Chameleon Dark Energy

Chameleons are scalar fields whose mass depends on the environment, specifically on the ambient matter density. While nearly massless in the cosmos, where the matter density is tiny, their mass is of order of an inverse millimeter on Earth, where the density is high. In this note, we review how chameleons can satisfy current experimental constraints on deviations from General Relativity (GR). Moreover, we study the cosmological evolution with a chameleon field and show the existence of an attractor solution, akin to the tracker solution in quintessence models. We discuss how chameleons can naturally drive the observed acceleration of the universe

Is the radion a chameleon?

The chameleon mechanism is a way to give an effective mass to a light scalar field via field self-interaction and interaction with matter. We study this mechanism in models in which the couplings are field dependent and find that the properties are very different from the case of constant couplings. The consequence of a runaway potential for the radion field in brane world scenarios and whether the radion can play the role of dark energy is investigated. The cosmological evolution during the inflationary epoch, the radiation and the matter dominated epochs are discussed as is the compatibility of the radion field with local tests of gravity.

Cosmological Perturbations During Radion Stabilization

We consider the evolution of cosmological perturbations during radion stabilization, which we assume to happen after a period of inflation in the early universe. Concentrating on the Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario, we find that if matter is present both on the positive and negative tension branes, the coupling of the radion to matter fields could have significant impact on the evolution of the curvature perturbation and on the production of entropy perturbations. We investigate both the case of a long-lived and short-lived radion and outline similarities and differences to the curvaton scenario.

On the spherical collapse model in dark energy cosmologies

We study the spherical collapse model in dark energy cosmologies, in which dark energy is modelled as a minimally coupled scalar field. We first follow the standard assumption that dark energy does not cluster on the scales of interest. Investigating four different popular potentials in detail, we show that the predictions of the spherical collapse model depend on the potential used. We also investigate the dependence on the initial conditions. Secondly, we investigate in how far perturbations in the quintessence field affect the predictions of the spherical collapse model. In doing so, we assume that the field collapses along with the dark matter. Although the field is still subdominant at the time of virialisation, the predictions are different from the case of a homogeneous dark energy component. This will in particular be true if the field is non--minimally coupled. We conclude that a better understanding of the evolution of dark energy in the highly non--linear regime is needed in order to make predictions using the spherical collapse model in models with dark energy.

Boundary Inflation in the Moduli Space Approximation

The evolution of slow--roll inflation in a five--dimensional brane world model with two boundary branes and bulk scalar field is studied. Assuming that the inflationary scale is below the brane tension, we can employ the moduli space approximation to study the dynamics of the system. Detuning the brane tension results in a potential for the moduli fields which we show will not support a period of slow--roll inflation. We then study an inflaton field, confined to the positive tension brane, to which the moduli fields are non--minimally coupled. We discuss in detail the two cases of $V(χ) = {1/2} m^2 χ^2$ and $V(χ) = λχ^4$ and demonstrate that increasing the coupling results in spectra which are further away from scale--invariance and in an increase in the tensor mode production, while entropy perturbations are subdominant. Finally, we point out that the five--dimensional spacetime is unstable during inflation because the negative tension brane collapses.

Inflationary Dynamics with Runaway Potentials

The evolution of two slow--rolling scalar fields with potentials of the form $V=V_0 ϕ^{-α}\exp(-βϕ^m)$ is studied. Considering different values of the parameters $α$, $β$ and $m$, we derive several new inflationary solutions in which one fields just evolves in the background and is not important for the inflationary dynamics. In addition, we find new solutions where both fields are dynamically important during inflation. Moreover, we discuss the evolution of perturbations in both scalar fields and the spacetime metric, concentrating on the production of entropy perturbations. We find that for a large region in parameter space and initial conditions tensor modes are negligible and that adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations are essentially uncorrelated.

Gauge Coupling Variation in Brane Models

We consider the space-time variation of gauge couplings in brane-world models induced by the coupling to a bulk scalar field. A variation is generated by the running of the gauge couplings with energy and a conformal anomaly while going from the Jordan to the Einstein frame. We indicate that the one-loop corrections cancel implying that one obtains a variation of the fine structure constant by either directly coupling the gauge fields to the bulk scalar field or having bulk scalar field dependent Yukawa couplings. Taking into account the cosmological dynamics of the bulk scalar field, we constrain the strength of the gauge coupling dependence on the bulk scalar field and relate it to modifications of gravity at low energy.

Branes at low energy

Brane models at low energy are described by an effective action involving gravity and two moduli fields associated with the brane positions. The scalar-tensor nature of the effective theory and the coupling to matter are explicitly spelt out. We discuss the post-Newtonian gravitational constraints on the models, some applications to quintessence and the variations of constants.

Brane World Moduli and the CMB

The evolution of moduli fields, which naturally appear in higher dimensional models such as brane worlds, and their effects on the anisotropies of the cosmological microwave background radiation is discussed.

CMB Anisotropies in the Presence of Extra Dimensions

We discuss the effect of the time evolution of extra dimensions on CMB anisotropies and large-scale structure formation. We study the impact of scalar fields in a low-energy effective description of a general class of brane world models on the temperature anisotropy power spectrum. We show that when the coupling between these scalar fields and matter evolves over cosmological timescales, current observations of the CMB anisotropies can constrain primordial values of the fields in a manner complementary to local, late-time tests of gravity. We also present the effect of these fields on the polarization anisotropy spectra and the growth of large-scale structure, showing that future CMB observations will constrain theories of the Universe involving extra dimensions even further.

Cosmological Evolution of Brane World Moduli

We study cosmological consequences of non-constant brane world moduli in five dimensional brane world models with bulk scalars and two boundary branes. We focus on the case where the brane tension is an exponential function of the bulk scalar field, $U_b \propto \exp{(αϕ)}$. In the limit $α\to 0$, the model reduces to the two-brane model of Randall-Sundrum, whereas larger values of $α$ allow for a less warped bulk geometry. Using the moduli space approximation, we derive the four-dimensional low-energy effective action from a supergravity-inspired five-dimensional theory. For arbitrary values of $α$, the resulting theory has the form of a bi-scalar-tensor theory. We show that, in order to be consistent with local gravitational observations, $α$ has to be small (less than $10^{-2}$) and the separation of the branes must be large. We study the cosmological evolution of the interbrane distance and the bulk scalar field for different matter contents on each branes. Our findings indicate that attractor solutions exist which drive the moduli fields towards values consistent with observations. The efficiency of the attractor mechanism crucially depends on the matter content on each branes. In the five-dimensional description, the attractors correspond to the motion of the negative tension brane towards a bulk singularity, which signals the eventual breakdown of the four-dimensional description and the necessity of a better understanding of the bulk singularity.

Varying Constants in Brane World Scenarios

Higher-dimensional theories imply that some constants, such as the gravitational constant and the strength of the gauge-couplings, are not fundamental constants. Instead they are related to the sizes of the extra--dimensional space, which are moduli fields in the four--dimensional effective theory. We study the cosmological evolution of the moduli fields appearing in brane world scenarios and discuss the implications for varying constants.

Suppression of Entropy Perturbations in Multi--Field Inflation on the Brane

At energies higher than the brane tension, the dynamics of a scalar field rolling down a potential are modified relative to the predictions of General Relativity. The modifications imply, among other things, that steeper potentials can be used to drive an epoch of slow--roll inflation. We investigate the evolution of entropy and adiabatic modes during inflation driven by two scalar fields confined on the brane. We show that the amount of entropy perturbations produced during inflation is suppressed compared to the predictions made by General Relativity. As a consequence, the initial conditions do not matter in multiple field inflation in brane worlds if inflation is driven at energies much higher than the brane tension.

Four--dimensional Gravity from Singular Spaces

The modification to four--dimensional Einstein gravity at low energy in two brane models is investigated within supergravity in singular spaces. Using perturbation theory around a static BPS background, we study the effective four--dimensional gravitational theory, a scalar--tensor theory, and derive the Brans--Dicke parameter when matter is present on the positive tension brane only. We show there is an attractor mechanism towards general relativity in the matter dominated era. The dynamics of the interbrane distance are discussed. Finally, when matter lives on both branes, we find that there is a violation of the equivalence principle whose magnitude is governed by the warping of the extra dimension.

Wave function of the radion with a bulk scalar field

The behaviour of the distance between two branes (the `radion') in a braneworld model with a bulk scalar field is investigated. We show that the BPS conditions of supergravity ensure that the dynamics of the scalar field and the radion are not independent; we derive the four-dimensional effective action, showing that the effective theory is of scalar--tensor nature, coupling the radion to four-dimensional gravity.

Brane-World Cosmology, Bulk Scalars and Perturbations

We investigate aspects of cosmology in brane world theories with a bulk scalar field. We concentrate on a recent model motivated from supergravity in singular spaces. After discussing the background evolution of such a brane-world, we present the evolution of the density contrast. We compare our results to those obtained in the (second) Randall-Sundrum scenario and usual 4D scalar-tensor theories.

Cosmological Perturbations in Brane Worlds: Brane Bending and Anisotropic Stresses

Using a metric-based formalism to treat cosmological perturbations, we discuss the connection between anisotropic stress on the brane and brane bending. First we discuss gauge-transformations, and draw our attention to gauges, in which the brane-positions remain unperturbed. We provide a unique gauge, where perturbations both on the brane and in the bulk can be treated with generality. For vanishing anisotropic stresses on the brane, this gauge reduces to the generalized longitudinal gauge. We further comment on the gravitational interaction between the branes and the bulk.
