Interpretable machine-learning identification of the crossover from subradiance to superradiance in an atomic array

Light-matter interacting quantum systems manifest strong correlations that lead to distinct cooperative spontaneous emissions of subradiance or superradiance. To demonstrate the essence of long-range correlations in such systems, we consider an atomic array under the resonant dipole-dipole interactions (RDDI) and apply an interpretable machine learning with the integrated gradients to identify the crossover between the subradiant and superradiant sectors. The machine shows that the next nearest-neighbor couplings in RDDI play as much as the roles of nearest-neighbor ones in determining the whole eigenspectrum within the training sets. Our results present the advantage of machine learning approach with explainable ability to reveal the underlying mechanism of correlations in quantum optical systems, which can be potentially applied to investigate many other strongly interacting quantum many-body systems.

Quantization Phenomena of critical Hamiltonians in 2D systems

This review work addresses the recent advances in solving more comprehensive Hamiltonians. The generalized tight-binding model is developed to investigate the feature-rich quantization phenomena in emergent 2D materials. The mutli-orbital bondings, the spin-orbital interactions, the various geometric structures, and the external fields are taken into consideration simultaneously. Specifically, the IV-group layered systems, black phosphorus and MoS$_{2}$ exhibit the unique magnetic quantization. This is clearly indicated in three kinds of Landau levels (LLs), the orbital-, spin- and valley-dependent LL groups, the abnormal LL energy spectra, and the splitting, crossing and anticrossing behaviors. A detailed comparison with the effective-mass model is made. Some theoretical predictions have been confirmed by the experimental measurements.

Soft X-ray irradiance measured by the Solar Aspect Monitor on the Solar Dynamic Observatory Extreme ultraviolet Variability Experiment

The Solar Aspect Monitor (SAM) is a pinhole camera on the Extreme-ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). SAM projects the solar disk onto the CCD through a metallic filter designed to allow only solar photons shortward of 7 nm to pass. Contamination from energetic particles and out-of-band irradiance is, however, significant in the SAM observations. We present a technique for isolating the 0.01--7 nm integrated irradiance from the SAM signal to produce the first results of broadband irradiance for the time period from May 2010 to May 2014. The results of this analysis agree with a similar data product from EVE's EUV SpectroPhotometer (ESP) to within 25%. We compare our results with measurements from the Student Nitric Oxide Explorer (SNOE) Solar X-ray Photometer (SXP) and the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) Solar EUV Experiment (SEE) at similar levels of solar activity. We show that the full-disk SAM broadband results compare well to the other measurements of the 0.01--7 nm irradiance. We also explore SAM's capability toward resolving spatial contribution from regions of solar disk in irradiance and demonstrate this feature with a case study of several strong flares that erupted from active regions on March 11, 2011.

Beyond-limit light focusing in the intermediate zone

We experimentally demonstrate that a new nanolens of designed plasmonic subwavelength aperture can focus light to a single-line with its width beyond the diffraction limit that sets the smallest achievable line width at half the wavelength. The measurements indicate that the effect of the near-field on the light focused is negligible in the intermediate zone of 2 < kr < 4 where the line-width is smaller than the limit. Thus, as a verification of theoretical prediction, the fields focused are radiative and with a momentum capable of propagating to the far zone as concerned by the limit.

Development and Application of a Diaphragm Micro-Pump with Piezoelectric Device

In this study, a new type of thin, compact, and light weighed diaphragm micro-pump has been successfully developed to actuate the liquid by the vibration of a diaphragm. The micro-diaphragm pump with two valves is fabricated in an aluminum case by using highly accurate CNC machine, and the cross-section dimension is 5mm x 8mm. Both valves and diaphragm are manufactured from PDMS. The amplitude of vibration by a piezoelectric device produces an oscillating flow which may change the chamber volume by changing the curvature of a diaphragm. Several experimental set-ups for performance test in a single micro-diaphragm pump, isothermal flow open system, and a closed liquid cooling system is designed and implemented. The performance of one-side actuating micro-diaphragm pump is affected by the design of check valves, diaphragm, piezoelectric device, chamber volume, input voltage and frequency. The measured maximum flow rate of present design is 72 ml/min at zero total pump head in the range of operation frequency 70-180 Hz.
