Observation of $Ω(2012)^- \to Ξ(1530)\bar{K}$ and measurement of the effective couplings of $Ω(2012)^-$ to $Ξ(1530)\bar{K}$ and $Ξ\bar{K}$

Using $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$, and $Υ(3S)$ data collected by the Belle detector, we discover a new three-body decay, $Ω(2012)^-\toΞ(1530)\bar K\toΞπ\bar K$, with a significance of 5.2~$σ$. The mass of the $Ω(2012)^-$ is $(2012.5\pm0.7\pm0.5)$ MeV and its effective couplings to $Ξ(1530)\bar{K}$ and $Ξ\bar{K}$ are $(39^{+31}_{-39}\pm9)\times10^{-2}$ and $(1.7\pm0.3\pm0.3)\times10^{-2}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The ratio of the branching fraction for the three-body decay to that for the two-body decay to $Ξ\bar{K}$ is $0.99\pm0.26\pm0.06$, assuming isospin symmetry.

Impact of the interference between the resonance and continuum amplitudes on vector quarkonia decay branching fraction measurements

The measurement of the branching fraction of a heavy quarkonium decaying into light hadronic final state at $e^+e^-$ colliders is revisited. In $e^+e^-$ annihilation experiments, background contributions from the continuum amplitude and its interference with the resonance amplitude are irreducible. These effects become more and more significant as the precision of experimental measurements improves. While the former can be easily subtracted with data taken off the resonance peak, the latter depends on the relative size and phase between the resonance and continuum amplitudes. Two ratios are defined to estimate the size of these effects, $r_{R}^{f}$ for the ratio of the contribution of the interference term to the resonance term and $r_{c}^{f}$ for that to the continuum term. We find that $r_{R}^{f}$ could be as large as a few percent for narrow resonances, and both $r_{R}^{f}$ and $r_{c}^{f}$ could be large for broad resonances. This indicates that the interference effect is crucial for the measurements of the branching fractions aiming at the percent level or better precision and needs to be measured or estimated properly.

Physics in the tau-charm Region at BESIII

The Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII) collaboration uses $e^+e^-$ collisions in the tau-charm energy region to study a broad spectrum of topics. These include studies of light mesons and light baryons, studies of charmonium, including exotic mesons and baryons containing charmonium, studies of charmed mesons and baryons, studies of QCD and tau physics, as well as searches for new physics. The following is a Snowmass white paper that outlines the BESIII accomplishments and potential in each of these areas.

Observation of a vector charmoniumlike state in $e^+e^- \to D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c.$

Using a data sample of 921.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector, we study the process of $e^+e^-\to D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c.$ via initial-state radiation. We report the first observation of a vector charmoniumlike state decaying to $D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c.$ with a significance of 5.9$σ$, including the systematic uncertainties. The measured mass and width are $(4625.9^{+6.2}_{-6.0}({\rm stat.})\pm0.4({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}/c^{2}$ and $(49.8^{+13.9}_{-11.5}({\rm stat.})\pm4.0({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The product of the $e^+e^-\to D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c.$ cross section and the branching fraction of $D_{s1}(2536)^-\to{\bar D}^{*0}K^-$ is measured from the $D_s \bar{D}_{s1}(2536)$ threshold to 5.59~GeV.

Observation of $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0χ_{b1,2}(1P)$ and search for $e^+e^-\toϕχ_{b1,2}(1P)$ at $\sqrt{s}=$10.96---11.05 GeV

We report searches for the processes $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0χ_{bJ}$ and $e^+e^-\toϕχ_{bJ}$ (J=1,2) based on data samples collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB collider. We report the first observation of the process $e^+e^-\to (π^+π^-π^0)_{\rm non-ω}χ_{b1}$ and first evidence for $e^+e^-\toωχ_{bJ}$ in the vicinity of the $Υ(11020)$ resonance, with center-of-mass energies from 10.96 to 11.05~GeV. The significances for $(π^+π^-π^0)_{\rm non-ω}χ_{b1}$ and $ωχ_{bJ}$ are greater than $5.3σ$ and $4.0σ$, respectively. We also investigate the energy dependence of the $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0χ_{bJ}$ cross section, but we cannot determine whether the contributions are from the $Υ(10860)$ and $Υ(11020)$ resonances or non-resonant continuum processes. The signals for $e^+e^-\to ϕχ_{bJ}$ are not significant, and the upper limits of the Born cross sections at the 90\% confidence level are $0.7$ and $1.0$~pb for $e^+e^-\to ϕχ_{b1}$ and $ϕχ_{b2}$, respectively, for center-of-mass energies from 10.96 to 11.05~GeV.

First measurements of absolute branching fractions of $Ξ_c^0$ at Belle

We present the first measurements of absolute branching fractions of $Ξ_c^0$ decays into $Ξ^- π^+$, $ΛK^- π^+$, and $p K^- K^- π^+$ final states. The measurements are made using a data set comprising $(772\pm 11)\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We first measure the absolute branching fraction for $B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0$ using a missing-mass technique; the result is ${\cal B}(B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0) = (9.51 \pm 2.10 \pm 0.88) \times 10^{-4}$. We subsequently measure the product branching fractions ${\cal B}(B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0){\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+)$, ${\cal B}( B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0) {\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK^- π^+)$, and ${\cal B}( B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0) {\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to p K^- K^- π^+)$ with improved precision. Dividing these product branching fractions by the result for $B^- \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^0$ yields the following branching fractions: ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+)= (1.80 \pm 0.50 \pm 0.14)\%$, ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK^- π^+)=(1.17 \pm 0.37 \pm 0.09)\%$, and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to p K^- K^- π^+)=(0.58 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.05)\%.$ For the above branching fractions, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Our result for ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+)$ can be combined with $Ξ_c^0$ branching fractions measured relative to $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+$ to yield other absolute $Ξ_c^0$ branching fractions.

Observation of $e^+e^- \to γχ_{c1}$ and search for $e^+e^- \to γχ_{c0}, γχ_{c2},$ and $γη_c$ at $\sqrt{s}$ near 10.6 GeV at Belle

Using data samples of 89.5~fb$^{-1}$, 711.0~fb$^{-1}$, and 121.4~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at center-of-mass energies 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.867 GeV, respectively, we study the exclusive reactions $e^+e^-\toγχ_{cJ}$ ($J = 0,~1,~2$) and $e^+e^-\toγη_c$. A significant $γχ_{c1}$ signal is observed for the first time at $\sqrt{s}=10.58$ GeV with a significance of $5.1σ$ including systematic uncertainties. No significant excesses for $γχ_{c0}$, $γχ_{c2}$, and $γη_c$ final states are found, and we set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the Born cross sections ($σ_{\rm B}$) at 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.867~GeV. Together with cross sections measured by BESIII at lower center-of-mass energies, the energy dependency of $σ_{\rm B}(e^+e^-\toγχ_{c1})$ is obtained.

Search for $Υ(1S,2S) \to Z^{+}_{c}Z^{(\prime) -}_{c}$ and $e^{+}e^{-} \to Z^{+}_{c}Z^{(\prime) -}_{c}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.52, 10.58, and 10.867 GeV

The first search for $Z_{c}$ pair production in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays and in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.52, 10.58, and 10.867 GeV is conducted using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. No significant signals are observed in any of the studied modes, and the 90\% credibility level upper limits on their product branching fractions in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays (${\cal B}(Υ(1S,2S)\to Z^{+}_{c}Z^{(\prime) -}_{c})\times{\cal B}(Z^{+}_{c}\toπ^{+}+c\bar c)$ ($c\bar c=J/ψ$, $χ_{c1}(1P)$, $ψ(2S)$)) and the product of Born cross section and branching fraction for $e^{+}e^{-} \to Z^{+}_{c}Z^{(\prime) -}_{c}$ ($σ(e^+e^- \to Z^{+}_{c}Z^{(\prime) -}_{c})\times {\cal B}(Z^{+}_{c} \to π^+ +c\bar c)$) at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.52, 10.58, and 10.867 GeV are determined. Here, $Z_{c}$ refers to the $Z_{c}(3900)$ and $Z_{c}(4200)$ observed in the $πJ/ψ$ final state, the $Z_{c1}(4050)$ and $Z_{c2}(4250)$ in the $πχ_{c1}(1P)$ state, and the $Z_{c}(4050)$ and $Z_{c}(4430)$ in the $πψ(2S)$ state.

Search for light tetraquark states in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

We search for the $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ and $1^{+-}$ light tetraquark states with masses up to 2.46~GeV/$c^2$ in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays with data samples of $(102\pm 2)$ million and $(158\pm 4)$ million events, respectively, collected with the Belle detector. No significant signals are observed in any of the studied production modes, and 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their branching fractions in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays are obtained. The inclusive branching fractions of the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays into final states with $f_1(1285)$ are measured to be ${\cal B}(Υ(1S)\to f_1(1285)+anything)=(46\pm28({\rm stat.})\pm13({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(Υ(2S)\to f_1(1285)+anything)=(22\pm15({\rm stat.})\pm6.3({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$. The measured $χ_{b2} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fraction is measured to be $(1.50\pm0.34({\rm stat.})\pm0.22({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-3}$, and 90\% C.L. upper limits for the $χ_{b0,b1} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fractions are found to be $2.3\times 10^{-3}$ and $1.1\times 10^{-3}$, respectively. For ${\cal B}(χ_{b1} \to ω+ anything)$, the branching fraction is measured to be $(4.9\pm1.3({\rm stat.})\pm0.6({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-2}$. %($<3.68\times 10^{-2}$ at 90\% C.L.). All results reported here are the first measurements for these modes.

Resonant parameters of the $Y(4220)$

The vector charmoniumlike state $Y(4220)$ was reported recently in the cross sections of $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c0}$, $π^+π^-h_c$, $π^+π^- J/ψ$, and $D^0 D^{*-}π^+ + c.c.$ measured by the BESIII experiment. A combined fit is performed to the cross sections of these four final states to extract the resonant parameters of the $Y(4220)$. We determine a mass $M=(4219.6\pm 3.3\pm 5.1)$~MeV/$c^2$ and a total width $Γ=(56.0\pm 3.6\pm 6.9)$~MeV for the $Y(4220)$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. Assuming the $Y(4220)$ decays dominantly to the above four modes and their isospin symmetric modes, we also estimate its leptonic decay width and decay branching fractions. These information is essential for the understanding of the nature of this state.

Search for the $0^{--}$ Glueball in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

We report the first search for the $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ glueball in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays with data samples of $(102\pm2)$ million and $(158\pm4)$ million events, respectively, collected with the Belle detector. The inclusive branching fractions of the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays into final states with a $χ_{c1}$ are measured to be $\BR(Υ(1S)\to χ_{c1}+ anything) = (1.90\pm 0.43(stat.)\pm 0.14(syst.))\times 10^{-4}$ with an improved precision over prior measurements and $\BR(Υ(2S)\to χ_{c1}+ anything) = (2.24\pm 0.44(stat.)\pm 0.20(syst.))\times 10^{-4}$ for the first time.

Measurement of $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ via Initial State Radiation at Belle

We report measurement of the cross section of $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ between 4.0 and $5.5 {\rm GeV}$, based on an analysis of initial state radiation events in a $980 \rm fb^{-1}$ data sample recorded with the Belle detector. The properties of the $Y(4360)$ and $Y(4660)$ states are determined. Fitting the mass spectrum of $π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ with two coherent Breit-Wigner functions, we find two solutions with identical mass and width but different couplings to electron-positron pairs: $M_{Y(4360)} = (4347\pm 6\pm 3) {\rm MeV}/c^2$, $Γ_{Y(4360)} = (103\pm 9\pm 5) {\rm MeV}$, $M_{Y(4660)} = (4652\pm10\pm 8) {\rm MeV}/c^2$, $Γ_{Y(4660)} = (68\pm 11\pm 1) \rm MeV$; and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (10.9\pm 0.6\pm 0.7) \rm eV$ and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (8.1\pm 1.1\pm 0.5) \rm eV$ for one solution; or ${\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (9.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.6) \rm eV$ and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (2.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.2) \rm eV$ for the other. Here, the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Evidence for a charged charmoniumlike structure at $4.05 {\rm GeV}/c^2$ is observed in the $π^{\pm}ψ(2S)$ intermediate state in the $Y(4360)$ decays.

Search for $XYZ$ states in $Υ(1S)$ inclusive decays

The branching fractions of the $Υ(1S)$ inclusive decays into final states with a $J/ψ$ or a $ψ(2S)$ are measured with improved precision to be $\BR(Υ(1S)\to J/ψ+ {\rm anything})=(5.25\pm 0.13(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 0.25(\mathrm{syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$ and $\BR(Υ(1S)\to ψ(2S) + {\rm anything})=(1.23\pm 0.17(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$. The first search for $Υ(1S)$ decays into $XYZ$ states that decay into a $J/ψ$ or a $ψ(2S)$ plus one or two charged tracks yields no significant signals for $XYZ$ states in any of the examined decay modes, and upper limits on their production rates in $Υ(1S)$ inclusive decays are determined.

First observation of $γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and search for exotic baryons in $pK$ systems

The process $γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and its intermediate processes are measured for the first time using a 980~fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The production of $p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and a $Λ(1520)^0~(\barΛ(1520)^0)$ signal in the $pK^-$~($\bar{p} K^+$) invariant mass spectrum are clearly observed. However, no evidence for an exotic baryon near 1540~MeV/$c^2$, denoted as $Θ(1540)^0$~($\barΘ~(1540)^0$) or $Θ(1540)^{++}$~($Θ(1540)^{--}$), is seen in the $p K^-$~($\bar{p}K^+$) or $pK^+$~($\bar{p} K^-$) invariant mass spectra. Cross sections for $γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$, $Λ(1520)^0 \bar{p} K^+ +c.c.$ and the products $σ(γγ\to Θ(1540)^0 \bar{p} K^+ +c.c.)\BR(Θ(1540)^0 \to p K^{-})$ and $σ(γγ\to Θ(1540)^{++} \bar{p} K^- +c.c.)\BR(Θ(1540)^{++}\to p K^{+})$ are measured. We also determine upper limits on the products of the $χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c2}$ two-photon decay widths and their branching fractions to $p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ at the 90\% credibility level.

Determination of the relative phase in ψ' and J/ψ decays into baryon and antibaryon

With the recent measurements of psi' and J/psi decay into octet-baryon pairs, we study the relative phase between the strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes, and find a large phase by fitting the present data. The fits take into account the details of experimental effects, including energy spread and initial state radiation. We also predict some branching fractions of psi' decays and the continuum production rates at the J/psi mass based on the relative phase and absolute amplitudes obtained from the fits.

Measurement of $e^+e^- \to γχ_{cJ}$ via initial state radiation at Belle

The process $e^+e^- \to γχ_{cJ}$ ($J$=1, 2) is studied via initial state radiation using 980 fb$^{-1}$ of data at and around the $Υ(nS)$ ($n$=1, 2, 3, 4, 5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. No significant signal is observed except from $ψ(2S)$ decays. Observation of $e^+e^- \to π^+ π^- π^0 χ_{bJ}$ and search for $X_b \to ωΥ(1S)$ at $\sqrt{s}\sim 10.867$ GeV

The $e^+e^- \to π^+ π^- π^0 χ_{bJ}$ ($J=0,~1,~2$) processes are studied using a 118~fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.867 GeV, in the $Υ(10860)$ energy range, with the Belle detector. The $π^+ π^- π^0 χ_{b1}$, $π^+π^-π^0χ_{b2}$, $ωχ_{b1}$ signals and the evidence of $ωχ_{b2}$ are observed for the first time and the cross sections are measured. No significant $π^+π^-π^0χ_{b0}$ or $ωχ_{b0}$ signal is observed and 90\% confidence level upper limits on the cross sections for these two processes are obtained.
