Conformal Invariance of (0,2) Sigma Models on Calabi-Yau Manifolds

Long ago, Nemeschansky and Sen demonstrated that the Ricci-flat metric on a Calabi-Yau manifold could be corrected, order by order in perturbation theory, to produce a conformally invariant (2,2) nonlinear sigma model. Here we extend this result to (0,2) sigma models for stable holomorphic vector bundles over Calabi-Yaus.

Marginal deformations of heterotic $G_2$ sigma models

Recently, the infinitesimal moduli space of heterotic $G_2$ compactifications was described in supergravity and related to the cohomology of a target space differential. In this paper we identify the marginal deformations of the corresponding heterotic nonlinear sigma model with cohomology classes of a worldsheet BRST operator. This BRST operator is nilpotent if and only if the target space geometry satisfies the heterotic supersymmetry conditions. We relate this to the supergravity approach by showing that the corresponding cohomologies are indeed isomorphic. We work at tree-level in $α'$ perturbation theory and study general geometries, in particular with non-vanishing torsion.

Vertical D4-D2-D0 bound states on K3 fibrations and modularity

An explicit formula is derived for the generating function of vertical D4-D2-D0 bound states on smooth K3 fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds, generalizing previous results of Gholampour and Sheshmani. It is also shown that this formula satisfies strong modularity properties, as predicted by string theory. This leads to a new construction of vector valued modular forms which exhibits some of the features of a generalized Hecke transform.

Gaugino Condensation and the Cosmological Constant

The existence of de Sitter solutions in string theory is strongly constrained by no-go theorems. We continue our investigation of corrections to the heterotic effective action, with the aim of either strengthening or evading the these constraints. We consider the combined effects of H-flux, gauge bundles, higher derivative corrections and gaugino condensation. The only consistent solutions we find with maximal symmetry in four dimensions are Minkowski spacetimes, ruling out both de Sitter and anti-de Sitter solutions constructed from these ingredients alone.

Mirror Symmetry in Physics: The Basics

These notes are aimed at mathematicians working on topics related to mirror symmetry, but are unfamiliar with the physical origins of this subject. We explain the physical concepts that enable this surprising duality to exist, using the torus as an illustrative example. Then, we develop the basic foundations of conformal field theory so that we can explain how mirror symmetry was first discovered in that context. Along the way we will uncover a deep connection between conformal field theories with (2,2) supersymmetry and Calabi-Yau manifolds. (Based on lectures given during the "Thematic Program on Calabi-Yau Varieties: Arithmetic, Geometry and Physics" at the Fields Institute in Toronto, October 10-11, 2013.)

Heterotic Flux Geometry from Chiral Gauge Dynamics

Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions with (0,2) supersymmetry admit a much broader, and more interesting, class of vacuum solutions than their better studied (2,2) counterparts. In this thesis, we will explore some of the possibilities that are offered by this additional freedom by including field-dependent theta-angles and FI parameters. The moduli spaces that will result from this procedure correspond to heterotic string backgrounds with non-trivial H-flux and NS-brane sources. Along the way, a remarkable relationship between (0,2) gauge anomalies and H-flux will emerge.

Target Spaces from Chiral Gauge Theories

Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions with (0,2) supersymmetry are central in the study of string compactifications. Remarkably little is known about generic (0,2) theories. We consider theories with branches on which multiplets with a net gauge anomaly become massive. The simplest example is a relevant perturbation of the gauge theory that flows to the CP(n) model. To compute the effective action, we derive a useful set of Feynman rules for (0,2) supergraphs. From the effective action, we see that the infra-red geometry reflects the gauge anomaly by the presence of a boundary at finite distance. In generic examples, there are boundaries, fluxes and branes; the resulting spaces are non-Kahler.

Linear Sigma Models with Torsion

Gauged linear sigma models with (0,2) supersymmetry allow a larger choice of couplings than models with (2,2) supersymmetry. We use this freedom to find a fully linear construction of torsional heterotic compactifications, including models with branes. As a non-compact example, we describe a family of metrics which correspond to deformations of the heterotic conifold by turning on H-flux. We then describe compact models which are gauge-invariant only at the quantum level. Our construction gives a generalization of symplectic reduction. The resulting spaces are non-Kahler analogues of familiar toric spaces like complex projective space. Perturbatively conformal models can be constructed by considering intersections.

Novel Branches of (0,2) Theories

We show that recently proposed linear sigma models with torsion can be obtained from unconventional branches of conventional gauge theories. This observation puts models with log interactions on firm footing. If non-anomalous multiplets are integrated out, the resulting low-energy theory involves log interactions of neutral fields. For these cases, we find a sigma model geometry which is both non-toric and includes brane sources. These are heterotic sigma models with branes. Surprisingly, there are massive models with compact complex non-Kahler target spaces, which include brane/anti-brane sources. The simplest conformal models describe wrapped heterotic NS5-branes. We present examples of both types.

Constraints on String Cosmology

String theory contains sources like orientifold planes that support higher derivative interactions. These interactions make possible static flux compactifications which are forbidden in supergravity. They can also lead to violations of the strong energy condition (SEC) which is needed for an accelerating universe. We examine how large a violation is possible in the context of the heterotic string compactified to four dimensions. We find that de Sitter solutions are still not possible but that classically forbidden anti-de Sitter solutions are possible.

Quantum Corrections to Heterotic Moduli Potentials

In a recent paper, we derived the leading alpha' corrections to the Kahler potentials for moduli in (0,2) heterotic compactifications. In the same spirit as the LARGE volume stabilization scenario for type IIB orientifolds, we examine whether these quantum corrections, together with a combination of tree-level and non-perturbative superpotentials, are sufficient to stabilize the overall volume modulus at large values. This is not a priori obvious, since the corrections we found are of a lower order than those used in the type IIB setting. Nevertheless, we find that stabilizing the volume at (exponentially) large values may be possible (under certain conditions) in these heterotic backgrounds.

The Leading Quantum Corrections to Stringy Kahler Potentials

The structure of stringy quantum corrections to four-dimensional effective theories is particularly interesting for string phenomenology and attempts to stabilize moduli. We consider the heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau space. For this case, we compute the leading corrections to the kinetic terms of moduli fields. The structure of these corrections is largely dictated by the underlying higher-dimensional extended supersymmetry. We find corrections generically of order (alpha')^2 rather than of order (alpha')^3 found in type II compactifications or heterotic compactifications with the standard embedding. We explore the implications of these corrections for breaking no-scale structure.

One-Loop MHV Amplitudes in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

Using CSW rules for constructing scalar Feynman diagrams from MHV vertices, we compute the contribution of $\mathcal {N}=1$ chiral multiplet to one-loop MHV gluon amplitude. The result agrees with the one obtained previously using unitarity-based methods, thereby demonstrating the validity of the MHV-diagram technique, in the case of one-loop MHV amplitudes, for all massless supersymmetric theories.
