Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Production in Association with a W Boson at CDF

We present a search for standard model Higgs boson production in association with a W boson in proton-antiproton collisions ($p\bar{p}\to W^\pm H \to \ellνb\bar{b}$) at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The search employs data collected with the CDF II detector which correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1 fb-1. We select events consistent with a signature of a single lepton ($e^\pm/μ^\pm$), missing transverse energy, and two jets. Jets corresponding to bottom quarks are identified with a secondary vertex tagging method and a neural network filter technique. The observed number of events and the dijet mass distributions are consistent with the standard model background expectations, and we set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio ranging from 3.9 to 1.3 pb for Higgs boson masses from 110 to 150 GeV/c2, respectively.

Search for Bs --> mu+mu- and Bd --> mu+mu- Decays with 2fb-1 of ppbar Collisions

We have performed a search for Bs-->mu+mu- and Bd-->mu+mu- decays in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96TeV using 2fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The observed number of Bs and Bd candidates is consistent with background expectations. The resulting upper limits on the branching fractions are B(Bs-->mu+mu-) < 5.8X10^-8 and B(Bd-->mu+mu-) < 1.8X10^-8 at 95% C.L.

First Measurement of the Production of a W Boson in Association with a Single Charm Quark in Proton Anti-proton Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

We present the first measurement of the production cross section of a W boson with a single charm quark (c) in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, using soft muon tagging of c jets. In a data sample of ~1.8 fb-1, recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we select events with W+1 or 2 jets. We use the charge correlation between the W and the muon from the semileptonic decay of a charm hadron to extract the Wc signal. We measure sigma_{Wc}(p_{Tc}>20 GeV/c, |η_c|<1.5)\times BR(W->\ellν) = 9.8+/-3.2 pb, in agreement with theoretical expectations.

Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons

We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed as B^+ \to J/ψK^+, J/ψ\to μ^+ μ^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 π^+, \bar{D}^0 \to K^+ π^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1}) = 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.

Search for the Higgs boson in events with missing transverse energy and b quark jets produced in proton-antiproton collisions at s**(1/2)=1.96 TeV

We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with an electroweak vector boson in events with no identified charged leptons, large imbalance in transverse momentum, and two jets where at least one contains a secondary vertex consistent with the decay of b hadrons. We use ~1 fb-1 integrated luminosity of proton-antiproton collisions at s**(1/2)=1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron. We find 268 (16) single (double) b-tagged candidate events, where 248 +/- 43 (14.4 +/- 2.7) are expected from standard model background processes. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section for several Higgs boson masses ranging from 110 GeV/c2 to 140 GeV/c2. For a mass of 115 GeV/c2 the observed (expected) limit is 20.4 (14.2) times the standard model prediction.

First Measurement of ZZ Production in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

We report the first measurement of the cross section for Z boson pair production at a hadron collider. This result is based on a data sample corresponding to 1.9 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In the llll channel, we observe three ZZ candidates with an expected background of 0.096^{+0.092}_{-0.063} events. In the llnunu channel, we use a leading-order calculation of the relative ZZ and WW event probabilities to discriminate between signal and background. In the combination of llll and llnunu channels, we observe an excess of events with a probability of $5.1\times 10^{-6}$ to be due to the expected background. This corresponds to a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. The measured cross section is sigma(ppbar -> ZZ) = 1.4^{+0.7}_{-0.6} (stat.+syst.) pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.

Measurement of Ratios of Fragmentation Fractions for Bottom Hadrons in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

This paper describes the first measurement of b-quark fragmentation fractions into bottom hadrons in Run II of the Tevatron Collider at Fermilab. The result is based on a 360 pb-1 sample of data collected with the CDF II detector in p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. Semileptonic decays of B0, B+, and B_s mesons, as well as Lambda_b baryons, are reconstructed. For an effective bottom hadron p_T threshold of 7 GeV/c, the fragmentation fractions are measured to be f_u/f_d=1.054 +/- 0.018 (stat) +0.025-0.045(sys) +/- 0.058 (Br), f_s/(f_u+f_d)=0.160 +/- 0.005 (stat) +0.011-0.010 (sys) +0.057-0.034 (Br), and f_{Lambda_b}/(f_u+f_d)=0.281\pm0.012 (stat) +0.058-0.056 (sys) +0.128-0.086 (Br), where the uncertainty (Br) is due to uncertainties on measured branching ratios. The value of f_s/(f_u+f_d) agrees within one standard deviation with previous CDF measurements and the world average of this quantity, which is dominated by LEP measurements. However, the ratio f_{Lambda_b}/(f_u+f_d) is approximately twice the value previously measured at LEP. The approximately 2 sigma discrepancy is examined in terms of kinematic differences between the two production environments.

Search for Heavy Top-like Quarks t' -> Wq Using Lepton Plus Jets Events in 1.96 TeV Proton-Antiproton Collisions

We present the results of a search for pair production of a new heavy top-like quark t' decaying to a W boson and another quark using the CDF II detector in Run II of the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. Using a data sample corresponding to 760 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity, we fit the observed spectrum of total transverse energy and reconstructed t' quark mass to a combination of standard model processes and t' pair production. We see no evidence for t' pair production, and we infer a lower limit of 256 GeV/c^2 on the mass of the t' at 95% C.L. assuming standard strong couplings for the t'.

Observation of Exclusive Dijet Production at the Fermilab Tevatron p-pbar Collider

We present the first observation and cross section measurement of exclusive dijet production in pbar-p interactions, pbar + p --> pbar + dijet + p. Using a data sample of 310 pb-1 collected by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, exclusive cross sections for events with two jets of transverse energy ET >= 10 GeV have been measured as a function of minimum ET(jet). The exclusive signal is extracted from fits to data distributions based on Monte Carlo simulations of expected dijet signal and background shapes. The simulated background distribution shapes are checked in a study of a largely independent data sample of 200 pb-1 of b-tagged jet events, where exclusive dijet production is expected to be suppressed by the Jz=0 total angular momentum selection rule. Results obtained are compared with theoretical expectations, and implications for exclusive Higgs boson production at the pp Large Hadron Collider at sqrt{s}=14 TeV are discussed.

Search for chargino-neutralino production in p-pbar collisions at 1.96 TeV with high pT leptons

We present a search for the associated production of charginos and neutralinos in p-pbar collisions at 1.96 TeV. The data were collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) and correspond to integrated luminosities between 0.7 and 1.0 fb-1. We look for final states with one high pT electron or muon, and two additional leptons. Our results are consistent with the standard model expectations, and we set limits on the cross section as a function of the chargino mass in three different supersymmetric scenarios. For a specific MSSM scenario with no slepton mixing we set a 95 % C.L. limit at 151 GeV/c^2.

Search for New Heavy Particles Decaying to Z^0 Z^0 -> eeee in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

We report the results of a search for the anomalous production of a massive particle decaying to four electrons via two Z^0 bosons in 1.1 fb^{-1} of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab. We employ optimized electron identification criteria to maximize acceptance and efficiency. We estimate the backgrounds in the invariant mass range 500 - 1000 GeV/c^2 to be 0.028 +/- 0.009 (stat) +/- 0.011 (syst) events. We observe zero events in this search region. Assuming a Randall-Sundrum graviton production model, we set 95% CL limits on σtimes BF(G -> Z^0 Z^0) < 4 - 6 pb, depending on the graviton mass.

A direct Measurement of the W Boson Width in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

A direct measurement of the total decay width of the W boson G_W is presented using 350 pb-1 of data from ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The width is determined by normalizing predicted signal and background distributions to 230185 W candidates decaying to enu and munu in the transverse-mass region 50 < M_T < 90 GeV and then fitting the predicted shape to 6055 events in the high-M_T region, 90 < M_T < 200 GeV. The result is G_W = 2032 +/- 45 (stat.) +/- 57 (syst.) MeV, consistent with the standard model expectation.

First Flavor-Tagged Determination of Bounds on Mixing-Induced CP Violation in Bs -> J/psi phi Decays

This Letter describes the first determination of bounds on the CP-violation parameter 2*beta_s using Bs decays in which the flavor of the bottom meson at production is identified. The result is based on approximately 2,000 Bs -> J/psi phi decays reconstructed in a 1.35 fb-1 data sample collected with the CDF II detector using p-bar p collisions produced at the Fermilab Tevatron. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of 2*beta_s and the decay-width difference Delta-Gamma. Assuming the standard model predictions of 2*beta_s and Delta-Gamma, the probability of a deviation as large as the level of the observed data is 15%, corresponding to 1.5 Gaussian standard deviations. Dedicated to the memory of our dear friend and colleague, Michael P. Schmidt.

Evidence for D0-D0bar mixing using the CDF II Detector

We measure the time dependence of the ratio of decay rates for the rare decay D0->K+pi- to the Cabibbo-favored decay D0->K-pi+. We use a signal of 12.7 x10^3 D0->K+pi decays with proper decay times between 0.75 and 10 mean D0 lifetimes. The data sample was recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.5 fb-1 of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. We search for D0-D0bar mixing and measure the mixing parameters to be Rd = (3.04 +/- 0.55) x10^{-3}, y' = (8.5 +/- 7.6) x10^{-3}, and x'^2 = (-0.12 +/- 0.35) x10^{-3}. We report Bayesian probability contours in the x'^2-y' plane and find that the data are inconsistent with the no-mixing hypothesis with a probability equivalent to 3.8 Gaussian standard deviations.

The $B_c^{\pm}$ meson is observed through the decay $B_c^{\pm} \to J/ψπ^{\pm}$, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.4 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A signal of $108\pm15$ candidates is observed, with a significance that exceeds $8 σ$. The mass of the $B_c^{\pm}$ meson is measured to be 6275.6 $\pm$ 2.9 (stat.) $\pm$ 2.5 (syst.) MeV/$c^2$.

Polarizations of J/psi and psi(2S) Mesons Produced in ppbar Collisions at 1.96 TeV

We have measured the polarizations of $\jpsi$ and $\psiprime$ mesons as functions of their transverse momentum $\pt$ when they are produced promptly in the rapidity range $|y|<0.6$ with $\pt \geq 5 \pgev$. The analysis is performed using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of about $800 \ipb$ collected by the CDF II detector. For both vector mesons, we find that the polarizations become increasingly longitudinal as $\pt$ increases from 5 to $30 \pgev$. These results are compared to the predictions of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics and other contemporary models. The effective polarizations of $\jpsi$ and $\psiprime$ mesons from $B$-hadron decays are also reported.

First Observation of Heavy Baryons Σ_b and Σ_b^*

We report an observation of new bottom baryons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. Using 1.1 fb^{-1} of data collected by the CDF II detector, we observe four Λ_b^0π^{\pm} resonances in the fully reconstructed decay mode Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ π^-, where Λ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+. We interpret these states as the Σ_b^{(*)\pm} baryons and measure the following masses: m_{Σ_b^+} = 5807.8^{+2.0}_{-2.2}(stat.) \pm 1.7(syst.) MeV/c^2, m_{Σ_b^-} = 5815.2 \pm 1.0(stat.) \pm 1.7(syst.) MeV/c^2, and m(Σ_b^*) - m(Σ_b) = 21.2^{+2.0}_{-1.9}(stat.) ^{+0.4}_{-0.3}(syst.) MeV/c^2.
