Scaling of energy delivered through an electrostatic discharge to a small series load

We study the energy delivered through a small-resistance series ``victim'' load during electrostatic discharge events in air. For gap lengths over 1~mm, the fraction of the stored energy delivered is mostly gap-length independent, with a slight decrease at larger gaps due to electrode geometry. The energy to the victim scales linearly with circuit capacitance and victim load resistance but is not strongly dependent on circuit inductance. This scaling leads to a simple approach to predicting the maximum energy that will be delivered to a series resistance for the case where the victim load resistance is lower than the spark resistance.

Energy partitioning in electrostatic discharge with variable series load resistor

This paper presents an experimental investigation into the energy partitioning of quasi-static electrostatic discharge (ESD) events in air, a scenario in which the discharge occurs across a gap length that can be considered fixed. We systematically characterize the energy transferred to a series victim load across a broad range of resistances (0.1 to 10,000Ohm) and circuit parameters, including capacitance and gap length. Our results show that the fraction of stored energy delivered to the victim load is largely independent of gap length. We demonstrate that our extension of the classic Rompe-Weizel spark resistance model effectively predicts the scaling of this energy transfer, establishing a clear link between spark resistance and energy partitioning. These findings provide a predictive framework that should be valuable for guiding safety requirements for energetic materials and ignition scenarios and will inform the development of more accurate circuit models that can be applied to a wider range of ESD events such as those found in the electronics industry.

Inflation from Dynamical Projective Connections

We show how the recently developed string-inspired, projectively-invariant gravitational model Thomas-Whitehead gravity (TW gravity) naturally gives rise to a field acting as the inflaton. In the formulation of TW gravity, a field $\mathcal{D}_{ab}$ is introduced into the projective connection components and is related to a rank-two tensor field $\mathcal{P}_{ab}$. Through the dynamical action of TW gravity, in terms of projective curvature, the tensor field $\mathcal{P}_{ab}$ acquires dynamics. By decomposing $\mathcal{P}_{ab}$ into its trace and traceless degrees of freedom, and choosing the connection to be Levi-Civita, we demonstrate that TW gravity contains a non-minimally coupled scalar field with a specific potential. Considering only the trace degrees of freedom, we demonstrate that the scalar field acts as an inflaton in the slow roll approximation. We find a range of values for the parameters introduced by TW gravity that fit the experimental constraints of the most recent cosmological data.
