An FPGA-based Data Aggregator for the New ATLAS ITK Pixel DCS

The upcoming ATLAS Phase II upgrade mandates replacing the tracking system with the all-silicon Inner Tracker (ITK), featuring a pixel detector as its core element. The monitoring data of the new system will be aggregated from an on-detector ASIC, Monitoring Of Pixel System (MOPS), and channeled to the Detector Control System (DCS) via a newly developed FPGA-based interface known as MOPS-Hub. The mitigation strategies for addressing potential Single-Event Upset (SEU) issues in the new system, along with the proton irradiation results, are presented.

System Integration of ATLAS ITK Pixel DCS ASICs

During the ATLAS phase II upgrade, the tracking system of the ATLAS experiment will be replaced by an all-silicon detector called the inner tracker (ITK) with a pixel detector as the most inner part. The monitoring data of the new system will be aggregated from an on-detector ASIC called Monitoring Of Pixel System (MOPS) and sent to the Detector Control System(DCS) using a new interface called MOPS-HUB. The hardware components of the MOPS-HUB, firmware specifications for the FPGA of MOPS-HUB and its integration plan will be presented. In addition, an irradiation plan for the new system will be introduced.

Analysis of Testbeam Data of the Highly Granular RPC-Steel CALICE Digital Hadron Calorimeter and Validation of Geant4 Monte Carlo Models

We present a study of the response of the highly granular Digital Hadronic Calorimeter with steel absorbers, the Fe-DHCAL, to positrons, muons, and pions with momenta ranging from 2 to 60 GeV/c. Developed in the context of the CALICE collaboration, this hadron calorimeter utilises Resistive Plate Chambers as active media, interspersed with steel absorber plates. With a transverse granularity of $1\,\times\,1\,$cm$^{2}$ and a longitudinal segmentation of 38 layers, the calorimeter counted 350,208 readout channels, each read out with single-bit resolution (digital readout). The data were recorded in the Fermilab test beam in 2010-11. The analysis includes measurements of the calorimeter response and the energy resolution to positrons and muons, as well as detailed studies of various shower shape quantities. The results are compared to simulations based on Geant4, which utilise different electromagnetic and hadronic physics lists.

Relative luminosity measurement of the LHC with the ATLAS forward calorimeter

In this paper it is shown that a measurement of the relative luminosity changes at the LHC may be obtained by analysing the currents drawn from the high voltage power supplies of the electromagnetic section of the forward calorimeter of the ATLAS detector. The method was verified with a reproduction of a small section of the ATLAS forward calorimeter using proton beams of known beam energies and variable intensities at the U-70 accelerator at IHEP in Protvino, Russia. The experimental setup and the data taking during a test beam run in April 2008 are described in detail. A comparison of the measured high voltage currents with reference measurements from beam intensity monitors shows a linear dependence on the beam intensity. The non-linearities are measured to be less than 0.5 % combining statistical and systematic uncertainties.

MGGPOD: A Monte Carlo Suite for Gamma Ray Astronomy -- Version 1.1

We announce the forthcoming public release of Version 1.1 of MGGPOD, a user-friendly suite of Monte Carlo codes built around the widely used GEANT (Version 3.21) package. MGGPOD is capable of simulating ab initio the physical processes relevant for the production of instrumental backgrounds. These processes include the build-up and delayed decay of radioactive isotopes as well as the prompt de-excitation of excited nuclei, both of which give rise to a plethora of instrumental gamma-ray background lines in addition to continuum backgrounds. A detailed qualitative and quantitative understanding of instrumental backgrounds is crucial for most stages of high-energy astronomy missions. Improvements implemented in Version 1.1 of the proven MGGPOD Monte Carlo suite include: additional beam geometry options, the capability of modelling polarized photons, additional output formats suitable e.g. for event reconstruction algorithms, improved neutron interaction cross sections, and improved treatment of the radioactive decay of isomeric nuclear states. The MGGPOD package and documentation are publicly available for download from http://sigma-2.cesr.fr/spi/MGGPOD/.

Hadronic Calibration of the ATLAS Liquid Argon End-Cap Calorimeter in the Pseudorapidity Region 1.6 < |eta| < 1.8 in Beam Tests

A full azimuthal phi-wedge of the ATLAS liquid argon end-cap calorimeter has been exposed to beams of electrons, muons and pions in the energy range 6 GeV <= E <= 200 GeV at the CERN SPS. The angular region studied corresponds to the ATLAS impact position around the pseudorapidity interval 1.6 < |eta| < 1.8. The beam test set-up is described. A detailed study of the performance is given as well as the related intercalibration constants obtained. Following the ATLAS hadronic calibration proposal, a first study of the hadron calibration using a weighting ansatz is presented. The results are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo simulations, based on GEANT 3 and GEANT 4 models.
