in the explicit calculations, the final results are given in consistent tensorial form.

Expressing the power radiated by electric charged systems

After a systematic introduction of some formulae for the energy radiated by localized electric charges and currents, one considers the multipole radiation and the reduction of the multipole tensors to the symmetric traceless ones.
