One Ring to Rule Them All: A Unified Topological Framework for 4D Superconformal Anomalies

We present a unified topological description of anomalies that generalizes the Chern-Simons formulation of Yang-Mills anomalies to encompass all 4-dimensional superconformal anomalies. The key innovation is our characterization of anomalies through the constraint ideal in the polynomial ring of generalized curvatures and connections of the underlying symmetry (super)-Lie algebra. We demonstrate that anomalies in dimension $d$ are captured by the cohomology $H_δ(W_{d+2})$ of the generalized BRST operator $δ$ acting on the fermion number $d+2$ component of the constraint ideal $W_{d+2}$. While Yang-Mills anomalies correspond to invariant Chern curvature polynomials (where $W_{d+2}$ reduces to homogeneous curvature polynomials), the constraint ideal for 4D (super)conformal gravity contains additional polynomials mixing curvatures and connections. This richer structure naturally explains the coexistence of both Chern-type ($a$) and non-Chern-type ($c$) anomalies in (super)conformal theories.

Superconformal anomalies from superconformal Chern-Simons polynomials

We consider the 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ Lie superconformal algebra and search for completely "symmetric" (in the graded sense) 3-index invariant tensors. The solution we find is unique and we show that the corresponding invariant polynomial cubic in the generalized curvatures of superconformal gravity vanishes. Consequently, the associated Chern-Simons polynomial is a non-trivial anomaly cocycle. We explicitly compute this cocycle to all orders in the independent fields of superconformal gravity and establish that it is BRST equivalent to the so-called superconformal $a$-anomaly. We briefly discuss the possibility that the superconformal $c$-anomaly also admits a similar Chern-Simons formulation and the potential holographic, 5-dimensional, interpretation of our results.

Deformations of Supergravity and Supersymmetry Anomalies

We present a BRST analysis of supersymmetry anomalies of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories with anomalous R symmetry. To this end, we consider the coupling of the matter theory to classical $\mathcal{N} = 1$ new minimal supergravity. We point out that a supersymmetry anomaly cocycle associated to the $\mathrm{U}(1){}_\mathrm{R}$ field does exist for this theory. It is non-trivial in the space of supergravity fields (and ghosts), but it becomes BRST-exact in the functional space that includes antifields. Equivalently, the $\mathrm{U}(1){}_\mathrm{R}$ supersymmetry anomaly cocycle vanishes "on-shell". It is therefore removable. However, to remove it -- precisely because it is not trivial in the smaller space of fields -- one needs to deform the supergravity BRST operator. This deformation is triggered, at first order in the anomaly coefficient, by a local operator $S_1$ of ghost number 1. We give a cohomological characterization of $S_1$ and compute it in full detail. At higher orders in the anomaly coefficient, we expect a priori that further deformations of the BRST rules are necessary.

The topological structure of supergravity: an application to supersymmetric localization

The BRST algebra of supergravity is characterized by two different bilinears of the commuting supersymmetry ghosts: a vector $γ^μ$ and a scalar $ϕ$, the latter valued in the Yang-Mills Lie algebra. We observe that under BRST transformations $γ$ and $ϕ$ transform as the superghosts of, respectively, topological gravity and topological Yang-Mills coupled to topological gravity. This topological structure sitting inside any supergravity leads to universal equivariant cohomological equations for the curvatures 2-forms which hold on supersymmetric bosonic backgrounds. Additional equivariant cohomological equations can be derived for supersymmetric backgrounds of supergravities for which certain gauge invariant scalar bilinears of the commuting ghosts exist. Among those, $N= (2,2)$ in $d=2$, which we discuss in detail in this paper, and $N=2$ in $d=4$.

New Supersymmetric Localizations from Topological Gravity

Supersymmetric field theories can be studied exactly on suitable off-shell supergravity backgrounds. We show that in two dimensions such backgrounds are identifiable with BRST invariant backgrounds of topological gravity coupled to an abelian topological gauge multiplet. This latter background is required for the consistent coupling of the topological `matter' YM theory to topological gravity. We make use of this topological point of view to obtain, in a simple and straightforward way, a complete classification of localizing supersymmetric backgrounds in two dimensions. The BRST invariant topological backgrounds are parametrized by both Killing vectors and $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of the 2-dimensional world-sheet. We reconstruct completely the supergravity backgrounds from the topological data: some of the supergravity fields are twisted versions of the topological backgrounds, but others are "composite", i.e. they are non-linear functionals of them. We recover all the known localizing 2-dimensional backgrounds and (infinitely) many more that have not been explored so far. We show that the supersymmetric $Ω$-deformation is nothing but the background value of the ghost-for-ghost of topological gravity, a result which holds for other dimensions too. The new localizing backgrounds are characterized by non-trivial fluxes for both the graviphotons of the supergravity multiplet.

B-strings on non-Kählerian manifolds

We explain how to couple topological B-models whose targets are non-Kählerian manifolds to topological gravity and to thus define corresponding topological strings. We emphasize the need to take into account the coupling to the superghost field of topological gravity in order to obtain a consistent definition of the string model. We also review the importance of the superghost for correctly interpreting the holomorphic anomaly of the string amplitudes. We perform our analysis in the BV framework in order to make it completely gauge independent.

Topological anomalies for Seifert 3-manifolds

We study globally supersymmetric 3d gauge theories on curved manifolds by describing the coupling of 3d topological gauge theories, with both Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons terms in the action, to background topological gravity. In our approach the Seifert condition for manifolds supporting global supersymmetry is elegantly deduced from the topological gravity BRST transformations. A cohomological characterization of the geometrical moduli which affect the partition function is obtained. In the Seifert context Chern-Simons topological (framing) anomaly is BRST trivial. We compute explicitly the corresponding local Wess-Zumino functional. As an application, we obtain the dependence on the Seifert moduli of the partition function of 3d supersymmetric gauge theory on the squashed sphere by solving the anomalous topological Ward identities, in a regularization independent way and without the need of evaluating any functional determinant.

Weak Coupling Expansion of Yang-Mills Theory on Recursive Infinite Genus Surfaces

We analyze the partition function of two dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a family of surfaces of infinite genus. These surfaces have a recursive structure, which was used by one of us to compute the partition function that results in a generalized Migdal formula. In this paper we study the `small area' (weak coupling) expansion of the partition function, by exploiting the fact that the generalized Migdal formula is analytic in the (complexification of the) Euler characteristic. The structure of the perturbative part of the weak coupling expansion suggests that the moduli space of flat connections (of the SU(2) and SO(3) theories) on these infinite genus surfaces are well defined, perhaps in an appropriate regularization.

Holomorphic Chern-Simons theory coupled to off-shell Kodaira-Spencer gravity

We construct an action for holomorphic Chern-Simons theory that couples the gauge field to off-shell gravitational backgrounds, comprising the complex structure and the (3,0)-form of the target space. Gauge invariance of the off-shell action is achieved by enlarging the field space to include an appropriate system of Lagrange multipliers, ghost and ghost-for-ghost fields. Both the BRST transformations and the BV action are compactly and neatly written in terms of superfields which include fields, backgrounds and their antifields. We show that the anti-holomorphic target space derivative can be written as a BRST-commutator on a functional space containing the anti-fields of both the dynamical fields and the gravitational backgrounds. We derive from this result a Ward identity that determines the anti-holomorphic dependence of physical correlators.

The Coupling of Chern-Simons Theory to Topological Gravity

We couple Chern-Simons gauge theory to 3-dimensional topological gravity with the aim of investigating its quantum topological invariance. We derive the relevant BRST rules and Batalin-Vilkovisky action. Standard BRST transformations of the gauge field are modified by terms involving both its anti-field and the super-ghost of topological gravity. Beyond the obvious couplings to the metric and the gravitino, the BV action includes hitherto neglected couplings to the super-ghost. We use this result to determine the topological anomalies of certain higher ghost deformations of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory, introduced years ago by Witten. In the context of topological strings these anomalies, which generalize the familiar framing anomaly, are expected to be cancelled by couplings of the closed string sector. We show that such couplings are obtained by dressing the closed string field with topological gravity observables.

The Spectrum of Open String Field Theory at the Stable Tachyonic Vacuum

We present a level (10,30) numerical computation of the spectrum of quadratic fluctuations of Open String Field Theory around the tachyonic vacuum, both in the scalar and in the vector sector. Our results are consistent with Sen's conjecture about gauge-triviality of the small excitations. The computation is sufficiently accurate to provide robust evidence for the absence of the photon from the open string spectrum. We also observe that ghost string field propagators develop double poles. We show that this requires non-empty BRST cohomologies at non-standard ghost numbers. We comment about the relations of our results with recent work on the same subject.

The Kontsevich Connection on the Moduli Space of FZZT Liouville Branes

We point out that insertions of matrix fields in (connected amputated) amplitudes of (generalized) Kontsevich models are given by covariant derivatives with respect to the Kontsevich moduli. This implies that correlators are sections of symmetric products of the (holomorphic) tangent bundle on the (complexified) moduli space of FZZT Liouville branes. We discuss the relation of Kontsevich parametrization of moduli space with that provided by either the (p,1) or the (1,p) boundary conformal field theories. It turns out that the Kontsevich connection captures the contribution of contact terms to open string amplitudes of boundary cosmological constant operators in the (1,p) minimal string models. The curvature of the connection is of type (1,1) and has delta-function singularities at the points in moduli space where Kontsevich kinetic term vanishes. We also outline the extention of our formalism to the c=1 string at self-dual radius and discuss the problems that have to be understood to reconciliate first and second quantized approaches in this case.

Physical States at the Tachyonic Vacuum of Open String Field Theory

We illustrate a method for computing the number of physical states of open string theory at the stable tachyonic vacuum in level truncation approximation. The method is based on the analysis of the gauge-fixed open string field theory quadratic action that includes Fadeev-Popov ghost string fields. Computations up to level 9 in the scalar sector are consistent with Sen's conjecture about the absence of physical open string states at the tachyonic vacuum. We also derive a long exact cohomology sequence that relates relative and absolute cohomologies of the BRS operator at the non-perturbative vacuum. We use this exact result in conjunction with our numerical findings to conclude that the higher ghost number non-perturbative BRS cohomologies are non-empty.

The Holomorphic Anomaly of Topological Strings

We show that the BRS operator of the topological string B model is not holomorphic in the complex structure of the target space. This implies that the so-called holomorphic anomaly of topological strings should not be interpreted as a BRS anomaly.

A Lagrangian Formulation of 2-Dimensional Topological Gravity and Čech-De-Rham Cohomology

We present a very simplified analysis of how one can overcome the Gribov problem in a non-abelian gauge theory. Our formulae, albeit quite simplified, show that possible breakdowns of the Slavnov-Taylor identity could in principle come from singularities in space of gauge orbits. To test these ideas we exhibit the calculation of a very simple correlation function of 2-dimensional topological gravity and we show how in this model the singularities of the moduli space induce a breakdown of the Slavnov-Taylor identity. We comment on the technical relevance of the possibility of including the singularities into a finite number of cells of the moduli space.

Matrix Models, Quantum Penner Action and Two-Dimensional String Theory

A very elementary model of a single positive hermitian random matrix coupled to an external matrix is defined and studied. Expanding the exact effective action around its classical solution leads to the ``quantum Penner action'', from which a rich structure of correlation functions is obtained. These are shown to be equal to the all-orders perturbative expansion of tachyon amplitudes in the two-dimensional string at self-dual radius.

The Topological Matrix Model Of c=1 String

We derive a Kontsevich-type matrix model for the c=1 string directly from the W-infinity solution of the theory. The model that we obtain is different from previous proposals, which are proven to be incorrect. Our matrix model contains the Penner and Kontsevich cases, and we study its quantum effective action. The simplicity of our model leads to an encouraging interpretation in the context of background-independent noncritical string field theory.

Topological 2D String Theory: Higher-genus Amplitudes and W-infinity Identities

We investigate Landau-Ginzburg string theory with the singular superpotential X^{-1} on arbitrary Riemann surfaces. This theory, which is a topological version of the c=1 string at the self-dual radius, is solved using results from intersection theory and from the analysis of matter Landau-Ginzburg systems, and consistency requirements. Higher-genus amplitudes decompose as a sum of contributions from the bulk and the boundary of moduli space. These amplitudes generate the W-infinity algebra.
