Measurements of electroweak production of a photon in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The first observation of electroweak production of a photon in association with two forward jets in proton-proton collisions is presented. The measurement uses data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2016$-$2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis is performed in a region enriched in photon production via vector boson fusion, with a requirement on the transverse momentum of the photon to exceed 200 GeV. The cross section is measured to be 202 $^{+36}_{-32}$ fb, at a significance with respect to the null hypothesis that exceeds five standard deviations. This is in agreement with the standard model prediction of 177 $^{+13}_{-12}$ fb. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of various observables. Limits are set on dimension-6 effective field theory operators that contribute to the WW$γ$ interaction. The observed 95% confidence intervals for the corresponding Warsaw basis Wilson coefficients $c_\mathrm{W}$ and $c_\mathrm{HWB}$ are [$-$0.11, 0.16] and [$-$1.6, 1.5], respectively.

Search for the nonresonant production of a pair of additional Higgs bosons in the Type-X two-Higgs-doublet model in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for the production of two additional Higgs bosons from an off-shell Z boson, where both additional particles decay to $τ$ lepton pairs. The search is performed with a data sample collected with the CMS detector from proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. No deviation from the standard model background is observed. Exclusion limits are set on the Type-X two-Higgs-doublet model alignment scenario. These results rule out this model as an explanation to the potential tension between the experimental and theoretical values of the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons and fermions using the $γγ$ final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Possible anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions are studied using Higgs boson candidates decaying to a pair of photons. The study is based on proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Events with Higgs boson candidates produced via gluon fusion, electroweak vector boson fusion and in association with a vector boson, are categorized using matrix element techniques and multivariate discriminants. The $CP$ properties of the Higgs boson couplings to gluons through loops of heavy particles, as well as the tensor structure of its interactions with two electroweak bosons, are investigated. The results are interpreted in terms of the fractional contributions of anomalous Higgs boson couplings to the total production cross section of each process and are found to be consistent with the standard model expectations.

Search for new physics in triple boson production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using the effective field theory approach

A search for new physics in the production of three massive gauge bosons (VVV, where V is a W or Z boson) is presented. The event selection is most effective in the Lorentz-boosted regime in which all three bosons have a transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) above 200 GeV. Standard model (SM) processes contribute few events in this regime. When a boosted W or Z boson decays hadronically, the decay products tend to form a large-radius jet with substructure that reflects the presence of two quarks from the decay; such jets are called V-tagged jets. Special techniques to reconstruct and select V-tagged jets are applied. Events are categorized according to the number and kinematic features of charged leptons and V-tagged jets. Event yields are obtained in bins of a suitable kinematic variable such as the scalar $p_\mathrm{T}$ sum of the reconstructed objects in the event. No excess over SM expectations is observed. Bounds are placed on Wilson coefficients for a set of mass dimension-6 and -8 operators in the framework of SM effective field theory. The two most stringent bounds placed by this analysis are $-$0.13 $\lt$ $c_\mathrm{W}/Λ^2$ $\lt$ 0.12 TeV$^{-2}$ and $-$0.24 $\lt$ $c_\mathrm{Hq3}/Λ^2$ $\lt$ 0.21 TeV$^{-2}$ at 95% CL, where $c_\mathrm{W}$ and $c_\mathrm{Hq3}$ are dimension-6 Wilson coefficients in the Warsaw basis and $Λ$ is the mass scale of new physics.

First measurements of vector boson scattering in W$^\pm$W$^{\pm}$ and WZ production in all-leptonic final states at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

The production cross sections of W$^\pm$W$^{\pm}$ and WZ boson pairs in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions are measured at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 171 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the CMS detector during 2022$-$2024. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes: W$^{\pm}$Z $\to$ $\ell^\pmν\ell^{\prime\pm}\ell^{\prime\mp}$ and W$^\pm$W$^{\pm}$ $\to$ $\ell^\pmν\ell^{\prime\pm}ν$, where $\ell, \ell'$ = e or $μ$. The electroweak productions of W$^\pm$W$^{\pm}$ and WZ bosons are each observed with a significance greater than five standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis. Differential fiducial cross sections as functions of several observables are also measured.

Search for pair production of additional neutral scalars within the Inert Doublet Model in a final state with two electrons or two muons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and 13.6 TeV

A first dedicated search for pair production of new scalars predicted by the Inert Doublet Model is performed using proton-proton collisions. Data were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and 13.6 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 138 fb$^{-1}$ and 35 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. Within this model, four additional scalar bosons (H, A, H$^+$, and H$^-$) are predicted. Through an additional discrete symmetry, the lightest new scalar, H, is stable, rendering it a viable dark matter candidate. These candidates can originate from quark-antiquark annihilation producing an offshell Z boson that decays to a pair of the new scalars. The target final state consists of exactly two opposite-charge same-flavour leptons (electrons or muons), with missing transverse momentum due to the stable neutral scalars, and very little hadronic activity. A parameterised neural network is used to separate the signal from the standard model background. No significant excess of events is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section of the two new neutral scalars, H and A, expressed in terms of their masses, $m_\mathrm{H}$ and $m_\mathrm{A}$, in the $m_\mathrm{H}$ vs. $m_\mathrm{A}$ plane. The observed (expected) exclusion region reaches $m_\mathrm{H}$ = 108 (106) GeV for $m_\mathrm{H}-m_\mathrm{A}$ = 78 (76) GeV and at $m_\mathrm{H}$ = 70 GeV, covers the range of $m_\mathrm{H}-m_\mathrm{A}$ = 40$-$90 (35$-$90) GeV.

Search for single vector-like quark production in opposite-sign dilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for single production of a vector-like top quark T, decaying into the standard model top quark and Higgs boson, in a final state including two opposite-sign leptons (electrons or muons), jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC in the years 2016$-$2018, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 138 fb$^{-1}$. No excess in data over the background expectations is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the product of the T production cross section and its decay branching fraction to tH are set, ranging from 2.0 pb at a T mass of 600 GeV to 0.1 pb at 1000 GeV. This is the first search in the T $\to$ tH channel in opposite-sign dilepton final states.

Search for light pseudoscalar bosons, pair-produced in Higgs boson decays in the four-electron final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for pairs of light neutral pseudoscalar bosons (A) resulting from the decay of a Higgs boson is performed. The search is conducted using LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector in 2016$-$2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The A boson decays into a highly collimated electron-positron pair. A novel multivariate algorithm using tracks and calorimeter information is developed to identify these distinctive signatures, and events are selected with two such merged electron-positron pairs. No significant excess above the standard model background predictions is observed. Upper limits on the branching fraction for H $\to$ AA $\to$ 4e are set at 95% confidence level, for masses between 10 and 100 MeV and proper decay lengths below 100 $μ$m, reaching branching fraction sensitivities as low as 10$^{-5}$. This is the first search for Higgs boson decays to four electrons via light pseudoscalars at the LHC. It significantly improves the experimental sensitivity to axionlike particles with masses below 100 MeV.

First evidence for mixing-induced $CP$ violation in B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ $\to$ J/$ψ\,ϕ$(1020) decays in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 13 TeV

A novel machine-learning-based flavor-tagging algorithm combining same-side and opposite-side tagging is used to obtain the equivalent of 27$\,$000 tagged B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ $\to$ J/$ψ\, ϕ$(1020) decays from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ $=$ 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 96.5 fb$^{-1}$. A time- and flavor-dependent angular analysis of the $μ^+μ^-$K$^+$K$^-$ final state, consistent with a $ϕ$(1020) $\to$ K$^+$K$^-$ decay, is used to measure parameters of the $\mathrm{B}^0_\mathrm{s}-\overline{\mathrm{B}}^0_\mathrm{s}$ system. The weak phase is measured to be $ϕ_\mathrm{s}$ = $-$73 $\pm$ 22 (stat) $\pm$ 10 (syst) mrad, which, combined with the $\sqrt{s}$ $=$ 8 TeV CMS result, gives $ϕ_\mathrm{s}$ = $-$75 $\pm$ 23 mrad. This value differs from zero by 3.2 standard deviations, providing the first evidence for mixing-induced $CP$ violation in B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ $\to$ J/$ψ\,ϕ$(1020) decays. All measured physics parameters are found to agree with standard model predictions where available.

Search for a new heavy scalar resonance decaying into the Higgs boson and a new scalar particle in the $\mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}\mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}$ final state using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for a new heavy scalar resonance (X) decaying into the 125 GeV standard model Higgs boson (H) and a new scalar particle (Y) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. The analysis is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMS detector during LHC Run 2. The $\mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}\mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}$ final state is used as a probe to search for phenomena beyond the standard model where, in the X $\to$ YH process, the Y and H each decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair. A range of masses from 400 GeV to 1.6 TeV for the resonance X and from 60 GeV to 1.4 TeV for the scalar Y is investigated. The observations are in agreement with the background-only hypothesis. The largest excess, with a local (global) significance of 3.47 (2.44) standard deviations, is observed for hypothetical X and Y masses of 600 and 400 GeV, respectively. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the production cross section times branching fraction are presented for signal mass hypotheses in the range of the search. Results are interpreted within the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model scenario.

Search for light charged Higgs bosons decaying to charm and strange quarks in $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ events in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for a light charged Higgs boson H$^\pm$ in top quark pair production ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$), where one of the top quarks decays to an H$^\pm$ and a bottom quark, while the other decays to a W$^\mp$ boson and a bottom quark. The H$^\pm$ is assumed to decay into a charm and a strange quark, whereas the W$^\mp$ boson decays into a charged lepton (electron or muon) and a neutrino. Results are reported based on proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis probes H$^\pm$ masses in the range 40 to 160 GeV using the invariant mass spectrum of the two light jets, where light jets are defined as jets that do not satisfy the bottom quark tagging requirement. The observed yield is found to be consistent with standard model predictions. Upper limits are set on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$(t $\to$ H$^\pm$ b), with values in the range of 0.07$-$1.12% at 95% confidence level, under the assumption that $\mathcal{B}$(H$^\pm$ $\to$ cs) = 100%. These are the first direct limits on charged Higgs bosons produced in top quark decays for masses between 40 and 50 GeV, and the most stringent limits to date in the 70$-$110 GeV range.

Observation of the rare decay $η$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-$e$^+$e$^-$

A first observation of the rare decay $η$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-$e$^+$e$^-$ is reported by the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC. The result is based on a proton-proton collision data sample at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38.0 fb$^{-1}$, acquired in 2022 using a high-rate dimuon trigger. Using the $η$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-γ$ decay channel for normalization, the branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}$($η$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-$e$^+$e$^-$) = (2.4 $\pm$ 0.8)$\times$ 10$^{-6}$, with the uncertainty including statistical and systematic sources as well as the $\mathcal{B}$($η$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-γ$) uncertainty. This result is close to two orders of magnitude smaller than the existing limit, and is consistent with recent theoretical predictions.

Search for dijet resonances with data scouting in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for narrow resonances, with a mass between 0.6 and 1.8 TeV, decaying to pairs of jets, in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The search is performed using dijets that are reconstructed, selected, and recorded in a compact form by the high-level trigger in a technique referred to as "data scouting", from data collected in 2016$-$2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117 fb$^{-1}$. The dijet mass spectra are well described by a smooth parameterization, and no significant evidence for the production of new particles is observed. Model-independent upper limits are presented on the product of the cross section, branching fraction, and acceptance for the individual cases of narrow quark-quark, quark-gluon, and gluon-gluon resonances, and are compared to the predictions from a variety of models of narrow dijet resonance production. The upper limit on the coupling of a dark matter mediator to quarks is presented as a function of the mediator mass. The sensitivity of this search goes beyond what is expected from statistical scaling with the integrated luminosity alone, as a consequence of the use of fewer parameters in the background function within a more robust statistical procedure.

Search for new physics in the final state with a single photon and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for new physics in events featuring a single photon and missing transverse momentum is presented, using proton-proton $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC between 2017 and 2018. This analysis, combined with a previous study of 36 fb$^{-1}$ of 2016 data (totaling 137 fb$^{-1}$), reveals no significant deviations from standard model expectations. The results are then used to establish 95% confidence level limits on parameters in theoretical models involving dark matter and large extra dimensions. Compared to the 2016-only analysis, this search achieves up to a 14% improvement in exclusion reach for mediator masses in simplified dark matter models, along with 11% and 10% enhancements in the limits on the effective field theory suppression scale and the fundamental Planck scale, respectively. These results are the most stringent constraints on these parameters to date.

Improved results on Higgs boson pair production in the 4b final state

Measurements of Higgs boson pair (HH) production in the four bottom quark (4b) final state are presented using proton-proton (pp) collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 62 fb$^{-1}$. Events in which the Higgs boson decays, H$\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$, are separately reconstructed as pairs of small-radius jets (resolved), as well as those where they are reconstructed as single large-radius jets (merged), are studied exclusively. Benefiting from new methods in trigger selection, event selection, and signal extraction, the combination of analyses in the resolved and merged topologies gives an observed (expected) upper limit on the HH signal strength, $μ_\mathrm{HH}$, of 4.4 (4.4) at 95% confidence level (CL). Compared to previously published LHC results in the 4b final state, the expected limit with an equivalent integrated luminosity is improved by more than a factor of two in the resolved topology and is better in the merged topology as well. An updated analysis of the resolved topology using 138 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV pp collision data yields an observed (expected) 95% CL upper limit on $μ_\mathrm{HH}$ of 10.0 (5.9), an improvement of about 25% in the expected limit compared to the published results using the same data. Results in the 4b final state with 13 and 13.6 TeV are combined, resulting in an observed (expected) 95% CL upper limit on $μ_\mathrm{HH}$ of 4.7 (2.8). The allowed ranges for the Higgs boson trilinear self-coupling and quartic coupling between two Higgs bosons and two vector bosons are also reported. These are the most stringent constraints achieved in the 4b final state to date.

Combination and interpretation of differential Higgs boson production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Precision measurements of Higgs boson differential production cross sections are a key tool to probe the properties of the Higgs boson and test the standard model. New physics can affect both Higgs boson production and decay, leading to deviations from the distributions that are expected in the standard model. In this paper, combined measurements of differential spectra in a fiducial region matching the experimental selections are performed, based on analyses of four Higgs boson decay channels ($γγ$, ZZ$^{(*)}$, WW$^{(*)}$, and $ττ$) using proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The differential measurements are extrapolated to the full phase space and combined to provide the differential spectra. A measurement of the total Higgs boson production cross section is also performed using the $γγ$ and ZZ decay channels, with a result of 53.4 $^{+2.9}_{-2.9}$ (stat) $^{+1.9}_{-1.8}$ (syst) pb, consistent with the standard model prediction of 55.6 $\pm$ 2.5 pb. The fiducial measurements are used to compute limits on Higgs boson couplings using the $κ$-framework and the SM effective field theory.

Simultaneous measurements of $N$-subjettiness observables in jets from gluons and light-flavour quarks, and in decays of boosted W bosons and top quarks

A simultaneous measurement of 25 substructure observables is presented using large-radius jets with high transverse momentum from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The measurement is carried out on dijet events and $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ events enriched in Lorentz-boosted W bosons and top quarks decaying hadronically. The three data samples consist of jets with one, two, or three prongs from the showering and hadronization of a gluon or light-flavour quark, two quarks, or three quarks, respectively. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016$-$2018. A detailed characterization of the jet substructure is provided using a 6-body basis of $N$-subjettiness observables that overconstrains the phase space of the resolved emissions in the jet. The measurements are unfolded to the level of stable particles, and an estimate of the particle-level correlations between observables is provided, ensuring that the results can be used to systematically assess and refine the modelling of radiation in jets.

Search for electroweakinos in compressed-spectrum scenarios with low-momentum isolated tracks in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for supersymmetric electroweakinos is performed using events with a low-momentum (soft) isolated track and large missing transverse momentum, targeting nearly mass-degenerate higgsino-like charginos and neutralinos. For mass splittings of 0.3$-$1 GeV, the chargino decays to the lightest neutralino and a low-momentum pion, which can produce a soft, potentially displaced track. A parameterized neural network separates signal from background using kinematic and impact parameter information. The analysis uses 138 fb$^{-1}$ of proton$-$proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector. No significant excess above the standard model expectation is observed. At 95% confidence level, the considered higgsino model is excluded for mass splittings in the range 0.28$-$1.15 GeV and for chargino masses up to 185 GeV, setting stringent constraints on natural supersymmetry scenarios.
