An 11-Year Catalog of Gamma-Ray Transients: A Comprehensive Search with Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor Data

The Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on board Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has produced the largest database of all-sky observations in gamma rays with its continuous data with high time and energy resolutions. These data contain a wealth of unidentified transient events that did not trigger the detectors for various reasons. We conducted extensive searches to identify such untriggered transient events observed with GBM in 11 years (July 2010 - June 2021). In particular, we employed four different search modes with various energy ranges (mainly below 300 keV) and time resolutions (from 8 ms to 2 s), utilizing three statistical methods (signal-to-noise ratio, Poisson, and Bayesian statistics), each with different effectiveness in identifying specific classes of transients. Moreover, we developed algorithms for known-event flagging as well as unknown-event classification for our candidate events found in the searches. In this paper, we present our search methodologies, event flagging and classification algorithms and the resulting comprehensive event catalog. The catalog contains more than a million events in total, including known events such as gamma-ray bursts, soft-gamma repeater bursts, galactic X-ray source activities, terrestrial gamma flashes, and solar flares. For each candidate event, the catalog presents the event time, detection significance, event duration, hardness ratios, known-event flagging results, and classification probabilities. Our short-transient catalog significantly expands the currently-existing list of known events and complements the GBM trigger catalog. The event database with filtering capabilities is also publicly available at https://magnetars.sabanciuniv.edu/gbm, which allows users to retrieve event information based on their input queries along with the event lightcurves.

The 2020 Superburst of 4U 1608-522 and its impact on the accretion disk

Superbursts are rare events observed from bursting neutron star low mass X-ray binaries. They are thought to originate from unstable burning of the thick layer of Carbon on the surface of the neutron star, causing the observed X-ray flashes to last several hours. Given their fluence it has long been thought that superbursts may have significant effects on the accretion flow around the neutron star. In this paper, we first present evidence for a new superburst observed from 4U 1608-522 by MAXI during the 2020 outburst, around 00:45 UTC on 16 July 2020. We compare some of the properties of this superburst and the underlying outburst with the events recorded on May 5 2005 by RXTE and most recently in 2025 by MAXI. We then present our spectral analysis of NICER and Insight-HXMT data obtained before and after the 2020 superburst event. Our results indicate that the inner disk temperature and the radius show a systematic evolution in the following few days, which may be related to the superburst. We show that the timescale of the observed evolution can not be governed by viscous timescales unless the viscosity parameter is unrealistically low.

Overview to the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) Satellite

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. Here we give an overview of the mission and its progresses, including payload, core sciences, ground calibration/facility, ground segment, data archive, software, in-orbit performance, calibration, background model, observations and some preliminary results.

X-Ray spectral evolution of PSR~J2032+4127 during the 2017 periastron passage

We report X-ray data analysis results obtained from Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and Swift observations of PSR J2032+4127 taken before, during, and after the periastron on 2017 November 13. We found the first clear evidence of a change in the X-ray spectral index over the passage period, thanks to a broad and sensitive spectral coverage by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. We analysed the joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation epochs with power-law and broken power-law model. We have obtained change in spectral parameters before and after the periastron passage for both models. The spectra get softened after the passage. The evolution of the spectral index and break energy before and after the periastron may indicate a change in the physical state of shock-accelerated electrons.

Dense matter with eXTP

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s.

Swift Observations of the bright uncatalogued X-ray transient MAXI J1535-571

The black hole candidate MAXI J1535-571 is a recently discovered X-ray transient. We report on the monitoring observations of Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Mission during outburst. The source transits from the hard state to the intermediate state, and reaches the soft state; near the end of the outburst, it returns to the hard state passing through the low intermediate state, following a typical Q-shaped loop in the hardness-intensity diagram. During the high intermediate state, detailed spectral analyses using a multi-temperature disk model reveal that the disk luminosity is flatter than the inner disk temperature to the fourth power, and the disk temperature profile varies as the disk radius raised to the power of -0.5, consistent with the behavior of a slim disk, implying that the disk structure has been modified due to the high luminosity of ~ 10^{39} erg/s. Meanwhile, the column density increases with the Eddington ratio, suggesting that the outflow matters are driven by radiation pressure due to the high accretion rate.

Analytical Representation for Equations of State of Dense Matter

We present an analytical unified representation for 22 equations of state (EoS) of dense matter in neutron stars. Such analytical representations can be useful for modeling neutron star structure in modified theories of gravity with high order derivatives.
