Commissioning and Full Realization of the PLASEN System at BRIF

A PLASEN (Precision LAser Spectroscopy for Exotic Nuclei) system, consisting of a compact radio-frequency quadrupole cooler-buncher (RFQ-cb) and a collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy setup, has now been fully commissioned with radioactive ion beams at the Beijing Radioactive Ion-beam Facility (BRIF). Using both stable and radioactive Rb ion beams from BRIF, we demonstrated that the large beam energy spread observed at BRIF has been successfully handled by employing the RFQ-cb, enabling the delivery of high-quality bunched radioactive ion beams for collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy experiments. Under these conditions, we performed laser spectroscopy of exotic nuclei, achieving high resolution (about 100 MHz spectral linewidth) and high sensitivity (up to 1:200 efficiency). This fully operational PLASEN system will serve as a state-of-the-art experimental platform at BRIF for research in multiple fields such as nuclear, atomic and molecular physics.

Development and Characterization of a High-Resolution and High-Sensitivity Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy Setup

With the recent implementation of a radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) cooler-buncher and a multi-step laser resonance ionization technique, our previously developed collinear laser spectroscopy setup has been successfully upgraded into a fully functional collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy system. The new system was fully characterized using a bunched ion beam at 30~keV, during which hyperfine structure spectra of $^{85,87}$Rb isotopes were measured. An overall efficiency exceeding 1:200 (one resonant ion detected for every 200 ions after the RFQ cooler-buncher) was achieved while maintaining a spectral resolution of 100 MHz. Under these conditions, the extracted hyperfine structure parameters and isotope shift for $^{85,87}$Rb show excellent agreement with the literature values. These results demonstrate the system's capability to perform high-resolution and high-sensitivity laser spectroscopy of neutron-rich Rb isotopes, which are expected to be produced at the Beijing Radioactive Ion-beam Facility at a rate of approximately 100 particles per second.

$^{197}$Au($γ,\,xn;\,x\,=\,1\thicksim9$) Reaction Cross Section Measurements using Laser-Driven Ultra-Intense $γ$-Ray Source

We present a new method for the measurements of photonuclear reaction flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric ratios using a laser-driven bremsstrahlung $γ$-ray source. An ultra-bright ultra-fast 60$\,\thicksim\,$250 MeV bremsstrahlung $γ$-ray source was established using the 200 TW laser facility in the Compact Laser Plasma Accelerator Laboratory, Peking University, which could cover the energy range from knocking out neutrons to producing pions. Stable quasi-monoenergetic electron beams were generated via laser wakefield acceleration with a charge of 300$\,\thicksim\,$600 pC per shot. The averaged $γ$-ray intensities ($\geqslant$8 MeV) were higher than 10$^{8}$ per shot and the instantaneous intensities can reach above 10$^{19}$ s$^{-1}$ with a duration time about 6.7 ps. $^{65}$Cu($γ,\,n$)$^{64}$Cu and $^{27}$Al($γ,\,x$)$^{24}$Na reactions were used as $γ$-ray flux monitors in the experiments. The flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric ratios of $^{197}$Au($γ,\,xn;\,x\,=\,1\thicksim9$) reactions were analyzed through activation measurements. The results showed good agreement with previous works and proved this method to be accurate. The $^{197}$Au($γ,\,xn;\,x\,=\,7\thicksim\,9$) reaction cross sections were first achieved with the highest threshold energy of 71.410 MeV. Theoretical cross sections of TALYS 1.9 were calculated to compare with experiment results. This method offered a unique way of gaining insight into photonuclear reaction research, especially for short-lived isomers which extremely lack experimental data.

Construction and commissioning of the collinear laser spectroscopy system at BRIF

We have constructed a collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS) system installed at the Beijing Radioactive Ion-beam Facility (BRIF), aiming to investigate the nuclear properties of unstable nuclei. The first on-line commissioning experiment of this system was performed using the continuous stable ($^{39}$K) and unstable ($^{38}$K) ion beams produced by impinging a 100-MeV proton beam on a CaO target. Hyperfine structure spectra of these two isotopes are reasonably reproduced, and the extracted magnetic dipole hyperfine parameters and isotope shift agree with the literature values. The on-line experiment demonstrates the overall functioning of this CLS system, opening new opportunities for laser spectroscopy measurement of unstable isotopes at BRIF and other radioactive ion beam facilities in China.

Deuterated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Interstellar Medium: The C--D Band Strengths of Multi-Deuterated Species

Observationally, the interstellar gas-phase abundance of deuterium (D) is considerably depleted and the missing D atoms are often postulated to have been locked up into carbonaceous solids and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. An accurate knowledge of the fractional amount of D (relative to H) tied up in carbon dust and PAHs has important cosmological implications since D originated exclusively from the Big Bang and the present-day D abundance, after accounting for the astration it has experienced during the Galactic evolution, provides essential clues to the primordial nucleosynthesis and the cosmological parameters. To quantitatively explore the extent to which PAHs could possibly accommodate the observed D depletion, we have previously quantum-chemically computed the infrared vibrational spectra of mono-deuterated PAHs and derived the mean intrinsic band strengths of the 3.3 $μ$m C--H stretch (A$_{3.3}$) and the 4.4 $μ$m C--D stretch (A$_{4.4}$). Here we extend our previous work to multi-deuterated PAH species of different deuterations, sizes and structures. We find that both the intrinsic band strengths A$_{3.3}$ and A$_{4.4}$ and their ratios A$_{4.4}$/A$_{3.3}$ not only show little variations among PAHs of different deuterations, sizes and structures, they are also closely similar to that of mono-deuterated PAHs. Therefore, a PAH deuteration level (i.e., the fraction of peripheral atoms attached to C atoms in the form of D) of ~2.4% previously estimated from the observed 4.4 $μ$m to 3.3 $μ$m band ratio based on the A$_{4.4}$/A$_{3.3}$ ratio of mono-deuterated PAHs is robust.

New high-spin structure and possible chirality in $^{109}$In

High-spin structure of $^{109}$In has been investigated with the $^{100}$Mo($^{14}$N, 5$n$)$^{109}$In reaction at a beam energy of 78 MeV using the in-beam $γ$ spectroscopic method. The level scheme of $^{109}$In has been modified considerably and extended by 46 new $γ$-rays to the highest excited state at 8.979 MeV and $J^π$=(45/2$^{+}$). The new level scheme consists of eight bands, six of which are identified as dipole bands. The configurations have been tentatively assigned with the help of the systematics of neighboring odd-$A$ indium isotopes and the experimental aligned angular momenta. The dipole bands are then compared with the titled axis cranking calculation in the framework of covariant density function theory (TAC-CDFT). The results of theoretical calculation based on the configurations, which involve one proton hole at the $g_{9/2}$ orbital and two or four unpaired neutrons at $g_{7/2}$, $d_{5/2}$ and $h_{11/2}$ orbitals, show that the shape of $^{109}$In undergoes an evolution on both $β$ and $γ$ deformations and possible chirality is suggested in $^{109}$In.

Identification of a $9/2^-$[505] isomer in the neutron-rich $^{193}$Os nucleus

The neutron rich nucleus $^{193}$Os was produced in the $^{192}$Os($^{7}$Li,$^{6}$Li)$^{193}$Os reaction. An isomeric state based on the $9/2^-$[505] nilsson orbital was identified in the present work. Half-life of the isomeric state was extracted and discussed in terms of the $K$ quantum number. Level scheme built on the isomeric state was proposed based on the experimental data.

Novel Two-dimensional SiC2 Sheet with Full Pentagon Network

We propose a promising two-dimensional nano-sheet of SiC2 (SiC2-pentagon) consisting of tetrahedral silicon atoms and triple-linked carbon atoms in a fully-pentagon network. The SiC2-pentagon with buckled configuration is more favorable than its planar counterpart and previously proposed SiC2-silagraphene with tetra-coordinate silicon atoms; and its dynamical stability is confirmed through phonon analyzing. Buckled SiC2-pentagon is an indirect-band-gap semiconductor with a gap of 1.388 eV. However, its one-dimensional nanoribbons can be metals or semiconductors depending on the edge type, shape, and decoration. Finally, we propose a method to produce the buckled SiC2-pentagon through chemical exfoliation on the beta-SiC(001)-c(2*2) SDB surface.

First-principles study of native point defects in Bi2Se3

Using first-principles method within the framework of the density functional theory, we study the influence of native point defect on the structural and electronic properties of Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Se vacancy in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is a double donor, and Bi vacancy is a triple acceptor. Se antisite (Se$_{Bi}$) is always an active donor in the system because its donor level ($\varepsilon$(+1/0)) enters into the conduction band. Interestingly, Bi antisite(Bi$_{Se1}$) in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is an amphoteric dopant, acting as a donor when $μ$$_e$$<$0.119eV (the material is typical p-type) and as an acceptor when $μ$$_e$$>$0.251eV (the material is typical n-type). The formation energies under different growth environments (such as Bi-rich or Se-rich) indicate that under Se-rich condition, Se$_{Bi}$ is the most stable native defect independent of electron chemical potential $μ$$_e$. Under Bi-rich condition, Se vacancy is the most stable native defect except for under the growth window as $μ$$_e$$>$0.262eV (the material is typical n-type) and $Δ$$μ$$_{Se}$$<$-0.459eV(Bi-rich), under such growth windows one negative charged Bi$_{Se1}$ is the most stable one.

Spectroscopy of Neutron-Rich 168,170Dy: Yrast Band Evolution Close to the NpNn Valence Maximum

The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope 168Dy has been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV 82Se beam and a 170Er target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2+ and 4+ members of the previously measured ground state rotational band of 168Dy have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10+. A tentative candidate for the 4+ to 2+ transition in 170Dy was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of Total Routhian Surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed.

Effect of magnetization process on levitation force between a superconducting disk and a permanent magnet

The levitation forces between a permanent magnet and a coaxial superconducting disk after different magnetization processes are measured. Significant effect of the magnetization process on the levitation force is observed. Theoretical calculations of levitation force based on the critical state model with temperature and field-dependent critical current density, and the heat dissipation due to the flux motion are in perfect agreement with the experimental data.

Trapped field in a superconducting disk magnetized with low swept-down rate of applied field

We have proposed a systematic theoretic framework to calculate the trapped magnetic field and temperature distributions in a superconducting disk (SD) magnetized by a field-cooling process. Our calculations are based on the critical state model with temperature and field-dependent critical current density, and the heat conduction equation with account of the heat produced by flux motion. We distinguish the normal state region from the superconducting state region. Our calculated results are in good agreement with the recently experimental results reported by different groups, and the deviation is well explained.

Magnetic levitation force between a superconducting bulk magnet and a permanent magnet

The current density in a disk-shaped superconducting bulk magnet and the magnetic levitation force exerted on the superconducting bulk magnet by a cylindrical permanent magnet are calculated from first principles. The effect of the superconducting parameters of the superconducting bulk is taken into account by assuming the voltage-current law and the material law. The magnetic levitation force is dominated by the remnant current density, which is induced by switching off the applied magnetizing field. High critical current density and flux creep exponent may increase the magnetic levitation force. Large volume and high aspect ratio of the superconducting bulk can enhance the magnetic levitation force further.
