Enhancing Carbon Emission Reduction Strategies using OCO and ICOS data

We propose a methodology to enhance local CO2 monitoring by integrating satellite data from the Orbiting Carbon Observatories (OCO-2 and OCO-3) with ground level observations from the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) and weather data from the ECMWF Reanalysis v5 (ERA5). Unlike traditional methods that downsample national data, our approach uses multimodal data fusion for high-resolution CO2 estimations. We employ weighted K-nearest neighbor (KNN) interpolation with machine learning models to predict ground level CO2 from satellite measurements, achieving a Root Mean Squared Error of 3.92 ppm. Our results show the effectiveness of integrating diverse data sources in capturing local emission patterns, highlighting the value of high-resolution atmospheric transport models. The developed model improves the granularity of CO2 monitoring, providing precise insights for targeted carbon mitigation strategies, and represents a novel application of neural networks and KNN in environmental monitoring, adaptable to various regions and temporal scales.

Traveling phase interfaces in viscous forward-backward diffusion equations

The viscous regularization of an ill-posed diffusion equation with bistable nonlinearity predicts a hysteretic behavior of dynamical phase transitions but a complete mathematical \mbox{understanding} of the intricate multiscale evolution is still missing. We shed light on the fine structure of \mbox{propagating} phase boundaries by carefully examining traveling wave solutions in a special case. Assuming a trilinear constitutive relation we characterize all waves that possess a monotone \mbox{profile} and connect the two phases by a single interface of positive width. We further study the two sharp-interface regimes related to either vanishing viscosity or the bilinear limit.

Gradient is All You Need? How Consensus-Based Optimization can be Interpreted as a Stochastic Relaxation of Gradient Descent

In this paper, we provide a novel analytical perspective on the theoretical understanding of gradient-based learning algorithms by interpreting consensus-based optimization (CBO), a recently proposed multi-particle derivative-free optimization method, as a stochastic relaxation of gradient descent. Remarkably, we observe that through communication of the particles, CBO exhibits a stochastic gradient descent (SGD)-like behavior despite solely relying on evaluations of the objective function. The fundamental value of such link between CBO and SGD lies in the fact that CBO is provably globally convergent to global minimizers for ample classes of nonsmooth and nonconvex objective functions. Hence, on the one side, we offer a novel explanation for the success of stochastic relaxations of gradient descent by furnishing useful and precise insights that explain how problem-tailored stochastic perturbations of gradient descent (like the ones induced by CBO) overcome energy barriers and reach deep levels of nonconvex functions. On the other side, and contrary to the conventional wisdom for which derivative-free methods ought to be inefficient or not to possess generalization abilities, our results unveil an intrinsic gradient descent nature of heuristics. Instructive numerical illustrations support the provided theoretical insights.

Travelling waves for discrete stochastic bistable equations

Many physical, chemical and biological systems have an inherent discrete spatial structure that strongly influences their dynamical behaviour. Similar remarks apply to internal or external noise, as well as to nonlocal coupling. In this paper we study the combined effect of nonlocal spatial discretization and stochastic perturbations on travelling waves in the Nagumo equation, which is a prototypical model for bistable reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs). We prove that under suitable parameter conditions, various discrete-stochastic variants of the Nagumo equation have solutions, which stay close on long time scales to the classical monotone Nagumo front with high probability if the noise level and spatial discretization are sufficiently small.

Limit theorems and fluctuations for point vortices of generalized Euler equations

We prove a mean field limit, a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem for a system of point vortices on the 2D torus at equilibrium with positive temperature. The point vortices are formal solutions of a class of equations generalising the Euler equations, and are also known in the literature as generalised inviscid SQG. The mean field limit is a steady solution of the equations, the CLT limit is a stationary distribution of the equations.

Optimizing the fractional power in a model with stochastic PDE constraints

We study an optimization problem with SPDE constraints, which has the peculiarity that the control parameter $s$ is the $s$-th power of the diffusion operator in the state equation. Well-posedness of the state equation and differentiability properties with respect to the fractional parameter $s$ are established. We show that under certain conditions on the noise, optimality conditions for the control problem can be established.

A simulated annealing approach to optimal storing in a multi-level warehouse

We propose a simulated annealing algorithm specifically tailored to optimise total retrieval times in a multi-level warehouse under complex pre-batched picking constraints. Experiments on real data from a picker-to-parts order picking process in the warehouse of a European manufacturer show that optimal storage assignments do not necessarily display features presumed in heuristics, such as clustering of positively correlated items or ordering of items by picking frequency. In an experiment run on more than 4000 batched orders with 1 to 150 items per batch, the storage assignment suggested by the algorithm produces a 21\% reduction in the total retrieval time with respect to a frequency-based storage assignment.

The scaling limit of a particle system with long-range interaction

We describe the macroscopic behaviour of a particle system with long-range interactions. We describe conditions on the interaction strength in dependency of the distance of the particles, such that the scaling limit of the particle system is a well-posed stochastic PDE.
