Nonlinear Dissipation and Hopf Criticality in Driven Dissipative Collective Spins

Self-sustained oscillations combine finite-amplitude stabilization with a neutral phase degree of freedom. We develop this bifurcation-based framework for driven-dissipative collective spins and show that the microscopic structure of the U(1)-covariant dissipation selects the background attractor, while the explicit U(1)-breaking channel governs its local bifurcation response. In the thermodynamic-limit mean-field dynamics, a single linear U(1)-covariant jump produces only polar fixed-point backgrounds, whereas nonlinear covariant dissipation provides amplitude-dependent saturation and stabilizes a finite-latitude self-sustained-oscillator manifold through a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. Under coherent U(1) breaking, exact resonance leads to a reversible double-zero degeneracy with vanishing critical frequency rather than a standard Hopf onset. Finite detuning unfolds this singularity into a genuine finite-frequency Hopf boundary, which exists only on the self-sustained-oscillator side and can be either supercritical or subcritical. By contrast, a single linear dissipative U(1)-breaking jump cannot generate a standard Hopf instability: when its phase-pinning invariant vanishes the azimuthal direction remains neutral, whereas otherwise the phase-locked fixed points have a purely real Jacobian spectrum. These results establish a general design principle: nonlinear covariant dissipation selects the selfsustained background, while the structure of the symmetry-breaking channel determines whether the resulting local response is double-zero, genuinely Hopf, or non-Hopf.

Spatial and temporal study of the post-compressed high-power laser pulses for coherent extreme ultraviolet source development

We compared the performance of two post-compression techniques, a gas-filled hollow-core fiber (HCF) and a multi-pass cell (MPC), using a high-power ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The HCF produced 27 fs pulses from 230 fs inputs at >50% efficiency, whereas the MPC achieved 34 fs pulses with significantly higher efficiency (>88%). Both results aligned well with numerical simulations. Crucially, spatial wavefront analysis revealed that the HCF acts as a modal filter, improving beam quality, whereas the MPC introduces aberrations through cumulative mirror errors. Furthermore, we characterize the photon flux of high harmonic generation driven by the post-compressed pulses from the HCF and MPC. These finding highlights that post-compression technique based on self-phase modulation is efficient for the intensity boosting of femtosecond laser system, providing opportunities for generating high quality extreme ultraviolet (XUV) sources. In addition, further improvement of spatial wavefront quality is suggested using the HCF as a single compressor or output component of the cascade compressor.

Beam Pointing of Relativistic High-order Harmonics Genrated on a Nonuniform Pre-plasma

The use of tunable pre-pulse is a common technique to enhance the high-order harmonic generation from surface plasma. The shape and dynamic of the electron density, the degree of ionization and its rate, and the plasma heating are influenced by the pre-pulse properties. Non-uniform pre-pulse could cause a spatially varying density map to the pre-plasma region, which serves as the spectrally up-conversion and reflection surface. The corresponding geometrical feature and plasma nature under laser field will affect the harmonic emission properties. In this study, the variation in harmonic beam pointing due to the electron density shape was investigated. Particle-in-cell simulations demonstrated that both plasma hydrodynamics and geometrical optical effect induce the deviation of harmonic beam from specular reflection. This research contributes to the understanding of the surface plasma dynamics during high harmonic generation process.

Highly efficient laser-driven Compton gamma-ray source

The recent advancement of high-intensity lasers has made all-optical Compton scattering become a promising way to produce ultra-short brilliant $γ$-rays in an ultra-compact system. However, so far achieved Compton $γ$-ray sources are severely limited by low conversion efficiency (lower than $10^{-5}$) and spectral intensity ($\sim10^{4}$ ${\rm photons/0.1\%BW}$). Here we present a highly efficient gamma photon emitter obtained by irradiating a high-intensity laser pulse on a miniature plasma device consisting of a plasma lens and a plasma mirror. This concept exploits strong spatiotemporal laser-shaping process and high-charge electron acceleration process in the plasma lens, as well as an efficient nonlinear Compton scattering process enabled by the plasma mirror. Our particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate that in this novel scheme, brilliant $γ$-rays with very high conversion efficiency (higher than $10^{-2}$) and spectral intensity ($\sim10^{9}$ ${\rm photons/0.1\%BW}$) can be achieved by employing currently available petawatt-class lasers with intensity of $10^{21}$ ${\rm W/cm^2}$. Such efficient and intense $γ$-ray sources would find applications in wide-ranging areas.

The multiple effects of gradient coupling on network synchronization

Recent studies have shown that synchronizability of complex networks can be significantly improved by asymmetric couplings, and increase of coupling gradient is always in favor of network synchronization. Here we argue and demonstrate that, for typical complex networks, there usually exists an optimal coupling gradient under which the maximum network synchronizability is achieved. After this optimal value, increase of coupling gradient could deteriorate synchronization. We attribute the suppression of network synchronization at large gradient to the phenomenon of network breaking, and find that, in comparing with sparsely connected homogeneous networks, densely connected heterogeneous networks have the superiority of adopting large gradient. The findings are supported by indirect simulations of eigenvalue analysis and direct simulations of coupled nonidentical oscillator networks.
