The Fine Structure of the Singular Set of Area-Minimizing Integral Currents III: Frequency 1 Flat Singular Points and $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. Uniqueness of Tangent Cones

We consider an area-minimizing integral current $T$ of codimension higher than 1 ins a smooth Riemannian manifold $Σ$. We prove that $T$ has a unique tangent cone, which is a superposition of planes, at $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. point in its support. In combination with works of the first and third authors, we conclude that the singular set of $T$ is countably $(m-2)$-rectifiable.

Excess decay for minimizing hypercurrents mod $2Q$

We consider codimension $1$ area-minimizing $m$-dimensional currents $T$ mod an even integer $p=2Q$ in a $C^2$ Riemannian submanifold $Σ$ of the Euclidean space. We prove a suitable excess-decay estimate towards the unique tangent cone at every point $q\in \mathrm{spt} (T)\setminus \mathrm{spt}^p (\partial T)$ where at least one such tangent cone is $Q$ copies of a single plane. While an analogous decay statement was proved in arXiv:2111.11202 as a corollary of a more general theory for stable varifolds, in our statement we strive for the optimal dependence of the estimates upon the second fundamental form of $Σ$. This technical improvement is in fact needed in arXiv:2201.10204 to prove that the singular set of $T$ can be decomposed into a $C^{1,α}$ $(m-1)$-dimensional submanifold and an additional closed remaining set of Hausdorff dimension at most $m-2$.

An elementary rectifiability lemma and some applications

We generalize a classical theorem of Besicovitch, showing that, for any positive integers $k<n$, if $E\subset \mathbb R^n$ is a Souslin set which is not $\mathcal{H}^k$-$σ$-finite, then $E$ contains a purely unrectifiable closed set $F$ with $0< \mathcal{H}^k (F) < \infty$. Therefore, if $E\subset \mathbb R^n$ is a Souslin set with the property that every closed subset with finite $\mathcal{H}^k$ measure is $k$-rectifiable, then $E$ is $k$-rectifiable. We also point out that this theorem holds in a suitable class of metric spaces. Our interest is motivated by recent studies of the structure of the singular sets of several objects in geometric analysis and we explain the usefulness of our lemma with some examples.

A remark on the uniqueness of solutions to hyperbolic conservation laws

Given a strictly hyperbolic $n\times n$ system of conservation laws, it is well known that there exists a unique Lipschitz semigroup of weak solutions, defined on a domain of functions with small total variation, which are limits of vanishing viscosity approximations. Aim of this note is to prove that every weak solution taking values in the domain of the semigroup, and whose shocks satisfy the Liu admissibility conditions, actually coincides with a semigroup trajectory.

Instability and nonuniqueness for the $2d$ Euler equations in vorticity form, after M. Vishik

In this expository work, we present Vishik's theorem on non-unique weak solutions to the two-dimensional Euler equations on the whole space, \[ \partial_t ω+ u \cdot \nabla ω= f \, , \quad u = \frac{1}{2π} \frac{x^\perp}{|x|^2} \ast ω\, , \] with initial vorticity $ω_0 \in L^1 \cap L^p$ and $f \in L^1_t (L^1 \cap L^p)_x$, $p < \infty$. His theorem demonstrates, in particular, the sharpness of the Yudovich class. An important intermediate step is the rigorous construction of an unstable vortex, which is of independent physical and mathematical interest. We follow the strategy of Vishik but allow ourselves certain deviations in the proof and substantial deviations in our presentation, which emphasizes the underlying dynamical point of view.

Onsager critical solutions of the forced Navier-Stokes equations

We answer positively to [BDL22, Question 2.4] by building new examples of solutions to the forced 3d-Navier-Stokes equations with vanishing viscosity, which exhibit anomalous dissipation and which enjoy uniform bounds in the space $L_t^3 C_x^{1/3 - \varepsilon}$, for any fixed $\varepsilon >0$. Our construction combines ideas of [BDL22] and [CCS22].

Anomalous dissipation for the forced 3D Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we consider the forced incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with vanishing viscosity on the three-dimensional torus. We show that there are (classical) solutions for which the dissipation rate of the kinetic energy is bounded away from zero, uniformly in the viscosity parameter, while the body forces are uniformly bounded in some reasonable regularity class.

Fine structure of the singular set of area minimizing hypersurfaces modulo $p$

Consider an area minimizing current modulo $p$ of dimension $m$ in a smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension $m+1$. We prove that its interior singular set is, up to a relatively closed set of dimension at most $m-2$, a $C^{1,α}$ submanifold of dimension $m-1$ at which, locally, $N\leq p$ regular sheets of the current join transversally, each sheet counted with a positive multiplicity $k_i$ so that $\sum_i k_i = p$. This completes the analysis of the structure of the singular set of area minimizing hypersurfaces modulo $p$, initiated by J. Taylor for $m=2$ and $p=3$ and extended by the authors to arbitrary $m$ and all odd $p$ in arXiv:2105.08135. We tackle the remaining case of even $p$ by showing that the set of singular points admitting a flat blow-up is of codimension at least two in the current. First, we prove a structural result for the singularities of minimizers in the linearized problem, by combining an epiperimetric inequality with an analysis of homogeneous minimizers to conclude that the corresponding degrees of homogeneity are always integers; second, we refine Almgren's blow-up procedure to prove that all flat singularities of the current persist as singularities of the $\mathrm{Dir}$-minimizing limit. An important ingredient of our analysis is the uniqueness of flat tangent cones at singular points, recently established by Minter and Wickramasekera in arXiv:2111.11202.

Uniqueness of boundary tangent cones for $2$-dimensional area-minimizing currents

In this paper we show that, if $T$ is an area-minimizing $2$-dimensional integral current with $\partial T = Q [\![ Γ]\!]$, where $Γ$ is a $C^{1,α}$ curve for $α>0$ and $Q$ an arbitrary integer, then $T$ has a unique tangent cone at every boundary point, with a polynomial convergence rate. The proof is a simple reduction to the case $Q=1$, studied by Hirsch and Marini.

An Allard-type boundary regularity theorem for $2d$ minimizing currents at smooth curves with arbitrary multiplicity

We consider integral area-minimizing $2$-dimensional currents $T$ in $U\subset \mathbb R^{2+n}$ with $\partial T = Q[\![Γ]\!]$, where $Q\in \mathbb N \setminus \{0\}$ and $Γ$ is sufficiently smooth. We prove that, if $q\in Γ$ is a point where the density of $T$ is strictly below $\frac{Q+1}{2}$, then the current is regular at $q$. The regularity is understood in the following sense: there is a neighborhood of $q$ in which $T$ consists of a finite number of regular minimal submanifolds meeting transversally at $Γ$ (and counted with the appropriate integer multiplicity). In view of well-known examples, our result is optimal, and it is the first nontrivial generalization of a classical theorem of Allard for $Q=1$. As a corollary, if $Ω\subset \mathbb R^{2+n}$ is a bounded uniformly convex set and $Γ\subset \partial Ω$ a smooth $1$-dimensional closed submanifold, then any area-minimizing current $T$ with $\partial T = Q [\![Γ]\!]$ is regular in a neighborhood of $Γ$.

On the boundary behavior of mass-minimizing integral currents

Let $Σ$ be a smooth Riemannian manifold, $Γ\subset Σ$ a smooth closed oriented submanifold of codimension higher than $2$ and $T$ an integral area-minimizing current in $Σ$ which bounds $Γ$. We prove that the set of regular points of $T$ at the boundary is dense in $Γ$. Prior to our theorem the existence of any regular point was not known, except for some special choice of $Σ$ and $Γ$. As a corollary we answer to a question of Almgren about the connectivity of minimizers.

Smoothing does not give a selection principle for transport equations with bounded autonomous fields

We give an example of a bounded divergence free autonomous vector field in $\mathbb R^3$ (and of a nonautonomous bounded divergence free vector field in $\mathbb R^2$) and of a bounded initial data for which the Cauchy problem for the corresponding transport equation has $2$ distinct solutions. We then show that both solutions are limits of classical solutions of transport equations for appropriate smoothings of the vector fields and of the initial data.

Area minimizing currents mod $2Q$: linear regularity theory

We establish a theory of $Q$-valued functions minimizing a suitable generalization of the Dirichlet integral. In a second paper the theory will be used to approximate efficiently area minimizing currents $\mathrm{mod}(p)$ when $p=2Q$, and to establish a first general partial regularity theorem for every $p$ in any dimension and codimension.

Regularity of area minimizing currents mod $p$

We establish a first general partial regularity theorem for area minimizing currents $\mathrm{mod}(p)$, for every $p$, in any dimension and codimension. More precisely, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the interior singular set of an $m$-dimensional area minimizing current $\mathrm{mod}(p)$ cannot be larger than $m-1$. Additionally, we show that, when $p$ is odd, the interior singular set is $(m-1)$-rectifiable with locally finite $(m-1)$-dimensional measure.

On Non-uniqueness of Hölder continuous globally dissipative Euler flows

We show that for any $\al<\frac 17$ there exist $\al$-Hölder continuous weak solutions of the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equation, which satisfy the local energy inequality and strictly dissipate the total kinetic energy. The proof relies on the convex integration scheme and the main building blocks of the solution are various Mikado flows with disjoint supports in space and time.
