Pressure effects on the electronic properties of the undoped superconductor ThFeAsN

The recently synthesized ThFeAsN iron-pnictide superconductor exhibits a $T_c$ of 30 K, the highest of the 1111-type series in absence of chemical doping. To understand how pressure affects its electronic properties, we carried out microscopic investigations up to 3 GPa via magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon-spin rotation experiments. The temperature dependence of the ${}^{75}$As Knight shift, the spin-lattice relaxation rates, and the magnetic penetration depth suggest a multi-band $s^{\pm}$-wave gap symmetry in the dirty limit, while the gap-to-$T_c$ ratio $Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_c$ hints at a strong-coupling scenario. Pressure modulates the geometrical parameters, thus reducing $T_c$, as well as $T_m$, the temperature where magnetic-relaxation rates are maximized, both at the same rate of approximately -1.1 K/GPa. This decrease of $T_c$ with pressure is consistent with band-structure calculations, which relate it to the deformation of the Fe 3$d_{z^2}$ orbitals.

Interplay of Wave Localization and Turbulence in Spin Seebeck Effect

One of the most important discoveries in spintronics is the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) recently observed in both insulating and (semi-)conducting magnets. However, the very existence of the effect in transverse configuration is still a subject of current debates, due to conflicting results reported in different experiments. Present understanding of the SSE is mainly based on a particle-like picture with the local equilibrium approximation (LEA), i.e., spatially resolved temperature-field assumed to describe the system. In this work, we abandon the LEA to some extent and develop a wave theory to explain the SSE, by highlighting the interplay between wave localization and turbulence. We show that the emerging SSE with a sign change in the high/low-temperature regions is closely related to the extendedness of the spin wave that senses an average temperature of the system. On the one hand, ubiquitous disorders (or magnetic field gradients) can strongly suppress the transverse spin Seebeck effect (TSSE) due to Anderson (or Wannier-Zeeman) spin-wave localization. On the other hand, the competing wave turbulence of interacting magnons tends to delocalize the wave, and thus remarkably revives the TSSE before the magnon self-trapping. Our theory provides a promising route to resolve the heated debate on TSSE with a clear experiment scheme to test it in future spin caloritronic devices.

Interaction of Individual Skyrmions in Nanostructured Cubic Chiral Magnet

We report the direct evidence of field-dependent character of the interaction between individual magnetic skyrmions as well as between skyrmions and edges in B20-type FeGe nanostripes observed by means of high resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that above certain critical values of external magnetic field the character of such long-range skyrmion interactions change from attraction to repulsion. Experimentally measured equilibrium inter-skyrmion and skrymion-edge distances as function of applied magnetic field shows quantitative agreement with the results of micromagnetic simulations. Important role of demagnetizing fields and internal symmetry of three-dimensional magnetic skyrmions are discussed in details.

Twisted skyrmion at domain boundaries and the method of image

We predict a novel twisted skyrmion structure at the boundary of two antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic domains with antiparallel magnetization directions. Through this intermediate state, skyrmions with opposite polarities can be freely switched between each other by spin-polarized electric currents. Based on these findings, we propose the concept of double-track skyrmion racetrack memory and logic gates where the binary data are represented by skyrmions with different polarities. The dynamics of skyrmion polarity reversal is theoretically studied. Using the method of image, we derive the analytical formula of the repulsive potential when a normal skyrmion approaches the domain boundary. A harmonic attractive potential well is obtained for the twisted skyrmion across the boundary. Micromagnetic simulations compare well with theoretical predictions. The method of image skyrmion proposed in this work can be used to deal with a large class of skyrmion-boundary interaction problems.

The selection function of the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anticentre

We present a detailed analysis of the selection function of the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-centre (LSS-GAC). LSS-GAC was designed to obtain low resolution optical spectra for a sample of more than 3 million stars in the Galactic anti-centre. The second release of value-added catalogues of the LSS-GAC (LSS-GAC DR2) contains stellar parameters, including radial velocity, atmospheric parameters, elemental abundances and absolute magnitudes deduced from 1.8 million spectra of 1.4 million unique stars targeted by the LSS-GAC between 2011 and 2014. For many studies using this database, such as those investigating the chemodynamical structure of the Milky Way, a detailed understanding of the selection function of the survey is indispensable. In this paper, we describe how the selection function of the LSS-GAC can be evaluated to sufficient detail and provide selection function corrections for all spectroscopic measurements with reliable parameters released in LSS-GAC DR2. The results, to be released as new entries in the LSS-GAC value-added catalogues, can be used to correct the selection effects of the catalogue for scientific studies of various purposes.

Dynamic magnetic-transformation-induced exchange bias in (Fe2O3)0.1-(FeTiO3)0.9

Up to now, for the conventional exchange bias (EB) systems there has been one pinning phase and one pinned phase, and the pinning and pinned phases are inherent to the material and do not mutually transform into each other. Interestingly, we show here that EB is observed in a special system (Fe2O3)0.1(FeTiO3)0.9 (HI9) different from the conventional EB system. Neutron powder diffraction and magnetic measurement confirm that for HI9: i) two types of short range antiferromagnetic ordering coexist, ii) there are two pinning phases and one pinned phase, iii) the pinned phase is not intrinsic to the structure but can be dynamically produced from the pinning phase with the help of an external magnetic field. Consequently, two anomalous EB behaviors are observed: i) both the coercivity (HC) and the exchange bias field (HE) simultaneously decrease to zero at 30 K, ii) for a high cooling field (Hcool) HE decreases logarithmically with increasing Hcool. Using Arrott plots it is confirmed that the first order magnetic phase transformation (FOMPT) from the AFM Fe2+ to ferromagnetic (FM) Fe2+ and the second order magnetic phase transformation (SOMPT) for the process whereby the FM Fe2+ aligns with the external field direction coexist in HI-9. The Morin transition and FOMPT cause the anomalous EB behaviors. This work may provide fresh ideas for research into EB behavior.

Direct detection of a break in the teraelectronvolt cosmic-ray spectrum of electrons and positrons

High energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs), which lose energy quickly during their propagation, provide an ideal probe of Galactic high-energy processes and may enable the observation of phenomena such as dark-matter particle annihilation or decay. The CRE spectrum has been directly measured up to $\sim 2$ TeV in previous balloon- or space-borne experiments, and indirectly up to $\sim 5$ TeV by ground-based Cherenkov $γ$-ray telescope arrays. Evidence for a spectral break in the TeV energy range has been provided by indirect measurements of H.E.S.S., although the results were qualified by sizeable systematic uncertainties. Here we report a direct measurement of CREs in the energy range $25~{\rm GeV}-4.6~{\rm TeV}$ by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) with unprecedentedly high energy resolution and low background. The majority of the spectrum can be properly fitted by a smoothly broken power-law model rather than a single power-law model. The direct detection of a spectral break at $E \sim0.9$ TeV confirms the evidence found by H.E.S.S., clarifies the behavior of the CRE spectrum at energies above 1 TeV and sheds light on the physical origin of the sub-TeV CREs.

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer mission

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), one of the four scientific space science missions within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a general purpose high energy cosmic-ray and gamma-ray observatory, which was successfully launched on December 17th, 2015 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The DAMPE scientific objectives include the study of galactic cosmic rays up to $\sim 10$ TeV and hundreds of TeV for electrons/gammas and nuclei respectively, and the search for dark matter signatures in their spectra. In this paper we illustrate the layout of the DAMPE instrument, and discuss the results of beam tests and calibrations performed on ground. Finally we present the expected performance in space and give an overview of the mission key scientific goals.

Mapping the three-dimensional dust extinction toward the supernova remnant S147 - the S147 dust cloud

We present a three dimensional (3D) extinction analysis in the region toward the supernova remnant (SNR) S147 (G180.0-1.7) using multi-band photometric data from the Xuyi Schmidt Telescope Photometric Survey of the Galactic Anticentre (XSTPS-GAC), 2MASS and WISE. We isolate a previously unrecognised dust structure likely to be associated with SNR S147. The structure, which we term as "S147 dust cloud", is estimated to have a distance $d$ = 1.22 $\pm$ 0.21 kpc, consistent with the conjecture that S147 is associated with pulsar PSR J0538 + 2817. The cloud includes several dense clumps of relatively high extinction that locate on the radio shell of S147 and coincide spatially with the CO and gamma-ray emission features. We conclude that the usage of CO measurements to trace the SNR associated MCs is unavoidably limited by the detection threshold, dust depletion, and the difficulty of distance estimates in the outer Galaxy. 3D dust extinction mapping may provide a better way to identify and study SNR-MC interactions.

High-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductivity in undoped ThFeAsN

Unlike the widely studied ReFeAsO series, the newly discovered iron-based superconductor ThFeAsN exhibits a remarkably high critical temperature of 30 K, without chemical doping or external pressure. Here we investigate in detail its magnetic and superconducting properties via muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques and show that ThFeAsN exhibits strong magnetic fluctuations, suppressed below 35 K, but no magnetic order. This contrasts strongly with the ReFeAsO series, where stoichiometric parent materials order antiferromagnetically and superconductivity appears only upon doping. The ThFeAsN case indicates that Fermi-surface modifications due to structural distortions and correlation effects are as important as doping in inducing superconductivity. The direct competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, which in ThFeAsN (as in LiFeAs) occurs at already zero doping, may indicate a significant deviation of the $s$-wave superconducting gap in this compound from the standard $s^{\pm}$ scenario.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Feasibility study for the measurement of $πN$ TDAs at PANDA in $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0$

The exclusive charmonium production process in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation with an associated $π^0$ meson $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0$ is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/ψ\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\toπ^+π^-π^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0π^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to π^+ π^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Rejuvenation of metallic glasses under high pressure

Modulating energy states of metallic glasses (MGs) is significant in understanding the nature of glasses and control their properties. In this study, we show that rejuvenation in enthalpy can be achieved and preserved in bulk MGs by using high pressure (HP) annealing, which is a controllable method to continuously alter the energy states of MGs. Contrary to the decrease in enthalpy by conventional annealing at ambient pressure, such rejuvenation can occur and be enhanced by increasing both of annealing temperature and pressure. By using double aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, it is revealed that the rejuvenation, which is attributed to coupling effect of high pressure and high temperature, originates from the microstructural change that involves "negative flow units" with a higher atomic packing density compared to that of the elastic matrix of MGs. The results demonstrate that HP annealing is an effective way to rejuvenate MGs into higher energy states, and it may assist in understanding the microstructural origin of the rejuvenation in MGs.

Computational study of atomic mobility in HCP Mg-Al-Zn ternary alloys

The experimental data in the literature for the hcp phase of the Mg-Al-Zn ternary system have been critically reviewed. Based on the concentration profiles from the literature, the diffusion coefficients have been re-extracted using the Hall method for the impurity diffusion, and the Sauer-Freise and the Whittle-Green strategies for interdiffusion coefficients in binary and ternary systems, respectively. Moreover, extra interdiffusion coefficients were obtained from the Darken-type couples, which present relative maxima or/and minima at the concentration profiles. This information was assessed to obtain an atomic mobility database, by means of DICTRA software in conjunction with the CALPHAD thermodynamic description that is able to reproduce the diffusion couple experiments. Comprehensive comparisons between the calculated results and experimental values show an excellent agreement not only for the diffusion coefficient data, but also for the concentration profiles and the diffusion paths.

Landau modeling of dynamical nucleation of martensite at grain boundaries under local stress

The dynamical nucleation of martensite in polycrystals is simulated by means of Lagrange-Rayleigh dynamics with Landau energetics, which is capable of obtaining the local stress as a result of the interplay of the potential of transformation and external loadings. By monitoring the patio-temporal distribution of the strain in response to the local stress, we demonstrate that the postcursors, high angle grain boundaries and triple junctions act as favorable heterogeneous nucleation sites corresponding to different loading and cooling conditions, and predict the phase diagram of the nucleation mode of martensite.

Sunward-propagating Alfvénic fluctuations observed in the heliosphere

The mixture/interaction of anti-sunward-propagating Alfvénic fluctuations (AFs) and sunward-propagating Alfvénic fluctuations (SAFs) is believed to result in the decrease of the Alfvénicity of solar wind fluctuations with increasing heliocentric distance. However, SAFs are rarely observed at 1 au and solar wind AFs are found to be generally outward. Using the measurements from Voyager 2 and Wind, we perform a statistical survey of SAFs in the heliosphere inside 6 au. We first report two SAF events observed by Voyager 2. One is in the anti-sunward magnetic sector with a strong positive correlation between the fluctuations of magnetic field and solar wind velocity. The other one is in the sunward magnetic sector with a strong negative magnetic field-velocity correlation. Statistically, the percentage of SAFs increases gradually with heliocentric distance, from about 2.7% at 1.0 au to about 8.7% at 5.5 au. These results provide new clues for understanding the generation mechanism of SAFs.

Suspending superconducting qubits by silicon micromachining

We present a method for relieving aluminum 3D transmon qubits from a silicon substrate using micromachining. Our technique is a high yield, one-step deep reactive ion etch that requires no additional fabrication processes, and results in the suspension of the junction area and edges of the aluminum film. The drastic change in the device geometry affects both the dielectric and flux noise environment experienced by the qubit. In particular, the participation ratios of various dielectric interfaces are significantly modified, and suspended qubits exhibited longer $T_1$'s than non-suspended ones. We also find that suspension increases the flux noise experienced by tunable SQUID-based qubits.
