Charged-particle jet spectra in event-shape engineered Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with ALICE

The path-length dependence of jet quenching can help to constrain different jet quenching mechanisms in heavy-ion collisions. However, measuring an explicit value for this dependence has proven challenging. Traditional approaches, which consider anisotropic jet suppression arising from geometric asymmetries, have successfully measured a non-zero azimuthal dependence of jet modification with respect to the event-plane angle of the collision. While such signals improve our qualitative understanding of this topic, extraction of an explicit dependence from these results is limited by fluctuations in the initial state and jet--medium interactions. A new approach to characterize the geometry of the collision is to use event-shape engineering, a technique that classifies events within a centrality class according to their elliptical anisotropies. By doing so, we gain an improved knowledge of the initial-state medium, consequently enabling better constraints on the average path length traversed by the jet. In these proceedings, new results of jet spectra from event-shape-engineered collisions at ALICE will be presented.

Hard probe path lengths and event-shape engineering of the quark-gluon plasma

As particles traverse the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed during a heavy ion collision they undergo energy loss depending on the distance travelled. We study several temperature- and velocity-weighted path length distributions of non-interacting particles as they traverse the plasma using the Trajectum heavy ion code, including those of back-to-back path lengths. We use event-shape engineering (ESE) in combination with in-plane versus out-of-plane selection to accurately control these path lengths. Lastly, we show how soft observables depend on the different ESE classes.

Study of path-length dependent energy loss of jets in p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions with ALICE

Jet quenching, a standard signature of quark--gluon plasma (QGP) formation in which jets lose energy by traversing the medium, comprises a well-studied set of observables in heavy-ion collisions. Significant questions remain, however, concerning the mechanisms driving this phenomenon. Theoretical work that attempts to address these open questions offers the path-length dependence of jet energy loss as one way to better understand the underlying mechanisms of jet quenching. It has proven challenging, however, to derive explicit values for the path-length dependence from experimental data. These proceedings discuss recent results from ALICE that attempt to contribute to our understanding of this phenomenon, including results of event-shape engineered jet spectra, the jet-particle $v_{2}$, and correlation studies between hard triggers and hadrons.
