Walsh Spectrum and Boomerang Properties of Locally-APN Niho Functions

Recently, the Walsh spectrum and boomerang properties of special power functions have aroused widespread research interest, owing to their important applications in cryptography and information security. In particular, locally-APN functions may offer superior resistance against differential cryptanalysis compared to other functions of equivalent differential uniformity. Up till now only a small number of locally-APN functions have been studied. In this paper, we show that a Niho type power function is locally-APN if and only if its Walsh spectrum takes four values in \(\{-p^m, 0, p^m, 2p^m\}\). Equivalently, the associated cyclic codes have four nonzero weights: $p^{m-1}(p-1)(p^m + k)$ for $k = 0, 1, -1, -2$. Moreover, we also study properties of Niho type locally-APN power functions, including their differential spectrum, Walsh spectrum, Feistel Boomerang Connectivity Table(FBCT for short) and second-order zero differential spectra.

Non-RS type cyclic MDS codes over finite fields via cyclotomic field reduction

Cyclic maximum distance separable (MDS for short) codes are a special subclass of linear codes and have received a lot of attention, as these codes have very important applications in many areas including quantum codes, designs and finite geometry. However, the existing construction methods for cyclic MDS codes are mainly focused on strict restrictions on certain parameters or are relatively complex in their construction approaches. In this paper, we investigate this approach further via norm reduction in cyclotomic fields. By converting the verification of the MDS property over a finite field into checking non-zero minors in characteristic zero, we propose a construction method of cyclic MDS codes over finite fields via cyclotomic field reduction. Based on this method, we obtain several cyclic MDS codes over finite fields and many non-RS type cyclic MDS codes are produced. Compared with the existing construction methods, our method is relatively simpler. Moreover, the results of this paper show that the parameters of the obtained non-RS cyclic MDS codes are flexible.

Codes and Pseudo-Geometric Designs from the Ternary $m$-Sequences with Welch-type decimation $d=2\cdot 3^{(n-1)/2}+1$

Pseudo-geometric designs are combinatorial designs which share the same parameters as a finite geometry design, but which are not isomorphic to that design. As far as we know, many pseudo-geometric designs have been constructed by the methods of finite geometries and combinatorics. However, none of pseudo-geometric designs with the parameters $S\left (2, q+1,(q^n-1)/(q-1)\right )$ is constructed by the approach of coding theory. In this paper, we use cyclic codes to construct pseudo-geometric designs. We firstly present a family of ternary cyclic codes from the $m$-sequences with Welch-type decimation $d=2\cdot 3^{(n-1)/2}+1$, and obtain some infinite family of 2-designs and a family of Steiner systems $S\left (2, 4, (3^n-1)/2\right )$ using these cyclic codes and their duals. Moreover, the parameters of these cyclic codes and their shortened codes are also determined. Some of those ternary codes are optimal or almost optimal. Finally, we show that one of these obtained Steiner systems is inequivalent to the point-line design of the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,3)$ and thus is a pseudo-geometric design.

Some $3$-designs and shortened codes from binary cyclic codes with three zeros

Linear codes and $t$-designs are interactive with each other. It is well known that some $t$-designs have been constructed by using certain linear codes in recent years. However, only a small number of infinite families of the extended codes of linear codes holding an infinite family of $t$-designs with $t\geq 3$ are reported in the literature. In this paper, we study the extended codes of the augmented codes of a class of binary cyclic codes with three zeros and their dual codes, and show that those codes hold $3$-designs. Furthermore, we obtain some shortened codes from the studied cyclic codes and explicitly determine their parameters. Some of those shortened codes are optimal or almost optimal.

An infinite family of antiprimitive cyclic codes supporting Steiner systems $S(3,8, 7^m+1)$

Coding theory and combinatorial $t$-designs have close connections and interesting interplay. One of the major approaches to the construction of combinatorial t-designs is the employment of error-correcting codes. As we all known, some $t$-designs have been constructed with this approach by using certain linear codes in recent years. However, only a few infinite families of cyclic codes holding an infinite family of $3$-designs are reported in the literature. The objective of this paper is to study an infinite family of cyclic codes and determine their parameters. By the parameters of these codes and their dual, some infinite family of $3$-designs are presented and their parameters are also explicitly determined. In particular, the complements of the supports of the minimum weight codewords in the studied cyclic code form a Steiner system. Furthermore, we show that the infinite family of cyclic codes admit $3$-transitive automorphism groups.

Shortened linear codes from APN and PN functions

Linear codes generated by component functions of perfect nonlinear (PN) and almost perfect nonlinear (APN) functions and the first-order Reed-Muller codes have been an object of intensive study in coding theory. The objective of this paper is to investigate some binary shortened codes of two families of linear codes from APN functions and some $p$-ary shortened codes associated with PN functions. The weight distributions of these shortened codes and the parameters of their duals are determined. The parameters of these binary codes and $p$-ary codes are flexible. Many of the codes presented in this paper are optimal or almost optimal. The results of this paper show that the shortening technique is very promising for constructing good codes.

Combinatorial t-designs from quadratic functions

Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It was recently reported that the image sets of a fixed size of certain special polynomials may constitute a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from special polynomials has been done, and it is in general hard to determine their parameters. In this paper, we investigate this idea further by using quadratic functions over finite fields, thereby obtain infinite families of $2$-designs, and explicitly determine their parameters. The obtained designs cover some earlier $2$-designs as special cases. Furthermore, we confirmed Conjecture $3$ in Ding and Tang (arXiv: 1903.07375, 2019).

It is indeed a fundamental construction of all linear codes

Linear codes are widely employed in communication systems, consumer electronics, and storage devices. All linear codes over finite fields can be generated by a generator matrix. Due to this, the generator matrix approach is called a fundamental construction of linear codes. This is the only known construction method that can produce all linear codes over finite fields. Recently, a defining-set construction of linear codes over finite fields has attracted a lot of attention, and have been employed to produce a huge number of classes of linear codes over finite fields. It was claimed that this approach can also generate all linear codes over finite fields. But so far, no proof of this claim is given in the literature. The objective of this paper is to prove this claim, and confirm that the defining-set approach is indeed a fundamental approach to constructing all linear codes over finite fields. As a byproduct, a trace representation of all linear codes over finite fields is presented.

Another $q$-Polynomial Approach to Cyclic Codes

Recently, a $q$-polynomial approach to the construction and analysis of cyclic codes over $\gf(q)$ was given by Ding and Ling. The objective of this paper is to give another $q$-polynomial approach to all cyclic codes over $\gf(q)$.

Linear codes with a few weights from inhomogeneous quadratic functions

Linear codes with few weights have been an interesting subject of study for many years, as these codes have applications in secrete sharing, authentication codes, association schemes, and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, linear codes with a few weights are constructed from inhomogeneous quadratic functions over the finite field $\gf(p)$, where $p$ is an odd prime. They include some earlier linear codes as special cases. The weight distributions of these linear codes are also determined.

A Class of Linear Codes with a Few Weights

Linear codes have been an interesting subject of study for many years, as linear codes with few weights have applications in secrete sharing, authentication codes, association schemes, and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, a class of linear codes with a few weights over the finite field $\gf(p)$ are presented and their weight distributions are also determined, where $p$ is an odd prime. Some of the linear codes obtained are optimal in the sense that they meet certain bounds on linear codes.

Linear Codes from a Generic Construction

A generic construction of linear codes over finite fields has recently received a lot of attention, and many one-weight, two-weight and three-weight codes with good error correcting capability have been produced with this generic approach. The first objective of this paper is to establish relationships among some classes of linear codes obtained with this approach, so that the parameters of some classes of linear codes can be derived from those of other classes with known parameters. In this way, linear codes with new parameters will be derived. The second is to present a class of three-weight binary codes and consider their applications in secret sharing.

A Construction of Linear Codes over $\f_{2^t}$ from Boolean Functions

In this paper, we present a construction of linear codes over $\f_{2^t}$ from Boolean functions, which is a generalization of Ding's method \cite[Theorem 9]{Ding15}. Based on this construction, we give two classes of linear codes $\tilde{\C}_{f}$ and $\C_f$ (see Theorem \ref{thm-maincode1} and Theorem \ref{thm-maincodenew}) over $\f_{2^t}$ from a Boolean function $f:\f_{q}\rightarrow \f_2$, where $q=2^n$ and $\f_{2^t}$ is some subfield of $\f_{q}$. The complete weight enumerator of $\tilde{\C}_{f}$ can be easily determined from the Walsh spectrum of $f$, while the weight distribution of the code $\C_f$ can also be easily settled. Particularly, the number of nonzero weights of $\tilde{\C}_{f}$ and $\C_f$ is the same as the number of distinct Walsh values of $f$. As applications of this construction, we show several series of linear codes over $\f_{2^t}$ with two or three weights by using bent, semibent, monomial and quadratic Boolean function $f$.

The Complete Weight Enumerator of A Class of Linear Codes

Linear codes can be employed to construct authentication codes, which is an interesting area of cryptography. The parameters of the authentication codes depend on the complete weight enumerator of the underlying linear codes. In order to obtain an authentication code with good parameters, the underlying linear code must have proper parameters. The first objective of this paper is to determine the complete weight enumerators of a class of linear codes with two weights and three weights. The second is to employ these linear codes to construct authentication codes with new parameters.
