Observation of the jet diffusion wake using dijets in heavy ion collisions

Energetic quarks and gluons traversing a hot and dense quark-gluon plasma deposit energy and momentum into the medium before hadronizing to collimated sprays of particles, known as jets. This energy-momentum deposition is expected to produce medium responses, collectively known as jet wakes, with ``diffusion wake'' denoting a depletion of particles in the direction opposite to the propagating jet. The diffusion wake is studied by comparing dijet-hadron correlations measured in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions. The analysis uses PbPb and pp data recorded at a nucleon-nucleon (NN) center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. By exploring how the dijet-hadron correlation distributions differ for various pseudorapidity separations of the two jets in the dijet, the presence of a jet diffusion wake is firmly established. The diffusion wake signal has a significance greater than 5 standard deviations for charged particles in the transverse momentum range 1 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 2 GeV. The measurements are compared with various model predictions with and without jet wake effects, providing new insights into quark-gluon plasma properties and the formation of jet-induced wakes.

Search for Higgs boson pair production in the $\mathrm{b\bar{b}WW}$ decay channel with two leptons in the final state using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

A search for Higgs boson pair production is presented, targeting final states where one Higgs boson decays to a pair of bottom quarks and the other Higgs boson decays to two W bosons, both of which decay leptonically, to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. For the first time, the search is conducted with proton-proton collision data from the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector in 2022 and 2023 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 62 fb$^{-1}$. The results are consistent with the standard model predictions. An upper limit of 12.0 times the standard model prediction at 95% confidence level is set on the Higgs boson pair production cross section, with an expected limit of 18.5. The results are also used to constrain the strength of the trilinear self-coupling of the Higgs boson, as well as of the quartic coupling between two Higgs bosons and two vector bosons.

Combined measurements and interpretations of Higgs boson production and decay in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Combined measurements of Higgs boson production and decay rates are reported, representing the most comprehensive study performed by the CMS Collaboration to date. The included analyses use proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The statistical combination is based on analyses that measure the following decay channels: H $\to$ $γγ$, H $\to$ ZZ, H $\to$ WW, H $\to$ $ττ$, H $\to$ bb, H $\to$ $μμ$, and H $\to$ Z$γ$. Information in the events from each decay channel is used to target multiple Higgs boson production processes. Searches for invisible Higgs boson decays are also considered, as well as an analysis that measures off-shell Higgs boson production in the H $\to$ ZZ $\to$ 4$\ell$ ($\ell$ = e, $μ$) decay channel. The best fit inclusive signal yield is measured to be 1.014 $^{+0.055}_{-0.053}$ times the standard model expectation, for a Higgs boson mass of 125.38 GeV. Measurements in kinematic regions defined by the simplified template cross section framework are also provided, as well as interpretations in the coupling modifier and standard model effective field theory frameworks. The coupling modifier interpretation is further used to place constraints on various two-Higgs-doublet models. The results show good compatibility with the standard model predictions for the majority of the measured parameters.

Search for a new resonance decaying to a Higgs boson and a scalar boson in events with two b jets and two Z bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is performed for a new resonance X decaying into a Higgs boson and a new scalar boson Y (HY) including the case where Y is assumed to be a second Higgs boson (HH), using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. This study performs a comprehensive exploitation of the bbZZ events, encompassing the following decay topologies. One H candidate is identified through its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair, while the other H or the Y candidate is selected through its decay into a pair of Z bosons. One Z boson is required to decay leptonically and the other, to decay into a pair of quarks or neutrinos. Events of interest are categorized based on the Lorentz boosts of the hadronically decaying H and Z bosons. Machine-learning-based discriminants, together with the reconstructed resonance mass, are employed across the different categories to separate signal from backgrounds, and their corresponding distributions are included in a simultaneous fit. No significant deviations from the standard model predictions are observed. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the HY and HH production cross sections. For HY production, the upper limit on the cross section pp $\to$ X $\to$ HY $\to$ bbZZ ranges from 500 to 5 fb, with the most stringent constraints achieved for high-mass X resonances and Y masses near the threshold for decay into a pair of massive vector bosons. This is comparable to the sensitivity achieved in other analyses, which focus on H decays to $γγ$ or $ττ$ and Y decays into a pair of bottom quarks or massive vector bosons. For resonant HH production, the upper limit on the cross section of pp $\to$ X $\to$ HH production is 1 pb for a high-mass resonance.

Search for a resonance in events with four top quarks decaying into two leptons and jets in proton-proton collisions

A search for a heavy resonance in events containing four top quarks is presented and interpreted in models featuring a new vector, scalar, or pseudoscalar boson that interacts exclusively with top quarks. Proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at centre-of-mass energies of 13 and 13.6 TeV are analysed, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 138 and 35 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. Events with two leptons (electrons or muons) and jets are selected. The mass of the heavy resonance is reconstructed from a pair of jets that are formed using a variable-radius jet clustering algorithm. A machine-learning approach is used to identify whether these jets originate from top quarks that decay fully hadronically. The dominant background from misidentified jets is estimated from data as a function of the dijet invariant mass. No significant excess is observed in data. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the resonance production cross section for resonance masses between 500 GeV and 4 TeV, and relative widths ranging from 4 to 50%. In the vector-mediator benchmark, resonances with 50% relative width are excluded up to masses of 850 GeV, with an expected exclusion limit of 1000 GeV. This is the first dedicated search for these models in the two lepton channel.

Search for resonant production of lepton-enriched semivisible jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This search targets the resonant production of lepton-enriched semivisible jets (SVJs) from a strongly coupled dark sector, using 138 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. Two scenarios are investigated: jets enriched in all lepton flavors (SVJ$\ell$ signature) and jets predominantly enriched in tau leptons (SVJ$τ$ signature). The analysis focuses on final states in which the missing transverse momentum is aligned with jets containing nonisolated leptons. A dual machine-learning strategy is employed, using a graph neural network for jet identification and a fully connected neural network that combines jet- and event-level information to enhance signal sensitivity and background estimation. The signal models assume a heavy Z' mediator with a benchmark coupling of 0.25 to standard model quarks, together with prompt decays of unstable dark hadrons. In the SVJ$\ell$ scenario, mediator masses up to 4.7 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, while masses between 1.8 and 3.5 TeV are excluded in the SVJ$τ$ scenario. These results provide the first experimental constraints on lepton-enriched semivisible jets.

Search for heavy resonances decaying into two Higgs bosons in the $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}τ^+τ^-$ final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for massive narrow-width resonances in the mass range of 1$-$4.5 TeV, decaying into pairs of Higgs bosons (HH). The search uses proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC during 2016$-$2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis targets final states where one Higgs boson decays into a pair of bottom quarks and the other into a pair of tau leptons, X $\to$ HH $\to$ $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}τ^+τ^-$. It uses a single large radius jet to reconstruct the H $\to$ $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$ decay, while the H $\to$ $τ^+τ^-$ decay products can either be contained within a single large radius jet or appear as two isolated tau leptons. The observed data are consistent with standard model background expectations. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section for resonant HH production for masses between 1 and 4.5 TeV. This analysis sets the most sensitive limits to date on X $\to$ HH $\to$ $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}τ^+τ^-$ decays in the mass range of 1.4 to 4.5 TeV.

Search for a top-philic Z' boson decaying into a $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ pair in a final state with jets and an electron or muon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

A search for a top-philic Z' boson in a final state with jets and an electron or muon is presented. The search is based on a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016$-$2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The top-philic Z' boson is produced in association with a top-antitop quark pair ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) and decays into a $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ pair, as it couples exclusively to top quarks. The analysis aims to identify a heavy Z' boson that produces Lorentz-boosted top quarks, whose hadronic decay products are merged into large-radius jets. A machine-learning algorithm is employed to identify such jets. The distribution of the invariant mass of the two top quark candidates with the highest transverse momentum is used as the discriminant variable in a Z' boson mass range of 0.5$-$3 TeV, with intrinsic widths of 4, 10, 20, and 50% relative to its mass. The results obtained are found to be in agreement with the standard model background prediction. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section of the Z' boson, for each of the decay widths as a function of its mass. These results represent the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of a top-philic Z' boson.

Combination of vector boson scattering measurements in leptonic final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A statistical combination of vector boson scattering measurements in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The analysis is based on a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the CMS detector in 2016$-$2018. Events are selected to contain two vector bosons, with at least one decaying leptonically, and at least two additional jets with a high invariant mass and a large pseudorapidity separation. Signal rates are extracted for same-sign WW, opposite-sign WW, as well as for WZ and ZZ channels, and are compared with the standard model predictions. The combination provides a global view of vector boson scattering by simultaneously constraining all channels in a coherent framework, improving sensitivity beyond individual inputs, with all results in agreement with the standard model predictions. In addition, a charge-separated measurement is performed in which W bosons are distinguished according to their electric charge, allowing sensitivity to the production charge asymmetry.

Search for Higgs boson production at high transverse momentum in the WW decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for Higgs boson (H) production at high transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) in the WW decay channel is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016$-$2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The visible decay products of the Higgs boson are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet with one isolated lepton or none (1$\ell$ and 0$\ell$, respectively; $\ell$ = e, $μ$). The H-candidate jets are identified using an advanced transformer-based algorithm and are calibrated with the Lund jet plane reweighting technique. The 1$\ell$ channel is further split into gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with hadronically decaying vector boson categories, while the 0$\ell$ channel considers all production processes inclusively. The measured cross section times the H $\to$ WW branching fraction relative to the standard model expectation is $μ$ = $-$0.19 $^{+0.48}_{-0.46}$, indicating no evidence of a signal above the background. This measurement represents the first dedicated study of highly Lorentz-boosted H $\to$ WW decays, complementing earlier searches for high-$p_\mathrm{T}$ Higgs boson in other decay channels.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the diphoton decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the diphoton decay channel is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set recorded with the CMS detector between 2016 and 2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. A refined detector calibration and new analysis techniques are employed to improve the precision of the results compared to earlier measurements. The Higgs boson mass is measured to be $m_\mathrm{H}$ = 125.13 $\pm$ 0.15 GeV = 125.13 $\pm$ 0.10 (stat) $\pm$ 0.12 (syst) GeV. In addition, a combination with the mass measurement at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV in the diphoton final state is performed resulting in $m_\mathrm{H}$ = 125.06 $\pm$ 0.14 GeV = 125.06 $\pm$ 0.09 (stat) $\pm$ 0.11 (syst) GeV.

Measurement of the fragmentation properties of jets containing $Υ$(nS) mesons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the fragmentation properties of jets containing $Υ$(nS) mesons using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, is presented. The $Υ$(nS) mesons associated with jets are reconstructed via their decays producing pairs of oppositely charged muons. The longitudinal and transverse projections of the momenta of the $Υ$(nS) mesons along the momenta of the corresponding jets are studied. The results are compared with Monte Carlo predictions, including recent developments in the modelling of quarkonia production in parton showers. The description of the data by these Monte Carlo predictions is found to be unsatisfactory, leaving room for improvements in the modelling of such processes.

Search for exotic Higgs boson decays H $\to$ $\mathcal{AA}$ with $\mathcal{AA}$ $\to$ $γγ$ in events with a semi-merged topology in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for exotic Higgs boson decays H $\to$ $\mathcal{AA}$, with $\mathcal{A}$ $\to$ $γγ$ is presented, using events with a semi-merged topology. One of the hypothetical particles, $\mathcal{A}$, is assumed to decay promptly into a semi-merged diphoton system reconstructed as a single photon-like object, while the other $\mathcal{A}$ decays into two resolved photons. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The data agree with the standard model background expectation. Upper limits are set on the product of the Higgs boson production cross section and the branching fraction, $σ$(pp $\to$ H) $\mathcal{B}$(H $\to$ $\mathcal{AA}$ $\to$ 4$γ$), which range from 0.264 to 0.005 pb at 95% confidence level, for $\mathcal{A}$ masses in the range 1 $\lt$ $m_\mathcal{A}$ $\lt$ 15 GeV. These limits are the most stringent to date in the 1$-$5 GeV $m_\mathcal{A}$ range.

Off-shell Higgs boson measurements: Yukawa couplings, self-coupling, compositeness, and width

Measurements of Higgs boson production in the off-shell region are presented, using the four-lepton decay channel. Data from proton-proton collisions at the CERN LHC, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, are utilized. The first direct test of composite Higgs boson models is performed, with a lower limit on the compositeness scale $Λ_\mathrm{H}$ set at 870 GeV at the 95% confidence level. Tests of gluon-fusion production within the standard model effective field theory framework are performed. The first constraint on the Higgs boson self-coupling in the off-shell region is obtained. By combining on- and off-shell measurements, the analysis sets the tightest constraints to date on light-quark Yukawa couplings, while relaxing assumptions such as the bound on the Higgs boson coupling to vector bosons, thereby providing more model-independent results. Constraints on the Higgs boson width are provided while accounting for a range of beyond-the-standard-model effects, including both light and heavy particles in the gluon-fusion production loop, as well as modified couplings to vector bosons. A combined analysis of the H$\to$ZZ and PH$\to$WW channels is performed to improve sensitivity to the Higgs boson width, yielding $Γ_\mathrm{H}$ = 5.1$^{+2.0}_{-1.8}$ MeV. The scenario of no off-shell Higgs boson production is excluded at a confidence level exceeding 5 standard deviations.

Measurements of Higgs boson production cross section in the four-lepton final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

The measurements of the Higgs boson (H) production cross sections performed by the CMS Collaboration in the four-lepton (4$\ell$, $\ell$ = e, $μ$) final state at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV are presented. These measurements are based on data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb$^{-1}$. Cross sections are measured in a fiducial region closely matching the experimental acceptance, both inclusively and differentially, as a function of the transverse momentum and the absolute value of the rapidity of the four-lepton system. The H $\to$ ZZ $\to$ 4$\ell$ inclusive fiducial cross section is measured to be 2.89 $^{+0.53}_{-0.49}$ (stat) $^{+0.29}_{-0.21}$ (syst) fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 3.09 $^{+0.27}_{-0.24}$ fb.

Measurements of inclusive and differential cross sections for the Higgs boson production and decay to four-leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections for the Higgs boson production in the H $\to$ ZZ $\to$ 4$\ell$ ($\ell$ = e,$μ$) decay channel are presented. The results are obtained from the analysis of proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section is 2.73 $\pm$ 0.26 fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 2.86 $\pm$ 0.1 fb. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of several kinematic observables sensitive to the Higgs boson production and decay to four leptons. A set of double-differential measurements is also performed, yielding a comprehensive characterization of the four leptons final state. Constraints on the Higgs boson trilinear coupling and on the bottom and charm quark coupling modifiers are derived from its transverse momentum distribution. All results are consistent with theoretical predictions from the standard model.

System-size dependence of charged-particle suppression in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

High-energy partons lose energy while propagating through the hot, strongly interacting medium produced in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, leading to a suppression of particle production at high transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$). The dependence of this energy loss on the size of the colliding nuclear system has yet to be firmly established experimentally. This Letter presents a systematic study of charged-particle suppression across four different nucleus-nucleus collision systems using nuclear modification factors ($R_\mathrm{AA}$) measured by the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC. Previous CMS measurements of $R_\mathrm{AA}$ in oxygen-oxygen, xenon-xenon, and lead-lead collisions are recast with identical $p_\mathrm{T}$ intervals and are complemented by the first measurement of the charged-particle $R_\mathrm{AA}$ in neon-neon collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.36 TeV. The neon-neon data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 0.76 nb$^{-1}$. The $R_\mathrm{AA}$ in all collision systems examined show similar qualitative trends as a function of $p_\mathrm{T}$, but have a magnitude which is ordered with the nucleon number A. The $R_\mathrm{AA}$ feature a downward slope at low $p_\mathrm{T}$, a local minimum at around 5$-$7 GeV, and an upward slope with increasing $p_\mathrm{T}$. The $R_\mathrm{AA}$ are also compared in terms of A$^{1/3}$, which is proportional to the nuclear radius. Models including only initial-state nuclear effects fail to reproduce the observed trends, whereas energy loss models reproduce the trends in the region $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\gt$ 9.6 GeV.
