Impact of the Meissner effect on magnetic micro traps for neutral atoms near superconducting thin films

We theoretically evaluate changes in the magnetic potential arising from the magnetic field near superconducting thin films. An example of an atom chip based on a three-wire configuration has been simulated in the superconducting and the normal conducting state. Inhomogeneous current densities within the superconducting wires were calculated using an energy-minimization routine based on the London theory. The Meissner effect causes changes to both trap position and oscillation frequencies at short distances from the superconducting surface. Superconducting wires produce much shallower micro traps than normal conducting wires. The results presented in this paper demonstrate the importance of taking the Meissner effect into account when designing and carrying out experiments on magnetically trapped neutral atoms near superconducting surfaces.

Meissner effect in superconducting microtraps

We report on the realization and characterization of a magnetic microtrap for ultra cold atoms near a straight superconducting Nb wire with circular cross section. The trapped atoms are used to probe the magnetic field outside the superconducting wire. The Meissner effect shortens the distance between the trap and the wire, reduces the radial magnetic-field gradients and lowers the trap depth. Measurements of the trap position reveal a complete exclusion of the magnetic field from the superconducting wire for temperatures lower than 6K. As the temperature is further increased, the magnetic field partially penetrates the superconducting wire; hence the microtrap position is shifted towards the position expected for a normal-conducting wire.

In situ Ramsey Interferometry and Diffraction Echo with an Ultracold Fermi Gas

We report on the first observation of Bragg scattering of an ultracold $^6$Li Fermi gas. We demonstrate a Ramsey-type matter-wave interferometer based on Bragg diffraction and find robust signatures of persistent matter wave coherences using an echo pulse sequence. Because of the Pauli principle, the diffracted fermions oscillate nearly unperturbed in the trapping potential for long times beyond 2 s. This suggests extremely long coherence times. On these timescales, only the presence of a $^{87}$Rb cloud seems sufficient to induce noticeable perturbations.

Feshbach resonances in mixtures of ultracold $^6$Li and $^{87}$Rb gases

We report on the observation of two Feshbach resonances in collisions between ultracold $^6$Li and $^{87}$Rb atoms in their respective hyperfine ground states $|F,m_F>=|1/2,1/2>$ and $|1,1>$. The resonances show up as trap losses for the $^6$Li cloud induced by inelastic Li-Rb-Rb three-body collisions. The magnetic field values where they occur represent important benchmarks for an accurate determination of the interspecies interaction potentials. A broad Feshbach resonance located at 1066.92 G opens interesting prospects for the creation of ultracold heteronuclear molecules. We furthermore observe a strong enhancement of the narrow p-wave Feshbach resonance in collisions of $^6$Li atoms at 158.55 G in the presence of a dense $^{87}$Rb cloud. The effect of the $^{87}$Rb cloud is to introduce Li-Li-Rb three-body collisions occurring at a higher rate than Li-Li-Li collisions.

Ultracold Thermalization of $^7$Li and $^{87}$Rb

We report on measurements of cross-species thermalization inside a magnetically trapped spin-polarized mixture of $^{87}$Rb and $^7$Li atoms with both atoms in their respective low field seeking magnetic substates $|F=2,m_F=2\right>$. Measurement of the thermalization velocity in the ultracold regime below $10 μ$K allows for the derivation of the absolute value of the pure triplet s-wave scattering length governing the interaction. We find $|a_{7,87}|=(59\pm19) a_{\rm B}$. We propose to study both species in the condensed regime to derive the sign of $a_{7,87}$. In this context, we present numerical solutions to the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation based on the hypothesis of a positive sign. According to the simulations, phase separation of the Li and Rb $|2,2\right>$ clouds occurs along with a mean-field stabilization allowing for larger atom numbers of condensed $^7$Li atoms before collapse sets in. Observation of this mean-field stabilization would directly fix the sign of $a_{7,87}$. We discuss our results in the light of this proposal.

Phase coherent splitting of Bose-Einstein condensates with an integrated magnetic grating

We report the phase coherent splitting of Bose-Einstein condensates by means of a phase grating produced near the surface of a micro-electronic chip. A lattice potential with a period of $4μ$m is generated by the superposition of static and oscillating magnetic fields. Precise control of the diffraction is achieved by controlling the currents in the integrated conductors. The interference of overlapping diffraction orders is observed after 8ms of propagation in a harmonic trap and subsequent ballistic expansion of the atomic ensemble. By analyzing the interference pattern we show a reproducible phase relation between the diffraction orders with an uncertainty given by the resolution of the diffraction grating.

Calibration of a single atom detector for atomic micro chips

We experimentally investigate a scheme for detecting single atoms magnetically trapped on an atom chip. The detector is based on the photoionization of atoms and the subsequent detection of the generated ions. We describe the characterization of the ion detector with emphasis on its calibration via the correlation of ions with simultaneously generated electrons. A detection efficiency of 47.8% (+-2.6%) is measured, which is useful for single atom detection, and close to the limit allowing atom counting with sub-Poissonian uncertainty.

Spatially resolved photo ionization of ultracold atoms on an atom chip

We report on photo ionization of ultracold magnetically trapped Rb atoms on an atom chip. The atoms are trapped at 5 $μ$K in a strongly anisotropic trap. Through a hole in the chip with a diameter of 150 $μ$m two laser beams are focussed onto a fraction of the atomic cloud. A first laser beam with a wavelength of 778 nm excites the atoms via a two photon transition to the 5D level. With a fiber laser at 1080 nm the excited atoms are photo ionized. Ionization leads to depletion of the atomic density distribution observed by absorption imaging. The resonant ionization spectrum is reported. The setup used in this experiment is not only suitable to investigate BEC ion mixtures but also single atom detection on an atom chip.

Controlling mode locking in optical ring cavities

Imperfections in the surface of intracavity elements of an optical ring resonator can scatter light from one mode into the counterpropagating mode. The phase-locking of the cavity modes induced by this backscattering is a well-known example that notoriously afflicts laser gyroscopes and similar active systems. We experimentally show how backscattering can be circumvented in a unidirectionally operated ring cavity either by an appropriate choice of the resonant cavity mode or by active feedback control.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering in a ring cavity

Collective interaction of light with an atomic gas can give rise to superradiant instabilities. We experimentally study the sudden build-up of a reverse light field in a laser-driven high-finesse ring cavity filled with ultracold thermal or condensed atoms. While superradiant Rayleigh scattering from atomic clouds is normally only observed at very low temperatures (i.e. well below $1 μ$K), the presence of the ring cavity enhances cooperativity and allows for superradiance with thermal clouds as hot as several $10 μ$K. A characterization of the superradiance at various temperatures and cooperativity parameters allows us to link it to the collective atomic recoil laser.

Atom counting in ultra-cold gases using photoionisation and ion detection

We analyse photoionisation and ion detection as a means of accurately counting ultra-cold atoms. We show that it is possible to count clouds containing many thousands of atoms with accuracies better than $N^{-1/2}$ with current technology. This allows the direct probing of sub-Poissonian number statistics of atomic samples. The scheme can also be used for efficient single atom detection with high spatio-temporal resolution. All aspects of a realistic detection scheme are considered, and we discuss experimental situations in which such a scheme could be implemented.

Highly versatile atomic micro traps generated by multifrequency magnetic field modulation

We propose the realization of custom-designed adiabatic potentials for cold atoms based on multimode radio frequency radiation in combination with static inhomogeneous magnetic fields. For example, the use of radio frequency combs gives rise to periodic potentials acting as gratings for cold atoms. In strong magnetic field gradients the lattice constant can be well below 1 micrometer. By changing the frequencies of the comb in time the gratings can easily be propagated in space, which may prove useful for Bragg scattering atomic matter waves. Furthermore, almost arbitrarily shaped potential are possible such as disordered potentials on a scale of several 100 nm or lattices with a spatially varying lattice constant. The potentials can be made state selective and, in the case of atomic mixtures, also species selective. This opens new perspectives for generating tailored quantum systems based on ultra cold single atoms or degenerate atomic and molecular quantum gases.

Creating and probing long-range order in atomic clouds

Ultracold atoms interacting with the optical modes of a high-Q optical ring cavity can synchronize their motion. The collective behavior makes the system interesting for quantum computing applications. This paper is devoted to the study of the collective coupling. We report on the first observation of a collective dynamics and on the realization of a laser, the gain mechanism of which is based on collective atomic recoil. We show that, if the atoms are subject to a friction force, starting from an unordered distribution they spontaneously form a moving density grating. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a 1D atomic density grating can be probed via Bragg scattering. By heterodyning the Bragg-reflected light with a reference beam, we obtain detailed information on phase shifts induced by the Bragg scattering process.

Multiple Reflections and Diffuse Scattering in Bragg Scattering at Optical Lattices

We study Bragg scattering at 1D atomic lattices. Cold atoms are confined by optical dipole forces at the antinodes of a standing wave generated inside a laser-driven cavity. The atoms arrange themselves into an array of lens-shaped layers located at the antinodes of the standing wave. Light incident on this array at a well-defined angle is partially Bragg-reflected. We measure reflectivities as high as 30%. In contrast to a previous experiment devoted to the thin grating limit [S. Slama, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 193901 (2005)] we now investigate the thick grating limit characterized by multiple reflections of the light beam between the atomic layers. In principle multiple reflections give rise to a photonic stop band, which manifests itself in the Bragg diffraction spectra as asymmetries and minima due to destructive interference between different reflection paths. We show that close to resonance however disorder favors diffuse scattering, hinders coherent multiple scattering and impedes the characteristic suppression of spontaneous emission inside a photonic band gap.

Nuclear Charge Radius of Li-9, Li-11: Halo Neutron: the influence of Halo Neutrons

The nuclear charge radius of Li-11 has been determined for the first time by high precision laser spectroscopy. On-line measurements at TRIUMF-ISAC yielded a Li-7 - Li-11 isotope shift (IS) of 25101.23(13) MHz for the Doppler-free 2s - 3s transition. IS precision for all other bound Li isotopes was also improved. Differences from calculated mass-based IS yield values for change in charge radius along the isotope chain. The charge radius decreases monotonically from Li-6 to Li-9, and then increases from 2.217(35) fm to 2.467(37) fm for Li-11. This is compared to various models, and it is found that a combination of halo neutron correlation and intrinsic core excitation best reproduces the experimental results.

Quantum-degenerate mixture of fermionic lithium and bosonic rubidium gases

We report on the observation of sympathetic cooling of a cloud of fermionic 6-Li atoms which are thermally coupled to evaporatively cooled bosonic 87-Rb. Using this technique we obtain a mixture of quantum-degenerate gases, where the Rb cloud is colder than the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation and the Li cloud colder than the Fermi temperature. From measurements of the thermalization velocity we estimate the interspecies s-wave triplet scattering length |a_s|=20_{-6}^{+9} a_B. We found that the presence of residual rubidium atoms in the |2,1> and the |1,-1> Zeeman substates gives rise to important losses due to inelastic collisions.

Combined chips for atom-optics

We present experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates on a combined atom chip. The combined structure consists of a large-scale "carrier chip" and smaller "atom-optics chips", containing micron-sized elements. This allows us to work with condensates very close to chip surfaces without suffering from fragmentation or losses due to thermally driven spin flips. Precise three-dimensional positioning and transport with constant trap frequencies are described. Bose-Einstein condensates were manipulated with submicron accuracy above atom-optics chips. As an application of atom chips, a direction sensitive magnetic field microscope is demonstrated.

Diffraction of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a Magnetic Lattice on a Micro Chip

We experimentally study the diffraction of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a magnetic lattice, realized by a set of 372 parallel gold conductors which are micro fabricated on a silicon substrate. The conductors generate a periodic potential for the atoms with a lattice constant of 4 microns. After exposing the condensate to the lattice for several milliseconds we observe diffraction up to 5th order by standard time of flight imaging techniques. The experimental data can be quantitatively interpreted with a simple phase imprinting model. The demonstrated diffraction grating offers promising perspectives for the construction of an integrated atom interferometer.
