Vertex operator algebra bundles on modular curves and their associated modular forms

This paper describes the vector bundle on the elliptic modular curve that is associated to a vertex operator algebra $V$ (VOA) or more generally a quasi-vertex operator algebra (QVOA), with a view towards future applications aimed at studying the characters of VOAs. We explain how the modes of sections of $V$ give rise naturally to $V$-valued quasi-modular forms. The space $Q(V)$ of $V$-valued quasi-modular forms is endowed with the structure of a doubled QVOA, and in particular the algebra $Q$ of quasi-modular forms is itself a doubled QVOA. $Q(V)$ also admits a natural derivative operator arising from the connection on the bundle defined by $V$ and the modular derivative, which we call the raising operator. We introduce an associated lowering operator $\Lambda$ on $Q(V)$ having the property that the $V$-valued modular forms $M(V)\subseteq Q(V)$ are the kernel of $\Lambda$. This extends the classical theory of scalar-valued quasi-modular forms. We exhibit an explicit isomorphism of $M(V)$ with $M \otimes V$. Finally, the coordinate invariance of vertex operators implies that $M(V)$ has a natural Hecke theory, and we use this isomorphism to fully describe the Hecke eigensystems: they are the same as the systems of eigenvalues that arise from scalar-valued quasi-modular forms.

An Improved Lower Bound on the Image of the 2-adic Character Map for the Heisenberg Algebra via Modular Linear Differential Equations

We describe families of MLDEs whose solutions are modular forms of level one that converge, $2$-adically, to a Hauptmodul on $\Gamma_0(2)$ by using a theorem of Serre. Then, we apply this to show that the image of the character map on the $2$-adic Heisenberg VOA $S_{1}$ contains the space of $2$-adic overconvergent modular forms $M_{2}^{\dagger}(1/2)$ of weight zero.

The moduli space of representations of the modular group into $G_2$

In this paper we construct a large four-dimensional family of representations of the modular group into $G_2$. Precisely, this family is an etale cover of degree $96$ of an open subset of the moduli space of such representations. This moduli space has two main components, of dimensions one and four. The one-dimensional component consists of well-studied rigid representations, in the sense of Katz. We focus on the four-dimensional component which consists of representations that are not rigid. We also provide algebraic conditions to ensure that the specializations surject onto $G_2(\mathbf{F}_p)$ for primes $p\geq 5$. These representations give new examples of $\phi$-congruence subgroups of the modular group as introduced in previous work.

Density formulas for $p$-adically bounded primes for hypergeometric series with rational and quadratic irrational parameters

We study densities of $p$-adically bounded primes for hypergeometric series in two cases: the case of generalized hypergeometric series with rational parameters, and the case of $_2F_1$ with parameters in a quadratic extension of the rational numbers. In the rational case we extend work from $_2F_1$ to $_nF_{n-1}$ for an exact formula giving the density of bounded primes for the series. The density is shown to be one exactly in accordance with the case of finite monodromy as classified by Beukers-Heckmann. In the quadratic irrational case, we obtain an unconditional lower bound on the density of bounded primes. Assuming the normality of the $p$-adic digits of quadratic irrationalities, this lower bound is shown to be an exact formula for the density of bounded primes. In the quadratic irrational case, there is a trivial upper bound of $1/2$ on the density of bounded primes. In the final section of the paper we discuss some results and computations on series that attain this bound. In particular, all such examples we have found are associated to imaginary quadratic fields, though we do not prove this is always the case.

Invitation to $p$-adic vertex algebras

An overview of the authors' ideas about the process of completing a $p$-adically normed space in the setting of vertex operator algebras. We focus in particular on the $p$-adic Heisenberg VOA and its connections with $p$-adic modular forms.

On $p$-adic modularity in the $p$-adic Heisenberg algebra

We establish existence theorems for the image of the normalized character map of the $p$-adic Heisenberg algebra $S$ taking values in the algebra of Serre $p$-adic modular forms $M_p$. In particular, we describe the construction of an analytic family of states in $S$ whose character values are the well-known $\Lambda$-adic family of $p$-adic Eisenstein series of level one built from classical Eisenstein series. This extends previous work treating a specialization at weight $2$, and illustrates that the image of the character map contains nonzero $p$-adic modular forms of every $p$-adic weight. In a different direction, we prove that for $p=2$ the image of the rescaled character map contains every overconvergent $2$-adic modular form of weight zero and tame level one; in particular, it contains the polynomial algebra $\mathbf{Q}_2[j^{-1}]$. For general primes $p$, we study the square-bracket formalism for $S$ and develop the idea that although states in $S$ do not generally have a conformal weight, they can acquire a $p$-adic weight in the sense of Serre.

Characters in p-adic Heisenberg and Lattice Vertex Operator Algebras

We study characters of states in $p$-adic vertex operator algebras. In particular, we show that the image of the character map for both the $p$-adic Heisenberg and $p$-adic lattice vertex operator algebras contain infinitely-many non-classical $p$-adic modular forms which are not contained in the image of the algebraic character map.

p-adic vertex operator algebras

We postulate axioms for a chiral half of a nonarchimedean 2-dimensional bosonic conformal field theory, that is, a vertex operator algebra in which a p-adic Banach space replaces the traditional Hilbert space. We study some consequences of our axioms leading to the construction of various examples, including p-adic commutative Banach rings and p-adic versions of the Virasoro, Heisenberg, and the Moonshine module vertex operator algebras. Serre p-adic modular forms occur naturally in some of these examples as limits of classical 1-point functions.

Families of $\phi$-congruence subgroups of the modular group

We introduce and study families of finite index subgroups of the modular group that generalize the congruence subgroups. Such groups, termed $\phi$-congruence subgroups, are obtained by reducing homomorphisms $\phi$ from the modular group into a linear algebraic group modulo integers. In particular, we examine two families of examples, arising on the one hand from a map into a quasi-unipotent group, and on the other hand from maps into symplectic groups of degree four. In the quasi-unipotent case we also provide a detailed discussion of the corresponding modular forms, using the fact that the tower of curves in this case contains the tower of isogenies over the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3-1728$ defined by the commutator subgroup of the modular group.

Character Vectors of Strongly Regular Vertex Operator Algebras

We summarize interactions between vertex operator algebras and number theory through the lens of Zhu theory. The paper begins by recalling basic facts on vertex operator algebras (VOAs) and modular forms, and then explains Zhu's theorem on characters of VOAs in a slightly new form. We then axiomatize the desirable properties of modular forms that have played a role in Zhu's theorem and related classification results of VOAs. After this we summarize known classification results in rank two, emphasizing the geometric theory of vector-valued modular forms as a means for simplifying the discussion. We conclude by summarizing some known examples, and by providing some new examples, in higher ranks. In particular, the paper contains a number of potential character vectors that could plausibly correspond to a VOA, but such that the existence of a corresponding hypothetical VOA is presently unknown.

Eisenstein Metrics

We study families of metrics on automorphic vector bundles associated to representations of the modular group. These metrics are defined using an Eisenstein series construction. We show that in certain cases, the residue of these Eisenstein metrics at their rightmost pole is a harmonic metric for the underlying representation of the modular group. The last section of the paper considers the case of a family of representations that are indecomposable but not irreducible. The analysis of the corresponding Eisenstein metrics, and the location of their rightmost pole, is an open question whose resolution depends on the asymptotics of matrix-valued Kloosterman sums.

Classification of some vertex operator algebras of rank 3

We discuss the classification of strongly regular vertex operator algebras (VOAs) with exactly three simple modules whose character vector satisfies a monic modular linear differential equation with irreducible monodromy. Our Main Theorem provides a classification of all such VOAs in the form of one infinite family of affine VOAs, one individual affine algebra and two Virasoro algebras, together with a family of eleven exceptional character vectors and associated data that we call the $U$-series. We prove that there are at least $15$ VOAs in the $U$-series occurring as commutants in a Schellekens list holomorphic VOA. These include the affine algebra $E_{8,2}$ and Höhn's Baby Monster VOA $\mathbf{VB}^\natural_{(0)}$ but the other $13$ seem to be new. The idea in the proof of our Main Theorem is to exploit properties of a family of vector-valued modular forms with rational functions as Fourier coefficients, which solves a family of modular linear differential equations in terms of generalized hypergeometric series.

Nonabelian Hodge theory and vector valued modular forms

We examine the relationship between nonabelian Hodge theory for Riemann surfaces and the theory of vector valued modular forms. In particular, we explain how one might use this relationship to prove a conjectural three-term inequality on the weights of free bases of vector valued modular forms associated to complex, finite dimensional, irreducible representations of the modular group. This conjecture is known for irreducible unitary representations and for all irreducible representations of dimension at most 12. We prove new instances of the three-term inequality for certain nonunitary representations, corresponding to a class of maximally-decomposed variations of Hodge structure, by considering the same inequality with respect to a new type of modular form, called a "Higgs form", that arises naturally on the Dolbeault side of nonabelian Hodge theory. The paper concludes with a discussion of a strategy for reducing the general case of nilpotent Higgs bundles to the case under consideration in our main theorem.

Constructions of vector-valued modular forms of rank four and level one

This paper studies modular forms of rank four and level one. There are two possiblities for the isomorphism type of the space of modular forms that can arise from an irreducible representation of the modular group of rank four, and we describe when each case occurs for general choices of exponents for the T -matrix. In the remaining sections we describe how to write down corresponding differential equations satisfied by minimal weight forms, and how to use these minimal weight forms to describe the entire graded module of holomorphic modular forms. Unfortunately the differential equations that arise can only be solved recursively in general. We conclude the paper by studying the cases of tensor products of two-dimensional representations, symmetric cubes of two-dimensional representations, and inductions of two-dimensional representations of the subgroup of the modular group of index two. In these cases the differential equations satisfied by minimal weight forms can be solved exactly.

Densities of bounded primes for hypergeometric series with rational parameters

The set of primes where a hypergeomeric series with rational parameters is $p$-adically bounded is known by [10] to have a Dirichlet density. We establish a formula for this Dirichlet density and conjecture that it is rare for the density to be large. We prove this conjecture for hypergeometric series whose parameters have denominators equal to a prime of the form $p = 2q^r + 1$, where $q$ is an odd prime, by establishing an upper bound on the density of bounded primes in this case. The general case remains open. This paper is the output of an undergraduate research course taught by the first listed author in the winter semester of 2018.

Generating weights for the Weil representation attached to an even order cyclic quadratic module

We develop geometric methods to study the generating weights of free modules of vector valued modular forms of half-integral weight, taking values in a complex representation of the metaplectic group. We then compute the generating weights for modular forms taking values in the Weil representation attached to cyclic quadratic modules of order 2p^r, where p is a prime greater than three. We also show that the generating weights approach a simple limiting distribution as p grows, or as r grows and p remains fixed.

On unbounded denominators and hypergeometric series

We study the question of when the coefficients of a hypergeometric series are p-adically unbounded for a given rational prime p. Our first main result is a necessary and sufficient criterion (applicable to all but finitely many primes) for determining when the coefficients of a hypergeometric series with rational parameters are p-adically unbounded. This criterion is then used to show that the set of unbounded primes for a given series is, up to a finite discrepancy, a finite union of primes in arithmetic progressions. This set can be computed explicitly. We characterize when the density of the set of unbounded primes is 0, and when it is 1. Finally, we discuss the connection between this work and the unbounded denominators conjecture concerning Fourier coefficients of modular forms.
