Manifest duality and Lorentz covariance for linearised gravity as edge modes

We present the first formulation of linearised gravity in four dimensions which is manifestly Lorentz covariant and democratic, i.e. treats the two frames related by electric-magnetic duality on equal footing. It is well-known that four-dimensional linearised gravity belongs to a class of singleton representations of the four-dimensional conformal algebra $\mathfrak{so}(2,4)$. Our key insight is viewing this algebra as the isometry of $\text{AdS}_5$ and realising the massless spin-2 field as an edge mode of a five-dimensional topological field taking values in a specific finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{so}(2,4)$. The desired four-dimensional action is then found by a covariant boundary reduction procedure.

Holomorphic structure of massive scalar fields in $\text{(A)dS}_2$

Scalar field theories in $\text{(A)dS}_{2}$ with integer scaling dimensions $\Delta = k+1$ are characterised by the existence of a pair of (anti-)holomorphic higher-spin currents. We explore the consequences of this to describe their quantisation and subsets of their linear and non-linear symmetries, taking care to treat $\text{AdS}_{2}$ and $\text{dS}_{2}$ separately. In particular, we point out that the theories admit mode expansions reminiscent of standard two-dimensional conformal field theories in complex coordinates, with which we are able to construct operators implementing global conformal and Virasoro symmetry. We further leverage holomorphicity of the currents to show that the full set of symmetries of theories with $k>0$ is captured by a chiral algebra, which is a subalgebra of the one in the $k=0$ (massless) theory. This allows us to identify integrable deformations for $k \in \{0,1,2\}$. We finally observe that a lack of integrable deformations for $k>2$ is a consequence of a known conjecture.

You've got a Freund--Rubin in Me: The Aretakis Instability of Extremal Black Branes

We investigate how the Aretakis instability affects non-dilatonic extremal black $p$-branes by focusing on their near-horizon geometry. Crucially, the strength of the instability, \textit{i.e.} the number of transverse derivatives needed to see non-decay/blow-up of fields on the horizon at late null time, is given by the scaling dimensions with respect to the near-horizon $\mathrm{AdS}_{p+2}$-factor. This renders the problem of determining the severity of the Aretakis instability equivalent to computing the Kaluza--Klein spectrum of fields on Freund--Rubin spaces. We use this to argue that non-dilatonic extremal black branes suffer from the Aretakis instability even in the absence of additional fields -- we find that this is weaker than for extremal black holes. We also argue that the scaling dimensions determine the smoothness of stationary deformations to the original black brane background -- here, our findings indicate that generically more modes can lead to worse curvature singularities compared to extremal black holes.

Deformations of Extremal Black Holes and the UV

It has recently been noted that deformations of extremal AdS black holes in four and higher dimensions are generically non-smooth or singular on the horizon. Further, it was found that certain deformations of asymptotically flat extremal black holes are marginal, causing the nature of the horizon to be strongly sensitive to UV corrections -- in particular, Wilson coefficients associated with consistent UV completions generically lead to worse behaviour on the horizon. In this work, we extend the discussion of deformed horizons in the presence of UV corrections to extremal charged black holes in AdS, where we find a tower of marginal perturbations for different black hole masses. We argue that the apparent UV sensitivity of marginal modes is, in fact, a feature of the UV theory which is correctly reproduced by the EFT, and illustrate this with explicit UV completions confirming the validity of the EFT. We demonstrate that the same holds for a scalar-Maxwell EFT with known UV completion. In the gravitational case, the sign of EFT corrections to marginal perturbations is generally connected with the signs implied by positivity bounds, with UV completions generically leading to worse behaviour on the horizon. We conjecture that this result is more generic, and use this to derive more general positivity bounds motivated by the weak gravity conjecture, which we illustrate with further evidence.

Surfin' pp-waves with Good Vibrations: Causality in the presence of stacked shockwaves

Relativistic causality constrains the $S$-matrix both through its analyticity, and by imposing lower bounds on the scattering time delay. These bounds are easiest to determine for spacetimes which admit either a timelike or null Killing vector. We revisit a class of pp-wave spacetimes and carefully determine the scattering time delay for arbitrary incoming states in the eikonal, semi-classical, and Born approximations. We apply this to the EFT of gravity in arbitrary dimensions. It is well-known that higher-dimension operators such as the Gauss-Bonnet term, when treated perturbatively at low energies, can appear to make both positive and negative contributions to the time delays of the background geometry. We show that even when multiple shockwaves are stacked, the corrections to the scattering time delay relative to the background are generically unresolvable within the regime of validity of the effective field theory so long as the Wilson coefficients are of order unity. This is in agreement with previously derived positivity/bootstrap bounds and the requirement that infrared causality be maintained in consistent low-energy effective theories, irrespective of the UV completion.

A cautionary case of casual causality

We distinguish between the notions of asymptotic causality and infrared causality for gravitational effective field theories, and show that the latter gives constraints consistent with gravitational positivity bounds. We re-explore the scattering of gravitational waves in a spherically symmetric background in the EFT of gravity in $D\ge 5$, for which the leading-order correction to Einstein gravity is determined by the Gauss-Bonnet operator. We reproduce the known result that the truncated effective theory exhibits apparent time advances relative to the background geometry for specific polarisations, which naively signal a violation of causality. We show that by properly identifying the regime of validity of the effective theory, the apparent time advance can be shown to be unresolvable. To illustrate this, we identify specific higher-dimension operators in the EFT expansion which become large for potentially resolvable time advances, rendering the EFT expansion invalid. Our results demonstrate how staying within the confines of the EFT, neither infrared nor asymptotic causality are ever violated for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, no matter how low the scale, and furthermore its causality can be understood without appealing to a precise UV completion such as string theory.

Quantifying athermality and quantum induced deviations from classical fluctuation relations

In recent years a quantum information theoretic framework has emerged for incorporating non-classical phenomena into fluctuation relations. Here we elucidate this framework by exploring deviations from classical fluctuation relations resulting from the athermality of the initial thermal system and quantum coherence of the system's energy supply. In particular we develop Crooks-like equalities for an oscillator system which is prepared either in photon added or photon subtracted thermal states and derive a Jarzynski-like equality for average work extraction. We use these equalities to discuss the extent to which adding or subtracting a photon increases the informational content of a state thereby amplifying the suppression of free energy increasing process. We go on to derive a Crooks-like equality for an energy supply that is prepared in a pure binomial state, leading to a non-trivial contribution from energy and coherence on the resultant irreversibility. We show how the binomial state equality fits in relation to a previously derived coherent state equality and offers a richer feature-set.
