Distribution of sums involving Dirichlet characters over the $k$-free integers

Assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis and a bound for the negative discrete moments of the Riemann zeta function (resp. Dirichlet $L$-functions), we prove the existence of a logarithmic limiting distribution for the normalized partial sums $x^{-\frac{1}{2k}}\sum_{n\leq x}f(n)$, where $f$ is either a quadratic Dirichlet character or a modified Dirichlet character, restricted to the $k$-free integers. Moreover, we strengthen a conjecture made by Aymone, Medeiros and the author (cf. Ramanujan J. 59(3):713-728, 2022) concerning the precise order of magnitude for these partial sums.

Modified Dirichlet character sums over the $k$-free integers

The main question of this paper is the following: how much cancellation can the partial sums restricted to the $k$-free integers up to $x$ of a $\pm 1$ multiplicative function $f$ be in terms of $x$? Building upon the recent paper by Q. Liu, Acta Math. Sin. (Engl. Ser.) 39 (2023), no. 12, 2316-2328, we prove that under the Riemann Hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, we can get $x^{1/(k+1)}$ cancellation when $f$ is a modified quadratic Dirichlet character, i.e., $f$ is completely multiplicative and for some quadratic Dirichlet character $χ$, $f(p)=χ(p)$ for all but a finite subset of prime numbers. This improves the conditional results by Aymone, Medeiros and the author cf. Ramanujan J. 59 (2022), no. 3, 713-728.

On the expected number of roots of a random Dirichlet polynomial

Let $T>0$ and consider the random Dirichlet polynomial $S_T(t)=Re\, \sum_{n\leq T} X_n n^{-1/2-it}$, where $(X_n)_{n}$ are i.i.d. Gaussian random variables with mean $0$ and variance $1$. We prove that the expected number of roots of $S_T(t)$ in the dyadic interval $[T,2T]$, say $\mathbb{E} N(T)$, is approximately $2/\sqrt{3}$ times the number of zeros of the Riemann $ζ$ function in the critical strip up to height $T$. Moreover, we also compute the expected number of zeros in the same dyadic interval of the $k$-th derivative of $S_T(t)$. Our proof requires the best upper bounds for the Riemann $ζ$ function known up to date, and also estimates for the $L^2$ averages of certain Dirichlet polynomials.

Multiplicative functions supported on the $k$-free integers with small partial sums

We provide examples of multiplicative functions $f$ supported on the $k$-free integers such that at primes $f(p)=\pm 1$ and such that the partial sums of $f$ up to $x$ are $o(x^{1/k})$. Further, if we assume the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, then we can improve the exponent $1/k$: There are examples such that the partial sums up to $x$ are $o(x^{1/(k+\frac{1}{2})+ε})$, for all $ε>0$. This generalizes to the $k$-free integers the results of Aymone, `` A note on multiplicative functions resembling the {M}öbius function'', J. Number Theory, 212 (2020), pp. 113--121.
