Two-photon-exchange effects in the electro-excitation of the $Δ$ resonance

We evaluate the two-photon exchange contribution to the $e N \to e Δ(1232) \to e πN$ process at large momentum transfer with the aim of a precision study of the ratios of electric quadrupole (E2) and Coulomb quadrupole (C2) to the magnetic dipole (M1) $γ^* N Δ$ transitions. We relate the two-photon exchange amplitude to the $N \to Δ$ generalized parton distributions and obtain a quantitative estimate of the two-photon effects. The two-photon exchange corrections to the C2/M1 ratio depend strongly on whether this quantity is obtained from an interference cross section or from the Rosenbluth-type cross sections, in similarity with the elastic, $e N \to e N$, process.

Two-Photon-Exchange Correction to Parity-Violating Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering

Higher-order QED effects play an important role in precision measurements of nucleon elastic form factors in electron scattering. Here we introduce a two-photon exchange QED correction to the parity-violating polarization asymmetry of elastic electron-proton scattering. We calculate this correction in the parton model using the formalism of generalized parton distributions, and demonstrate that it can reach several per cent in certain kinematics, becoming comparable in size with existing experimental measurements of strange-quark effects in the proton neutral weak current.

The two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-nucleon scattering at large momentum transfer

We estimate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering at large momentum transfer by using a quark-parton representation of virtual Compton scattering. We thus can relate the two-photon exchange amplitude to the generalized parton distributions which also enter in other wide angle scattering processes. We find that the interference of one- and two-photon exchange contribution is able to substantially resolve the difference between electric form factor measurements from Rosenbluth and polarization transfer experiments. Two-photon exchange has additional consequences which could be experimentally observed, including nonzero polarization effects and a positron-proton/electron-proton scattering asymmetry. The predicted Rosenbluth plot is no longer precisely linear; it acquires a measurable curvature, particularly at large laboratory angle.

Field Theory in Noncommutative Minkowski Superspace

There is much discussion of scenarios where the space-time coordinates x^μare noncommutative. The discussion has been extended to include nontrivial anticommutation relations among spinor coordinates in superspace. A number of authors have studied field theoretical consequences of the deformation of N=1 superspace arising from nonanticommutativity of coordinates θ, while leaving \bar{theta}'s anticommuting. This is possible in Euclidean superspace only. In this note we present a way to extend the discussion by making both θand \bar{theta} coordinates non-anticommuting in Minkowski superspace. We present a consistent algebra for the supercoordinates, find a star-product, and give the Wess-Zumino Lagrangian L_{WZ} within our model. It has two extra terms due to non(anti)commutativity. The Lagrangian in Minkowski superspace is always manifestly Hermitian and for L_{WZ} it preserves Lorentz invariance.

A Field Theoretical Model in Noncommutative Minkowski Superspace

In this talk we present a field theoretical model constructed in Minkowski N=1 superspace with a deformed supercoordinate algebra. Our study is motivated in part by recent results from super-string theory, which show that in a particular scenario in Euclidean superspace the spinor coordinates θdo not anticommute. Field theoretical consequences of this deformation were studied in a number of articles. We present a way to extend the discussion to Minkowski space, by assuming non-vanishing anticommutators for both θ, and \barθ. We give a consistent supercoordinate algebra, and a star product that is real and preserves the (anti)chirality of a product of (anti)chiral superfields. We also give the Wess-Zumino Lagrangian that gains Lorentz-invariant corrections due to non(anti)commutativity within our model. The Lagrangian in Minkowski superspace is also always manifestly Hermitian.

A Naturally Narrow Positive Parity Theta^+

We present a consistent color-flavor-spin-orbital wave function for a positive parity Theta^+ that naturally explains the observed narrowness of the state. The wave function is totally symmetric in its flavor-spin part and totally antisymmetric in its color-orbital part. If flavor-spin interactions dominate, this wave function renders the positive parity Theta^+ lighter than its negative parity counterpart. We consider decays of the Theta^+ and compute the overlap of this state with the kinematically allowed final states. Our results are numerically small. We note that dynamical correlations between quarks are not necessary to obtain narrow pentaquark widths.

Positive Parity Pentaquarks Pragmatically Predicted

We consider the possibility that the lightest pentaquark is a parity even state, with one unit of orbital angular momentum. Working within the framework of a constituent quark model, we show that dominant spin-flavor interactions render certain parity-even states lighter than any pentaquark with all quarks in the spatial ground state. For such states, we focus on predicting the mass and decays of other members of the same SU(3) flavor multiplet. Specifically, we consider the strangeness -2 cascade pentaquarks, which are relatively immune to mixing. We take into account flavor SU(3) breaking effects originating from the strange quark mass as well as from the structure of the spin-flavor exchange interactions themselves. We predict the lightest cascade pentaquarks at approximately 1906 MeV, with a full width about 3 times larger than that of the Theta^+.

Phenomenology of the Pentaquark Antidecuplet

We consider the mass splittings and strong decays of members of the lowest-lying pentaquark multiplet, which we take to be a parity-odd antidecuplet. We derive useful decompositions of the quark model wave functions that allow for easy computation of color-flavor-spin matrix elements. We compute mass splittings within the antidecuplet including spin-color and spin-isospin interactions between constituents and point out the importance of hidden strangeness in rendering the nucleon-like states heavier than the S=1 state. Using recent experimental data on a possible S=1 pentaquark state, we make decay predictions for other members of the antidecuplet.

Angular Conditions,Relations between Breit and Light-Front Frames, and Subleading Power Corrections

We analyze the current matrix elements in the general collinear (Breit) frames and find the relation between the ordinary (or canonical) helicity amplitudes and the light-front helicity amplitudes. Using the conservation of angular momentum, we derive a general angular condition which should be satisfied by the light-front helicity amplitudes for any spin system. In addition, we obtain the light-front parity and time-reversal relations for the light-front helicity amplitudes. Applying these relations to the spin-1 form factor analysis, we note that the general angular condition relating the five helicity amplitudes is reduced to the usual angular condition relating the four helicity amplitudes due to the light-front time-reversal condition. We make some comments on the consequences of the angular condition for the analysis of the high-$Q^2$ deuteron electromagnetic form factors, and we further apply the general angular condition to the electromagnetic transition between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 systems and find a relation useful for the analysis of the N-$Δ$ transition form factors. We also discuss the scaling law and the subleading power corrections in the Breit and light-front frames.

Interplay of Hard and Soft Processes at JLab Energies

Even at moderate energy machines, there is a regime where hard pion electroproduction proceeds by a perturbatively calculable process. The process, we claim, is not the leading twist fragmentation one but rather a higher twist process that produces kinematically isolated pions. Semiexclusive data may teach us more about parton distribution functions of the target and the pion distribution amplitude. In addition, there is a connection to generalized parton distribution calculations of exclusive processes in that the perturbative kernel is the same.

Excited Baryon Production and Decays

We consider decays of the lowest-lying positive parity 56-plet and negative parity bf 70-plet excited baryons. For the 70-plet, we include both single-quark and two-quark decay operators, and find, somewhat mysteriously, that the two-quark operators are not phenomenologically important. Studies of decays 70-plet to Delta(1232) + photon may strengthen or vitiate this observation. For the 56-plet decays, now using only the single-quark operator, we can predict many strong decays after fitting parameters on the assumption that the Roper is a 3q state. Comparison of these predictions to experiment can verify the structure of the 56-plet. As a sidelight, we show a large N_c derivation of the old Gursey-Radicati mass formula.

Supersymmetric Noncommutative QED and Lorentz Violation

We consider Lorentz-violating operators induced at the loop level in softly-broken supersymmetric noncommutative QED. Dangerous operators forbidden in the supersymmetric limit are generated via finite corrections, with the scale of supersymmetry breaking serving as a gauge-invariant regulator. We compare the most dangerous loop effects to those obtained in noncommutative theories truncated by a momentum-space cutoff, and find significantly improved bounds.

Noncommutative Gauge Theory without Lorentz Violation

The most popular noncommutative field theories are characterized by a matrix parameter theta^(mu,nu) that violates Lorentz invariance. We consider the simplest algebra in which the theta-parameter is promoted to an operator and Lorentz invariance is preserved. This algebra arises through the contraction of a larger one for which explicit representations are already known. We formulate a star product and construct the gauge-invariant Lagrangian for Lorentz-conserving noncommutative QED. Three-photon vertices are absent in the theory, while a four-photon coupling exists and leads to a distinctive phenomenology.

Discerning Noncommutative Extra Dimensions

Experimental limits on the violation of four-dimensional Lorentz invariance imply that noncommutativity among ordinary spacetime dimensions must be small. Noncommutativity among extra, compactified spatial dimensions, however, is far less constrained and may have discernable collider signatures. Here we study the experimental consequences of noncommutative QED in six dimensions, with noncommutativity restricted to a TeV-scale bulk. Assuming the orbifold T^2/Z_2, we construct the effective four-dimensional theory and study interactions unique to the noncommutative case. New vertices involving the Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the photon yield order 100% corrections to the pair production and to the decays of some of the lighter modes. We show that these effects are difficult to resolve at the LHC, but are likely within the reach of a future Very Large Hadron Collider (VLHC).

Bounding Noncommutative QCD

Jurco, Moller, Schraml, Schupp, and Wess have shown how to construct noncommutative SU(N) gauge theories from a consistency relation. Within this framework, we present the Feynman rules for noncommutative QCD and compute explicitly the most dangerous Lorentz-violating operator generated through radiative corrections. We find that interesting effects appear at the one-loop level, in contrast to conventional noncommutative U(N) gauge theories, leading to a stringent bound. Our results are consistent with others appearing recently in the literature that suggest collider limits are not competitive with low-energy tests of Lorentz violation for bounding the scale of spacetime noncommutativity.

Baryon Form Factors in QCD

This is a summary of perturbative QCD calculations of baryon form factors. For e^+ e^- going to baryon-antibaryon pairs, normalized calculations are available and reported for the entire ground state octet and decuplet, including off-diagonal form factors, and for the S_{11}(1535)-antiS_{11}. (The latter results are new for this report.) We also include some explanation of how the results come to be.

Low-scale Quantum Gravity and Double Nucleon Decay

In models with a low quantum gravity scale, one might expect sizable effects from nonrenormalizable interactions that violate the global symmetries of the standard model. While some mechanism must be invoked in such theories to suppress higher-dimension operators that contribute to proton decay, operators that change baryon number by two units are less dangerous and may be present at phenomenologically interesting levels. Here we focus on Delta B=2 operators that also change strangeness. We demonstrate how to compute explicitly a typical nucleon-nucleon decay amplitude, assuming a nonvanishing six-quark cluster probability and MIT bag model wave functions. We then use our results to estimate the rate for other possible modes. We find that such baryon-number-violating decays may be experimentally accessible if the operators in question are present and the Planck scale is less than ~ 400 TeV.
