The color gradients of spiral disks in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We investigate the radial color gradients of galactic disks using a sample of about 20,000 face-on spiral galaxies selected from the fourth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR4). We combine galaxies with similar concentration, size and luminosity to construct composite galaxies, and then measure their color profiles by stacking the azimuthally averaged radial color profiles of all the member galaxies. Except for the smallest galaxies (R_{50}<3 kpc), almost all galaxies show negative disk color gradients with mean g-r gradient G_{gr}=-0.006 mag kpc^{-1} and r-z gradient G_{rz}=-0.018 mag kpc^{-1}. The disk color gradients are independent of the morphological types of galaxies and strongly dependent on the disk surface brightness μ_{d}, with lower surface brightness galactic disks having steeper color gradients. We quantify the intrinsic correlation between color gradients and surface brightness as G_{gr}=-0.011μ_{d}+0.233 and G_{rz}=-0.015μ_{d}+0.324. These quantified correlations provide tight observational constraints on the formation and evolution models of spiral galaxies.

X-Ray Spectral Variability in Initial Rise of XTE J1550-564

X-ray variability of the microquasar XTE J1550-564 is studied with time domain techniques for the data from the RXTE/PCA observation in September 8, 1998. The 2--60 keV averaged shot is obtained from superposing shots with one millisecond time bin through aligning their peaks. The spectral behavior during the averaged shot exhibits prominent differences from that observed in Cyg X-1. The hardness ratio of (13--60 keV)/(2--13 keV) or (16--60 keV)/(13--16 keV) during a shot is lower or higher than that of steady emission respectively. The correlation coefficient between intensity and hardness ratio of (13--60 keV)/(2--13 keV) or (16--60 keV)/(13--16 keV) is negative or positive respectively. These results may indicate that physical processes in the low state of XTE J1550-564 are different from those in Cyg X-1.

X-Ray Spectral Variability in Cygnus X-1

Spectral variability in different energy bands of X-rays from Cyg X-1 in different states is studied with RXTE observations and time domain approaches. In the hard tail of energy spectrum above $\sim 10$ keV, average peak aligned shots are softer than the average steady emission and the hardness ratio decreases when the flux increases during a shot for all states. In regard to a soft band lower $\sim 10$ keV, the hardness in the soft state varies in an opposite way: it peaks when the flux of the shot peaks. For the hard and transition states, the hardness ratio in respect to a soft band during a shot is in general lower than that of the steady component and a sharp rise is observed at about the shot peak. For the soft state, the correlation coefficient between the intensity and hardness ratio in the hard tail is negative and decreases monotonically as the timescale increases from 0.01 s to 50 s, which is opposite to that in regard to a soft band. For the hard and transition states, the correlation coefficients are in general negative and have a trend of decrease with increasing timescale.
