Robust Ferroelectric State in Multiferroic Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$WO$_4$

We report the remarkably robust ferroelectric state in the multiferroic compound Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$WO$_4$. The substitution of the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ with nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ reduces the magnetic exchange and provides control of the various magnetic and multiferroic states of MnWO$_4$. Only 5 % of Zn substitution results in a complete suppression of the frustrated collinear (paraelectric) low temperature phase. The helical magnetic and ferroelectric phase develops as the ground state. The multiferroic state is stable up to a high level of substitution of more than 50 %. The magnetic, thermodynamic, and dielectric properties as well as the ferroelectric polarization of single crystals of Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$WO$_4$ are studied for different substitutions up to x=0.5. The magnetic phases have been identified in single crystal neutron scattering experiments. The ferroelectric polarization scales with the neutron intensity of the incommensurate peak of the helical phase.

Magnetic and multiferroic phases of single-crystalline Mn$_{0.85}$Co$_{0.15}$WO$_4$

The magnetic and multiferroic phase diagram of Mn$_{0.85}$Co$_{0.15}$WO$_4$ single crystals is investigated by means of magnetic, heat capacity, dielectric, polarization, and neutron scattering experiments. Three magnetic phase transitions are detected through distinct anomalies in all physical quantities. The ferroelectric polarization is observed only along the b-axis below 10 K but not along the a-axis as recently suggested. The magnetic phases studied by neutron scattering are very complex. Up to four different magnetic structures, partially coexisting at certain temperature ranges, have been identified. Upon decreasing temperature two commensurate phases (AF4, AF1) are followed by an incommensurate phase (AF5) and a second incommensurate phase (AF2) is detected as a minor phase. The ferroelectric polarization is possibly associated with both (AF2 and AF5) phases.

Magnetoelectricity and Magnetostriction due to the Rare Earth Moment in TmAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$

The magnetic properties, the magnetostriction, and the magnetoelectric effect in the d-electron free rare-earth aluminum borate TmAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated between room temperature and 2 K. The magnetic susceptibility reveals a strong anisotropy with the hexagonal c-axis as the hard magnetic axis. Magnetostriction measurements show a large effect of an in-plane field reducing both, the a- and c-axis lattice parameters. The magnetoelectric polarization change in a- and c-directions reaches up to 300 $μ$C/m$^2$ at 70 kOe with the field applied along the a-axis. The magnetoelectric polarization is proportional to the lattice contraction in magnetic field. The results of this investigation prove the existence of a significant coupling between the rare earth magnetic moment and the lattice in $R$Al$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ compounds ($R$ = rare earth). They further show that the rare earth moment itself will generate a large magnetoelectric effect which makes it easier to study and to understand the origin of the magnetoelectric interaction in this class of materials.

Lower Critical Field, Anisotropy, and Two-Gap Features of LiFeAs

The magnetic properties of LiFeAs, as single crystalline and polycrystalline samples, were investigated. The lower critical field deduced from the vortex penetration of two single crystals appears to be almost isotropic with a temperature dependence closer to that of two-gap superconductors. The parameters extracted from the reversible magnetizations of sintered polycrystalline samples are in good agreement with those from the single crystal data.

Evidence for multiple gaps in specific heat of LiFeAs crystals

The zero-field specific heat of LiFeAs was measured on several single crystals selected from a bulk sample. A sharp Delta Cp/Tc anomaly of approximately 20 mJ/(mole x K^2) was observed. The value appears to be between those of SmFeAs(O0.9F0.1) and (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2, but bears no clear correlation with their Sommerfeld coefficients. The electronic specific heat below Tc further reveals a two-gap structure with the narrower one only on the order of 0.7 meV. While the results are in rough agreement with the Hc1(T) previously reported on both LiFeAs and (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2, they are different from the published specific-heat data of a (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 single crystal.

Magnetoelectric Effect and Spontaneous Polarization in HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and Ho$_{0.5}$Nd$_{0.5}$Fe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$

The thermodynamic, magnetic, dielectric, and magnetoelectric properties of HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and Ho$_{0.5}$Nd$_{0.5}$Fe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated. Both compounds show a second order Neél transition above 30 K and a first order spin reorientation transition below 10 K. HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ develops a spontaneous electrical polarization below the Neél temperature (T$_N$) which is diminished in external magnetic fields. No magnetoelectric effect could be observed in HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. In contrast, the solid solution Ho$_{0.5}$Nd$_{0.5}$Fe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ exhibits both, a spontaneous polarization below T$_N$ and a magnetoelectric effect at higher fields that extends to high temperatures. The superposition of spontaneous polarization, induced by the internal magnetic field in the ordered state, and the magnetoelectric polarizations due to the external field results in a complex behavior of the total polarization measured as a function of temperature and field.

The superconductor KxSr(1-x)Fe2As2: Normal state and superconducting properties

The normal state and superconducting properties are investigated in the phase diagram of K_xSr_{1-x}Fe_2As_2 for 0<x<1. The ground state upper critical field, H_{c2}(0), is extrapolated from magnetic field dependent resistivity measurements. H_{c2}(0) scales with the critical temperature, T_c, of the superconducting transition. In the normal state the Seebeck coefficient is shown to experience a dramatic change near a critical substitution of x=0.3. This is associated with the formation of a spin density wave state above the superconducting transition temperature. The results provide strong evidence for the reconstruction of the Fermi surface with the onset of magnetic order.

The Synthesis and Characterization of LiFeAs and NaFeAs

The newest homologous series of superconducting As-pnictides, LiFeAs (Li111) and NaFeAs (Na111) have been synthesized and investigated. Both crystallize with the layered tetragonal anti-PbFCl-type structure in P4/nmm space group. Polycrystalline samples and single-crystals of Li111 and Na111 display superconducting transitions at ~ 18 K and 12-25 K, respectively. No magnetic order has been found in either compound, although a weak magnetic background is clearly in evidence. The origin of the carriers and the stoichiometric compositions of Li111 and Na111 were explored.

High Pressure Studies on Fe-Pnictide Superconductors

A review of high-pressure studies on Fe-pnictide superconductors is given. The pressure effects on the magnetic and superconducting transitions are discussed for different classes of doped and undoped FeAs-compounds, ROFeAs (R = rare earth), AeFe2As2 (Ae = Ca, Sr, Ba), and AFeAs (A = Li, Na). Pressure tends to decrease the magnetic transition temperature in the undoped or only slightly doped compounds. The superconducting Tc increases with pressure for underdoped FeAs-pnictides, remains approximately constant for optimal doping, and decreases linearly in the overdoped range. The undoped LaOFeAs and AeFe2As2 become superconducting under pressure although nonhydrostatic pressure conditions seem to play a role in CaFe2As2. The superconductivity in the (undoped) AFeAs is explained as a chemical pressure effect due to the volume contraction caused by the small ionic size of the A-elements. The binary FeSe shows the largest pressure coefficient of Tc in the Se-deficient superconducting phase.

Magnetic switching and phase competition in the multiferroic antiferromagnet $\rm Mn_{1-x}Fe_xWO_4$

Elastic neutron scattering is used to study the spin correlations in the multiferroic $\rm Mn_{1-x}Fe_{x}WO_4$ with $x=0.035, 0.05$ and 0.10. The noncollinear, incommensurate (ICM) magnetic structure associated with the ferroelectric (FE) phase in pure $\rm MnWO_4$ is suppressed at $x=0.035$ and completely absent at $x=0.10$. The ICM spin order and FE phase can be restored by applying a magnetic field along the spin easy-axis. The low-$T$ commensurate magnetic structure extends in both H/T with increasing Fe concentration. The systematic evolution of the magnetic and electric properties indicates that the noncollinear ICM spin order results from competing magnetic interactions and its stabilization can be tuned by the internal ($x$) or external (magnetic field) perturbations.

Superconductivity up to 37 K in (A1-xSrx)Fe2As2 with A=K and Cs

A new hight Tc Fe-based compound system, AFe2As2 with A = K, Cs, K/Sr and Cs/Sr has been found. Through electron-doping, Tc of the A = K and Cs compounds rises to ~37 K, and finally enter a spin-density-wave state (SDW) through further electron doping with Sr. The observation demonstrates the crucial role of the (FeAs)-layers in the superconductivity in the Fe-based layered system and the special feature of elemental A-layers in this complex chemical system may provide new avenues to superconductivity at a higher Tc.

Pressure Effects on the Superconducting and Spin-Density-Wave States of the Newly Discovered Sm(O1-xFx)FeAs

High temperature superconductors with a Tc above 40 K have been found to be strongly correlated electron systems and to have a layered structure. Guided by these rules, Kamihara et al. discovered a Tc up to 26 K in the layered La(O1-xFx)FeAs. By replacing La with tri-valence rare-earth elements RE of smaller ionic radii, Tc has subsequently been raised to 41-52 K. Many theoretical models have been proposed emphasizing the important magnetic origin of superconductivity in this compound system and a possible further Tc-enhancement in RE(O1-xFx)FeAs by compression. This later prediction appears to be supported by the pressure-induced Tc-increase in La(O0.89F0.11)FeAs observed. Here we show that, in contrast to previous expectations, pressure can either suppress or enhance Tc, depending on the doping level, suggesting that a Tc exceeding 50's K may be found only in the yet-to-be discovered compound systems related to but different from R(O1-xFx)FeAs and that the Tc of La(O1-xFx)FeAs and Sm(O1-xFx)FeAs may be further raised to 50's K.

Raman scattering study of (K$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($x$ = 0.0, 0.4)

Polarized Raman spectra of non-superconducting SrFe$_2$As$_2$ and superconducting K$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c = 37$ K) are reported. All four phonon modes (A$_{1g}$ + B$_{1g}$ + 2E$_g$) allowed by symmetry, are found and identified. Shell model gives reasonable description of the spectra. No detectable anomalies are observed near the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ or the superconducting transition in K$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$.

Raman phonons in ReOFeAs (Re= Sm, La)

We report the polarized Raman spectra of undoped ReOFeAs (Re = Sm, La) collected at room temperature from $ab$ surfaces of impurity free microcrystals. The spectra exhibit sharp phonon lines on very weak electronic scattering background. The frequency and symmetry of the four Raman phonons involving out-of-plane atomic vibrations are found at 170 cm-1 (A1g, Sm), 201 cm-1 (A1g, As), 208 cm-1 (B1g, Fe), 345 cm-1(B1g, O) for SmOFeAs, and 162 cm-1 (A1g, La), 208 cm-1 (A1g, As), 201 cm-1 (B1g, Fe), 316 cm-1 (B1g, O) for LaOFeAs.

The Suppression and Recovery of the Ferroelectric Phase in Multiferroic $MnWO_4$

We report the discovery of a complete suppression of ferroelectricity in $MnWO_4$ by 10 % iron substitution and its restoration in external magnetic fields. The spontaneous polarization in $Mn_{0.9}Fe_{0.1}WO_4$ arises below 12 K in external fields above 4 T. The magnetic/ferroelectric phase diagram is constructed from the anomalies of the dielectric constant, polarization, magnetization, and heat capacity. The observations are qualitatively described by a mean field model with competing interactions and strong anisotropy. We propose that the magnetic field induces a non-collinear inversion symmetry breaking magnetic structure in $Mn_{0.9}Fe_{0.1}WO_4$.

Pressure dependence of the superconducting transition and electron correlations in Na_xCoO_2 \cdot 1.3H_2O

We report T_c and ^{59}Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on the cobalt oxide superconductor Na_{x}CoO_{2}\cdot 1.3H_{2}O (T_c=4.8 K) under hydrostatic pressure (P) up to 2.36 GPa. T_c decreases with increasing pressure at an average rate of -0.49\pm0.09 K/GPa. At low pressures P\leq0.49 GPa, the decrease of T_c is accompanied by a weakening of the spin correlations at a finite wave vector and a reduction of the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level. At high pressures above 1.93 GPa, however, the decrease of T_c is mainly due to a reduction of the DOS. These results indicate that the electronic/magnetic state of Co is primarily responsible for the superconductivity. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at P=0.49 GPa shows a T^3 variation below T_c down to T\sim 0.12T_c, which provides compelling evidence for the presence of line nodes in the superconducting gap function.

Magnetic phase diagrams of the Kagome staircase compound Co3V2O8

At zero magnetic field, a series of five phase transitions occur in Co3V2O8. The Neel temperature, TN=11.4 K, is followed by four additional phase changes at T1=8.9 K, T2=7.0 K, T3=6.9 K, and T4=6.2 K. The different phases are distinguished by the commensurability of the b-component of its spin density wave vector. We investigate the stability of these various phases under magnetic fields through dielectric constant and magnetic susceptibility anomalies. The field-temperature phase diagram of Co3V2O8 is completely resolved. The complexity of the phase diagram results from the competition of different magnetic states with almost equal ground state energies due to competing exchange interactions and frustration.

Ferroelectricity in perovskite $HoMnO_3$ and $YMnO_3$

Ferroelectricity is observed in orthorhombic $HoMnO_3$ and $YMnO_3$ at the magnetic lock-in transitions into an E-type structure or an incommensurate phase with a temperature independent wave vector, respectively. In $HoMnO_3$ the ferroelectric polarization strongly depends on the external magnetic field indicating the involvement of the rare earth moment order in this compound. The results are discussed within the framework of recent theoretical models, in particular the double exchange driven polar displacements predicted for E-type magnetic structures.
