Search for an exotic decay of the Higgs boson to a pair of light pseudoscalars in the final state with two muons and two b quarks in pp collisions at 13 TeV

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of light pseudoscalar particles a$_1$ is performed under the hypothesis that one of the pseudoscalars decays to a pair of opposite sign muons and the other decays to b$\overline{\mathrm{b}}$. Such signatures are predicted in a number of extensions of the standard model (SM), including next-to-minimal supersymmetry and two-Higgs-doublet models with an additional scalar singlet. The results are based on a data set of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$, accumulated with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No statistically significant excess is observed with respect to the SM backgrounds in the search region for pseudoscalar masses from 20 GeV to half of the Higgs boson mass. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction, $σ_{\mathrm{h}}\mathcal{B}$(h $\to$ a$_1$ a$_1$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-\mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}$), ranging from 5 to 33 fb, depending on the pseudoscalar mass. Corresponding limits on the branching fraction, assuming the SM prediction for $σ_{\mathrm{h}}$, are (1$-$7)$\times$ 10$^{-4}$.

An embedding technique to determine $ττ$ backgrounds in proton-proton collision data

An embedding technique is presented to estimate standard model $ττ$ backgrounds from data with minimal simulation input. In the data, the muons are removed from reconstructed $μμ$ events and replaced with simulated tau leptons with the same kinematic properties. In this way a set of hybrid events is obtained that does not rely on simulation except for the decay of the tau leptons. The challenges in describing the underlying event or the production of associated jets in the simulation are avoided. The technique described in this paper was developed for CMS. Its validation and the inherent uncertainties are also discussed. The demonstration of the performance of the technique is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by CMS in 2017 at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb$^{-1}$.

Search for the associated production of the Higgs boson and a vector boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV via Higgs boson decays to $τ$ leptons

A search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a W or a Z boson and decaying a pair of $τ$ leptons is performed. A data sample of proton-proton collisions collected at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The signal strength is measured relative to the expectation for the standard model Higgs boson, yielding $μ=$ 2.5 $^{+1.4} _{-1.3}$. These results are combined with earlier CMS measurements targeting Higgs boson decays to a pair of $τ$ leptons, performed with the same data set in the gluon fusion and vector boson fusion production modes. The combined signal strength is $μ=$ 1.24 $^{+0.29} _{-0.27}$ (1.00 $^{+0.24} _{-0.23}$ expected), and the observed significance is 5.5 standard deviations (4.8 expected) for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV.

Search for a low-mass $τ^-τ^+$ resonance in association with a bottom quark in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A general search is presented for a low-mass $τ^-τ^+$ resonance produced in association with a bottom quark. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The data are consistent with the standard model expectation. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the cross section times branching fraction are determined for two signal models: a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson decaying to a pair of $τ$ leptons produced in association with bottom quarks, and a low-mass boson X decaying to a $τ$-lepton pair that is produced in the decay of a bottom-like quark B such that B $\to$ bX. Masses between 25 and 70 GeV are probed for the light pseudoscalar boson with upper limits ranging from 250 to 44 pb. Upper limits from 20 to 0.3 pb are set on B masses between 170 and 450 GeV for X boson masses between 20 and 70 GeV.

Search for invisible decays of a Higgs boson produced through vector boson fusion in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A search for invisible decays of a Higgs boson is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The search targets the production of a Higgs boson via vector boson fusion. The data are found to be in agreement with the background contributions from standard model processes. An observed (expected) upper limit of 0.33 (0.25), at 95% confidence level, is placed on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay to invisible particles, assuming standard model production rates and a Higgs boson mass of 125.09 GeV. Results from a combination of this analysis and other direct searches for invisible decays of the Higgs boson, performed using data collected at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7, 8, and 13 TeV, are presented. An observed (expected) upper limit of 0.19 (0.15), at 95% confidence level, is set on the branching fraction of invisible decays of the Higgs boson. The combined limit represents the most stringent bound on the invisible branching fraction of the Higgs boson reported to date. This result is also interpreted in the context of Higgs-portal dark matter models, in which upper bounds are placed on the spin-independent dark-matter-nucleon scattering cross section.

Measurements of the Higgs boson width and anomalous HVV couplings from on-shell and off-shell production in the four-lepton final state

Studies of on-shell and off-shell Higgs boson production in the four-lepton final state are presented, using data from the CMS experiment at the LHC that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 80.2 fb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Joint constraints are set on the Higgs boson total width and parameters that express its anomalous couplings to two electroweak vector bosons. These results are combined with those obtained from the data collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.1 and 19.7 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. Kinematic information from the decay particles and the associated jets are combined using matrix element techniques to identify the production mechanism and to increase sensitivity to the Higgs boson couplings in both production and decay. The constraints on anomalous HVV couplings are found to be consistent with the standard model expectation in both the on-shell and off-shell regions. Under the assumption of a coupling structure similar to that in the standard model, the Higgs boson width is constrained to be 3.2 $^{+2.8}_{-2.2}$ MeV while the expected constraint based on simulation is 4.1 $^{+5.0}_{-4.0}$ MeV. The constraints on the width remain similar with the inclusion of the tested anomalous HVV interactions.

Search for dark matter in events with a leptoquark and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

A search is presented for dark matter in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV using events with at least one high transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) muon, at least one high-$p_\mathrm{T}$ jet, and large missing transverse momentum. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2016 and 2017, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb$^{-1}$. In the examined scenario, a pair of scalar leptoquarks is assumed to be produced. One leptoquark decays to a muon and a jet while the other decays to dark matter and low-$p_\mathrm{T}$ standard model particles. The signature for signal events would be significant missing transverse momentum from the dark matter in conjunction with a peak at the leptoquark mass in the invariant mass distribution of the highest $p_\mathrm{T}$ muon and jet. The data are observed to be consistent with the background predicted by the standard model. For the first benchmark scenario considered, dark matter masses up to 500 GeV are excluded for leptoquark masses $M_\mathrm{LQ}$ $\approx$ 1400 GeV, and up to 300 GeV for $M_\mathrm{LQ}$ $\approx$ 1500 GeV. For the second benchmark scenario, dark matter masses up to 600 GeV are excluded for $M_\mathrm{LQ}$ $\approx$ 1400 GeV.

Search for supersymmetry in events with a photon, jets, b-jets, and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

A search for supersymmetry is presented based on events with at least one photon, jets, and large missing transverse momentum produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ and were recorded at the LHC with the CMS detector in 2016. The analysis characterizes signal-like events by categorizing the data into various signal regions based on the number of jets, the number of b-tagged jets, and the missing transverse momentum. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the expectations from standard model processes. Limits are placed on the gluino and top squark pair production cross sections using several simplified models of supersymmetric particle production with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. Depending on the model and the mass of the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle, the production of gluinos with masses as large as 2120 GeV and the production of top squarks with masses as large as 1230 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Search for associated production of a Higgs boson and a single top quark in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A search is presented for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a single top quark, based on data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The production cross section for this process is highly sensitive to the absolute values of the top quark Yukawa coupling, $y_t$, the Higgs boson coupling to vector bosons, $g_\mathrm{HVV}$, and, uniquely, to their relative sign. Analyses using multilepton signatures, targeting H $\to$ WW, H $\to$ $ττ$, and H $\to$ ZZ decay modes, and signatures with a single lepton and a $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ pair, targeting the H $\to$ $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ decay, are combined with a reinterpretation of a measurement in the H $\to$ $γγ$ channel to constrain $y_\mathrm{t}$. For a standard model-like value of $g_\mathrm{HVV}$, the data favor positive values of $y_\mathrm{t}$ and exclude values of $y_\mathrm{t}$ below about $-$0.9 $y_\mathrm{t}^\mathrm{SM}$.

Combined measurements of Higgs boson couplings in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

Combined measurements of the production and decay rates of the Higgs boson, as well as its couplings to vector bosons and fermions, are presented. The analysis uses the LHC proton-proton collision data set recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The combination is based on analyses targeting the five main Higgs boson production mechanisms (gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with a W or Z boson, or a top quark-antiquark pair) and the following decay modes: H $\to$ $γγ$, ZZ, WW, $ττ$, bb, and $μμ$. Searches for invisible Higgs boson decays are also considered. The best-fit ratio of the signal yield to the standard model expectation is measured to be $μ$ $=$ 1.17 $\pm$ 0.10, assuming a Higgs boson mass of 125.09 GeV. Additional results are given for parametrizations with varying assumptions on the scaling behavior of the different production and decay modes, including generic ones based on ratios of cross sections and branching fractions or coupling modifiers. The results are compatible with the standard model predictions in all parametrizations considered. In addition, constraints are placed on various two Higgs doublet models.

Measurement of inclusive very forward jet cross sections in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV

Measurements of differential cross sections for inclusive very forward jet production in proton-lead collisions as a function of jet energy are presented. The data were collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC in the laboratory pseudorapidity range $-$6.6 $<$ $η$ $<$ $-$5.2. Asymmetric beam energies of 4 TeV for protons and 1.58 TeV per nucleon for Pb nuclei were used, corresponding to a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV. Collisions with either the proton (p+Pb) or the ion (Pb+p) traveling towards the negative $η$ hemisphere are studied. The jet cross sections are unfolded to stable-particle level cross sections with $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\gtrsim$ 3 GeV, and compared to predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators. In addition, the cross section ratio of p+Pb and Pb+p data is presented. The results are discussed in terms of the saturation of gluon densities at low fractional parton momenta. None of the models under consideration describes all the data over the full jet-energy range and for all beam configurations. Discrepancies between the differential cross sections in data and model predictions of more than two orders of magnitude are observed.

Search for a standard model-like Higgs boson in the mass range between 70 and 110 GeV in the diphoton final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 and 13 TeV

The results of a search for a standard model-like Higgs boson in the mass range between 70 and 110 GeV decaying into two photons are presented. The analysis uses the data set collected with the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions during the 2012 and 2016 LHC running periods. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 (35.9) fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} =$8 (13) TeV. The expected and observed 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the cross section and branching fraction into two photons are presented. The observed upper limit for the 2012 (2016) data set ranges from 129 (161) fb to 31 (26) fb. The statistical combination of the results from the analyses of the two data sets in the common mass range between 80 and 110 GeV yields an upper limit on the product of the cross section and branching fraction, normalized to that for a standard model-like Higgs boson, ranging from 0.7 to 0.2, with two notable exceptions: one in the region around the Z boson peak, where the limit rises to 1.1, which may be due to the presence of Drell-Yan dielectron production where electrons could be misidentified as isolated photons, and a second due to an observed excess with respect to the standard model prediction, which is maximal for a mass hypothesis of 95.3 GeV with a local (global) significance of 2.8 (1.3) standard deviations.

Measurement of the energy density as a function of pseudorapidity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A measurement of the energy density in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV is presented. The data have been recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC during low luminosity operations in 2015. The energy density is studied as a function of pseudorapidity in the ranges $-$6.6 $< η$ $< -$5.2 and 3.15 $< |η| <$ 5.20. The results are compared with the predictions of several models. All the models considered suggest a different shape of the pseudorapidity dependence compared to that observed in the data. A comparison with LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} =$ 0.9 and 7 TeV confirms the compatibility of the data with the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation.

Search for vector-like quarks in events with two oppositely charged leptons and jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A search for the pair production of heavy vector-like partners T and B of the top and bottom quarks has been performed by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The data sample was collected in 2016 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. Final states studied for $\mathrm{T\overline{T}}$ production include those where one of the T quarks decays via T $\to$ tZ and the other via T $\to$ bW, tZ, or tH, where H is a Higgs boson. For the $\mathrm{B\overline{B}}$ case, final states include those where one of the B quarks decays via B $\to$ bZ and the other B $\to$ tW, bZ, or bH. Events with two oppositely charged electrons or muons, consistent with coming from the decay of a Z boson, and jets are investigated. The number of observed events is consistent with standard model background estimations. Lower limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the masses of the T and B quarks for a range of branching fractions. Assuming 100% branching fractions for T $\to$ tZ, and B $\to$ bZ, T and B quark mass values below 1280 and 1130 GeV, respectively, are excluded.

Measurement of the $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ production cross section, the top quark mass, and the strong coupling constant using dilepton events in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A measurement of the top quark-antiquark pair production cross section $σ_{\mathrm{t\overline{t}}}$ in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016. Dilepton events (e$^\pmμ^\mp$, $μ^+μ^-$, e$^+$e$^-$) are selected and the cross section is measured from a likelihood fit. For a top quark mass parameter in the simulation of $m^{\mathrm{MC}}_{\mathrm{t}} =$ 172.5 GeV the fit yields a measured cross section $σ_{\mathrm{t\overline{t}}} =$ 803 $\pm$ 2 (stat) $\pm$ 25 (syst) $\pm$ 20 (lumi) pb, in agreement with the expectation from the standard model calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. A simultaneous fit of the cross section and the top quark mass parameter in the POWHEG simulation is performed. The measured value of $m^{\mathrm{MC}}_{\mathrm{t}} =$ 172.33 $\pm$ 0.14 (stat) $^{+0.66}_{-0.72}$ (syst) GeV is in good agreement with previous measurements. The resulting cross section is used, together with the theoretical prediction, to determine the top quark mass and to extract a value of the strong coupling constant with different sets of parton distribution functions.

Search for W boson decays to three charged pions

For the first time, a search for the rare decay of the W boson to three charged pions has been performed. Proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.3 fb$^{-1}$, have been analyzed. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation. An upper limit of 1.01 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ is set at 95% confidence level on the branching fraction of the W boson to three charged pions. This provides a strong motivation for theoretical calculations of this branching fraction.

Search for contact interactions and large extra dimensions in the dilepton mass spectra from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A search for nonresonant excesses in the invariant mass spectra of electron and muon pairs is presented. The analysis is based on data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36 fb$^{-1}$. No significant deviation from the standard model is observed. Limits are set at 95% confidence level on energy scales for two general classes of nonresonant models. For a class of fermion contact interaction models, lower limits ranging from 20 to 32 TeV are set on the characteristic compositeness scale $Λ$. For the Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, and Dvali model of large extra dimensions, the first results in the dilepton final state at 13 TeV are reported, and values of the ultraviolet cutoff parameter $Λ_\mathrm{T}$ below 6.9 TeV are excluded. A combination with recent CMS diphoton results improves this exclusion to $Λ_\mathrm{T}$ below 7.7 TeV, providing the most sensitive limits to date in nonhadronic final states.

Measurements of the pp $\to$ WZ inclusive and differential production cross section and constraints on charged anomalous triple gauge couplings at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

The WZ production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV using data collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The inclusive cross section is measured to be $σ_{\text{tot}}$(pp $\to$ WZ$)$ = 48.09 $^{+1.00}_{-0.96}$ (stat) $^{+0.44}_{-0.37}$ (theo) $^{+2.39}_{-2.17}$ (syst) $\pm$ 1.39 (lumi) pb, resulting in a total uncertainty of $-$2.78/$+$2.98 pb. Fiducial cross section and ratios of charge-dependent cross section measurements are provided. Differential cross section measurements are also presented with respect to three variables: the Z boson transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}$, the leading jet $p_\mathrm{T}$, and the $m$(WZ) variable, defined as the invariant mass of the system composed of the three leptons and the missing transverse momentum. Differential measurements with respect to the W boson $p_\mathrm{T}$, separated by charge, are also shown. Results are consistent with standard model predictions, favouring next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions over those at next-to-leading order. Constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings are derived via a binned maximum likelihood fit to the $m$(WZ) variable.
