Refractive index in the JUNO liquid scintillator

In the field of rare event physics, it is common to have huge masses of organic liquid scintillator as detection medium. In particular, they are widely used to study neutrino properties or astrophysical neutrinos. Thanks to its safety properties (such as low toxicity and high flash point) and easy scalability, linear alkyl benzene is the most common solvent used to produce liquid scintillators for large mass experiments. The knowledge of the refractive index is a pivotal point to understand the detector response, as this quantity (and its wavelength dependence) affects the Cherenkov radiation and photon propagation in the medium. In this paper, we report the measurement of the refractive index of the JUNO liquid scintillator between 260-1064 nm performed with two different methods (an ellipsometer and a refractometer), with a sub percent level precision. In addition, we used an interferometer to measure the group velocity in the JUNO liquid scintillator and verify the expected value derived from the refractive index measurements.

On-demand Entanglement Source with Spatial Phase Modulation

The polarization entanglement photon pairs generated from the biexciton cascade decay in a single semiconductor quantum dot is corrupted by the position-dependent (time-dependent) phase difference of the two polarization mode due to the fine structure splitting. We show that, by taking voltage ramping to an electro-optic modulator, such phase-difference can be removed. In our first proposed set-up, two photons are sent to two separate Pockels cell under reverse voltage ramping, as a result, the position-dependent phase difference between the two polarization mode is removed in the outcome state. In our second proposed set-up, the polarization of the first photon is flipped and then both photons fly into the same Pokels cell. Since we only need to separate the two photons rather than separate the two polarization modes, our schemes are robust with respect to fluctuations of the optical paths.

Phase Separation of Bismuth Ferrite into Magnetite under Voltage Stressing

Micro-Raman studies show that under ~700 kV/cm of d.c. voltage stressing for a few seconds, thin-film bismuth ferrite BiFeO3 phase separates into magnetite Fe3O4. No evidence is found spectroscopically of hemite alpha-Fe2O3, maghemite gamma-Fe2O3, or of Bi2O3. This relates to the controversy regarding the magnitude of magnetization in BiFeO3.

Surface morphology, structure and transport property of NaxCoO2 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition

In this paper, we report the growth of NaxCoO2 thin films by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD). It is shown that the concentration of sodium is very sensitive to the substrate temperature and the target-substrate distance due to the evaporation of sodium during the deposition. alpha prime-phase Na0.75CoO2 and gamma- phase Na0.71CoO2 thin films can be obtained with different conditions. Correspondingly, the surface morphology of the films changes from flake-like to particle-like. The temperature dependence of resistivity for the films prepared with the optimal condition shows metallic behavior, consistent with the data of NaxCoO2 single crystals. This work demonstrates that PLD is a promising technique to get high quality NaxCoO2 thin films.

Universal behavior of giant electroresistance in epitaxial La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 thin films

We report a giant resistance drop induced by dc electrical currents in La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 epitaxial thin films. Resistance of the patterned thin films decreases exponentially with increasing current and a maximum drop shows at the temperature of resistance peak Tp. Variation of resistance with current densities can be scaled below and above Tp, respectively. This work can be useful for the future applications of electroresistance.
