Transient random walks on the space of lattices

Given $d\geq2$, we construct a Zariski-dense random walk on the space of lattices SL$_d(\mathbb{R})/$SL$_d(\mathbb{Z})$ that exhibits escape of mass. This negates the suggestion of recurrence made by Benoist [Ben14] (ICM 2014) and by B\'enard-de Saxc\'e [BS22] (also asked in [BQ12]). For any $p \in (0,1)$, we also construct such a random walk with finite $L^p$-moment which shows that the moment assumption in [BS22] is sharp.

Projections of self-affine fractals

We extend Falconer's 1988 landmark result on the dimensions of self-affine fractals to encompass the dimensions of their projections, showing furthermore that their families of exceptional projections contain algebraic varieties which are preserved by the underlying linear algebraic group. The techniques which we develop allow us to construct examples of additional new phenomena: firstly, we give general examples of equilibrium measures on self-affine fractals which admit non-exact-dimensional projections. Secondly, we construct strongly irreducible self-affine sets which have small sumsets without any arithmetic resonance in their construction.

The joint translation spectrum and Manhattan manifolds

We define and study geometric versions of the Benoist limit cone and matrix joint spectrum, which we call the translation cone and the joint translation spectrum, respectively. These new notions allow us to generalize the study of embeddings into products of rank-one simple Lie groups and to compare group actions on different metric spaces, quasi-morphisms, Anosov representations and many other natural objects of study. We identify the joint translation spectrum with the image of the gradient function of a corresponding Manhattan manifold: a higher dimensional version of the well known and studied Manhattan curve. As a consequence we deduce many properties of the spectrum. For example we show that it is given by the closure of the set of all possible drift vectors associated to finitely supported, symmetric, admissible random walks on the associated group.

Expanding measures: Random walks and rigidity on homogeneous spaces

Let $G$ be a real Lie group, $Λ<G$ a lattice and $H<G$ a connected semisimple subgroup without compact factors and with finite center. We define the notion of $H$-expanding measures $μ$ on $H$ and, applying recent work of Eskin-Lindenstrauss, prove that $μ$-stationary probability measures on $G/Λ$ are homogeneous. Transferring a construction by Benoist-Quint and drawing on ideas of Eskin-Mirzakhani-Mohammadi, we construct Lyapunov/Margulis functions to show that $H$-expanding random walks on $G/Λ$ satisfy a recurrence condition and that homogeneous subspaces are repelling. Combined with a countability result, this allows us to prove equidistribution of trajectories in $G/Λ$ for $H$-expanding random walks and to obtain orbit closure descriptions. Finally, elaborating on an idea of Simmons-Weiss, we deduce Birkhoff genericity of a class of measures with respect to some diagonal flows and extend their applications to Diophantine approximation on similarity fractals to a non-conformal and weighted setting.

Stationary probability measures on projective spaces 2: the critical case

In a previous article, given a finite-dimensional real vector space $V$ and a probability measure $μ$ on $\operatorname{PGL}(V)$ with finite first moment, we gave a description of all $μ$-stationary probability measures on the projective space $\operatorname{P}(V)$ in the non-critical (or Lyapunov dominated) case. In the current article, we complete the analysis by providing a full description of the more subtle critical case. Our results demonstrate an algebraic rigidity in this situation. Combining our results with those of Furstenberg--Kifer ('83), Guivarch--Raugi ('07) $\&$ Benoist--Quint ('14), we deduce a classification of all stationary probability measures on the projective space for i.i.d random matrix products with finite first moment without any algebraic assumption.

A variational principle relating self-affine measures to self-affine sets

A breakthrough result of Bárány, Hochman and Rapaport published in 2019 established that every self-affine measure on $\mathbb{R}^2$ satisfying certain mild non-degeneracy conditions has Hausdorff dimension equal to its Lyapunov dimension. In combination with a variational principle established earlier by Morris and Shmerkin this result implied as a corollary that the attractor of a planar affine iterated function system satisfying the same conditions necessarily has Hausdorff dimension equal to a value proposed by Falconer in 1988. In this article we extend the variational principle of Morris and Shmerkin from the planar context to the case of affine iterated function systems acting on $\mathbb{R}^d$. This allows a recent theorem of Rapaport on the dimensions of self-affine measures in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to be extended into a characterisation of the dimensions of the corresponding self-affine subsets of $\mathbb{R}^3$. At the core of the present work is an algebraic result concerned with finding large Zariski-dense Schottky semigroups inside a given finitely generated completely reducible semigroup of linear transformations.

Stationary probability measures on projective spaces for block-Lyapunov dominated systems

Given a finite-dimensional real vector space $V$, a probability measure $μ$ on $\operatorname{PGL}(V)$ and a $μ$-invariant subspace $W$, under a block-Lyapunov contraction assumption, we prove existence and uniqueness of lifts to $P(V)\setminus P(W)$ of stationary probability measures on the quotient $P(V/W)$. In the other direction, i.e. under block-Lyapunov expansion, we prove that stationary measures on $P(V/W)$ have lifts if any only if the group generated by the support of $μ$ stabilizes a subspace $W'$ not contained in $W$ and exhibiting a faster growth than on $W \cap W'$. These refine the description of stationary probability measures on projective spaces as given by Furstenberg, Kifer and Hennion, and under the same assumptions, extend corresponding results by Aoun, Benoist, Bruère, Guivarc'h, and others.

Stationary measures for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$-actions on homogeneous bundles over flag varieties

Let $G$ be a real semisimple Lie group with finite centre and without compact factors, $Q<G$ a parabolic subgroup and $X$ a homogeneous space of $G$ admitting an equivariant projection on the flag variety $G/Q$ with fibres given by copies of lattice quotients of a semisimple factor of $Q$. Given a probability measure $μ$, Zariski-dense in a copy of $H=\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ in $G$, we give a description of $μ$-stationary probability measures on $X$ and prove corresponding equidistribution results. Contrary to the results of Benoist-Quint corresponding to the case $G=Q$, the type of stationary measures that $μ$ admits depends strongly on the position of $H$ relative to $Q$. We describe possible cases and treat all but one of them, among others using ideas from the works of Eskin-Mirzakhani and Eskin-Lindenstrauss.

Random walks on hyperbolic spaces: second order expansion of the rate function at the drift

Let $(X,d)$ be a geodesic Gromov-hyperbolic space, $o \in X$ a basepoint and $μ$ a countably supported non-elementary probability measure on $\operatorname{Isom}(X)$. Denote by $z_n$ the random walk on $X$ driven by the probability measure $μ$. Supposing that $μ$ has finite exponential moment, we give a second-order Taylor expansion of the large deviation rate function of the sequence $\frac{1}{n}d(z_n,o)$ and show that the corresponding coefficient is expressed by the variance in the central limit theorem satisfied by the sequence $d(z_n,o)$. This provides a positive answer to a question raised in \cite{BMSS}. The proof relies on the study of the Laplace transform of $d(z_n,o)$ at the origin using a martingale decomposition first introduced by Benoist--Quint together with an exponential submartingale transform and large deviation estimates for the quadratic variation process of certain martingales.

Counting and boundary limit theorems for representations of Gromov-hyperbolic groups

Given a Gromov-hyperbolic group $G$ endowed with a finite symmetric generating set, we study the statistics of counting measures on the spheres of the associated Cayley graph under linear representations of $G$. More generally, we obtain a weak law of large numbers for subadditive functions, echoing the classical Fekete lemma. For strongly irreducible and proximal representations, we prove a counting central limit theorem with a Berry--Esseen type error rate and exponential large deviation estimates. Moreover, in the same setting, we show convergence of interpolated normalized matrix norms along geodesic rays to Brownian motion and a functional law of iterated logarithm, paralleling the analogous results in the theory of random matrix products. Our counting large deviation estimates provide a positive answer to a question of Kaimanovich--Kapovich--Schupp. In most cases, our counting limit theorems will be obtained from stronger almost sure limit laws for Patterson--Sullivan measures on the boundary of the group.

Random walks on hyperbolic spaces: Concentration inequalities and probabilistic Tits alternative

The goal of this article is two-fold: in a first part, we prove Azuma-Hoeffding type concentration inequalities around the drift for the displacement of non-elementary random walks on hyperbolic spaces. For a proper hyperbolic space $M$, we obtain explicit bounds that depend only on $M$, the size of support of the measure as in the classical case of sums of independent random variables, and on the norm of the driving probability measure in the left regular representation of the group of isometries. We obtain uniform bounds in the case of hyperbolic groups and effective bounds for simple linear groups of rank-one. In a second part, using our concentration inequalities, we give quantitative finite-time estimates on the probability that two independent random walks on the isometry group of a hyperbolic space generate a free non-abelian subgroup. Our concentration results follow from a more general, but less explicit statement that we prove for cocycles which satisfy a certain cohomological equation. For example, this also allows us to obtain subgaussian concentration bounds around the top Lyapunov exponent of random matrix products in arbitrary dimension.

(Non)-escape of mass and equidistribution for horospherical actions on trees

Let $G$ be a large group acting on a biregular tree $T$ and $Γ\leq G$ a geometrically finite lattice. In an earlier work, the authors classified orbit closures of the action of the horospherical subgroups on $G/Γ$. In this article we show that there is no escape of mass and use this to prove that, in fact, dense orbits equidistribute to the Haar measure on $G/Γ$. On the other hand, we show that new dynamical phenomena for horospherical actions appear on quotients by non-geometrically finite lattices: we give examples of non-geometrically finite lattices where an escape of mass phenomenon occurs and where the orbital averages along a Folner sequence do not converge. In the last part, as a by-product of our methods, we show that projections to $Γ\backslash T$ of the uniform distributions on large spheres in the tree $T$ converge to a natural probability measure on $Γ\backslash T$. Finally, we apply this equidistribution result to a lattice point counting problem to obtain counting asymptotics with exponential error term.

Large deviations for random walks on Gromov-hyperbolic spaces

Let $Γ$ be a countable group acting on a geodesic Gromov-hyperbolic metric space $X$ and $μ$ a probability measure on $Γ$ whose support generates a non-elementary subsemigroup. Under the assumption that $μ$ has a finite exponential moment, we establish large deviations results for the distance and the translation length of a random walk with driving measure $μ$. From our results, we deduce a special case of a conjecture regarding large deviations of spectral radii of random matrix products.

A converse statement to Hutchinson's theorem and a dimension gap for self-affine measures

A well-known theorem of J.E. Hutchinson states that if an iterated function system consists of similarity transformations and satisfies the open set condition then its attractor supports a self-similar measure with Hausdorff dimension equal to the similarity dimension. In this article we prove the following result which may be regarded as a form of partial converse: if an iterated function system consists of invertible affine transformations whose linear parts do not preserve a common invariant subspace, and its attractor supports a self-affine measure with Hausdorff dimension equal to the affinity dimension, then the system necessarily consists of similarity transformations. We obtain this result by showing that the equilibrium measures of an affine iterated function system are never Bernoulli measures unless the system either is reducible or consists of similarity transformations. The proof builds on earlier results in the thermodynamic formalism of affine iterated function systems due to Bochi, Feng, Käenmäki, Shmerkin and the first named author and also relies on the work of Benoist on the spectral properties of Zariski-dense subsemigroups of reductive linear groups.

Large deviation principles for non-elementary random walks on hyperbolic spaces

We show that the displacement and translation distance of non-elementary random walks on isometry groups of hyperbolic spaces satisfy large deviation principles with the same rate function $I$. Roughly, this means that there exists function $I(t)$ which accurately predicts the exponential decay rate of the probability that the translation distance of a random product of length $n$ is $tn$, and similarly for the displacement. This settles a special case of a conjecture concerning the large deviation principle for the spectral radius of random matrix products. In a second part, we give a characterization of the effective support of the rate function only in terms of the deterministic notion of joint stable length. Finally, as a by-product of our techniques, we deduce some further deterministic results on the asymptotics of a bounded set of isometries. Some of the results in this paper were obtained simultaneously and independently by Boulanger--Mathieu as we discuss in the introduction.

Markov Random Walks on Homogeneous Spaces and Diophantine Approximation on Fractals

In a first part, using the recent measure classification results of Eskin--Lindenstrauss, we give a criterion to ensure a.s. equidistribution of empirical measures of an i.i.d. random walk on a homogeneous space $G/Γ$. Employing renewal and joint equidistribution arguments, this result is generalized in the second part to random walks with Markovian dependence. Finally, following a strategy of Simmons--Weiss, we apply these results to Diophantine approximation problems on fractals and show that almost every point with respect to Hausdorff measure on a graph directed self-similar set is of generic type, so in particular, well approximable.

The joint spectrum

We introduce the notion of \emph{joint spectrum} of a compact set of matrices $S \subset GL_d(\mathbb{C})$, which is a multi-dimensional generalization of the joint spectral radius. We begin with a thorough study of its properties (under various assumptions: irreducibility, Zariski-density, domination). Several classical properties of the joint spectral radius are shown to hold in this generalized setting and an analogue of the Lagarias-Wang finiteness conjecture is discussed. Then we relate the joint spectrum to matrix valued random processes and study what points of it can be realized as Lyapunov vectors. We also show how the joint spectrum encodes all word metrics on reductive groups. Several examples are worked out in detail.
