Q_EC values of the Superallowed beta Emitters 50Mn and 54Co

Using a new fast cleaning procedure to prepare isomerically pure ion samples, we have measured the beta-decay Q_EC values of the superallowed beta-emitters 50Mn and 54Co to be 7634.48(7) keV and 8244.54(10) keV, respectively, results which differ significantly from the previously accepted values. The corrected Ft values derived from our results strongly support new isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections that lead to a higher value of the up-down quark mixing element, Vud, and improved confirmation of the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.

Precision mass measurements of radioactive nuclei at JYFLTRAP

The Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP was used to measure the atomic masses of radioactive nuclei with an uncertainty better than 10 keV. The atomic masses of the neutron-deficient nuclei around the N = Z line were measured to improve the understanding of the rp-process path and the SbSnTe cycle. Furthermore, the masses of the neutron-rich gallium (Z = 31) to palladium (Z = 46) nuclei have been measured. The physics impacts on the nuclear structure and the r-process paths are reviewed. A better understanding of the nuclear deformation is presented by studying the pairing energy around A = 100.

Direct mass measurements beyond the proton drip-line

First on-line mass measurements were performed at the SHIPTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer. The masses of 18 neutron-deficient isotopes in the terbium-to-thulium region produced in fusion-evaporation reactions were determined with relative uncertainties of about $7\cdot 10^{-8}$, nine of them for the first time. Four nuclides ($^{144, 145}$Ho and $^{147, 148}$Tm) were found to be proton-unbound. The implication of the results on the location of the proton drip-line is discussed by analyzing the one-proton separation energies.

Complete one-loop corrections to decays of charged and CP-even neutral Higgs bosons into sfermions

We present the full one-loop corrections to charged and CP-even neutral Higgs boson decays into sfermions including also the crossed channels. The calculation was carried out in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model and we use the on-shell renormalization scheme. For the down-type sfermions, we use DR-running fermion masses and the trilinear coupling A_f as input. Furthermore, we present the first numerical analysis for decays according to the Supersymmetric Parameter Analysis project. This requires the renormalization of the whole MSSM. The corrections are found to be numerically stable and not negligible.

Checkerboard order in the t--J model on the square lattice

We propose that the inhomogeneous patterns seen by STM in some underdoped superconducting cuprates could be related to a bond-order-wave instability of the staggered flux state, one of the most studied "normal" state proposed to compete with the d-wave RVB superconductor. A checkerboard pattern is obtained by a Gutzwiller renormalized mean-field theory of the t-J model for doping around 1/8. It is found that the charge modulation is always an order of magnitude smaller than the bond-order modulations. This is confirmed by an exact optimization of the wavefunction by a variational Monte Carlo scheme. The numerical estimates of the order parameters are however found to be strongly reduced w.r.t their mean-field values.

The boundary of the Milnor fiber of Hirzebruch surface singularities

We give the first (as far as we know) complete description of the boundary of the Milnor fiber for some non-isolated singular germs of surfaces in ${\bf C}^3$. We study irreducible (i.e. $gcd (m,k,l) = 1$) non-isolated (i.e. $1 \leq k < l$) Hirzebruch hypersurface singularities in ${\bf C}^3$ given by the equation $z^m - x^ky^l = 0$. We show that the boundary $L$ of the Milnor fiber is always a Seifert manifold and we give an explicit description of the Seifert structure. From it, we deduce that : 1) $L$ is never diffeomorphic to the boundary of the normalization. 2) $L$ is a lens space iff $m = 2$ and $k = 1$. 3) When $L$ is not a lens space, it is never orientation preserving diffeomorphic to the boundary of a normal surface singularity.

Full O(alpha) corrections to e+e- -> sf_i sf_j

We present a complete precision analysis of the sfermion pair production process e+e- -> sf_i sf_j (f = t, b, tau, nu_tau) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Our results extend the previously calculated weak corrections by including all one-loop corrections together with higher order QED corrections. We present the details of the analytical calculation and discuss the renormalization scheme. The numerical analysis shows the results for total cross-sections, forward-backward and left-right asymmetries. It is based on the SPS1a' point from the SPA project. The complete corrections are about 10% and have to be taken into account in a high precision analysis.

e+e--pair production in Pb-Au collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon

We present the combined results on electron-pair production in 158 GeV/n {Pb-Au} ($\sqrt{s}$= 17.2 GeV) collisions taken at the CERN SPS in 1995 and 1996, and give a detailed account of the data analysis. The enhancement over the reference of neutral meson decays amounts to a factor of 2.31$\pm0.19 (stat.)\pm0.55 (syst.)\pm0.69 (decays)$ for semi-central collisions (28% $σ/σ_{geo}$) when yields are integrated over $m>$ 200 MeV/$c^2$ in invariant mass. The measured yield, its stronger-than-linear scaling with $N_{ch}$, and the dominance of low pair $p_t$ strongly suggest an interpretation as {\it thermal radiation} from pion annihilation in the hadronic fireball. The shape of the excess centring at $m\approx$ 500 MeV/$c^2$, however, cannot be described without strong medium modifications of the $ρ$ meson. The results are put into perspective by comparison to predictions from Brown-Rho scaling governed by chiral symmetry restoration, and from the spectral-function many-body treatment in which the approach to the phase boundary is less explicit.

Gel Electrophoresis of DNA Knots in Weak and Strong Electric Fields

Gel electrophoresis allows to separate knotted DNA (nicked circular) of equal length according to the knot type. At low electric fields, complex knots being more compact, drift faster than simpler knots. Recent experiments have shown that the drift velocity dependence on the knot type is inverted when changing from low to high electric fields. We present a computer simulation on a lattice of a closed, knotted, charged DNA chain drifting in an external electric field in a topologically restricted medium. Using a simple Monte Carlo algorithm, the dependence of the electrophoretic migration of the DNA molecules on the type of knot and on the electric field intensity was investigated. The results are in qualitative agreement with electrophoretic experiments done under conditions of low and high electric fields: especially the inversion of the behavior from low to high electric field could be reproduced. The knot topology imposes on the problem the constrain of self-avoidance, which is the final cause of the observed behavior in strong electric field.

Complete one--loop corrections to e+e- -> sf_i sf_j

We have calculated the complete one-loop corrections to the sfermion pair production process e+e- -> sf_i sf_j (f = t, b, tau, tau-neutrino) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Our results also include the previously calculated SUSY-QCD corrections. We present the details of the renormalization scheme used. It is found that the weak corrections are of the same magnitude as the SUSY-QCD corrections at higher energies (sqrt(s) ~ 1TeV). At these energies the main part of the weak corrections stems from the box contribution. This is best seen in sneutrino production.

Improved full one-loop corrections to A^0 -> \sf_1 \sf_2 and \sf_2 -> \sf_1 A^0

We calculate the full electroweak one-loop corrections to the decay of the CP-odd Higgs boson A^0 into scalar fermions in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. For this purpose many parameters of the MSSM have to be properly renormalized in the on-shell renormalization scheme. We have also included the SUSY-QCD corrections. For the decay into bottom squarks and tau sleptons, especially for large \tan\b, the corrections can be very large making the perturbation expansion unreliable. We solve this problem by an appropriate definition of the tree-level coupling in terms of running fermion masses and running trilinear couplings A_f. We also discuss the decay of heavy scalar fermions into light scalar fermions and A^0. We find that the corrections can be sizeable and therefore cannot be neglected.

Improved full one--loop corrections to A^0 -> \sq_1 \sq_2 and \sq_2 -> \sq_1 A^0

We calculate the full electroweak one-loop corrections to the decay of the CP-odd Higgs boson A^0 into scalar quarks in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). Due to the complex structure of the electroweak sector a proper renormalization of many parameters in the on-shell renormalization scheme is necessary. For the decay into sbottom quarks, especially for large tanb, the corrections can be very large in the on-shell renormalization scheme, which makes the perturbation series unreliable. We solve this problem by an appropriate definition of the tree-level coupling in terms of running quark masses and running trilinear couplings A_q. We also discuss the decay of heavy scalar quarks into light scalar quarks and A^0. We find that the corrections are significant and therefore cannot be neglected.

Ising transition driven by frustration in a 2D classical model with SU(2) symmetry

We study the thermal properties of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with both nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) exchange couplings on the square lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that, for $J_2/J_1 > 1/2 $, thermal fluctuations give rise to an effective $Z_2$ symmetry leading to a {\it finite-temperature} phase transition. We provide strong numerical evidence that this transition is in the 2D Ising universality class, and that $T_c\to 0$ with an infinite slope when $J_2/J_1\to 1/2$.

Analysis of the chargino and neutralino mass parameters at one-loop level

In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) the masses of the neutralinos and charginos depend on the gaugino and higgsino mass parameters M, M' and $μ$. If supersymmetry is realized, the extraction of these parameters from future high energy experiments will be crucial to test the underlying theory. We present a consistent method how on-shell parameters can be properly defined at one-loop level and how they can be determined from precision measurements. In addition, we show how a GUT relation for the parameters M and M' can be tested at one-loop level. The numerical analysis is based on a complete one-loop calculation. The derived analytic formulae are given in the appendix.

Full electroweak one-loop corrections to A^0 -> \sf_1 \sf_2

We discuss the full electroweak one-loop corrections to the decay of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson A^0 into two sfermions within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In particular, we consider the sfermions of the third generation, stops, sbottoms, and staus, including the left-right mixing. The electroweak corrections can go up to ~15% and can therefore not be neglected.

AC-coupled GaAs microstrip detectors with a new type of integrated bias resistors

Full size single-sided GaAs microstrip detectors with integrated coupling capacitors and bias resistors have been fabricated on 3'' substrate wafers. PECVD deposited SiO_2 and SiO_2/Si_3N_4 layers were used to provide coupling capacitaces of 32.5 pF/cm and 61.6 pF/cm, respectively. The resistors are made of sputtered CERMET using simple lift of technique. The sheet resistivity of 78 kOhm/sq. and the thermal coefficient of resistance of less than 4x10^-3 / degree C satisfy the demands of small area biasing resistors, working on a wide temperature range.
